Ink cartridge missing or damaged message

I've been having the black ink not printing problem and after trying the clean print heads command thru the printer and the computer controls with no success, I finally resorted to removing the cradle and flushing the screens with alcohol and warm water until it ran clear. I cleaned all the terminals and reinstalled the cartridges. Now I get an error message that "one or more cartridges are missing or damaged". I've tried removing and reinstalling. I saw a warning about not leaving them out more than 30 minutes. Could've been that long while I was cleaning print heads. What now?

Hello @Posmmom,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I see you are running into some print quality issues on your HP Photosmart 6510, you are unable to print in black ink.
I see you have completed the troubleshooting steps listed here: Printer Does Not Print Black Ink or Color Ink, or Prints Blank Pages, with no success.
As for the printhead, you do not want to dry it out, that's why they recommend not to leave the cartridges out for long periods of time. Please note: There are three printhead cleaning stages.
I suspect the issue may be the printer and not the cartridge. Please let me know which Country/Region you are in as well as the product Warranty status: HP Warranty Checker
I hope to hear from you soon.
Thanks,
HevnLgh

  • Ink cartridge missing or damaged?

I have an HP PhotoSmart c309n-s with a screen that's showing "Ink Cartridge Problem" and goes on to say that my yellow ink cartridge is missing or damaged. I tried reinstalling the yellow cartridge, removing and reinstalling all the cartridges, and replacing the yellow cartridge outright. At various points I also got complaints that the blue cartridge was bad too, and for a time I got a message that all five cartridges were "missing or damaged." I've tried unplugging the printer as well. If it helps, we had a power failure yesterday for about 15 hours ... but I'm unsure whether that matters.
For now, it's still complaining that the yellow cartridge is missing or damaged. The print head moves every 15 seconds or so, but nothing prints. Help!

  • L7600: Ink Cartridge missing or damaged,

Does anyone know how to make this thing work?

  • Officejet pro 8600 plus. Error message: cartridge missing or damaged

Just installed a new printer head to the tune of $120.00. It came with set-up cartridges that you are required to use. Installed new  printer head and cartridges. Now I get the error message of cartridges missing or damaged. I have taken out the cartridges and printer head about 5 times and still get the message. Do I dare try using my old cartridges (which were actually brand new - more $ wasted)?? how can I run a business without a printer, scanner, and fax?!?

I'm having the same issue.  We also had this issue with the original 8600 we purchased (that one only used the demo cartridges before giving the lovely "cartridge missing" error).  The first one was still under warranty, so we had to send it back to HP and get a replacement.  In the meantime, the office was without a printer.  Now, the second 8600 has managed to last through about 8 cartridges (approximately six months) before the same issue arose.   It's even with the same cartridge:  magenta.
I've changed cartridges, removed the print head and cleaned it, cleaned the contacts on cartridge, the print head and even where the print head connects to the printer, and even removed the little white plastic guide wedges and switched them around to try and troubleshoot the situation.   I've rebooted it repeatedly and briefly contemplated banging it vigorously on the sides to beat it into submission.
Alas, it is still showing the error.
I wish I could say I'm a novice when it comes to troubleshooting, but I regularly work on printers and other components.  It is truly frustrating to have a product which does not perform well and which does not easily allow the user to rectify the situation without resorting to a sledgehammer or wine.

Third HP printer w/sensor problems. Is HP going down hill? It seems the HP webpage has been hacked. I was rerouted 3 times to an offshore third party tech. support co. in India who want to charge me $$$ to resolve my printer problems after claiming they were HP then MS. Wow!!! 6mo. old 8600 and can't reach anyone directly at HP. Does anyone have any ideas or do you know what I'm talking about...please help? I've shut off, turned on, unplugged, removed and reinstalled software on laptop and nothing works.

  • 88XL missing or damaged message

I have had my L7580 printer since Nov 2007. I had a paper jam and after I cleared the jam, I got a message that the black cartridge was either missing or damaged. I power cycled the printer twice and removed the ink cartridge but this did not clear the error message. I replaced the cartridge and the printer works fine. This is second time I've had a problem and in both cases the cartridge was not even close to empty. I searched the forum and haven't seen any other people reporting this problem. I have two more than half full 88XL cartridges. Any ideas?
    Jim

After several attempts, HP replaced the printheads (not the ink cartridge). I haven't run into the problem since then but who knows if it will appear again.

  • Cartridge missing or damaged - Officjet 6500 Wireless

I have had my 6500 Wireless for only a few months, but have had the same problem more than once. After replacing an ink cartridge with a new one, following the instructions to the letter, I get a scrolling message that says: The following Ink Cartridges appear to be missing or damaged: black [K] (or other colors). At times I have gotten it to work by taking them out and putting them in many times. Last time, with the black cartridge, I was in the middle of a call with HP support whe I leaned over the printer to read the serial number off the back, and somehow when I put my weight on the printer, it suddenly worked. This time, no matter what I do, I cannot get the printer to recognize the brand-new black cartridge, or a second new one that I tried. Of course I have gone meticulously through the HP troubleshooting procedure. Nothing.
Has anyone else dealt with this? Is it possible that the printer is bad?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

I have had this printer for about 6 months.
Both times I have replaced with Genuine HP ink cartridges this has happend.
Both times the fix has been this:  on the top of the cartridge, where you pull off the plastic, is an air channel that runs across the top of the cartridge.  The first time the plastic did not pull off cleanly and there were bits plugging the channel.
The second time, the plastic pulled off the straight channel, but where it runs into a bunch of S-shaped curves it looked blocked.
I poked a tiny hole with a pin in the first S-curve through the plastic and the cartridge worked.
The channel must be open or the ink cannot drain into the printer- it creates a vacuum.
This is a manufacturing defect and HP should look into fixing it.
For others finding this forum, get a small, sharp pin and open that channel and try it again.. just be careful not to collapse the plastic in the air channel and plug it up worse..

  • Error message 'One or more cartridges appear to be missing or damaged'.

Hi, can someone help suggest what i do next? I'm getting the above error message on the main black ink cartridge. I've tried 3 different cartridges so I'm pretty sure it's not the actual catridge that's a problem as they can't all be faulty. There's no problem with the other 4 cartridges.

    Hello MTBB,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I would like to see if there is anything more to suggest regarding the cartridge error on the printer. What is the model of the printer you are having the issue with?
Since you have done - in my opinion - the best troubleshooting step by replacing the cartridges already, it may be a printhead issue. Take a look through this HP document: 'Incompatible Print Cartridge', 'Print Cartridge Problem', or 'Cartridge Missing or Damaged' Message..., it may have a step or two more worth trying.
    Thanks, for posting.

  • Message: Print Cartridge missing or not Detected

The subject is the warning message I get.  are cartridges out of ink or maybe dried ink on cartridge or contacts

Hi @DK240 , and welcome to the HP Forums!
I can see you're having cartridge issues. I'd like to help!
To start, remove the ink cartridges from the printer, and perform a power reset.  Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the power outlet, then wait 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, plug the printer back in. Ensure you plug the printer directly to a wall outlet. Make sure to bypass any sort of surge protector or power bar.
Second, I'd recommend running through the steps in the following document:

  • Cartrideg missing or damaged

My Printer (HP Deskjet 3070A) says 'ink cartridge missing or damaged' after new cyan cartridge installed - this has happend in past but with some turning on / off and cleaning has resolved itself - not this time - I've tried a couple of cartridges so it's not the cartridge, plus turning on/off - is there anyway I can reset the printer (it won't let me press the back, X or tool button)?- to get printed what I need I've tried printing in black only but won't even let me do that - Help please !

    Hi Jane,
Which of the four colours is havng the problem? When you place the cartridge into the printer does it 'snap' in securely?
Do you know if your printer is still in warranty, you can use the tool here to find out. If it is I would suggest contacting support in your Country, http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.html.
If your printer is out of warranty there are a few things that you can check.
The gold contact pads on the cartridge, are they in good condition, dirty etc....
The contacts in the printer, do they look damaged or misaligned when compared to the contacts for the other three cartridges? Are they dirty? This can cause communication errors.
Please let me know if any of this helps. If not I will try to help you resolve your issue another way.
    Thanks,
    Francheska

  • New Cartridges seen as missing or damaged

I recnetly bought an HP 3-pack of 564 black cartridges.  Each cartridge usually lasts me 3 months or so.  The first two lasted about 2 weeks each, then I got the "Cartridge appears to be missing or damaged" message.  They certainly weren't missing, and they feel as heavy as their full companions.  I just inserted #3 and it's woking ok...so far.  Is the problem likely to be with the printer or these cartridges?  Someone please give me a hint.

Thanks for your model number NiloDerf!
My best suggestion is to follow the guide I have found for you below. The steps should help rid the error message. If the message still appears, I would then suggest calling HP to see what your options are with them.

  • Cartridges appear to be missing or damaged

I have a new 6830 printer. After printing two photos I am now getting a "one or more cartridges appear to be missing or damaged" message. I have replaced them, cleaned them, reset the printer and nothing works. This is infuriating as I just bought the printer to replace another HP printer that died.

    Hi ayaggy,

  • HP Deskjet 1510 Tri-color Ink Cartridge Error

I just bought a HP Deskjet 1510 back in August and I loaded the HP original ink cartridges that come with the purchase. For the first 5 print jobs it was working well, but somehow after a while my laptop and the printer itself just kept warning that there's low ink level in the cartridges (especially the tri-color one). I haven't even got to use the tri-color cartridge much as I've been printing in grayscale ever since I've used this printer.
I've tried taking the cartridge out and putting it back in again; sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I thought it might be a contact issue so I cleaned those parts too but it didn't change anything.
It's getting extremely frustrating as I'll have to do this for god knows how many times for every single page I print or copy. This happens to the black cartridge too but 90% of the time it's the tri-color cartridge.
    Please help.
    Thanks.
