Ink Cartridges drying out

I bought this HP7510 - it prints really well and the wireless feature is brill - BUT the printer isnt used for a a few days the cartridges dry out and it wont print any more. I then have to buy new cartridges. Ive spent many times the cost of the printer on cartridges already. Is there anything that can be done?

Hey @johndfleming,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that after a few days of not using your HP Photosmart 7510 e-All-in-One Printer, your ink cartridges appear to dry up. I would like to assist you today with resolving this issue. These printers have an energy saving mode built into them where they will go into a 'sleep mode' to save power when you're not using them. I would recommend not turning your machine off which would then allow the printer to go into a 'sleep mode'. Being in 'sleep mode' will allow your printer to wake up and perform maintenance so the cartridges will not dry up. With that being said, it is unusual that after a few days, even with power off on your machine, that the cartridges would appear to dry up. Usually cartridges will dry up after being stored for weeks inside of a printer that is not being used, or if cartridges are being stored outside of the printer. Therefore, rather than the cartridge drying up, your machine may actually have a printhead issue. The printhead is the part that the cartridges fit into. It controls 'reading' the cartridges and putting ink on the page. If the printhead is defective, than your cartridges and print quality will be affected.
If this issue happens again, instead of replacing the cartridges, I would recommend running a clean of the printhead. To perform a clean please follow the steps below.
Load plain white U.S. letter or A4 size paper in the input tray, if it is not already loaded.
On the printer control panel, touch the Setup icon (), and then touch Tools.
Touch Clean Cartridges. The printer clean the printhead and prints a Print Quality Diagnostic page.
Review the print quality on the test page.
If a the Print Quality Report prints perfectly after performing the clean, than you should have no issues continuing to print with those cartridges.
For proper cartridge storing and handling instructions, please review the following information:
Keep ink cartridges sealed in the original package until they are installed. Store at temperatures between -15 and 35 degrees Celsius (5 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit).
To keep cartridges from drying out, if you need to turn off your machine, always turn the printer off using the Power button, and wait until the Power light goes out before you pull the plug or turn off a power strip. This allows the printer to move the cartridges to a capped position.
If you remove a cartridge from the printer for any reason, try to replace it again as soon as possible. Outside of the printer, if unprotected, cartridges begin to dry out. If the printer uses separate ink cartridges and printhead, the printhead can be damaged if cartridges are not installed.
Storing Opened Cartridges and Printheads
Please respond to this post with the result of running a clean of the printhead. I look forward to hearing from you!

  • How long do Ink cartridges last?

I have a Photosmart premium 309 g-m printer that is trying to tell me that my ink cartriges are near empty even though they have had very little use. I bought genuine HP cartridges, fitted them, all worked well at first but now several months later - empty! What is going on here, no way have I USED that ink. The same happened with the set that came with the printer. I even put a 364XL black in and that has now failed completely. Does not using the printer much at all over several months result in the ink evaporating, drying out leaking out or what?
When I put the 364XL black in I left the old standard 364 black out altogether but the printer gave error messages so I fitted the old one back in thinking it would use the new XL version - is there any way of checking this? Gratefull for any help here.

Sorry Ciara, missed the bit about the error messages - basically if I remove the standard 364 black cartridge (which is the original one that came with the printer and is probably empty now) I get a message telling me it is either broken or missing and nothing prints until I replace it. After I'd replaced the original cartridges with new ones (except the standard black which I thought I would not need using the 364 XL instead) everything was fine to start with, I just assumed the printer was using the XL black and just wanted the standard (empty) black for comfort!?
I'm a bit confused now as to what to buy - 4 standard cartridges alone or with a XL black as well. I don't see the point of the XL if I have to use a standard black anyway to get the printer to work at all, especially as they are all going to run out after 6 months whether I use them or not.
Thanks again for your help so far, Brian.

  • CLI-251XL Ink Longevity (drying up)?

Hi, all!  I'm new to this forum (as you can see).
Background for my question: I'm very new to inkjet printers - all of my printers have been, and are, lasers except for one.  That one is a dedicated disk printer that uses a Lexmark engine and ink cartridges.  Lexmark left the inkjet business 2 years ago and for that reason and some others I just purchased an MG7120, which will mostly be used for printing disks.
I print intermittently - a week or 2 can go by with no disks printed then I'll need to print a bunch.  The Lexmark cartridge nozzles dry up over a week or two and then I have to pull the cartridge and wipe the nozzles with rubbing alcohol on a tissue before printing.  This is not the end of the world but it's annoying and also wastes ink.  So my question is: can the 7120 sit for a week or more without printing, and not have the nozzles dry up?
    TIA!

    Hi tkurkowski,
We recommend following these steps to prevent the ink from drying out and the print head from clogging:
    1.  Never disconnect the power plug until the power is turned off.  If you touch the ON button to turn off the power, the machine caps the print head (nozzles) automatically to prevent from drying. If you disconnect the power plug from the wall outlet before the POWER lamp is turned off, the print head will not be capped properly and this will cause drying or clogging.  When disconnecting the power plug, make sure that the POWER lamp is not lit.
    2.  Print periodically.  Even if the print head it is capped, it may become dried or clogged if the machine has not been used for a long time.  We recommend you to use the machine at least once a month to prevent the print head from clogging and the inks from drying out.
    Hope this helps!

  • HP Envy Cartridge runs out too fast!

Dear HP, I have had my HP Envy for 18 months and am growing frustrated of the ink cartridges running out of ink too quickly.  I purchased a brand new 61 black ink cartridge just last week and only printed 2 Word documents, 5 school forms (1 page each) and about 25 pages of coupons, and today the black ink ran out....after just one week and about 32 pages!  It's not worth $20 for j ust 32 pages...that's almost $1.00 per page!  I have an old HP Deskjet that only cost me $29.99 and the $15 cartridges last at least 3 times longer.  I'm tired of wasting my money on ink and feel very cheated. Regards, Laura Hamann

    Hi @Villaverde
I would like to help you with your concerns about your ink usage. The regular size colored cartridge have a page yield expectancy of 165 page, and the XL one have a 330 page yield.
Actual yield will vary depending upon the amount of content on the page.Highly "dense" documents, such as the text document below, may yield fewer pages than the ISO standard, while less dense ones such as the organization chart below would yield more pages than the standard.Printing that uses primarily one color could cause lower yields for that color, and higher yields for colors not heavily used. The yield you experience will depend upon the content that you print.
    The five standard ISO pages
    High density text
    Org Chart
The information above and more can be found here: How HP measures inkjet page yields.
If you are still concerned that you are not getting an adiquite page yield from your cartridges, I suggest calling HP. If you are in Canada or US call 800 474 6836, or you can Contact HP Worldwide.

I have the same printer. Do you go to preview and then then you hit accept, and then after you hit accept it says scanner failure? If I set scanner settings to send the scan directly to the photo view center, then it scans with no problems, but I don't have the oppurtunity to crop it ahead of time. How about your situation witht he scanner?  What I believe is happening is that when the data is sent to the scanner, that either the usb sends it too fast and the data in the scanner becomes corrupted, and the only way to clear it is to shut off and turn on the printer. I am wondering if I use a network card in the scanner. There is a slot for this in the back.  Will the data be sent too fast? Could the USB be to fast for it, what if you try to use a usb on an older computer?

  • New Ink Cartridge but can not print out/copy any document.

I have HP Printer Deskjet 1050. I've just bought 1 x Original HP Ink Cartridge Colour Black No.61 that can be used as well for my HP Deskjet 1050 (because I could't get No.802 Black Cartridge). I have pulled out the empty one and pushed the new one in until I heard snap sound (I've followed as what is in the instruction poster). Before my old Ink was empty, I was able to print either black or colour. Now, after I've got new one pushed in, I couldn't print nothing, even the alignment page doesn't automatically print out after all cartridges are pushed in and cartridge door was closed. My Black Ink warning light is blinking all the time. I can scan to my computer/laptop but can not print it out or make copy from the printer. • HP Officejet Pro L7580 - Yellow Ink Cartridge keeps popping out although it's brand new.

    Hello,
I have had this officejet printer for about 4 years. I have never had a serious problem until now. A few days ago I replaced the yellow ink cartridge (88XL) because the ink indicator showed it as being completely empty. After replacing the cartridge with a brand new cartridge from OfficeMax, the cartridge pops out while I'm trying to print or copy something and the displays says that the yellow cartridge's ink level is not enough and needs to be replaced.
It seems at first glance that this is a mechanical problem concerning the yellow ink slot; however, I'm not sure. Or I suppose the problem could be related to the cartridge itself. To get around this problem, I've held down the cartridge and stuck a small pencil in the opening where the small latch of the "ink cartridge compartment cover" normally goes in. That way I've been able to print, but it's really a hassle. And honestly I don't think this is the real solution to the problem.
If anyone knows how to resolve this issue, I'd like to hear from you. Please let me know as soon as possible. Worst comes to worst I will have to go out and buy another printer.

Try this for a Quick Fix ...........
After reading other forum comments from people having the same problem with the yellow cartridge popping-out, combined with others who have realised that HP have no interest in compensating anyone for this rediculous example of, at best, 'bad design', or at worst 'blatent planned obsolescence', I have created a 'quick fix' that may add another 1, 2 or more years of life to the HP Officejet Pro L7580 Printer.
This is not the elegant technical solution I was hoping for.  However, in hindsight, it may prove to be a more reliable solution than replacing the faulty part that is actually causing the problem.  So, here it is the Quick Fix ........
I found a wooden triangular door stop that I cut to size that fitted exactly in the space between the plastic door and the offending yellow cartridge. To hold it in place, I wrapped the doorstop with 2" cellotape, then I stuck the door stop to the inside of the plastic door with double sided cellotape (double sided stick-on foam would also work well). With the doorstop in the correct place, the plastic door closed perfectly and was snug enough to apply sufficent pressure to the offending yellow cartridge, and hence stopping it from popping out again.  To make sure the plastic door does not 'fly open' with the pressure of the yellow cartridge (when it wants to pop out!), I applied another piece of 2" cellotape around the outside of the door, holding it to the body of the photocopier.
This exercise only took 10-15 mins to do.  I feel this is a much better option than spending another $300+ on a new All-in-One  system, as well as being a good environmental solution.  If this is DELIBERATE 'planned obsolescence', companies like HP need to be more accountable for, at best, 'sloppy design'.  Any feedback would be appreciated.

  • How do I tak out the ink cartridge on HP Officejet Pro 8600?

Need to remove my ink cartridge to buy a set backup.  How do you remove the old cartridge?

The HP Office Pro 8600 series consists of 3 model variations. I have the Plus version. All functions similiar.
With the power 'ON', grip the side of the front panel (left handed) just below the HP logo. The entire panel will swing down. The ink cartridge bay will move from the right to the left. Push on the cartridge, and it will pop-out.
Manual, see pg 13 and 92.    WARNING per HP:    Never turn off the printer when ink cartridges are missing.

  • Why are my new ink cartridges with my new printer running out so soon?

The answer is simple, this information is directly from HP tech support themselves.
( The ink cartridges that come with new printers are complimentary and are not full and the ink status monitor that is used in the HP software is not accurate.)
Also the more you use the cleaning utility to clean the printheads use most of your ink.
This means that when you get a newprinter you have to buy new cartridges on the spot while you are purchasing the printer because you will running out very soon.

What printer model? Where are you located?  The statements you make about starter cartridges are not true for any HP Inkjet sold in the US afaik.
It is true that running cleaning cycles will use ink.  Running excessive cleaning cycles is not a good idea, besides using ink it can shorten the life of the printer.  It is unusual for cleaning cycles to be needed at all during the life of a typical genuine HP cartridge.

  • Ink not coming out from new cartridge

I purchased the color and black cartridge from HP store. After installation the black ink is not coming out. Tried and checked all software settings and it seems the cartridge have some problem. Contacted customer service but no help. Can any one help?
It is a 3515 deskjet all in one printer and printer head is not detachable.

Hi jkoley, and welcome to the HP Forums!
I see you are running into black ink issues.  I would like to help.
I would recommend removing the ink cartridges, and performing a power reset.  Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the power outlet, then wait 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, plug the printer back in. Ensure you plug the printer directly to a wall outlet. Make sure to bypass any sort of surge protector or power bar.
I would also recommend utilizing the steps in this document on Fixing Ink Streaks, Faded Prints, and Other Common Print Quality Problems.

  • Printing black &white when color cartridges are out of ink

When color ink cartridges low but black new and full, why can't I print in black and white? All my cartridges were low or out of ink. I had a new black cartridge so replaced the empty one with it, thinking I could then print things in black and white, just not color. It's printing practically blank pages with some faint color on them, not even a smidge of black anywhere.

I have the EXACT same issue, just have a different printer Photosmart C4580...I'd like to know the answer as to why with new black and white cartridge it keeps defauting back to color, even if I select under preference to print B&W...really frustrating.....!!!

  • Replaced ink cartridges and no ink shown on new print outs

I have a HP 8500 a9110 printer. I just replaced all three color ink cartridges (black cartridge is still good). After replacing, I tried to print and all that comes out are white print outs with no color or very slight tone. I attempted to go Tools and clean and align heads. The clean worked but received failure on align option. I turned off and unplugged unit and also removed and put back in new ink cartridges. I also removed the both heads and cleaned off with soft cloth. Has anyone experienced this issue before. Any assistance is appreciated.

    Hi vegasbuddha,
Sorry to hear that you're having problems.
Are you using HP genuine cartridges? I'm asking because using any other cartridges could result in many hardware
problems and issues also in ruining the printer.
If that's not the problem, can you take a look at this link and see if you've missed any steps in replacing the cartridge?
    Replace Print Cartridge
After replacing any cartridge, the printer should automatically print out a diagnostics page.
Also, cleaing the cartridges could help in this case. The instructions to do so are in this link:

  • Color Ink Cartridges all running out very quickly

    Hi,
I have an HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium. I purchased it because the store display bragged at how much more econimical it was to run compared to a laser printer. I mainly print in black, but I occasionally print some color pages here and there. When my black cartridges started getting low, I received a message on the screen saying it will need to be replaced soon. At the time, all of my color cartridges were between 50 and 75% full. When the black cartridge did run out, I replaced it and within a few minutes, the first color cartridge said it was empty and I could not continue printing until it was replaced, even though I was trying to print only in black anyway.
I could not understand why it would have ran out when it was still well over half full a few minutes before and I was only printing with black ink. I went ahead and replaced it anyway. A few minutes later, the same thing happened again with the next color and then after that with the last color. I had to replace all 3 color ink cartridges in order to even be able to print just black text.
This was a couple of months ago. Today I ran a printer status report and saw my page count. I have printed only 1325 black pages and 312 color pages. That means I went thru close to $100 worth of color ink for only 312 pages?! The number I actually got out of those cartridges is actually even less because I have printed quite a few since then to come up to that number. How is a printer like this anyway economical like their display said? That's over 33 cents per page and I'm not talking about printing out hi quality photos or anything like that....these were just a few flyers with a few small pics and some colored text.
I don't understand how if I prnt mainly in black at draft quality, how I can run out of colored ink so fast. I have loved the way the whole machine worked, but if it goes thru ink that fast, I'd be better off having anything I need printed in color done by a professional printing service....it would be cheaper than what I've been paying per page with this!
I really wish HP would step up to the plate and either take this printer back or figure out a way to make it use less ink. By the time I get a years worth of use out of it, I'll have spent well more in ink than I have on the printer itself.
Has anyone else experienced problems like this, or is there something wrong with my printer?

    Hi tom19382,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I see that your HP Officejet 8600 premium is running out of ink quickly.
I have some questions for you:
1.) What Operating System are you using Windows or Mac? What version? That way I could provide the settings for black ink only.
2.) Are you using regular or XL size cartridges?
3.) Are these cartridges HP Genuine or re-fills?
Hope to hear back, and have a great day.

  • Ink cartridge problem lock out

Hi.New user. New printer.  Printer has colour and black catridges. I have run out of ink before and changed both black and colour cartridges. My wife ignored low black ink alert and now the printer screen shows :- Ink Cartridge problem. The following cartridges must be replaced. The rest of the screen is blank except for a little black bow-tie. No other bars or colours, no buttons no icons. I have changed the black ink cartridge (twice) to no avail. I have downloaded new software (update release 30th july). I have cleaned contacts etc. No fix so far. HP printer and scan doctor just tells me to fit a new cartridge. I can print with the black cartridge removed. ( Single cartridge mode) .Next move is to reset to factory defaults but I haven't found out how to do that.  HELP !   PLEASE!

    Hey there @lynnriley0785!
I would be happy to provide some help regarding the ink cartridge problem error on your Photosmart 7520!  The first thing I suggest is to plug the printer into the wall outlet directly if it is currently in a power surge protector or extension cord. This may sound silly but this will ensure the printer is getting full power and may eliminate any unnecessary troubleshooting. If the printer is no longer getting full power from the power surge or extension cord it may give false errors, have poor connection, paper feed issues, quality issues and jam issues.
If the carriage is still stuck in the printer with the cartridge problem error then I suggest removing the power cable and trying to manually move the carriage with your hand.  If the carriage moves then remove all the cartridges, close the printer and plug it back in.  Once the printer comes back on see if you can install the cartridges again.
If you cannot get the carriage to move remove the power  and check for any jammed paper in the printer.  I have provided a document with instructions on all the places to check for a possible piece of jammed paper.
