Ink Cartridges Empty -Print Black Only message

Need some advice:  I continue to get the following message:  "To print in color, install the following cartridge- Cyan...To print in Black only...press OK
The steps taken so far...replaced with new cartridge (twice), ran all of the commands in the toolbox (this results in printing sample pages that show all of the colors, etc.), cleaned the printing heads, and turned off the printer multiple times.  I even copied a colored page and it works fine, all of the colors show.  It just when I print from the PC that this message continues to come up.  Any suggestions?

I have the same problem. HP Solutions Sw shows all ink cartridges as "Ready" but when printing anything, I get the low Magenta ink "Black Only" message box. All Cartidges are 100% HP ink. The printing sw is getting bad ink status from somewhere.

  • Officejet 7110 won't print black only with empty color cartridges

There is a similar thread on this for the Officejet 6700, but I wanted to put it out there for the Officejet 7110 too.
When one of the color cartridges is getting LOW on ink, you start getting error messages for black and white printing. A prompt asks you if you want to print in just black ink, even though you have set all the settings in the dialog to black ink only. Strange, but at least you can keep printing in black ink only. Until...
When one of the color cartridges becomes EMPTY, you get totally cut off from printing in black ink only! You will be allowed to print NOTHING until you put in a new color cartridge!
I don't actually need to print color on this printer. I use it for half size check plots of engineerings drawings. Why on Earth would I need color cartridges to print black ink only checkplots? This is a total scam by HP to milk every last penny from the consumer.

I signed up for this forum just so I could respond to this thread.
After looking for an HP email address for support (that was also a joke), turns out its not simply a printer setting you can disable.
We also purchased this OfficeJet 7110 printer for strict use of black at the office.
Years and years of everyone saying, "Don't buy HP products, stop buying HP products, HP products are inferior." - to rephrase nicely.
Thought I would give it a shot, right out of the box the alignment was screwed up and took about 8 hours to fix and reprint the testing sheet (further sapping the colour cartridges). Now I can't even print in black. This nonsense about mixing colour to create a more true black, that's the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Let me print in gray if the ink quality you supply is so terrible.
Will not buy another HP product again, and I will joint he hoard of many who will spread the good word.
To put it bluntly; HP - get your **shhit-frawking-bleep** together.

Black Ink Cartridge empty, Color Ink cartridge full. Is it ok to replace only the black cartridge on HP 4635??

The cartridges can be replaced independently as they run out of ink, you do not need to replace black and color at the same time.

  • Color cartridges used when printing black only

    Hi HP
We have had  a 6600 printer for about 13 months.
The color cartridges are used up when only printing black only
Recently we replaced all three colors cartridges - week before thanksgiving - 2014 and the cayan and yellow
cartridges are totally empty - the black cartridge is full and the printer does not let us print.
we did not print in color at all.
    what can be done?
    Please advise
    Thanks

    Hello SteveKowaliw,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you have some concerns about the colour ink cartridge usage.
I am going to give you a document that will assist when you Cannot Print When One of the HP Ink Cartridges is Empty.
I am also going to point out one section of the document so you have a better understanding on how the printer works.
"The printers listed in this document cannot print when an ink cartridge is empty even though the other ink cartridges have ink.
Your printer is designed to print only when all ink cartridges have ink. A little ink from all the ink cartridges is used in periodic servicing tasks. This helps to prevent issues such as printhead clogs and poor print quality. There is no way to bypass this feature".
    Thank you for your time.

  • HP 6500A Plus will not print black only if any color cartridges are low. It used to. Why not now?

HP 6500A Plus will not print black only if any color cartridges are low. It used to. Why not now? It will print in color if the black is low but not if any color is low. This is very annoying. Printer is using HP cartridges too.

Get used to this with HP printers - its a new feature they have introduced to keep running costs lows - works well. Had two HP printers same happened with both of these. Suggest a different brand - they might not have this special feature

  • Incorrect Ink Cartridge Empty error

I receive an Ink Cartridges Empty message for the yellow cartridge, when I try to print.  I am given the option to either cancel and replace the cartridge or print in black only.  I have replaced the cartridge twice, but still get the message.  Does anyone know what I might do to fix this?  Thanks.

    Hello kirkpat
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I understand you are getting a faulty out of ink message on your printer. Now you did not specify which printer you have so I am going to give you some general instructions to try. First ensure that your printer is plugged directly into the wall and not into a power bar or surge protector. If you are curious as to why I ask this you can review at your leisure the HP Support document: Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector. Now I would also like you to power cycle the printer, this means you turn it off, unplug it from both the wall and the back of the printer and wait a full minute before replugging it back in. If you are still getting the issue turn off the printer and unplug it again, after which I would like you to remove the ink and the printhead (if the printer has a printhead) and start the printer up without them installed. If you still get the error there is a printer issue. If you do not get the error then it is most likely an issue with the cartridges. Either way you can put them back in and call HP Technical support for additional help with this.

  • Ink Cartridges Empty Warning

When attempting to print with my c7250, I began to receive a message that stated:
     Ink Cartridges empty.
To print in color, install the following cartridges: Cyan
To Print with black ink only, click black only. To begin printing on certain products, press the resume button on the printer control panel. The printer will replace colors with greyscale.
To cancel, press the cancel button on the printer.
If empty cartridges are not replaced soon, all printing will stop.
    64 bit windows 7 OS.
    OK, what I've done:
It showed to still have some cyan ink left when I started to get this message but I figured it might be off so I installed a new cyan HP cartridge. Same result only it shows full. I tried yet another cyan cartridge and again, the same result.
I have removed and installed the latest drivers and patches.
If I perform a calibration, the results are normal and the same with a print head clean. All colors show up.
It appears that others are having the same concerns on this forum but it doesn't look like anybody has an answer do they?
    Thanks...

No answers here, but same problem. Same OS on one compter and Vista on the other. Check the print alignment all inks printed, then it won't print at all.
Come on HP, how about a solution

  • 6110 Will not print black only

    OBJECTIVE
Print black only; color to print grayscale.
    PROBLEM
Prints color images even when print black only is selected.
Same for all programs: use mostly Office and IE.

                 Last configured 8-6-07, default
    COMMAND SEQUENCE
    Alt F P
      Preferences
      Color
        Print grayscale
        Black cartridege only
    Have also tried:
      Preferences
      Advanced
        Doc options
          Advanced Printing options: disabled

    Hi,
I would have thought that by selecting printing with the black cartridge only, via the driver, that only black would be used in printing.
I am not 100% sure that this printer supports it but it may be possible to print with only the black cartridge installed. On printers where this is possible the unit works in single cartridge mode.
So to give it a try open the printer to access the cartridges and remove the colour cartridge.  Now close the printer again.  If the printer supports single cartridge operation you should get a message on your PC screen saying something like - Printing in reserve mode - Only the black cartridge is available for printing.
As I say, this may or may not be possible with your printer but if it works then it will definitely not be printing with colour because you have removed it.
The only other issue now is what to do with the colour cartridge when you remove it from the printer.  If it is just left out exposed to the air the ink in the nozzles will dry out and the nozzles will become blocked which will result in poor print quality when the colour cartridge is re-installed into the printer.  When the cartridges are in the printer and not printing they are held in a capping station that maintains the cartridges in good condition.  There is a little plastic item called a print cartridge protector which you should have if you have ever purchased a No. 58 cartridge for photo printing.  Normally the No. 56 print cartridge is stored in the print cartridge protector when the No. 58 cartridge is being used in the printer along with the No. 57 cartridge for printing photos.  If you have a print cartridge protector from previous No. 58 cartridge use then you could store the No. 57 cartridge in it while using the printer in black only mode.
    I hope that this helps

  • Hp officejet 6700 premium-printing black only

I have a small business and would like to turn-off ANY color printing. How can I turn-off all color printing. I've set my HP printing software to "black ink only" but somehow the printer alerted my software that I cannot print until I replace my magenta color cartridge. My operating system is Windows 8.1.

Hi @Pathroa , and welcome to the HP Forums!
I see you're looking into color options.  I would like to help.
You can adjust the settings to print black only.  I am linking a document below:
Changing Print Settings in Windows 8
However, the printer does require some ink in each cartridge to print.  Having no ink in a cartridge can cause damage to a printhead.  Also, with black ink only it will still use small amounts of ink during its regular cleaning and maintenance. I am including a document below with more information:
    Ink Usage in Inkjet Printers

  • OfficeJet Pro 8620 Can't print black only on other media types

Why won't the OfficeJet Pro 8625 driver allow me to print using black only on non-plain media types?
I purchased an OfficeJet Pro 8625 for general home printing and to print shipping labels for my business.  I purchased a second tray so I can keep both plain paper and shipping labels in the printer all the time.
To select the labels, I had to pick a media type for the labels tray.  I can't choose labels, so I chose Cardstock.  But when I select Cardstock as the type in the driver when printing, it will not allow me to select black ink only.  I want to print black only because the shipping labels come out a little bit fuzzy, with color fringes when printed in color.
I'm not worried about ink usage.  I'm an Instant Ink subscriber.  I need the labels to be crisp, and printed full color they aren't crisp.
What's the deal here?  Why can't I select black only?

Hello @clough42 and welcome to the HP Forums!
I'm sorry to hear that you've had issues printing in black ink only on anything other than plain paper, but I will certainly see what I can do to help out
I'd recommend that you download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor. If it fails on anything please return and let me know what happened and where it failed and we will go from there.
If it passes everything and it appears there are no issues found, I'd recommend that you call our technical team for further options

Attempted one new Yellow Cartridge (not a refilled used one).  Pulled all cartridges, cleaned, opened/closed the printer, lifted/lowered the gray print-head lever.  Unable to figure out how to print in only Black ink, if possible.  The cost of a new printer is about the same as Tech Support help (out of warranty).  Any thoughts on how to resolve (other than buying a new printer - unless it is time)?  Thank you in advance.
