Ink consumption while idle !

I worry about the ink consumption of my C5380 while the printer is idle.
I use that hp printer seldomly to print a few professional pages (not images, but documents with almost no color).
And, again this morning, I get a "low ink" warning on the Black Photosmart ink cartridge.
I changed the whole set 2 months ago, and printed about 10-12 pages of text only.
The Properties settings is set to "Lighter" (far most left).
Question: Does the ink evaporates? Or get absorbed somewhere while the printer is idle?

The page here discusses the various ways ink is used.

  • Ink use while idle/ HP8620/Leave ON or OFF?

    Hello:  I've  just purchased an HP Officejet Pro 8620 for Home use.  I only print or copy a few pages per week: perhaps 5 to 10 pages per week, usually plain paper, frequently in draft mode, sometimes color/draft, ocasionally full color.Consequently, the printer sits idle much of the time.  I understand that some ink is used in auto maintenance cycles to keep the print heads from drying and clogging.  I also understand that most inkjet printers use very little electricity when idle, so I don't mind leaving it turned on - if that is what is best for ink economy. My question: with the above described usage,  will this printer use less ink if I leave it off until needed? or would it be more ink saving to leave it on all the time? I eagerly await your reply.  Also, would like to let you know that I am quite pleased with the print quality when I use the photo/best mode.  I don't use this often, but I like to have the option for special occasions.  Thanks!

    Hi , I see by your post that you would like to know whether to leave the printer on or off. I would like to help you.
    If the printer is not in use, then I would recommend turning it off, to save on power and ink. When the printer is left on, the printer will periodically run maintenance cycles that use small amounts of ink to flush the nozzles and keep them clear, if the printer isn't being used for long periods of times. Without the regular maintenance cycles the printhead may become clogged. (months at a time being turned off) HP inkjet printers have shut-down routines, where the printer parks the printhead and caps the cartridge. When the printer is turned off and when the printer has been idle for a while and it puts itself into power save mode. The printer can sit for an extended time without drying out the ink in the printhead and without harming the printer. Hope this helps. If you appreciate my efforts, please click the 'Thumbs up' button below. Thank You.

  • Brand new imac 27" keeps crashing randomly in mavericks while idling, using firefox, transferring files, etc.  Reformatted and reinstalled everything from scratch after 15 plus crashes a day.  Crashes now only 4 times a day.  Help!

    Brand new imac 27" keeps crashing.  I'm running 10.9.2 with all software up to date.  It will crash on file tranfers to/from/between external drives, web browsing, word processing, video editing, and even while idling.  It used to crash every 15 minutes when I first got it but I reformatted and reinstalled all software.  Now it it still crashing albeit less often.  This is extremely frustrating because I have no idea what I can do to prevent it from happening!
    Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hmm thanks for the input.  Alright. I uninstalled Avast.  Was good for an hour or so.  I was doing some file browsing and crashed again.  Got this message.

    My iphone is draining like crazy. i gets completely empty within 06 hours while idling... i am baffled.. please help

    There's an app on the phone that is stuck sending data, or trying to send and failing, and in an infinite loop. Mail can do this if you have an Exchange account or iCloud account. Sometimes a corrupt calendar entry or contact can cause this.
    But first, if you have either type of account go into Settings and turn it off, then reboot the phone (hold HOME and SLEEP until an Apple logo appears). If the problem goes away you have identified the culprit. If you turn the account back on and the problem does not come back no further action is required.
    If this doesn't fix it you have to find the app. Any app that exchanges a lot of data (Facebook, Whatsapp, etc) is a possibility.

  • 2013 MacPro is quite hot while idle

    I have noticed previously that my 2013 MacPro is significantly warmer than others while idle. Just placing my hand on top reveals it to be quite warm, while the store models and my friend's machine (which is identical to my own) are quite cool (barely noticeable heat).
    Checking iStat menus, my "PCIe Switch Diode" is currently sitting above 80°C, and has been for the recent history. See attached graphs.
    Is this... normal? My machine is essentially doing nothing (<2% CPU usage, <2fps from the D700s).
    The rest of the sensors currently read:

    I do not know what those numbers should look like, but I am surprised by seeing things called "12V High…" at under 12 Volts. It has been a tradition to run the 12 Volts at higher than 12V, then regulate it down for actual use.
    Are you getting "noises" out of the power supply? An annoying humming sound? Some Users had noises that drove them crazy and their Macs worked much better after Apple replaced the supply (under warranty).

  • 6000 RPM fans while idle, normal?

    Hello friends,
    A few days ago my MBP started spinning up the fans like I was doing something really intensive.  Only I wasn't.  I installed smcfancontrol and it reported both fans at close to 6000rpm (5899 is the highest I've seen it) and a cpu temp of 75 c - 85 c while idle.  iStat Pro reported the same. No apps running after a reboot and the fans instantly spin up and the cpu temp hovers around the 80 mark.  I'm of the understanding that 50 - 70 is considered normal with the fans in the 2000-3000 rpm range. Yes?
    Heres a screen cap with only Activity Monitor running. You can see the most intensive process is 3.5% and the temp and fan speed can be seen in the upper right.
    Never had any issues before, just out of the blue.  I did swap out the HDD a few months ago, but the problem JUST started.
    I've reset the SMC per these instructions: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewlocale=en_US  but didn't change anything.
    Thanks as always for any insight.

    The simplest (but not quickest) route would be a reinstall of the OS.
    Although, if the problem doesn't appear in safe mode, you could check the differences between safe mode and a normal bootup:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
    The most important things are:
    - disables all login and startup items (you could test that by adding another account)
    - loads only required kernel extensions
    That last one is somewhat trickier. On the commandline, you can check what 3rd party kernel extensions are installed, check out this article:
    http://osxdaily.com/2010/08/03/list-all-third-party-kernel-extensions/
    For instance, when I type the command mentioned in the article, I get the following output (edited for brevity):
    $ kextstat | grep -v com.apple
    Index Refs ... Size       Wired      Name (Version)
      114    0 ... 0xc000     0xc000     com.parallels.kext.prl_netbridge
      115    0 ... 0x4000     0x4000     com.parallels.kext.prl_vnic
      118    0 ... 0x7000     0x7000     com.parallels.kext.prl_usb_connect
      119    0 ... 0x4e000    0x4e000    com.parallels.kext.prl_hypervisor
      120    0 ... 0x4000     0x4000     com.parallels.kext.prl_hid_hook
      122    0 ... 0x1a000    0x1a000    org.pqrs.driver.KeyRemap4MacBook
      123    0 ... 0x4000     0x4000     org.pqrs.driver.PCKeyboardHack
    $
    So obviously, I have Parallels installed, as well as KeyRemap4MacBook and PCKeyboardHack. Removing the software for these 3rd party kernel extensions could perhaps solve your problem.

  • Bluetooth remote freezing with PowerPoint on MacBook Pro while idling

    I am experiencing problems with bluetooth remote controls (3 different brands) freezing up when used with MS PowerPoint on a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard (all updated). It is intermittent in nature and appears to be related to idling when giving presentations. It can freeze as quickly as within one minute to not freezing until 30-40 minutes later. This may not be a remote control issue as the arrow keys on the keyboard will not advance or backup the PowerPoint slides as well. However, when using my iMac computer without the remote, I have not observed the freezing (although, I may not have waited long enough since the nature is intermittent and variable in time).
    When frozen, the mouse centered on the slide with a touchpad click awakes the computer to work properly (quick, but not ideal solution). However, when two screens are utilized (LCD projector or another monitor) via VGA connecion in "Presenter View," the touchpad click does NOT awake the computer, regardless of where the arrow is placed on screen. During this situation, the "presented slide" can be advanced by clicking the forward and backward arrows below this "subwindow" of "Presenter View," and even clicking on the image itself will advance it forward (but not backward). When this happens, the keyboard arrows do not work in advancing or backing up the slide sequence.
    When in this frozen mode with a LCD or 2nd monitor, the only way I have found to get it working again, is to "Exit Show" and pulling down the "Slide Show" tab and selecting "Play from Current Slide." This takes me back to the slide where the computer froze and allows the bluetooth remote to start working again (obviously not an optimal solution, as the software should not disengage). Again, it appears if I keep changing to another slide within a few seconds to a few minutes, the PowerPoint does not freeze up. However, it is intermittent and variable as to the length of time before it freezes up.
    NOTE: I have run these same PowerPoints, with the same remote controls, without any problem for hundreds of hours over the past 3 years. I have updated MS Office 2011, from 2008, last fall and have also run these same items without problems for about 40 hours. I have run Mac "Disk Utility" and just installed a MS Office "Update" released yesterday, which has not corrected the issue as well. Is this issue a MicroSoft problem?
    Bless whoever who has an answer to this complex situation. Thank you!

    I am having the same problem with a minister's MacBook Pro at my church.  It started about 2-3 weeks ago.  We at first thought it was a remote issue and found out that it is not.  He is running a vitually new MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion 10.8.2 OS.  He has Microsoft Office 2011.  He has only had the computer since December.  He runs powerpoint presentations all the time.  He never had a problem until about 2 1/2 weeks ago.  When he runs powerpoint in Presenter Veiw it would freeze up on him.  You can still move the cursor over to the arrows on the presenter view slide windo and phisically click the mouse on the arrows to move forward or backward but none of keys on the keyboard work at all.  It won't even let you escape.  You have to move the cursor over the "Exit Show" button and click there.  We thought that it might be just a presenter veiw issue so we tried running it in "Mirror Mode" and that seemed to work for a while but now we are having the same freezing problems.
    We have taken the laptop to the Genius Bar and talked to the guys there and they did not tell us anything that helped us.  They found this thread that you all started with our same problem.  It looks like all of us had it happen at the same time.  I find that very interesting.  My minister said that he had not run any updates so we don't think that was the issue.
    I have tried uninstalling Office completely and reinstalling it with all the updates and that did not help.  I was thinking that I have a copy of Office 2008 here in the office and I was going to uninstall 2011 and install 2008 but one of you said you were having the same issue with 2008.  Maybe I can uninstall 2011 and reinstall it without doing any updates and see if that does anything.  We are very baffled and can't seem to get an answer about any of this from Mac or Microsoft.  All we get is one blaming the other.
    Let us know if this is helpfull or if you have any luck.

  • IMac Air High CPU Usage while Idle / Kernel Issues

    Hello,
    I am attempting to repair an MacBook Air that a customer spilled a small amount of orange juice into. I have completely taken the unit apart and thoroughly cleaned the motherboard and all components. There doesn't appear to be any physical damage done from the liquid. The problem is that the customer claims that since the spill happened the computer runs "very slow" and the CPU usage is very high even while completely idle (Bounces between 60%-80%). Being versed primarily in Windows PC Repair I am looking to post some diagnostic logs on here and maybe get some help from someone who knows what they are looking at. The customer took the machine to the Apple Store and they told them it had a "kernel problem" and would need a new Logic Board. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I just need to know what diagnostic reports I need to post to get this ball rolling... Thank you for your time.

  • T61p power down while idle in docking station

    Hi,
    I have a weird problem with my T61p. I work for hours when the laptop is docked, then I leave it alone for a few minutes and when I come back it is powered down. There is no indication that it shuts down Windows XP cleanly, since unsaved work disappears. It appears as if it shuts down as if I would hold the power button.I have the same problem with my docking stations at home and at work.
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks, cj

    Thanks  KiDYu, unfortunately it didn't help....
    Getting back to this 4 month old problem (actually, 1 year old problem...). I have been trying many different things (driver updates, monitoring temp, using TPFanControl to monitor/control fan).... nothing helps. When I work with my laptop docked everything is great, when I go get a coffee I come back and it's powerd off.
    My typical temp (right now, after using it, Pandora running in the background) while docked is  CPU 81 celsius, gpu 78, pwr 69. Seems to be within reasonable limits. Also it doesn't seem like the temp should go up when I'm NOT using the laptop, so I doubt this is a overheating problem.
    My best guess is that something in the power management software detects "idle" after some minutes and tries to do something thereby causing a power-down.
    I have found another thread in a different forum where somebody has the same problem with a X61:
    http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=69643
    Any help would be greatly appreciated, this is really annoying.

  • Pro9000 Mark 11 Excessive Ink Consumption Question

    Hi,
    I am new to the board. I purchased my Pro9000 Mark 11 for home hbby use in October 2012 and printed about 8 - 8X10's, then left the machine idle until June 2013.
    Upon starting the machine up - found most of the tanks to be empty, installed a new set.
    In July and August printed about 6 - 8X10's. The tanks were 80% full.
    Since then I have used only the grayscale to print about 10 pages of black office documents, just simple text on plain paper.
    Now the color tanks are almsot all empty.
    Each time I start the machine it seems to cycle for about 3 minutes before printing the black text document.
    I am wondering why my color tanks went from 80% to 10% (or zero) during the time I did no photo printing.
    Possibly do i have an auto clean setting wrong?
    I have anew set of color cartridges to instal, but would like to get some advice before I install.
    Thanks in advance,
    Dave
    p.s. is there a 'general rule of thumb' on how many color 8X10 can be printed on a new set of tanks?

    First, the printer uses all the cartridges to print black.  It does NOT use simply the black cartridge.  So, if you printed nothing but B&W you would still run out of color ink.
    Second, printing every 8 months is not going to be the best useage of the printer to get the max cost savings on ink.  I suspect you are losing most of it to cleaning the print nozzles.
    There is no way to guess what the avaerage user will get in ink cost.  What is an average print or an average user?  Mosy of my prints may have a blue sky in them and mos tof your may have a coal mine in them.  So, how much does it coat each of us?  I will use more blue and you will not.
    However, Red River paper company has come up with a pretty good estimate of ink per print cost.  It is here, if you care to look.

  • Power consumption of idle iPhone charger?

    I've been reading horror stories about how these little chargers, just plugged in and not charging, are "power vampires" and think it is nothing but hyperbole.
    Who knows the correct power consumption of this little charger (Model A1265) that came with the iPhone 4? Not charging, not even plugged into a charged iPhone, but just plugged into the mains and idling? It does get a bit warm, so there must be some power consumption. But how much is it really?
    Thank you.

    Further on that, I just found an older thread with the same question, where Tamara claimed her Watt meter (KillAWattz?) indicated zero. That is odd, as the little charger does get warm when left in without it charging, and if it gets warm, there is energy being consumed. Might be very, very little, but who knows how little?

  • Would like to invoke my App while idle.

    Hey guys,
    I need my application get invoked while my linux box is idle, as in invoking screen saver ?.
    What is the logic to figure out the system idle.  Any clue much appreciated!!!.
    Thanks.

    You can make use of X11's screensaver extension to get a system's idle time:
    (taken from the code for sinac)
    #include <X11/extensions/scrnsaver.h>
    static XScreenSaverInfo* xss_info = NULL;
    int
    seconds_idle(Display *d)
    if (! xss_info )
    xss_info = XScreenSaverAllocInfo();
    XScreenSaverQueryInfo(d, DefaultRootWindow(d), xss_info);
    return xss_info->idle / 1000;
    Of course, that only gives you the duration of the idle time. To do something after a specified timeout of x seconds, you could make use of a loop that checks the time spent idle, then sleeps for (x - seconds_idle(d)) seconds. On the next iteration of the loop, if the system has been idle long enough, whatever action you want to do can be triggered.
    I don't know what you're coding this in, though.

  • CPU usage suspiciously high while idle

    I have the following problem, help is very appreciated
    Right after my computer finishes booting the CPU usage raises up to approx. 55% on both cores, I'll attach a screenshot to clarify.
    What can be the cause of this?
    To me, Xorg seems to be using more CPU than it needs.. still it's not 55%. The performance isn't bad either, the system works very well.

    well well... looks like compiz WAS the problem after all... must've messed up while testing. So i 'found' a 'decent' workaround.
    Deactivated compiz (set metacity as the WM) and removed compiz-icon from the startup applications, then i enabled metacity compositing (because i use both screenlets and docky)... and that's it, .. for now

  • My 8th core is almost maxed out while idle

    Hello folks,
    I'm glad Logic is now 64bit; no more "out of memory" errors. Yippee! However, now the eighth core of my "octo-core" Mac Pro, is almost maxed out when idle. This also seems to be the core that is taxed the most during playback. After looking at the Activity Monitor, it looks like the 32-bit Bridge might be the culprit. Does anyone know if the 32-bit Bridge is supposed to spread the load evenly across the cores (multi threading)? Is there something that I can "tweak" to fix this? Is anyone else having the same issue? Thanks!

    Depending on the year of the MBP, the hard drive may not be considered a user replaceable item...but you can check the available 1 TB drives at good sources such as OWC, http://www.macsales.com they are great to deal with and have on-line videos showing how to do most installation tasks.
