Ink level no longer displays

My C4280 (I have Vista) has stopped automatically showing ink levels when printing (the cartridges are HP , not refilled or remanufactured). Can anyone tell me how this can be restored?
Meanwhile I’ve tried “Method One (using HP Solution Centre)” but at the window’s top right it says “Ink levels not currently available”, and in Toolbox it says: “The computer is unable to establish two-way communication with the device.”
With “Method Two” am not quite sure what is meant by “the software program”, but in Windows just General, Security and Details. Going straight to Print doesn’t offer any Properties.Photo Gallery, for example, clicking File doesn’t offer a Print option in the dropdown, and on clicking Properties there is no Services tab.

Sometimes in thr rush to download the software you forget the other (sibling) programs.
The Utility patch  fixes:
known problems with the following features and functionality: HP Print Status
Toolbox
Ink Levels
Solution Center
HP Scan (All-in-One)
Front panel scan button (All-in-One)

  • Canon Pixma MP280 AIO printer - ink levels cannot be displayed - how to resolve this problem?

    Good morning everyone,
I have a Canon Pixma MP280 AIO printer (about 18 months old) now which I previously had installed on a old Windows 7 Pro x64, SP1 Dell Optiplex 755 computer.  That computer finally bit the dust.
My present computer is a Dell Optiplex 745, Win 7 SP1 x64 Home Premium  machine.
Description of problem:  After installing the printer on this computer (using the CD/DVD that originally came with it and following all the instructions), I find the printer will no longer display the ink levels.  Every time I click on "Printer Status", the pop-up box just states the info cannot be displayed.  (All other  functions of the printer work just fine).
Resolutions attempted thus far w/out success:
    1.  Uninstalled printer and deleted all files associated with it (2 times).  Re-started computer, then re-installed it.
    2.  Emailed Canon Support.  their response did not resolve the issue.  (Don't recall just what they said as I've long since deleted that email reply).
    3.  Searched the Forums here for an identical problem with the same model printer, but didn't see anything.
My question:  Is there a resolution for this problem?
Thank you for your time and any help.
    Pete C.

Yes, thanks for  your follow-up .. .Mine did not work after the day-long shut off.
I am gonna risk buying a new black ink cartridge since my machine seems to just be running the error on the black alone.
Good luck with your new one.
I will probably upgrade too, if this does not work.  I cannot complain about this machine. I had two, one for office and one for home. Both took A LOT of use. And, i used no-name refill cartridges and no-name refill ink for over half the time on the home machine.
This one, the home one lasted about 6 years, the other about 4+1/2 . I think that is pretty **bleep** (lol it censored the correct spelling of 'dam') good mileage for a fairly inexpensive machine, that got very high ratings, and gave me all those features.
    Good Luck.

  • How to check ink level in printer cartridge

i just finished installing my C4180 all-in-one printer on my new HP dv6 notebook running windows 7
i cleaned and aligned the ink cartridges, but my black is still printing poorly
i want to check the ink level in the cartridge before i buy a new cartridge, but the windows 7 solution center is somewhat different from xp
the solution center tells me that the ink levels are not currently available and when i click on the printer toolbox, i get nothing
the icon at the bottom of the solution center gives me a big green checkmark, but does not give me any useful information
how can i get better info about my ink levels?
    thanks
    frank hershenson

    Hello frankjh,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
Checking the ink levels on the HP Photosmart C4180 can be done a couple ways, from the front panel of the printer or the software installed on the computer.
It is usually not the easiest to see but the ink levels should be displayed in the lower left corner of the C4180 display screen. A small icon looking like a yield sign may be present, if so this is stating it is low.
Since you have tried to use the HP solution Center on the computer in attempt to gather the information and where not able due to an error, you may need to uninstall and install the C4180 on the computer.
Here is the guide to uninstall: Uninstalling the Printer Software. When ready to install download the software from here: HP Photosmart C3100/C4100 All-in-One Printer series Full Feature Software and Driver.
I hope this helps, please reply if you need anymore help

  • HP Deskjet D4260 Ink Levels

I have a reasonably happy HP D4260 and a PDF manual for same, Windows XP Pro SP3.
The manul references a way to check the ink level.  I know I can tell when the ink light comes on, the ink level is low.  Somehow, not being able to do something the manual says I should be able to do bugs me.
I can't find the installation CD and downloaded what I think would be the correct software from HP.  Installed, reboot, uninstall, reboot, reinstall, etc.
THe printer works fine - I just use the D4260 to print documents and now use another printer for pictures.
To display the ink levels (should the display of ink levels be turned off for some reason)  the manual says:
    1. For Windows 2000, click Start, and then click Settings. For Windows XP, click
Start, and then click Printers and Faxes.
A list that includes the printers installed on your computer is displayed.
    2. Highlight the printer name, and then right-click to display a list of options.
    3. Click Properties.
The Printer Properties dialog box is displayed.
    4. Click the Device Settings tab.
    5. For Display Ink Status Window, click On, and then click OK.
Everything is fine until step 5.
Danged if I can see a Display Ink Status Window.  However, the manual also says some features may not be available in my operating environment.
The About tab says HP Deskjet D4200 series (61.71.246.0), last configured by user (me) about a year and a half ago.
I think my operating environment is fine.  Perhaps it is my eyesite?
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

Now, I can answer my own question.
Go to Start, Run and enter:
    "C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtbx01.exe"  "HP Deskjet D4200 Series"
This will bring up the Deskjet 4200/4260 Toolbox.

  • Hp 8600 software no longer shows ink level.

Recently  the 8600 software on windows 7 showed the ink levels of the printer.  This function is no longer availalbe.  Also, there is no tab tht shows this.  Can it be retrieved.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

If your printer is connected by wired or wireless LAN you can enter the IP address of the printer (found from the front panel by touching the wireless icoon or by printing a network configuration page) in your browser.  This will bring up the printer's embedded web server, which provides various information including ink levels.  You can also get the ink levels from the front panel by touching the ink droplets icon on the front panel.

  • Officejet 8600 Plus e N911g - Workaround for Toolbox Ink Level display

This is with a hard wired Ethernet hookup. I bypassed the router so as to eliminate any problem passing signal thru. It worked with and without the router.
Until HP comes up with a fix for the two way communication problem that everybody is having, I stumbled on a way to workaround this.
    1. Turn printer OFF
2.Start HP Officejet 8600 program from desktop icon or from HP folder in Programs.
3.Select "Estimated Ink Levels" from Shopping Resources.
    4. Toolbox (Network) should appear. (The computer is unable to establish two-way communication with the device.)
    5.Turn printer ON
    6. Select "Estimated Ink Level " tab. Ink levels should appear. If not, then select "Refresh" once or more times.
All other tabs should  also be available. This will only work one time. You will have to turn printer OFF again and start procedure over.
This worked on Windows 7 x64 and Windows XP 32bit both on the same network with a Linksys DIR-655 router.

    Hello,
If you are referring to the printer display in your below description "Then abt 6-weeks ago the display option for Scanning and Display Ink Levels just disappeared,", then i guess you may have to do the follwoing....
1> While the printer is ON, unplug all the cords from back of the printer.
2> Wait for full 60 seconds.
3> plug in the power cord directly into a wall outlet ( bypass the surge / power strip ) and then into the printer.
4> If the printer is not powering on, press the ON button once to do so.
5> If the display issue still exists, then try tilting the display.
6> If issue still persists, then call HP Tech Support for further assistance.
If you are in US , the toll free # is 1-800-474-6836 .
If you are not in US , then log on to www.hp.com , at bottom-left corner there is a world map icon, click on it and then select the region you belong to, which would then provide support options for you for that region.

  • Empty Ink Level Displayed After Installing New HP Cartridge on HP D7260

    Hi there,
I have an HP Photosmart D7260 printer.  I have alway used genuine HP ink cartridges.  I recently replaced the Cyan cartridge after it ran out of ink however the printer is still showing the cartridge as empty.  I printed the Self test Diagnostic Page and the ink level is shown at 0%.  The ink expiry date is shown as "04/01/2016" indicating that the cartridge is new.
I've tried reseting the printer and reinstalling the cartridge several times.  How can I get the printer to show the correct level for the new full cartridge?  I don't want to buy a new cartridge since this a brand new genuine HP cartridge.  I'm quite sure there is a way to reset the incorrect ink level so please advise.
    Serial Number:  [edited]
    Firmware Version:  RExxFN0721BR
    Please help!
    John

I have the exact same problem with a Photosmart 3210 printer.  My brand new light magenta cartridge is not showing up as full and I can't print even black & white!  This is ridiculous.  I hope someone at HP replies to your posting with a solution soon!

  • My officejet 7000 stopped showing ink level remaining

do i need to re-install my officejet 7000 as it no longer shows ink levels remaining.

Hi, this could be due to the lost of bi directional communication between your device and the printer. Follow the link below to try to re establish this connection.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500 A909g new ink levels drop to less than half after few pages.

Installed all new HP940 ink cartridges and the levels dropped to half after only printing less 12 ink defective pages. Quality Diagnostics Page shows colors but black ink does not show up at all.  Self Test Diagnostic page shows printhead status is good. Checked the ink tubes and they are still neatly bundled and no signs of leakage.

    Hello TV60,
I see that the Officjet 8500 a909g is not displaying the correct ink levels and will not print black. You have done a great job trying to resolve the issue already, some steps I will suggest you have already done but it wont hurt to go over them again.
This HP link: Ink Usage in Inkjet Printers may help explain why the inks are not showing as full as you think they should be after just installing them.
These HP documents: Printer Does Not Print Black Ink or Color Ink, or Prints Blank Pages & Troubleshooting Print Quality Issues are going to help you figure out if the print heads need to be replaced even though your Printer Status Report shows the health as "Good".
    I hope this helps.

  • Is it possible to manually reset ink levels for Canon printers on a Mac?

I apologize if this question has been answered elsewhere...
I just got ink cartridges refilled for the first time. The guy in the store said the chip on the tanks was designed to prevent refills but there was a way to reset the ink levels. On a PC, it seems.
Can anyone tell me with any certainty whether/how to do this if it's doable? I've messed around in my printer utility for way too long...Thanks.

According to the Canon web site, the reset is performed via the control panel of the printer - it is not performed via the driver settings so it won't matter that you have the machine connected to a Mac.
Have a look at this page
    http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/8000145501.html
You will see that for the CHECK CARTRIDGE error, sub-code U130, the following is the cause and workaround.
    Cause
An ink tank that was once used up or refilled may be installed.
    Action
Although it is possible to continue printing by holding down the Stop/Reset button for more than five seconds, this operation will release the function for detecting the remaining ink level.
