Inplace upgrade Windows 2012 DC to Windows 2012 R2

Hi
We plan to upgrade some of our DCs from Windows 2012 to Windows 2012 R2.
Theese DCs is on a DMZ holding our virtual machines management servers so they are not the most critical DCs but they are critical enough to not working for a longer time.
Normally we dont do inplace upgrade but this is more of quick solution to raise the servers to the same OS level
So has anyone done an inplace upgrade from 2012 to 2012 R2 on domain controllers? Any problems?
We have two DCs, in differents locations.
BR

Yes, we've upgraded some of our DC's from Server 2012 to Server 2012 R2 without any issues at all. Obviously you want to do them one at a time, but we found it completely straight forward.
In fact, if it wasn't for some unrelated legacy issues at one site (old servers preventing us upgrading that sites DPM install as DPM 2012 R2 doesn't support them, but DPM 2012 doesn't support Server 2012 R2) we'd have upgraded all our DCs by now.

    Hi
Is it possible to do inplace upgrade?
    I have Windows Server 2008 R2, SCCM 2012 R2 CU1, SQL 2008 R2, WSUS and MDT 2013.
Can I upgrade to Windows server 2012 R2 and SQL server 2012?
Are there any catches which I must know before upgrade?
Do I start upgrade with OS and then SQL?

The in-place upgrade of the operating system is not supported...

  • Inplace upgrade from 2012 to 2012 R2 fails when nearly complete

    Greetings,
I've tried several times to upgrade a Server 2012 Standard running Hyper-V to R2 several times now with no success.
The setup will start fine. There are no "compatibility" issues found or reported and the setup then proceeds as expected.
It gets all the way through the phases and past the installing features, reboots, does all the hardware devices install and completes that, then does another reboot and gives me a BSOD (sorry, windows could not start sad face)
It will then reboot again and just keep doing that until I catch the boot menu and select the option to roll back to previous Windows. It then goes through the revert process and gives me a functioning machine again.
It's very much like this thread:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/23d088d4-9ce0-4f12-a8c5-9bde3979e372/windows-server-2012-r2-upgrade-fails?forum=winserver8gen
I have checked and there are NO disk volumes at all without drive letters
I have tried setting all Hyper-V and other 3rd party app services to manual and disabled
I tried disabling VT support from the bios (this was an issue on a workstation upgrading from Win8 to Win8.1)
I've unplugged all external drives and the UPS connection (only mouse/keyboard attached)
This server is running a full GUI, and apart from the UPS and RAID disk controller there are no other apps or software installed.
I am doing the install from a copy of all the DVD ISO files placed on a directory on the C: and there is over 550GB free space
I first tried this several months ago and gave up. I just tried again today with a newer ISO of 2012R2 but still the same issue.

There is a minor BIOS update that I will probably apply to be sure, although the release notes only say it is for additional support for newer CPU's. All drivers are either updated with ones that are already R2 supported, or are devices that say to just
use the drivers that come OOB in 2012/R2. This is a "white box" that I've built myself, but it effectively uses the same "enterprise class" components and is fully 2012R2 compatible.
I was able to do a clean install of 2012R2 using a different drive that I connected up, so I know the system is capable of running R2, the issue seems to be somewhere in the upgrade process that messes it all up. I'd rather avoid having to do a fresh install
    at this time though.
Because the upgrade actually seems to get through all the steps of hardware detection etc I'm at a loss where the failure is. My first guess is that there is some "other" driver that the system has decided is more suitable for something (and is incompatible)
than the one I'm currently using.

  • Inplace upgread Windows 2008 R2 to Windows 2012

    Hello,
I am  testing inplace upgrade from Windows 2008 R2 to Windows 2012 R2. My test server is Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise, Evaluation and is a domain controller. I tried to perform an inplace upgrade, however it failed. The compatibility report says that
Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise cannot be upgraded to Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter Evaluation (Server with GUI).
I also update the schema first. It went fain and it was completed without error.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
Based on my experience, it is not supported to upgrade
from a Windows server evaluation version to another Windows server evaluation version. If you want to use Windows server 2012 R2 Datacenter evaluation version, you need to delete the previous operate system and perform a clean installation. Or
you can convert the evaluation version of Windows Server 2008 R2 to a full retail version and then upgrade it to Windows server 2012 R2 Datacenter version.

  • In place upgrade to 2012 R2 fails, Setup can't continue. Your computer will now restart, and your previous version of windows will be restored.

I have multiple Windows Server 2008 R2 machines in which I am attempting to do an in place upgrade to 2012 R2, and it is repeatedly failing.
Setup gets all the way through, and it says Getting ready, followed immediately by an error saying: Setup can't continue.  Your computer will now restart, and your previous version of Windows will be restored.
    I am attempting to install:
Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter (Server with GUI)
    x64 Date modified 3/18/2014
I have found several posts, many discussing how disk space can be an issue, I have increased disk space so it shouldn't be an issue.  I have also made sure the only only partition on disk 0 is C: and system reserved.
I have disabled all unessential services and went through and removed all unessential applications, and extras.  Still getting the error.

Any ideas on how I can resolve this, or further troubleshoot?

I also had this error: "Setup cannot continue. Your computer will now restart, and your previous version of Windows will be restored."
    trying to do a in-place upgrade of a Domain Controller Windows 2008 R2 to Windows 2012 R2.
The problem was the separated System Reserved Partition. After I removed using this instructions:

The upgrade ran ok, and now have my DC as Windows 2012 R2.

  • Can't upgrade Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise to Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard

Even though the "Windows Server Installation and Upgrade" TechNet article (DN627667) claims that I can upgrade Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 to Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard, it seems I can't. I get an error message saying "Windows 2008
R2 Enterprise cannot be upgraded to Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard (Server Core Installation). You can choose to install a new copy of Windows..." What might be causing this issue? Thanks for any input! :)

    Hi,
Firstly, for retail versions, Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with SP1 can be upgraded to Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard/Datacenter.
I assume you are running Windows Server 2008 R2 retail version, right?
In addition, it seems that in earlier version than Windows Server 2012,
once you install the server in Core or with GUI mode, you could not switch to the other. The only option was to rebuild the server from scratch.
Did you install Windows Server 2008 R2 in GUI? If yes, I recommend you to upgrade it to Windows Server 2012 R2 in GUI
mode to see if the issue persists. If it succeed and you want to run in server core, you can just remove the graphical shell and convert your Windows Server 2012 R2 to Server Core.
    Best regards,
    Susie
Thanks for replying Susie. The 2008 R2 software is the one provided by Microsoft for Action Pack subscribers, so I'm assuming it's not retail. That's another thing, I think I should be installing the GUI as my 2008 has a GUI, not just the server core. For some
reason I missed that and clicked on the server core only install!

  • Inplace Upgrade client OS from 2008R2 to 2012

I have several machines still on 2008 R2 that we want to inplace upgrade to Server 2012. I've tried looking for information on this and I am not having any luck.
I'm assuming I could use my updated/captured 2012 .wim file and a task sequence to do so, but I haven't really found any information/articles/guides discussing this exact scenario.

What do you want to upgrade exactly? Site servers or site systems? If so: that's not supported.
Or whatever OS? If so: ConfigMgr cannot perform inplaces upgrades - only wipe and load (with capturing and restoring the user state).

Dont look for WinPE drivers. WinPE is just a slimmed down version of the full OS.
    http://foxdeploy.com/2013/10/02/differences-in-winpe-versions/
Since you are using WinPE 5.0 x64, you want Windows 8.1 x64 drivers.
What model are you trying to image? Are you sure drivers are needed at all? Can you boot up to WinPE 5.0 and get an IP?

  • In place upgrade Windows 2008 and SQL 2008

    Hi all,
We are planning to upgrade to Windows 2012 and SQL 2012 , can we take this in-place upgrade path in the following order ?
    Setup 1 Host with 2 VM's running Windows 2008 R2 on Host and Windows 2008 R2/sqL 2008 on VM's.
    1. Host1(running 2 VM's) - In-place upgrade windows 2008 R2 to windows 2012 R2
    2. VM1 on host1 - In place upgrade windows 2008 R2 to Windows 2012 R2
    3. VM2 on host1 - In place upgrade windows 2008 R2 to Windows 2012 R2 (AD Server)
    4. SQL running VM1 - In place upgrade SQL 2008 with DB/reporting services to SQL 2012 DB/reporting services
All Servers ( including Host and VM's) are stand alone in a workgroup setup.( except one VM a stand alone AD server by itself).
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi,
If you want migrate from windows 2008r2 to windows 2012r2, you must install windows server 2008r2 sp1.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn303416.aspx
For the host 1 upgrade, please refer to the following:
    http://blog.powerbiz.net.au/server-2012/in-place-upgrade-from-windows-server-2008-r2-to-windows-server-2012/
For the SQL in-place upgrade, i think you may need to ask in SQL forums:
    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/home?forum=sqlservermigration
    Hope this helps.

  • Upgrade Windows 2008 R2 Standard to 2008 R2 Enterprise fails

    Hi,
I am trying to perform an in place upgrade from Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard to Enterprise. I want to setup some things with failover clustering. The install goes all the way to the last step where it is transferring files and then it hangs. This server
is in my home and I don't have a plethora of servers to play with so I need to upgrade. This server is an HP ProLiant ML330 G6. My other server is a DL385G2 running 2008 R2 Enterprise. They are different because I was scouring eBay and pounced when a deal
    came up. :-)
This server is a DC and it is running:
    DHCP
    DNS
    Exchange 2010
    MS Forefront Security
    Print Server
    DFS Namespace
DFSR (I have a second server that it replicates with)
All HP services (But I disable them for the upgrade)
I suspect that it is failing on a print driver but I am not sure. I disabled all non-MS services from boot. I also added the system environment variable with the iphlp dll. (can't recall it right at this moment)
The way I have been doing this is to power off the server, break the RAID 1 O/S mirror by removing 1 of the drives, power up and run the upgrade. If it fails, I power off, insert the drive I removed and pop out the "upgraded" drive. Boot up, pop
in the failed upgrade drive and let it rebuild.
Any thoughts? The last time it failed I let it back out the upgrade and I copied off a bunch of the setup log files before I restored the previous mirrored drive.
I am also contemplating upgrading this server to 2012 R2. Would using my RAID 1 method above work? I don't know if the upgrade will change something with the server's computer account therefore not allowing me to revert to 2008 R2.
Lastly, I know that I shouldn't have all of these services on one server, but this is in my home and not a work environment. It runs fairly flawlessly.

    Hi,
In addition to Dave Patrick, what is the error message when you upgrade failed?
    Meanwhile, please check this article:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/server_core/archive/2009/10/14/upgrading-windows-server-2008-r2-without-media.aspx
It seems like the server can't be a DC at the time of upgrade.  If you demote a DC using dcpromo, you can upgrade, then re-promote it.
    Regards.

  • Upgrading SCVMM 2012 SP1 to 2012 R2

Please forgive me I've missed something obvious, but I have yet to see any documentation on how to upgrade SCVMM 2012 SP1 to the just-released R2. Running the setup detects that two components are already installed on the machine (the server management console)
and doesn't appear to present any upgrade options. The version its detecting as installed is SP1, not R2.
What's the upgrade process? Is there a document that discusses the 2012 SP1 -> R2 upgrade?
    Thanks

Upgrading to Virtual Machine Manager 2012 R2
VMM also does not support in-place upgrade. You have to uninstall VMM and retain the database. Before uninstalling VMM first uninstall any Update Rollup if you have such. After uninstalling VMM, ADK (Windows Assessment and Deployment Toolkit) 8.0 also have
to be uninstalled. Before starting the VMM 2012 R2 installation you have to install ADK
8.1. After VMM 2012 R2 installation is easy. You have to point a few settings, the installation will detect that you want to make upgrade to existing database and after a few minutes you will be upgrade to R2. After successful upgrade you need to start
the console and update your VMM agents also.

  • In-place Upgrade Server 2012 to R2 running DFS-N and DFS-R roles

    Hello,
I have 2 servers running DFS-R and DFS-N running Windows Server 2012. I am planning to do an in-place upgrade to 2012 R2. Is this supported?

    Hi Irfan,
Yes, you can upgrade Windows Server 2012 to 2012 R2 to deploy a later version of DFSR. DFSR must be recreated for that server and perhaps for the entire Replication Group depending on the server’s place in data origination.
For more detailed information, please refer to the articles below:
