Input jack

Hi,
my input jack is failing : when nothing is plugged, it appears to switch to optical (red light comming from inside). No sound from the speakers.
When I plug in (headset or audio system) it works fine. As soon as I unplug it goes back to optical.
I have been told the fix would need a replacement of the mainboard...
Any solution (by the way it happen just after 1 year...)

It is a mechanical switch.
By plugging and unplugging the jack with purpose you  maybe able to get the switch to flip.
You can try a non metal item inserted to flip the switch-  caution of course in this method at your own risk.
It is soldered to the logic board.

  • How do I make use of the Composite Video input jack on my HP pavilion Elite m9150f computer?

I have a Pavilion Elite m9150f computer that has front panel jacks labeled "Composite Video Input, and Audio left and Audio right input" They are all RCA type.None of the PDF type manual files mention these jacks.I would like to make use of them to input video from either my old VCR that has the same output jacks and or a DVD player that is also equipped with the same set of output jacks.Finaly, I would like to know what programs should I use to view the video that I connect to these input jacks? Thanks for any and all ideas.

If your m9150f still has Cyberlink DVD Suite Deluxe and the Hauppauge TV tuner installed, then you can use Cyberlink PowerDirector v6 to capture home videos from a VCR as MPEG2 movie clips (.mpg). The files can then be played using Windows Media Player or burned to disc using Windows DVD Maker. You can also edit the movie clips with PowerDirector or other video-editing software. MPEG2 video is not ideal for editing: there will be some loss of picture quality when the video is re-encoded. To minimize that, make your edited videos short and do not reduce the bit rate. Note: The jack on the back of the m9150f is Video Composite-01, the one on the front is -02. Be sure to select the right capture source in PowerDirector's Capture / Device Setup / Video Setup tab. I can't think of any good reason to use Composite jacks for DVD input as long as your m9150f has a functioning DVD drive.

  • How to I change my headphone jack to a input jack

I have a macbook pro and wonder if I can change the headphone jack it an input jack so I can copy my record collection.  Other sites said to look for a drop down under sound but these isn't that option on my computer

so there is no way to input sound?
Keep in mind that serious audio enthusiasts would not use a built-in audio input, because of the high level of RF noise inside any computer case and to use a better jack than the mini 1/8" jack used on most Macs and PCs. So even if a computer had a built-in port, those enthusiasts would still prefer to use an external USB (or FireWire) interface for better quality and more input connector types.
Because a wide range of these interfaces are sold from cheap to pro, there are actually lots of ways to input sound into your Mac.
If you do copy your record collection, make sure that the interface or the USB turntable includes a proper photo pre-amp.

  • IPod not working with headphones or input jack

I guess I'm probably effed, but I dropped my iPod mini today, and now it only works thru my computer. not thru headphones or input jacks. I imagine I damaged my input device.
    Any ideas?

Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty (or warranty does not covering the dropping)and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ or ifixit at your own risk

  • Recording from input jack

can GB record analog and convert to AIFF using the input jack hooked up to (analog) tape deck? I've hooked up the deck and get a meter reading in Preferences , but don't know which program to record it with. If not GB is there another?

You can use GB to record from your tape deck - make sure you select the line-in as the audio input in GB!

Otherwise, there's a lot of freeware or shareware audio editors available that are better suited for that purpose (and less confusing for the beginner):

  • Input Jack Noise Problem

I am attempting to record records with my eMac. I have a turtable hooked up to a pre-amp. I am getting noise at the y-cable that is RCA jacks on one end, small stereo jack at the other. I plug this into the input jack and I am getting a cycling popping sound. Discussions on a record forum suggest that the input jack is set up for recording microphones and is too sensitive for "line in" type sound.
I have gone into my system preferences and adjusted the input volume down, but I am still getting noise.

    Which HD do you have?
    1. There is a constant noise from it and by
monitoring the fan sensors it have concluded that
they are not to blame. Altough it sounds like a fan
that is constantly on because it sounds like air
flowing inside the computer. As far as i can tell the
noise seems to be most apparent under the trackpad.
This noise is on from the moment i turn on the
    machine until i shut.
It might just be the sound of the hard drive spinning. They don't appear to ever spin down. Especially the 7200 one like I have.
    2. I belive or am imagining to my self that the
harddrive is becoming louder when writing/reading
    activity.
It not just your imagination runnin away with you. On occasions mine makes some clicks, etc. when reading or writing.
So from these two issues i tought it migh have been
the harddrive that had some fault on it, but i cant
seem to find any, the S.M.A.R.T. status is verified
and there is never any sounds which might suggest bad
    sectors on it.
I think it just may be "normal" for these drives.
    3. Every 2-3 secconds there is a faint noise from the
PowerBook and i belive that this might have something
to do with the Power as when it is not pluged into
the mains there is no sound. It sounds like a very
    quite heartbeat monitor.
    No clue what that is.

  • Sound Input Jack

I use my sound input jack to digitize music from my stereo and also for a microphone for voice recognition software. Switching the lines requires crawling behind my desk, and I'd like a more convenient solution. I've searched for an extention cord that would accommodate the extra-long, 4-conductor microphone plug (as well as the standard plug from the stereo) so I can switch the cords from my seat, but I can't find one. Can anyone suggest a retail source? Or can I use a microphone with a USB connection?
    Many thanks!

  • Input Jack Bad?

I recently bought the new white macbook, should't I be able to plug a cord from the headphone out of my video ipod to the input on the macbook and get sound? When I do no sound plays, even though I can see the input meter moving up and down with the volume of the ipod. Also when i switch the input source to microphone, no sound, even though I can see the input meter moving here as well. I have checked all of the obvious, everything is turned on but still no sound. Sound works in all other aspects, when I called applecare they said that mac's do not work like this as far as plug and play on the input, and i needed some type of "special" software to play the ipod?
    Any suggestions?

Yes it is normal for the audio meters to behave as you describe.
Various software will do what you are asking. The Macbook is not intended to be a standalone audio amplifier. That is why it does not automatically play sound out its speakers that you input thru its audio input jack. Any software that is made for accepting audio in thru that jack will play it thru the speaker (if that is part of its function to do so) or you can use LineIn to accomplish what you are asking. It is free.

  • Tech Specs of the audio input jack? (which is better, an iMic, or the MBP?)

Well because the iMic has such a cheap sounding/terrible audio output....
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2132385&tstart=0
....I am trying to figure out which would be better for the audio INPUT?
I am surprised to see that both the iMic and the combined jack on the 13" MacBook Pro seem to record in stereo, but technical wise, which is better? I DO know that the iMic is better for non-amped mics, that the iMic will pre-amp the signal where as the MBP will only accept line-in signals. So other then that, which is better?
    Thanks,
    Scott

Well, I sent back the iCrap...I mean iMic. I had to take a loss of $10 but oh well. (stupid apple return policy.)
Anyways, my solution was to buy a similar adapter off ebay for only $7. This USB interface is not a brand name one, it is one of those "china knock-off's" but it works. The Audio output it a lot louder but still slightly distorts like the iMic. However, the audio input works just fine. So my solution is to use BOTH the external USB interface, and the jack on the MBP at the same time. That will give me the best of both worlds. AND, it only cost $7 and came in 3 days, vs the adapter I bought from apple that coast over $35 and took a MONTH to ship.

  • Recording analog devices (LPS, Tapes) through line-in input jack

I'm looking to record my old LP's and tapes through the line-in jack into iTunes. Does Garage Band allow you to do this or do I need additional software.
    Thanks, Mike

The Griffin iMic is a recommended piece of kit for connecting turntable/tape/mini-disc and it comes with the program 'Final Vinyl' which includes a pre-amp for turntables. However, I had frustrating problems with FV whilst converting my LP, tape and mini-disc collection to iTunes (should complete it around my 128th birthday...) so I bought Wire Tap from Ambrosia and it's much easier to use. I use FV to monitor the input and WT for the conversion to mp3 or AAC. Also, you can record any sounds coming in online, if you want to, live or using its in-built timer, which is great for recording online radio or streamed music.

  • Audio input Jack not working correctly! Please Help!

I have a usb guitar jack input to record into garage band, but when i plug it in it records the guitar, however monitoring doesnt work, and all audio from garage band wont play until i unplug it. Suggestions would be the best thanks

I had the same problem. Here's what fixed mine: Plug the headphones in the headphone jack on the mac, go to preferences and change your output to ''system setting''. Leave your input set to the USB input. Select the track you want to record on, then over on the right hand side where the track info is, under ''monitoring'', click ''on''. You may have to hit the record button to get the sound to come out at first..sometimes its like that, sometimes it'll work..That did it for me. Let me know if you have any more questions.

  • Line input jack connector size

Every stereo mini jack I try on my iMac audio input seems to be a less than perfect fit, I always seem to have problems getting the left channel. Is it not supposed to be a standard 3.5mm jack? The ouput isn't much better either....
    cheers for any help.

Yes that is the correct size. No issues here. Many someone has damaged it internally.

  • Dual 1.25 MDD audio/mic input jack broken--Need replacement parts??

Hello. I'm in need of the audio input/output 1/4" jacks on the rear of the logic board of my Mac dual 1.25 Mirror Door Drive tower. They appear to be assembled in one unit. It has "312HB" markings on it. Somehow the Mic input has physically broken and will not keep the 1/4" mic plugged in. Apple told me that I need to replace the entire board. I know that's not true. Everything works fine. I just don't have any audio/mic input. Does anyone know where I might find a replacement part or maybe even a junk logic board that I can grab the jack from and solder it onto my board? I've torn apart all my ancient PCs out in the shed and they don't have the same type units. Any help or tips would be great.
    Thanks much,
    Robert

I had started this quest when I found out that I could get several other brands of webcams other than the iSight. The problem is that most of the ones that I saw that did have a built in mic, needed to still be input into the audio in. I think I solved it tho. I finally won an iSight on ebay whch is supposed to have an internal mic and runs thru the firewire. I probably spent way too much but I know it's worth it to not have to deal with the headaches. The plug still bugs the heck out of me tho. I just always have to have everything in tip top shape.
