Input metering

I have a question about input metering without software monitoring while recording. I cannot find how to do  in LPX what I did in Logic 9.
In Logic 9, I had an input channel with the following plugins:
- level meter
- limiter
I used this input channel to record to different audio tracks (one at the time).
In Logic 9 the level meter always showed the incoming signal. And the level meter always worked. Very useful for setting the level. And keeping an eye on the level during recording. I think the little meter next to the audio channel is not enough for this.
Is the routing changed in LPX? In LPX I have to turn on software monitoring before the meter shows the incoming signal. But I don't want software monitoring. I already have the direct signal routed to my monitors. And hear the delayed signal mixed with the direct signal when I turn on software monitoring.
Any ideas how to solve this? I think the little meter next to the audio channel that starts working when I arm the track really is not enough. And I miss the limiter in the input chain.

I found the problem. The channel wasn't an input channel although I thought it was. I modified the channel in the environment and everything works fine again!

  • How do I turn on input metering?

Have recently changed fro Audition 2 to Audition 3.
I used to double left click the "levels" metering bar at the bottom to activate input level monitoring. Now It doesn't seem to do anything until I actually start the recording ( a bit late to do anything about overload methinks). I think I've tried all the right click menu items associated with the "levels" panel and the "options" > "monitoring" choices but nothing seems to make this behave like AA2.0 used to. What have I missed?

Thanks for the replies. I had tried right clicking and all the other methods as stated in the OP. I had even read the relevent sections in the manual!
Turns out I'm having problems with channels 1 and 2 on my MAYA44MK2 soundcard and both of my powered microphones. I was digging myself deeper and deeper into a hole until I stepped away, thought about it, and did a test recording from an electric bass into channels 3 and 4. That worked OK and the meters behaved as per the answers above.
Still miss the double click feature which I had got used to with AA1.5 and AA2.0

  • Built-in Input Static

I am trying to record my guitar through the built-in input on my Macbook Pro. I set the sound preferences of my Mac to read from the line-in. Everything appears to work fine. When I play a note on my guitar, the input level reacts accordingly. Nothing abnormal. The problem is when I attempt to use Logic Pro 8 or Garageband to record. I get this annoying, random, static noise. I have it set to monitor the input and the input meters are even picking up the static noise. The static dies slightly as I play, but returns at full power when I stop. I have tried unplugging my guitar from the computer, to see if that was the cause of the problem, but it is not. It happens just when I have it set to pick up the audio from the built-in input, even if nothing is plugged into it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! : )

What type of Mic or input device are you using? It needs a line mic. Could try a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.

  • Simultaneous audio from outputs 1-2 and outputs 3-4?

    Hi guys,
How do I get simultaneous audio from outputs 1-2 and outputs 3-4? I'm running Logicpro 7.1 through an M-Audio FW 410 hardware interface.
I'm trying to set things up so I can monitor through my mixing board to eleminate the weird echo sound you get in your headphones when recording.
I thought I could do it in logic by creating an ouput 1-2 and output 3-4 channel strip where ouput 3-4 will have the "i/o" plugin and in the plugin settings, Out would be set to 3-4 and input set to 1-2, this way sound will always come out of output 1-2 which will go to my speakers and output 3-4 to my mixing board. Please help!

I'm trying to set things up so I can monitor through my mixing board to eleminate the weird echo sound you get in your headphones when recording.
The 'weird echo sound' is because you are hearing Logic's software monitoring alongside direct monitoring of the inputs (either via the interface, or your mixer, depending where the headphones are plugged in.)
You can avoid this by setting the monitoring level on the record-enabled track to zero. (recording tracks have two level settings. Normal playback and record input monitoring. See page 282 in the Logic Pro reference manual.) It will not affect your record levels, or your input metering.

  • Setting tracking levels

My signal path for recording electric guitar: Behringer DI > Scarlett 18i20 > Logic Pro. Given that the Scarlett's meters and Logic's meters are both dBFS, I would expect that, with pre-fader metering turned on in Logic, recording to a channel strip with no insert effects should result in in meters in Logic exactly (or at least closely) matching the input meters on the Scarlett (whose meters are after the input gain stage). Nonetheless, the levels in Logic are consistently about 10 dB higher than they display on the Scarlett. It's not really a problem (if I get too hot of a signal I can just turn down the input gain on the Scarlett), but it just seems kind of inexplicable.
    Any thoughts?

I think you probably understand this... none of Logic's channel strip/mixer faders affect record level only playback or monitoring level, record level is set (in your case) with the Scarlett hardware, if there is too hot a signal it will be within the Scarlett hardware, you would hear distortion from the hardware rather than Logic.
Logic can can overload your hardware's output stage on playback if the Master bus level starts heading the red with any consistency.
There is one little used Environment object that does affect recording, the Input channel strip, you can print effects...etc. This is something you would create in the Environment.
You might try downloading the "Reaper" MIDI/Audio sequencer.. an amazing program with something like a 60 day free trial, very small in size, last I looked under 15MB with a feature set that is second to none. Expertly programmed and affects none of your other software, installs nothing that affect the operating system, basically a stand alone application.

I have nothing to do with the company, just a simple way to check your measurements.

  • Logic has started behaving sluggishly

    Hi
Logic has started behaving sluggishly & I have no idea why this should be.
For example if I try to create a new audio/instrument channel there is a definate pause before it is created almost as though the program is searching.
This causes things like the input meters on the mixer to freeze for a while before starting to work again & the song position line will stop, although the audio still plays back normally.
The CPU Meters don't show an excessive CPU usage & I have emptied my hard drive as much as possible onto an external Hard Drive.
All my Logic Projects are stored on an external drive.
Has anyone any idea why this has started to happen & any ideas as to how I can cure this?
My OS is Lion 10.7.3 & the machine is an iMac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB of Ram.

  • Advice on Limiting

    Hi Everyone,
Recently I did a film mix for an indy film which I scored (fortunately the director wanted the music up!). I'm not an engineer per se, though I'm good with EQ and setting levels. The mix came out good and the director and editor are happy. But... I'm of the mind that the mix needs to be compressed or limited or something, because there are some sections which are a little too loud overall, and others where the volume should probably come up.
I rarely use compressors or limiters because I have a very hard time deliberately squashing dynamics. But I think I have a case here where I need to treat the overall mix with one of those FX.
So I'm looking for some advice on how to approach this task, using only Logic plugs:
    1. I'd like to make the overall level compatible with commercial DVD movie soundtracks (fx/dialog/music), and I'd like to know what's the peak level that I shouldn't exceed?
    2. Maximize the volume (admittedly I don't understand how this works, but in the past I've seen engineers use a plug called Loudness Maximizer on tracks and it adds a certain amount of oomph)
    3. Suggested approaches for setting up Logic's compressor or maybe AdLimiter (never used it before) across my 2-mix.
    Many thanks!

    good eeevvvvvening..........,(barrrump - da de-da-da dah-ta dah.)
first off, goto the sonalksis site and d/l there essentials collection.
    30days, no hassles.
    their compressor is very nice.
    anyway, try this:
set logic's comp up as a leveller:
    slow attack ~50ms,
    slow-med release ~150ms- 500ms
    ratio : 1.50:1 or less
deep threshold(-20 to -30) for -3 to 6 db GR.
knee: 0.5(~half way, more towards soft)
    auto: off
clip: off, or soft. (soft will boost the level in the upper mids).
the GR meter should hardly move if set correctly.(not like with peak limiting.)
the attack and release settings have to be adjusted by ear for the program at hand.
you can get a nice bounce into things if the release times' not too long.
btw, check your mix's thru level by bypassing the comp.
i attempt to get my mix peaks at ~ -9db to -6db., and even lower -12, for soft pieces. (before the comp.)
i would test these settings by mixing out a bit of the program.
inspect this waveform and compare to an untreated example of same.
if working properly the sustained parts should have increased in level, but there should still be a very defined attack at the start of the waveform(like the original).
ok, next set up logic's AdLim after the comp.
feed it 0db(unity) from the comp if possible(don't feed it too much, it gets "fat" very quickly).
leave the AL input scale at 0db.
move the gain up (underneath it) until the out meters are reaching full scale on the louder peaks of the program.(if they don't hit the top, feed it more input.)
back off the "out ceiling" a little.
the goal is to have the program peaks in the 0 to -3db regions in the out meter, and definitely bouncing around. if they are static at the top you'll get a sonic brick.
also, the gain control will start to color the output if pushed.
and, the input meters should show a lower reading at anytime than the out meters.
the trick is to get the AL to do it's job without distorting in any way.
i mostly use the "opt fit" in the extra parameters drop down(with a 200ms delay.)
the compressor setting is critical for this to work, and it will take some fiddling between the two units to suit the program.
the sonalksis comp IS cleaner when pushed than logic's.
personally, i'd mix out an untreated version of your program and experiment on it, so you can easily compare the waveforms.
    DR9.

  • Garageband s/pdif

I have a Macbook with Leopard. I also have a M-Audio Firewire Solo with s/pdif in and out. I am inputing optical data from a Fostex DMT vl via the s/pdif input on the Solo. The Solo software mixer window in the Macbook shows the computer is receiving a good signal from the interface. The bar on the Garageband window says Garageband s/pdif. When I try to record the data I can barely get anything when I try to record. I can hear it very faintly with earphones but thats it and it barely registers on the input meters of the track. I have been told that Garageband cannot deal with s/pdif data. Is this true? Any ideas?

Same problem with my VS 1680 and garage band, any insights since your last post?

  • Audio recording with QT Pro vs. QT Broadcaster

Need to record a seminar (audio only) and live webcast parts of it. Audio goes from mixer to line in on Macbook with QT Pro and QT Broadcaster. Broadcaster will record to disk, but it appears to have no metering. It also appears that to record with Broadcaster, you have to be broadcasting. I successfully recorded with QT Pro while broadcasting. Questions:
    1) With QT Pro, how far into the red is safe on recording?
    2) Are there any input metering options (like displaying the peaks for a second or two)?
    3) Can you change the default naming from Audio n.mov to something else?
    4) With QT Broadcaster, is there any level indication - how can you tell if your level is good?
    5) It seems simplest to record with QT Pro and just turn on Broadcaster when needed. QT Pro won't let you pause a recording and resume with the same file, but I can live with that. But is there a better way to do this?
    Thanks,
    John

    OK, that is really true...
While I was waiting for a reply, I tried what David suggested and used my video Hi8 to simulate a transfer with no sound except the one from my tapes....and guess what ????
    it works !
I am going to try it again with STP and QT7 under same conditions.
Funny that these boxes seem to need a video running.
Even more than that, I have tried an empty tape...and it does not seem to work !
Which means you really need an active signal
thanks a lot for this reply which is very helpful

  • Panning problems

Hello everyone, I am having some really weird and annoying panning issues, and I hope anyone would share their wisdom.
First off i am using Logic Pro 8, with an M-Audio NRV-10 Firewire mixer.
The actual problem is that when I pan left on an instrument or the main output, my mixer does not pick this up and still plays through both speakers, in logic it shows that it is only coming through the left channel. Even crazier, when i pan right the volume gets reduced, once again within logic it says its playing through the right channel. I have updated all my drivers and tried to go through everything I can think of, but i have not found the problem.
Everything works fine when it is played through the internal speakers of the mac. I have opened the NRV-10 audio interface software and had a look at the meters (meters tab) while the music was playing; when the balance is at 0 both the Input (top half) and the output (bottom half) show a reading on both meters. When i pan left, the output shows the reading of the left channel whist the input on the top half reads both channels playing the same as if the balance was at 0. When I pan right, the output reads the right channel being played, however the input meters read nothing and no sound is coming out whatsoever.
Anyone with an idea, I have run out...
    Thanks in advance.

Maybe something is wrong in the Audio Midi Setup of your Mac. Open that program and check the Output configuration for your Interface.

  • Noisey shotgun mic setup - need advice

I am using my Zoom H4n recorder with a rented Rode NTG-8 shotgun mic. So far, my results have been very noisey. Below is an example of the audio without any changes, and the second example has some amplification and noise reduction in audition. I was indoors when this audio was captured, and there was little to no noise in the house.  This is my first time using a shotgun with my H4n, so any feedback is appreciated.
Edit: I should clarify. My question is more about what settings I can change on the H4n to reduce noise, rather than fixing it in Audition.
    With no changes:
    Noised reduced/amplification:

Have you posted this also to the Zoom forum?  There are a number of regular contributors there who are also users of the H4n.
Perhaps, in order to hear what "effect" the shotgun mic has on your recording it would be useful to carry out the same test, but using only the H4n's internal mics.  Certainly, the level of hiss on your recording is rather high!  I own and use the H2n, often with a Rode Videomic Pro, and obtain rather better results than you are getting.
As to the settings you mention, the two lo-cuts are, IMO, only serving to "emphasise" the hiss.  237Hz (is that a "standard" setting on the H4n?) is actually removing some of the definition of your voice, I think.  The usual advice in situations like this is to NOT record with any "effects" on the recorder, but to use the facilities of Audition to "correct/improve" your recording.  I suspect also that "Auto-Level" is doing you absolutely no favours, by essentially raising the level of the hiss in the "silences" between words to the point where it is intrusive, to say the least.
My method of working, using the Rode VideoMic, is to record to the H2n without any effects, allowing peak levels (as shown on the H2n's input meters) to reach a maximum of about -12 to -6.  Yes, the resulting recording is often quite surprisingly "low" level, but using AA to Normalise to, say, -3dB, sometimes with some compression if there are especially quiet passages that need to be raised, gives me an audio track which is suitable for what I need.  Occasionally I may also need to use Noise Reduction (and BTW I'm afraid you have rather overdone this with the result there are some quite unpleasant artifacts on your voice), in which case I am fortunate in being able to call upon Izotope RX3 Advanced to carry out this work.
So, the strict answer to your question as posed, IMO, is set the H4n to record everything "flat", i.e. no settings at all other than the manual setting of the input level!

  • I Recorded 4 audio tracks, could hear it in the headphones while recording. Meters show input. No playback sound. Advise.

How can anyone advise on such a cryptic post, all we can do is guess.
Which version of Logic, what audio hardware are you using?
    Have you read the manual?

  • Input Level Metering

I'm new to Soundtrack Pro, but have 10+ years of experience with Logic. I am attempting to record simultaneous audio on multiple tracks, each to a monaural file. My dilemma is that input levels do not display on the channel strip meters during recording (unlike Logic and most other DAW's) and am only able to see one meter at a time on the meter tab. Am I missing something?? How can I monitor recording levels all channels simultaneously? I can seemingly only have multiple meters displaying on the tab if I record to a multi-channel file on one track. UGH!

Hello. I think FCP isnt the right app for recording multiple tracks at once. I would propose a Sequencer like Logic or the new Sondtrack Pro pre.

  • I can see the input but have no output - and more!

    Howdy,
I am dead in the water and am not sure what to do next.
Here's my system and everything attached to it.
    OSX 10.4.11 / 2 x 2.66 Intel / 8 gb ram Mac Pro 1,1
Apogee Ensemble - Firewire bus 1
    Maestro 1.7
    Daemon v1.4
    Driver v2.2Ofc9
    Firmware v1.9.24
    FPGA v1.31
    CPLD v1.6.1
Powercore X8 - Firewire bus 2 (separate card)
    Software version 3.2.0.38
    Hardware version 3.2.0.36
    Firmware 3.0.0.3
    Novation Remote SL 25- USB
Line 6 Tone Direct - USB
    POD Farm / Gear Box
Everything was working fine until recently.
Now, I cannot monitor inputs when recording real instruments. I can see the input on the level meters in Ensemble and in Logic's Channel strip but can't get any output in Stereo or headphones. After I record, it will playback what was input but without being able to hear what I'm playing, it's kind of pointless.... as a sidenote, I can hear / monitor the input normally if I record MIDI or software instrument.
Also, I am getting the" Record drive/partition “Audio Files/Audio Recording” not found!" message which has already been reported as a bug although, for me, it's a new problem and seems to be related to the other problem.
The only changes I have made in my system recently was to add a couple of new PowerCore plugs - the CL1B compressor and the Transient Modulator - which were both working fine until this. They still work fine on already recorded tracks.
I have reinstalled Logic, reset hardware, unplugged / plugged everything back in / ran Combo install for 10.4.11 / upgraded to FWAudio 2.2.0, reinstalled Ensemble, updated software, etc.,
    I am stuck. Any suggestions???
    Thanks In Advance

You're welcome. But I am afraid this is over my head - maybe you should contact Chris Lawson from Apogee - he posts here when there are questions concerning their stuff. and this seems hardware related to me. Maybe repost your question and use the word Apogee in your topic title, that'll get his attention...

    M Wohlgy,
(I know this is months after your post.)
Control of the iMic volume is in the Preferences pane called "Sound". You can set the output and the input levels there.
Remember the iMic's position switch works only for the imput, either close to the microphone icon for "microphone" or away from it for "line in".
    I use the iMic exclusively.
