Input & output looks awful...

Purchased the Photoshop Elements/Premiere Elements bundle last night, but I'm having an issue on the Premiere side.
Video clips (AVI, MPG, MOV, even VOB) that normally look great when played inside Windows Media Player or QuickTime look awful when brought into Premiere Elements for editing, and look just as bad however the file is output, whether to the PC or to DVD. The video is of much lower visible quality and is quite blocky.
Is there a setting that needs to be enabled that I'm missing?

• I am in mavericks disk utility recovery mode as my mac book will not boot up & stays only on the grey apple screen. When I verify the disk I get open error5 :input /output error on Syst stuck on 1 minute pouring out over 50 error messages & still counting

I am in Mavericks disk utility recovery mode as my mac book pro will not boot up & stays on the Apple grey screen . When I verify disk permissions I get
Open error 5:"input/ output error" on syst with over 50 of this messages & still counting . Disk Utility says 1 minute
But this has been going on for over 10 mins .
I can not verify disk or repair disk .
I have tried to reinstall mavericks operating system but it says my hard drive is locked which is very strange .
Does anyone know what is going on here ?
My system looks like it has been totally corrupted . Thanks Andrew

Could be. The "lock" isn't actually looking for a password.
WARNING: This will completely erase the ENTIRE hard drive.
What you would need to do is boot to recovery > disk utility > select the MAIN drive on the left side > partition > change partition layout from CURRENT to 1 PARTITION > ensure on the right side it says Format : Mac OSX Extended (Journaled) then push APPLY.
Then if it will allow us, close the windows until you see the 4 options popup again and select "Reinstall Mac OS X" select the Mac HD and you should be good to go!

• External Drive Disk Erase Failed with the Error Input/Output Error

I have 2 hard drives in an external FW800 enclosure that I am unable to format. When I go to initialize the drives in Disk Utility, I get the following error message: "Disk Erase failed with the error: Input/output error."
The drives show up in Disk Utility, but I can't repair them (that option is grayed out). Disk Utility correctly ID's the manufacturer of the drives (Maxtor), their size (200gb each), so it's obviously seeing that the drives are there. But it won't let me format them.
The drives are new, by the way; they don't have any data/files on them. I have Disk Warrior, but the drives don't show up there to be repaired -- probably because they aren't formatted yet.
After looking at other posts, I tried switching the jumper settings around on the drives -- from Master/Slave to cable select and back again, but it didn't help. I also tried doing a zero erase (even though the drives are new), zapping the PRAM -- again, no help.
One question I had is whether this could be a bad FW800 cable? The cable is new -- it came with the enclosure, which is an OWC Dual FW 800 enclosure. Other than that, does anyone have any other thoughts about what's causing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

SOLUTION!!!!
I had the exact same problem. I have the original 20 GB hard drive that came in my Powerbook G4 550MHz and a couple of years ago I traded up for a 60 GB drive and bought a FW/USB enclosure for my original drive to use it to backup my important files. I hadn't backed up in over a year (shame on me!) and I decided maybe I should erase the drive and start from scratch. It was connected via USB.
At that point DiskUtility gave me the exact same Input/Output error. I tried partitioning the drive into 1 or more partitions but came up with the same error. I couldn't figure out what was wrong so I decided to startup in OS 9.2.2, I did that and let it start up, then plugged in the hard drive and it gave me the standard "This disk is unrecognizable, do you want to eject or erase?" so I clicked Initalize. It worked!
Just make sure you choose the MacOS Extended option when initializing out of OS 9 (instead of the MacOS Standard option) so it can be read and viewed in OS X.
If your computer is too new to be able to boot from an OS 9 folder on your drive or an OS 9 CD, then see if a friend or a local library has older computers that are running OS 9 or can boot from it. If not let me know and you can send me your drive and I'll reformat it.
Kind of crazy...I haven't used the OS 9 partition on my HD in YEARS...was even thinking about erasing it since I don't use any Classic applications anymore...good thing I didn't!

• WD External Hard Drive will not format, "Input/Output Error"

Trying to reformat an old Western Digital external drive, immediate error in Disk Utility "Input/Output Error". Switched USB cords/ports, nothing. Just getting a second opinion before I trash it.
I know I can probably take out the drive and put it in an external case, but this was just going to be an extra drive for a friend, not worth the $20 for the case.
Thanks

I'm getting the same errors from both my USB ports when I try to format a brand new Maxtor 1TB drive.
I had noticed some strange errors a week ago when Time Machine was reporting an error saying it had failed (this was using a nother external firewire drive). Errors were (not verbatim) "error writing files" & "unknown error".
I naturally thought there was a prob with the ext drive, so knowing that I had at least a good full back-up on there, bought a new ext drive (larger) to perform a full backup on so I could reformat the firewire drive and utilise it elsewhere - but got errors when I tried to set it up as a Time Machine drive seconds after I took it out of the box.
I ran "Verify Disk" on my internal macbook HD and it reported some permission errors and mis-reported file sizes and told me to "Repair Disk". I did, and this stated it fixed a few things. Ran Verify again and it still reported some permission errors.
Now, this leaves me in a sticky spot. I can't format the maxtor external disk in order to manually copy over my disk content, it doesn't even show up in disk Utility or in Finder. I can't perform a Time Machine backup - as it can't see the maxtor disk. I can't do a TM backup on the old Firewire disk - due to the program errors. AND it appears I have permission errors on my internal HD.
Whatever course of action I take to correct these problems - I would like the knowledge that I have a full backup to restore from if things "head south" while I look to correct the HD permission issues.
Anyone out there with some REAL SMART ideas that can help me out here ?
Right now I'll even accept "Half Smart", "Clever" and "**** - Why Didn't I Think Of That" answers !

• Disk utility 'input/output error' message?

I am "creating an image" of a DVD using disk utility (prior to making a copy on a blank DVD disk). Why am I now rec'ing an 'input/output error' message? I have already copied several other DVDs from the same author (with her permission, they are not copywrited.) w/o a problem.
What's going on? original damaged? an incorrect step on my part? some sort of space problem? ( I have tons of room on my iMac.)
Thanks for your help.

Take a look at Cinematize 2, I've used it with iMovie 06 and iDVD 08. It has several modes of converting the data. One mode is called "lossless".
For the job you're doing you may prefer to use iMovie 06 instead of iMovie 08 (I would).
iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 is a terrific combination.
Your workflow would go something like this.
Use Cinematize 2 to create a Quicktime file from the DVD.
http://www.miraizon.com/products/products.html
Important that file into iMovie 06.
From iMovie 06, share to iDVD 08 (assuming you want a DVD).

• Leopard Disk Utility and Input/Output error messages.

This post is describing a problem I had and how I managed to fix it. When I was researching the Input/Output error message I was getting a couple of people had mentioned this fix on the apple discussion boards, so I thought I would add my fix to support them. (Isn't google fab!) I've no idea if this is the right place for this so please bear with me.
Okay a bit of background:- over christmas we treated ourselves to leopard and as my laptop is now three years old I decided to do a complete reformat and installation. I used my 60GB iPod as an external harddrive and backed everything up. Installed Leopard no probs and was a very happy bunny.
The problem:- I then wanted to remove everything off my iPod. So I thought "I know I'll use Disk Utility".... I tried it with the 'default' setting and got an Input/Output error message straight away (irrespective of whether I did it as an extended journal or not.) When I tried it with the Zero Out option (can't remember exactly what it's called) it came up with the Input/Output error message right at the very end. Argh! iTunes and Finder no longer recognised it, but Disk Utility did.
My research:- After using google I saw some guys on here talking about formatting proper external harddrives using leopards disk utility and they were getting the same messages as me. It turns out it is a fault with Leopards Disk Utility. So I did what the guys recommended.
The solution:- (Thank god I had tiger!) I put in my tiger installation disk, clicked 'install tiger' and restarted the laptop. I clicked my my language, but then rather than going through the actual installation process I went to the top menu bars and chose Disk Utility (using tiger's disk one rather than my laptop's leopard one.) And erased the iPod there. Now when I quit the installation and opened my laptop up properly it worked, both iTunes and finder could see it!!! (I just had to restore my ipod in itunes - and now I'm happily transferring all my music back!)
I hope this helps someone in the same position as me!

I took it to work to use my Windows PC to try and format the drive, but got the same problem. I figured either the drive (it's a 2.5" that used to be inside my AlBook) or the external housing it lives is was faulty. Only way I could test without spending more money is by putting the 2.5" drive inside my powerbook, and booting the (Ti) powerbook from a bootable firewire ipod. I successfully booted from the ipod, and had the same problem with the now internal drive: only visible in disk utility, any attempt to erase fails. Also, I plugged the small 10 GB drive that WAS in the TiBook (but which I removed to put the other, problematic drive in) into the external housing, and it connected to other machines just fine.
Turns out the problem is the hard drive itself.
So now my question becomes: If disk utility can see the hard disk when it is connected (I have it back in the external enclosure now), but gives "input/output error" messages when I try to erase/format it, is there any way I can salvage this drive? It's an 80 GB drive, and I was looking forward to making it my internal TiBook drive (replacing the old 10 GB drive that's in there now).

• I would like to connect speakers and microphone to my Mac but I only have 1 input/output

Hello!
My MacBook have only 1 miniJack input/output...
Is there a way or some hardware/software to connect my Mac to the speakers to amplify sound and, in the same time, the mixer to Mac to record?
Many thanks
Cristina

If the track you want isn't available in the Australian iTunes Store, then you will have to look for another source from which to purchase the music; another download store, import CDs, etc. Otherwise, contact the artist and/or the applicable record company and urge them to release the music in the Australian iTunes Store.
Regards.

• Input/Output And Method Not Found Problem

Ok so firstly I think I should apologise on two fronts.
Firstly, 'cause this is probably posted in the wrong board but I'm not sure this was suitable for the Swing board just 'cause I've been using Swing? And secondly 'cause the code I'm gonna post is so shoddy I would think this constitutes as flaim-bait. >_>
In my defense this is purely for a little class project to give something to write some documentation on so I'm really not too bothered about the efficiency or ace-mazingness of the end result. I just want it to work.
To the problem at hand.
I'm trying to write a program that asks the user a question and then outputs their answer to a file, from which a tally of answers can later be made for the purpose of displaying "results".
My problem is I've been having problems with the input/output of saving the answers given to the program.
I'm still learning and input/output is probably my weakest subject (other than, y'know, being good at Java). I've had a bash at it in the following code but all it does it overwrite what is in the file with a single answer so no list of results accumulate. I generally don't have an idea what to try for that one so any pointers would be appreciated.
Also, my second problem is, in trying to gather results by tallying what is contained in the file, I've run across a problem with the charAt() method not being found and I'm not sure why. Isn't that method a part of java.lang?
Here's the code thus far:

Oh, and in trying to work with it a bit further I realised I'm having a few problems with runtime errors due to exceptions. The first was due to the array being assigned out of bounds (fixed in the above code). But the second reads the following:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException
at Loadingsaving.load(CaseStudy.java:330)
at QuizResults.(init)(CaseStudy.java.259)
at GUI.(init)(CaseStudy.java:34)
at CaseStudy.main(CaseStudy.java:15)Not quite sure what this one means or how to handle it. =\

A NullPointerException means a method has been called on a null object, or a variable that isn't pointing to any object. Your Exception points to line 330, which is:
length = s.length();A NPE on that line means that s is null. So let's look at where s is set:
if (br.readLine() == null) return answerarray;
else s = br.readLine();s gets it's value from br.readLine(), so that method must be returning null. You have a logical error here. Look at your If-Else. It reads a line, makes sure it isn't null...then it reads another line. Well what if that line is null? You are performing 2 reads here instead of 1.
Since your If condition returns a value, there's no need for an Else. The code will continue on until it reaches another return. Try this:
s = br.readLine();
if (s == null) return answerarray;

• Frequency sweep input output

Hi
Using Labview 7.1 and PCI 6071 DAQmx card i want to design a frequency sweep application. I mean that i need my analogue output channel to give a sine wave with incremental frequency of 100 Hz step, starting from 10000 Hz untli 100000 Hz (10000 Hz, 10100 Hz...100000 Hz). This wave is applied on a kind of a transformer, and each time the frequency changes, i need an input channel to acquire another also sinus wave coming from this transformer and measure its amplitude, in order to examine its frequency response. So, i came up with the attached vi.
The problem is, that when "sweeping" takes place ,i get amplitude values between 2 and 6 or even 7 volts something that can't be happening. I know that the amplitude values i should get are around 2 volts (+/- 500 mV maximum).
I think, that the problem should be in some kind of "non-synchronization" of the input-output channels when the vi enters the loop to start changing the frequency.
Just to be more clear, i need my vi to do these steps in order:1. constantly output the 10000 Hz wave 2. acquire the input wave 3. measure its amplitude 4.transform the frequency into 10100 Hz 5. acquire the input wave 6. measure amplitude etc...
The odd thing is that when i physically connected the output channel with the input one to see if the frequency sweep is done, it worked fine. I mean that i did get in the input channel almost exactly the signal i generated.
Thanks in advance, and i hope i was not tiringly analytical..

sweep3.vi ‏140 KB

Hi
Please take a glance at the two attached vi's.
The first is the one i use in order to generate a steady frequency sinus wave, feed it to my transformer and acquire the also sinus output of the transformer through my input channel. Using two channels of an external oscilloscope i check and notice that for many frequency values, both sinus waves are steady and noiseless, with the expected amplitude voltages.
Now, using the second vi, in order to "sweep" the wave and check my transformers amplitude response, then these impossible amplitude "up's and down's" again came up.Again by looking at the oscilloscope's screen i can see the noisy waves tha "confuse" and the oscilloscope and my input channel, and so result in wrong amplitudes.
Based on the above, i have to assume, that the problem lies in the sweep mechanism design i use. Also, after trying several different ways to sweep, i came to the conclusion, that the problem comes up whenever i use the second Basic Function Generator.vi inside the loop. Could it be that it needs triggering again?
I'd really use some help, or maybe even ideas for different design approaches for the frequency sweep.
Thanks in advance

• Input/Output error plus CS5.1 download error (mac)

Hi. Sorry for the long story.
Yesterday, my Photoshop CS5.5 crashed and I was unable to open the program. I tried all my Adobe products and it was the same. I attempted to uninstall (for some reason Illustrator refuses to uninstall) and had hoped I could reinstall my Creative Suite 4 I purchased back in 2010. I also have a Photoshop CS5.5 disc- all with the serial numbers that came with them, too.
Here comes the problem on my end: my old computer cannot read discs anymore. I tried for several hours to get my MacBook to read the discs- nothing. So, I turned to the forums and found a download link for all of the previous versions of Photoshop. I found Photoshop CS5.5, I hit download. Everything goes smoothly until I look at what I've downloaded- it's CS5.1, not CS5.5
Adobe has mistakenly placed CS5.1 in the CS5.5 Photoshop download and no matter who I talk to through the web tech support they can't seem to understand what I'm trying to say. My serial number works but it's only for CS5.5, obviously. And yes, they've checked, it should still be valid for CS5.5, if I can ever get the download to work for me!
So concludes my first problem.
My second problem is with a message I keep getting when attempting to install any other version of Photoshop- the "input/output error" message. I figured, well, since I can't get CS5.5, I'll try my Creative Suite CS4. But after I download the .dmg and attempt to open the file and start the installation, I get this
I tried Creative Suite 4: Design Standard, Photoshop CS4, and Photoshop CS5- all gave me the same message. Is this an issue with my computer or an issue with the download?
For reference I have a MacBook Pro OS X 10.6.8 and I'm trying to install either Photoshop CS5.5 or Adobe Creative Suite 4: Design Standard and I have serial numbers for both

Use another browser for the download, though both your issues potentially point to your harddrive being on the verge of breaking down completely and/or your system requiring an operating system reinstall...

• Input / Output error for new HDD on MacBook Pro 5.5

Hi there,
New to Apple Support Communities
I have a problem with a MacBook Pro 5.5 Intel Core 2 Duo
Original Fujitsu 160GB HDD crashed and I replaced it with a Hitachi 250GB HDD.
Hitachi 250GB drive is partitioned to GUID Partition Scheme but when I try to format the drive in Disk Utility to Mac OS X Extended Journaled, I keep receiving an Input / Output error. I tried even erasing the drive and I get the same error.
I also tried using Diskutil in terminal window and I get Input / Output error.
I talked with a guy in work who knows about the Mac and he said the drive could be locked in which the Mac can't unlock to format the drive.
There is nothing wrong with the drive at all. It works perfect. I'm at a loss as to why the Mac won't install the OS X 10.5.7
I've looked at many Mac support sites for problems / solution but no solution
Could someone who has experienced this before please help to resolve my problem.
Regards,
DTreacy

Hi there,
An update on the MacBook Pro 5.5 problem.
Mac OS X seems to only install when the HDD is connected to the laptop as a USB drive.
When I put the drive back into the laptop, it won't boot to the OS.
The mount is /volume/Macintosh_HD.
I even tried reformatting the drive but got an error that it could not unmount the drive. I tried a force unmount which worked but the drive disappeared from the disk utility.
My only way to get the drive back was to connect it again as a USB drive and again I was able to install the OS again.
Can some help to resolve the problem. How can I make the drive boot to the OS when it is connected as an internal drive
Regards,
Dtreacy

• Text looks awful?

Hi all,
Using FCP 10.0.6 and when importing a video that has text on it, it looks awful. The text 'shakes' and doesn't look right at all. I use avidemux to change the look of a video, and FCP to put it in HD and sharpen it. However, whenever I put the video into FCP it always has problems with the video imported that aren't on the actual file. An example of what this looks like would be:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHJeWBmVR90&list=UUkxHI9k2Ir3epaJLdcttlbg&index=5
Can be seen at 1:45 in the video. Any way to remove this, or stop it from happening? My avidemux output settings are:
MPEG-4 AVC
Single Pass 10000kbit/s
MP3 (lame)
.MP4
Any help greatly appreciated,
Damien.

wotwotwot?
you have a low-quality, highly compressed source file and scales it to 'HDef'?
that just blows-up pixel-mud, doesn't 'create quality'.
by contrary: so-called scaling-effects could degrade quality, in your example, the font creates 'sub pixel'.
probably, you're using the wrong codecs to swap btw. the two tools.
use FCPX only to add your titles and 'changing the look'.

• Audio Input Output on MacBook Pro 13 inch

I want to buy a MacBook Pro 13 inch but the problem is the audio input output port.
I usually need to use both jacks because in one I record my guitar and in the other I use my headphones.
Is it possible to get a splitter and to make from one jack, two, input and output or do I need to buy USB headphones?
A splitter would be the best solution

From the manual:
+"*Audio out port.* Connect external speakers, headphones (including iPhone), or digital audio equipment. You can specify audio analog line in functionality, to support line-level microphones and audio equipment, by selecting Audio In in the Sound pane of System Preferences."+
+"Choose Apple () > System Preferences, and open Sound preferences. Specify whether you want the port to be used for audio input or audio output."+
This means you must choose whether you want the single audio port on the 13" MBP to be input or output. It mentions iPhone headphones, but those will work only as headphones, not as a combined mic/headset when connected to the MBP.
(As in, "Oh, now I get it!")
Thinking on your comment, I see what you mean by 'an extra port' - the iMic has both in and out, meaning you'd actually have three counting the internal port on the MBP.
Looking back at your first post, you mention USB headphones. That would be fine as well - set the MBP's audio port to be used for input, and connect the USB headphones and use those for output. No 'extra' port that way, and USB headphones are cheaper than an iMic.
EDIT: The caveat there is that the audio in on the MBP (true for all MBPs, not just the 13") is a line-level input, not a microphone input. So, the MBP is expecting a line-level signal, meaning preamplified audio. If your guitar puts out a line-level signal or you're using a powered mic, fine. Else, you may need the iMic, which can take either line-level or microphone (non-preamplified) input.

It looks like your disk drive may have bad sectors on it, and when the dd copy reaches those bad sectors, it reports an error. Check /var/log/messages on the OVM server to see if it reports disk errors.
