Input sound level

I use a recording program and when I start to record, the sound input level in sound preferences automatically slides to full loud.  I must slide back to the middle or get distortion or just too loud.  Why won't the level stay put?

Digital audio is stored as a series of samples, where each sample is the amplitude of the sound wave being recorded. The volume of the sound is the same as the amplitude of the sound, therefore, each individual sample is simply encoded as the volume of the sound.
So you break the mic input down into a list of samples (based on the sample size / number of channels) and keep a running average to determine the sound level.

  • Get input sound level from mic

I'm trying to find out how ( if possible ) to get the input sound level from the microphone.
Example : if someone screams into the mic it would return that it is loud or on a scale of 1 to 10 it would be a 10; and the opposite if someone was whispering.
    Any help would be great!

  • How do change the sound level input at the premiere cs6

    Hello:
I would like to know how to change the sound level input al the premiere cs6?.
    Sincerely, Gabriel Conde

The input sound levels will be determined by the media files you use.  The output volume can be adjusted in several ways.

  • Microphone calibration for a sound level meter

Hi I need an application for measure sound level by using the sound and vibration toolkit and severl microphones as input, but I don´t get the same values as a portable Phonic portable meter. I´m using a 60db gain preamplifier but when i use this value in the pregain scale voltaje to EU block I don´t get any value, but if I use -60 it works! is that correct?  on the other hand, I´ve seen a calibrate microphone block for the traditional daqmx  but I dont understand how to use it and I cant find examples. Do you have one? I have a cDAQ with 9205 A-input card.   Also, if I use the PC microphone input to get the data do I have to put an pregain value for the scale voltaje to EU block?
I need dome help please. Thanks a lot.

    ¡Hi mario_rojas!
I checked the documentation and SVL Calibrate Microphone (DAQmx) VI if you run it with the proper configuration it will measure the sensitivity of the microphone connected to the channel you specify.  Can you tell me what version of the Sound and Vibration Toolkit you are using? There are some specific inputs that you need to configure, but I need to know the version to tell you the values you need.
About the -60dB gain, it should work with +60. When I have the version of the toolkit I can check this out for you.
About the question for the PC microphone, you should not have to input a pregain value, since you do not have an intermediate amplifier between the microphone and the daq board, you just need to find the sensor sensitivity. We can use the SVL Calibrate Microphone (DAQmx) VI to find out if we don’t have that data in the specs.
I think we are dealing with the same problem in this forum:

I think it’s better if we continue working in one forum. Please let me know if this is the same issue, and if it is, in what forum would you prefer to keep posting.

  • Sound Level Pressure with several channel

    Hello,
I met a problem with the VI "SVL Exp Avg Sound Level.vi". It works perfectly if I make a measurement with a single microphone, but with more microphones I have some computation error with discontinuity depending on the buffer size.
The following message is given in Labview Help :
"The SVL Exp Avg Sound Level VI requires a continuous input data stream. An
internal mechanism automatically detects any sampling discontinuity and resets
    the filters. "
I suppose that there is a link with my problem, but I have no idea to correct it.
Here is my VI which is composed of a producer/consumer pattern. The consumer loop computes the sound level pressure during the measurement and stores the measured data in a TDMS file.
I am not expert with enqueue and dequeue function, so maybe it is bad programmed and I have some discontinuity in my data stream coming from the dequeue function.
    Thanks for your help,
    Mathieu

Based on your screenshot, it looks as though your code may be computing the weighted sound level for each channel in a single For Loop. The Weighting VIs and the Sound Level VIs maintain state, so it is not correct to use it in a For Loop to process multiple channels. Instead, wire the entire array of sound pressure channels to the input of the weighting and sound level VIs. The polymorphic VIs will adapt to the input type, and if the input data is continuous, the warning will not be returned.
Interestingly, you may be able to simplify your code if you specify the read order to group measurement types. Here is some code that I was looking at when evaluating performance for some different approaches to grouping waveforms. The Group by measurement type case was the fastest.

  • Sound Level

I have connected my Apple TV to seperate speakers. (Speakers from Bang & Olufson with buildt-in amplifiers, Beosound 4000). Im using my Iphone as remote control. Dont have TV connected, am only interested in sound.
But the output sound level from the Apple TV is way to high. Cant turn the volume down enough. It goes from OFF og loud, just with one step on the volume bar on the remote.
Is there a fix to this problem ?
And please, a fix that does not involve buying other speakers.

Are you connected via analogue cables or optical?
'one step' on which remote, the B&O remote?
I would not expect AppleTV to output on analogue at a higher level than any standard line level device - you're not connected to a high sensitivity input on the B&O such as a phono or mic input are you?
Far better to have the AppleTV output it's music at a standard level and to control the volume on teh B&O unit in my opinion.
AppleTV only recently had volume control for music using the white remote up/down arrows - seems to work ok but I had my reservations about it reducing sound quality in the past.

  • [SOLVED] Too average sound level [Thinkpad T60]

    Hi,
Since a week I've changed my computer to an old one, a Thinkpad T60 (2006). And ArchLinux works mostly fine except for the sound level. In each programs, even in alsamixer, I put everything to the maximum level (Master, PCM, sound level of the program etc) and it's still too close of an average level. My speakers on other device are two times stronger than on the T60. Even if I plug headphone the sound is still too close of the average power of my speaker.
Since it doesn't seems to be a configuration problem and if the speakers works great as usual, it seems to be a problem related to the T60. I've tried the mini jack on the laptop and the one on the dock, still the same result. I've also a Razer keyboard which have a mini speaker input too, same problem.
This is my sound card: Intel Corporation NM10/ICH7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)
I don't know what to do to solve this problem, if I can.
Thanks for your help and tell me if you miss an information.

Did you turn the hardware volume level up? (Using volume buttons, potentiometer, although lenovo does not mention that) I doubt that there are settings on volume level/gain in bios/uefi. As last resort, you can always add a softvol plugin to your alsa configuration.
Can you test volume levels with another operating system? Maybe even another live linux distribution like mint. Please post following:
    aplay -lL; lspci -nn | grep -i audio; amixer -c 0;

  • Sound levels

    Hi!
I have a movie of a group of singers at an event. The event sound levels were set up for speaking and there was a direct XLR feed into the camera. When all five of them are singing it's very distorted .... is there anyway to adjust this in iMovie? I've turned down the sound level, but of course this doesn't help much with the distortion.
    Thanks!
    JC

XLR feeds have - to my knowledge - a much higher signal then the average, consumer line-out…
most consumer cameras don't have a "from tape/behind tapehead" audio control; it doesn't play while recording what's on tape, but just the input. this way, you can NOT control the final result… for sure, the XLR signal was fine… but too much for your camera… next time, you need to make a short test-recording, rew, then play + listen.
in QTpro, you have access to the 4 (6?) audio tracks, which are included in a dv-stream… apple-j/audio/track selection allows to play around with seperate tracks, with a very little chance, you could lower the distorted tracks and "find" a less distorted one (as from mic)… but, as said, very little chance…
no "restauration" known to repair "over exposure" in audio, sorry :-/
as Mathew wrote: try to get another recording, many mixers tape for themselve a copy…

  • Ho do you change the default audio input volume level?

When an iChat audio or video chat begins the input audio level goes to a default setting of about 67% om my Macbook and about 77% on my iMac regardless of where the input level slider was set prior to beginning the iChat AV session.
On the MacBook the input level must be 100% or you will not be heard well on the other end. I have not been able to determine how to change the default input level settings for iChat.
Can someone either tell me how to change this preset level or point me to the file that the default level resides in. I am comfortable looking for both normal and hidden files but I have not been able to locate the correct file
    Thanks - Mike

Intel iMac 12" Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi Mike,
As you have found the Input volume in System Preferences > Sound > Input determines the output volume of iChat (or at least how well you are heard at the other end).
As you have also found this never stays where you put it.
Most people find it always returns to a point Too low for their liking. ( I have seen one post where it was always returning to 100%).
As to where this setting is actually set on a permanent basis I have not found with my playing about with my Macs
I have tried setting it is other apps (iMovie, GarageBand)
I have tried deleting the com.apple.AudioDevices.plist to see if this resets it.
If you find it can you let us know ?

  • SB X-Fi Titanium and SPDIF Optical input: no input sound

I'm attempting to use my SPDIF Optical input for the first time on my Windows 7 PC. Audio input works fine. No sound appears to be coming in through the optical input. Sound Properties in Control Panel shows everything is OK.
I am using a Converter box to convert a Coax optical output of my Boss GT-6 Guitar efx unit into a Toslink cable input. Everything is plugged in correctly. So assuming that the converter box and cable are doing their job, what subtle issue should I be looking for regarding input sound on the SB card? Everything looks OK, but still no sound.
I do get a low-level hum from my speakers when I turn on my GT-6 and it goes away when the GT-6 is powered off. At least something is being detected. I'm unclear how to proceed troubleshooting this
    Thanks for any assistance...Mark

I've been going through the same headaches with my extreme gamer. I wanted the quality of an optical connection and was impressed with the improved clarity and gain, but as frustrated that no 5. seemed possible on anything other then dvd's.
A extreme GAMER card should have GAME support one would think. Then I read about the Dolby Digital Li've Pack, avalible here at the web site, For a fee of course ^&%$&(.
It convert ALL sound from your card, even stereo if you use the CMSS-3D settings, to Dolby so any reciever can now decode them via an optical cable.
The only issue I'm having is that with Dolby Digital Li've enabled I'm getting a few millisecond delay that is slightly throwing off the lip syncing while playing video, I can't seem to find out why, with the DDL unticked the delay is gone, but so is the 5..
I'm not sure if it is because the DDL works in real-time and that causes the slight delay, or not. It isn't a huge problem just a annoying one.
It seems that Creative sucks at digital, lol. Or just doesn't care very much about it.

  • HT5517 How can I adjust sound level when streaming radio from my Apple TV through Airplay speakers?

I have a 2nd Gen Apple TV with an airport express set up as airplay speakers.  I can stream the new radio through using the Airplay speakers pretty well.  The problem is that once I've got it going, I cannot adjust the sound level without laboriously backing out of the radio menu, going back to the top level menu then drilling down into the Airplay settings to raise or lower the speaker's sound level.
Is there an easier way to do this?

go to system preferences > Sound > Output. then change the output from "built-in" to HDMI.

  • How do I get a descent sound level and quality when exporting out of Logic ??

    Hi guys,
I know this topic's been discussed many times before but I still can't fix my problem
I'm going crazy right now. It's been weeks I've been working on beats on Logic and I think they now sound pretty cool.
So I'm trying to export them out of Logic on mp3,or wav, or aiff but everytime it comes out very low. So when I'm applying different tips (limiter, adaptative limiter and different things I found on the internet... ) the sound level is a bit higher but still the quality is not as good as it is on Logic
So here's my questions : first, is it possible to get the exact same quality as the one you have when listening into logic ?
then how to get the best quality with a normal sound level  so when you listening to the mp3 or wave or aiff on itunes just after a normal song you don't have to turn the sound up
Thank you very much for you help !!

the playback level on dvd and most video streams is very low.(youtube seems ok)This is my second pavillion g7 w/ windows 7 .The first had a defective fan but the sound level was ok and there was a graphic eq section for sound control with other output options.I've yet to find that area on this pc in the month I,ve had it even though their identical computers.I,m at a loss for the cause of the problem.Headphones work fine but are annoying.

i use professional studio monitors to monitor the audio
the issue , is if i turn up the audio it will clip on premieres main output.  so i cant turn it up any more.
the specific moment i took the screenshot the audio volume was at -18db, but even if it was up at 0db it would not even reach half volume on my computers main output
this is the case regardless of the nature of the audio, be it stock music, dialogue, or sound effects  maybe there is a hidden master output that im unaware of
