Inquiring about RAM compatibility on first gen 12 inch aluminum powerbook

I've recently acquired a 12 inch first gen powerbook, and the only ram it has is the 128 onboard plus another 128 stick. Quite understandably, this *****... I've been looking for more ram, and I found this cheap:
HYNIX 1GB (2 X 512MB) PC2700 DDR 333MHz CL2.5 200Pin SODIMM Mac PowerBook G4 (and Similar) MEMORY
Part Number HYMD654M646B6-J AA PC2700S-25330 512MB DDR 333MHz CL2.5 Contents HYNIX 1GB (2 X 512MB) PC2700 DDR 333MHz CL2.5 200Pin SODIMM LAPTOP MEMORY
I can get this pretty cheap, so I'm hoping it works... Can anyone tell me if this should be compatible? (I'm aware that it's 512 more than I need, I'd hold onto the other stick. Also, I know if it works it'd underclock the RAM because its faster than it can handle... Also, can anyone else point me in the direction of a DIRT CHEAP 512 module that'd work in this computer? Any help would be greatly appreciated... (btw, this is my first apple device ever!!)

The original RAM manufacturers for Apple are: Samsung, Micron, and? Hynix.
The officially stated maximum capacity for your machine is 640MB, the soldered 128MB plus a 512MB upgrade. However, since that time, 1GB modules have been found to work, making it a maximum of (whatever the math is in GB).
Here are detailed specs from EveryMac.com:
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powerbookg4/stats/powerbook_g4_86712.html
You have to use PC2100 RAM though, not PC2700. Check the link provided within that link above, which directs you to Other World Computing, who sells "everything" Mac for your Mac. Other places to check are Crucial.com and Data Memory Systems (who seem to know Mac very well). There are other places too, but those are the recommended within the community.
I've used OWC and DataMem, but not Crucial.
Also, always use "name brand" RAM with these 12-inchers as they can be very finicky about RAM. Use Samsung, Micron (Crucial makes Micron RAM), or Hynix, as you chose.
P.S. I just learned yesterday night that PNY memory has the Hynix logo on it. Not sure if it's always been that way or if it's a recent thing... I recently acquired a 15-inch PowerBook aluminum G4 on eBay last week and was searching for RAM. I went against my own recommendation and went for the PNY memory because it was on sale this week at Best Buy--1GB modules of PC2700 RAM for $54.00 each--and I didn't have the money to buy the "real" RAM... considering I just bought the "new" machine! Cost me $120 for 2GB total and max out my "new" 15-inch G4. As opposed to almost $200+ if I bought Samsung RAM. When I upgraded the RAM on my 12-inch PowerBook, I made sure to get the Samsung RAM. Didn't want to take chances on my then new (open box unit at CompUSA) and under warranty PowerBook and have the memory mess up the system as it can sometimes do... and then void your warranty. Though your 867 MHz is way beyond any warranties.

I would like to inquire about how I could have my iPad 2 repaired or replaced. I bought it With a credit card via apple store website last June 19 of this year. At first, I already noticed a little white spot in the middle of the screen visible when the display on screen is dark. I thought this was okay. Now, My problem with it is that, it now has green discolorations at the center whenever the screen display is black or dark I.e. When a website's color is black or dark or whenever I go to the search interface.
    I am from the Philippines.
Please attend to this inquiry as promptly as possible. I'm sorry I have to send it here since I cannot see any email or inquiry page on the apple website. I also cannot reach the toll free number on my mobile phone.
    Thank you very much.

You will probably have to contact Apple for repair but before you do try this:
Turn your iPad upside down on your lap and give it a hard smack on the back.

  • Is the SSD in first gen thunderbolt macbook pro removable?

I have opted for SSD on my macbook pro (first gen thunderbolt, april 2011, i5, 4GB ram).
May I know if my SSD is soldered onto the motherboard like macbook airs or is it removable?
    Thank you!

I bought my newest MBP in March and installed the Crucial m4 512GB SSD in April. The only problem I've had is a firmware update that I didn't need, so I had to downgrade my firmware. I've seen a few tests on how long SSD should last - about the same as hard drives, but who knows? The technology for consumer products os rather new and they could last for anywhere between 3-10 years, I'm thinking. I've also seen a great price reduction since I bought mine and assume that, just with HDs, storage capacity will go up and prices will go down as production and consumer demand increase.
I still have a boat-load of external drives - but I love the speed of SSD.

  • Can not download any apps from app store with my first gen ipod touch

I am able to search for apps and maneuver around the app store, but i can't download anything. The button that says "FREE" or has the price of the app is unresponsive. There does not seem to be anything wrong with my screen since I'm able to use any apps I already have.
A google search turned up a couple of discussions from others that seem to indicate this is a recent issue.
I'm using a first gen ipod touch with the latest OS it can use.
Does anyone else have this problem?

For me the problem started on my IOS 3.1.3 Gen 1 iTouch sometime between my last purchase on 12/10 and a sync. So a sync didn't preceed it.   I discovered it when I tried to purchase an Audiobook. I can do podcasts, buy individual songs, but that's about it.  I can update apps so long as I do them all, although update has been like that for awhile. I can't buy apps (even free ones), audiobooks, or albums using the Touch directly.  I can't see many of the screen previews for apps and I can't review feedback on productcs either. I don't have any problems transfering purchases from my computer to my Touch using the iTunes app. I guess I eventually figured Apple might go here, but I sure haven't seen any announcement they were gong to do it now, so if it's intentional, it was sure done in an unfriednly way.  I'm a developer, so I understand having to move on, but my Gen 1 is no where near end of life, even if it can't run the latest IOS. I was an early adopter of the Touch, so I'm one of millions that helped IOS devices become popular.  I have newer IOS devices in the household under the same AppleID and another, and they work perfect.  But still use the Gen 1 daily. If this is the way going forward, I guess I'll have to buy on my computer or other devices and transfer to the Gen 1, but I'll sure miss being able to do it directly.  And I of course tried a factory reset and that didn't resolve it.  Given so many are having this issue, I'm pretty sure it's the older IOS or Gen 1 interacting with the Apple storefronts that's the issue. The question is, is it intentional by Apple, or Apple oversight with an update to the storefronts? If intential I can understand apps, but not sure about Music and Audiobooks other than possibly the older IOS is holding back new store features???

  • My wife and I each have an iPhone4 with separate Apple IDs. We are hopefully about to purchase the 4th gen iPad; can we use iCloud on the iPad with separate IDs on the iPhones?

My wife and I each have an iPhone4 with separate Apple IDs. We are hopefully about to purchase the 4th gen iPad; can we use iCloud on the iPad with separate IDs on the iPhones?
We would like to have all our music, photos, etc. on the iPad - is it best to create a new combined Apple ID for the iPad and simply upload our music, photos, etc. via our laptop instead? Does this not then render the iCloud useless to us?

And just in case you were wondering, installing one purchased copy on all the Macs you own is specifically called out as allowed in the Mac OS X Lion license.
If you do not want to download multiple times, just copy the Applications -> Install Lion app to a safe place BEFORE you do the first install.  Then copy that copy to any Mac you own where you want to install Lion.

  • IPad first gen 3g, battery died, wont start

I have been happily using my iPad first gen since i got it when the iPad 3g launched. Every night i would put it on the charger, but recently i went back vacation and didnt charge it for a week. When i got home my iPad was dead, so i placed it on the charger. It shows the charger connecting, the symbol on the face turns to the lightning bolt with a flashing red empty battery. After sitting like this for four hours, it still refuses to boot up. This is the exact same charger i have used for years, and i have tried pressing the home and lock button to force a restart (after about 6 seconds it just turns off). No idea whats wrong, hoping he isnt dead because i cannot afford a new one =(

Check that your cable is in good working order and that you are using the appropriate charger. The iPad required a 10W charger, not the 5W that comes with an iPhone. Most other third-party chargers not SPECIFICALLY stated to be for iPad will charge, but very slowly.
Also, you should;t let the battery drain completely before charging it. You can do that maybe once per month, but repeatedly doing this is not good for Li-ion batteries. Follow Apple's recommendations for battery care and you should be ok. https://www.apple.com/batteries/ipad.html

  • I'm about to buy my first MacBook Pro and I need a little help

    Hi everybody!
I'm about to buy my first MacBook pro and I have no experience on mac so I would be really thankfull if someone guides me to get an appropriate Notebook
Here are some imformations about what I want from a MacBook Pro:
    1) I have a limited budget so the price can not go anywhere upper than 2,000 dollars
    2) I'm a graphic designer working with photoshop, 3ds max and maya so I need strong CPU and VGA card
    3) 15 inches and high resolution
    4) Absolutly Lion OS
    5) weight doesn't matter!
    6) Ram doesn't matter cause I can upgrade it myself later when I got enogh money
    7) Hard capacity doesn't matter (I can upgrade it later too)
    8) It would be much better if it got HDMI port
    That's all
    Thanks for reading and answering

Except for #8, you're talking about the new entry-level MacBook Pro for $1,799.00 (see at http://store.apple.com/us/configure/MD103LL/A). It's a little less expensive at Amazon and you won't have to pay tax on it until you file next year instead of up-front.
It will do everything you need and, yes, you can upgrade it yourself when you get more cash. In fact, if you're willing to spend another $160 (still under your $2K limit) you can go ahead and upgrade the RAM to 16 GB. Later, spend $400 and put in a 512GB SSD.
Now to item #8. From monoprice, you can get a Thunderbolt-to-HDMI adapter for under $7 - click here.
You'll have exactly what you need for under $2K. Go for it...

  • I would like to inquire about thepurchase of docs to go, with my old credit card. but I cancelledit due to fraud transactions. how can I retrieve docs to go and transferred it to my new ipad? without charges.?

I would like to inquire about my purchse for docs to go last 2013, in my ipad 2, using my old credit card Citybank , I cancelled the card because of fraud transactions, How can I be able to transfer the docs to go to my new ipad 4 ? the messageis there is a billingproblem.
                              Please advise.

First of all, I suggest to remove the banned credit card from your account. If the banned credit card is still on the account, iTunes Store would sent a preauthorization request to the financial instute which would be declined as the credit card isn't active. To remove the credit card, please follow and choose "none":
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1918?viewlocale=en_US
If "none" is not an option, the latest order is unpaid - maybe due to the fraud transactions. In this case you have to contact iTunes Store Support to clarify the order. If it is fraud, they can forgive the order. If the order wasn't fraud, then you have to pay first (just choose a active payment method or redeem a gift card).
    iTunes Store Support contacts:

  • Where can high-power video cards be installed on a first-gen Mac Pro?

I have a first-gen Mac Pro with a Radeon X1900 XT in Slot-1 and a Geforce 7300 GT in Slot-4. The x1900 XT powers a 30" monitor and the 7300GT powers 2 x 20" monitors. The 7300GT card died and is being replaced with an 8800 GT.
Now it seems fairly obvious that for gaming the 8800 GT is superior to my X1900 XT. Ideally I'd like to just throw my new 8800 GT in Slot-1 and use it for my 30" monitor and then run the 2 20's off the X1900 XT in Slot-4. The problem with that is that the x1900 XT is a huge card and physically won't fit in Slot-4 because it runs in to the hard drives above it.
*Now, on to the questions / clarification:*
_Question 1_: Is the first-gen Mac Pro the same as the new Mac Pro in that high-power cards can only be used in Slot-1 and Slot-2? If so, why does it come in the standard configuration of:
    Slot-1: x16
    Slot-2: x1
    Slot-3: x1
    Slot-4: x8
It would seem that Apple purposely did this so you would run 2 high-power cards in Slot-1 and Slot-4 and keep them away from each other for heat reasons. The new Mac Pro has x16 bandwidth on Slot-1 and Slot-2 and it would make sense why they say to only install high-power cards in Slot-1 and Slot-2 for it.
_Question 2_: PCI-e configurations. There are a few ways I could tweak the configuration of the expansion slots to make this setup work. I'm curious as to which you would think is best:
*Option 1 (default PCI-e config, only works if a high-power card can be installed in slot 4):*
    Slot-1: x16 - Radeon X1900 XT - 2 x 20" monitors for minor tasks / programs
    Slot-2: x1
    Slot-3: x1
    Slot-4: x8 - GeForce 8800 GT - 30" monitor for major tasks / gaming
Now, the first issue is can the 8800 even run in Slot-4 due to the supposed power problem? If so, would there be a difference in performance for gaming at x8? I know this is backwards because you'd want the "primary" card to run on x16 but that's just not possible with this PCI-e configuration. If there is a difference in performance would an 8800 GT at x8 still run significantly faster in games than an X1900 XT a x16? I'd think so, but that's assuming the x8 isn't a real bottleneck.
*Option 2 (the only solution if the cards have to be installed in the first 2 slots):*
    Slot-1: x8 - GeForce 8800 GT - 30" monitor for major tasks / gaming
    Slot-2: x8 - Radeon X1900 XT - 2 x 20" monitors for minor tasks / programs
    Slot-3: x4
    Slot-4: x4
You still have the issue of the 8800 only running at x8 (if it even makes a difference, not sure). The benefit I see here is that instead of the X1900 XT dumping all of it's heat in to the 8800 GT (since heat rises) you have the 8800 GT on the bottom where it might run cooler. The X1900 XT would then also be limited to x8 but it's not even being used for gaming so it wouldn't matter at all. The X1900 XT is huge and would cover up Slot-3 but I don't use the other 2 slots so I don't mind.
*Option 3 (only works if Slot-3 can actually power an X1900 XT):*
    Slot-1: x16 - GeForce 8800 GT - 30" monitor for major tasks / gaming
    Slot-2: x1
    Slot-3: x4 - Radeon X1900 XT - 2 x 20" monitors for minor tasks / programs
    Slot-4: x4
This seems ideal only because this is the only setup that can get the 8800 to run at x16. The issue now is can Slot-3 run a high-power card? The card doesn't really NEED the power since it's just for running basic apps and not gaming. Again, the X1900 would cover up Slot-4 but it's not being used so no worries there.
*At the end of the day, the most important thing to figure out is:* where can high-power cards be installed in a first-gen mac pro? Once we know that we can figure out Question 2. The instructions that come with the 8800 GT say it can be installed in any of the 4 slots, but I don't know if I really believe that.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks for your help, I think we've beat this horse to death :P. I'm glad I got it all figured out though.
Now the only question is if the gaming performance of the 8800 is actually enough better than the X1900 to warrant making it my "primary" video card. As long as Adobe CS3 apps don't rely on core image like some of the Apple Pro apps do I think it will be fine. If they do I'd have to probably just stick with the X1900 since I use CS3 every single day and only play video games once a week if I'm lucky.
What are your thoughts on the X1900 vs the 8800 GT for CS3?
Edit: This just occurred to me... Since I'm going to have to run them as x8, x8, x4, x4 there isn't really going to be a "primary" card since neither will be at 16x. I guess I could technically just plug my 30" monitor in to either one of them depending on what I feel like doing. If I'm going to play a game I just plug in to the 8800 and if I'm working I plug in to the 1900. The computer is up on the desk so moving the monitor from one card to the other takes about 10 seconds. I could just plug 1 20" monitor in to each so there's always a free DVI port on either one.
It's not the most elegant but I guess it would be a good compromise if I wanted the "best" performance in either situation. I realize the Radeon 3870 is probably the best of both worlds but I really don't want the noise. I already modified my 1900 with this after 6 months of listening to the lawn mower that was the stock 1900 cooler: http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga2.php?idx=147
    I'm just hoping the 8800 isn't too loud .

  • Will my first gen macbook work with ipad 2's face time?

will my first gen macbook work with ipad 2's face time?

As an update, I bought the WNDR3400v2 router and am supremely disappointed with its lack of power - but - the Lenovo W510 DOES work perfectly fine connecting to both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz radios.
The problem is the signal strength only twenty feet away up one floor is dismal (as compared to what it was with the ancient Linksys WRT54G for example).
What bothers me is that Netgear goes to great lengths to hide the power output of the radio so I 'suspect' that it is anemic and I don't (yet anyway) suspect the radio on the W510 laptop. Netgear support would only tell me the EIRP at 2.4GHz is 20dBm, and at 5GHz it's double that. So I can only assume the power output from that. If I assume a 5dBi antenna gain for both frequencies, that results in a power output guesstimate of 15dBm (32mW) at 2.4GHz and double that at, i.e., 18dBm or 64mW, at 5GHz.
The other side of the equation, of course, is the power & gain of the W510 radio & antenna.
Do we have specs for the W510 power output & antenna gain (e.g., a typical laptop is about 50mW (roughly 15 to 18 dBm)  pushed into an antenna with a gain of about 1/2 dBi to about 1 dBi at best, regardless of what the specification sheet intimates)?

I have a first gen iPad, and it will randomly go home from the Internet when I don't press any button.  I have a wireless connection at home.  Is this a known bug?  What can I do?

You maybe running low on memory since you are using the original iPad with iOS 5.1.1 and the iPad is crashing. This may help and it certainly won't hurt.
Quit all apps completely and reboot the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the recents tray will appear with all of your recent apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
Do this before you launch Safari again. Go to Settings>Safari>Clear Cookies and Data. You don't have to clear the history.

  • First gen iPad having problems after iOS5 update

I have recently upgraded my first gen iPad to iOS5 (and subsequent update) and have had nothing but issues, sometimes to the point of making my iPad unusable with apps that take ten seconds to update (talking about even apple apps so it is not a third party issue), the system freezing up and not responding for well over ten seconds (example of this is while typing), and Safari crashing almost at least once an hour. I have rebooted the system numerous times and these issues have continued. I used to expect problems like this from Windows system, now it looks like I can expect the same from my Apple products as well.
Anyone else having issues like this?

Same problems here. Also browser issues, Safari (the worst), Atomic and Opera. Have tried every cache clearing and reset suggestion I can find. IOS 5 has been a royal pain. 5.01 didn't help anything here.

  • What command can be run from the cmd to inquire about the language layout that is used right now?

I have windows 7 32bit platform. Is there any command that can be run from the command line just to inquire about the language bar that is currently in use? Suppose I have English keyboard on my machine but I am switching between 3 languages when I write
my documents (e.g. English, German, Spanish). I want to know if there is any way to tell what language layout that is in current use as seen in the language bar. This question is not about how to change language layout from the command line -- just to know
what layout. For example, the command can return some sort of string to indicate which layout is currently in use: "english", "german", "spanish", and so on.
My ultimate goal from this question is to pass this output into an external editor that will hopefully change font based on the input language? Any help to achieve this goal will be much appreciated.
Or put differently, what is the best way to tell an external editor like Emacs about the current language layout that is in current use?

For the current input language you can try using
    reg query "HKCU\Keyboard Layout\Preload" /v 1
The return value includes an eight digit hex value. The first four digits indicate either default layout for the language (all zeros) or a variation (non-zero). The last four digits are the locale id - see:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/goglobal/bb964664.aspx
From this table, you can see in the example above my input language is English - Australia.
For the keyboard layout you could try
    WMIC Path Win32_Keyboard Get Layout
0409 is an English - US keyboard.
For a few other ideas/methods try reading
