INS-32008 Oracle base vs user home

Hi,
Installing 11g R2 on Red Hat
(uname -a
Linux daniel3.wycliffe.org 2.6.32-279.9.1.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP Fri Aug 31 09:04:24 EDT 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux)
Under 10.2, (and 10.1 and 9.2 etc...) we made the oracle account's home directory to be /u01/app/oracle, which is also our standard Oracle Base.
But the 11.2 installer doesn't seem to like this. We get:
[INS-32008] Oracle base location cant be same as the user home home directory. Are you sure you want to continue?
This message can "apparently" be ignored and we have successfully installed several no frills 11.2 databases. But why this warning? What is the potential issue here that is troubling the installer? I really want us to be doing things as standard as possible.
Thanks for any help here.
Steve

Hi,
OFA means Oracle Flexible Architecture and this is recommended oracle directory architecture for Oracle installation and storing files. After years of eperiences of customers of Oracle, Oracle corporation comes up with new recommendations to make product better and better.
In 11.g it is even not recommended to store oracle inventory under oracle base directory. So oracle inventory should be /u01/app/oraInventory and base directory should be /u01/app/oracle/
When you violate OFA, you receive a warning, but, still it will allow you to install anything any where on the file system.
Followig document may clear some of your doubts.

If your organization does not have a standardized nomenclature, then oracle has recommendations.

    Windows 7 Enterprise
I have read portions of the Installation manual, and yes, I am aware of the issues with DHCP but that's how we do things here, so I'm not going to change that setting. From reading through the installation instructions, I see that the 11gR1 installation program asked for much more information, i.e., many more decisions than the 11gR2 installation program. I do not know if this is because of some choice up front that then excludes other options. Thanks.

Following are the last few lines of the log file. Can anyone please help me to fix this problem?<snip>
the error has nothing to do with DBCA. DBCA was simply the last in a long string of victims.
Go back and read the instructions where you downloaded the install media. They state that the TWO zip files you download must be unzipped into the same directory.

  • Oracle Base vs. Software Location

    Hi,
Is it OK to use different drive locations for Oracle Base and Oracle Software Location?
For example, if I make the Oracle Base point to E:\diag, and the Software Location point to C:\oracle\product\11.2.0\dbhome_1, would that cause any issues?
When I try this, I get the following message:
[INS-32018] The selected Oracle Home is outside of Oracle Base. Are you sure you want to continue?
Is there a reason I shouldn't do it this way?
    thanks much,
    Nora

  • Oracle Base in wrong place

    hello,
As part of an upgrade to 11.2.02, I installed the binaries into a new home etc, and then upgraded the database. All appears to be working fine, BUT I made an error with the location of the Oracle Base during the install. Is it possible for me to move this, (and if so would some kind soul point me at the relevant documentation) or will i have to uninstall/re-install the binaries ?
    Many thanks,
    A

    hi
I've never heard about moving oracle homes/bases.
Why bother with it if it works?
Rather you can install 11.2.0.2 in another good location and them move database (e.g. with expdp/impdp or RMAN).
I think you cannot easly reinstall to the old 11.2.0.1 home , only with downgrade option which by the way can make problems.

  • SQL Developer Error Creating User Home

SQL Developer was running fine on my Windows 7 64-bit machine until Monday morning. Now when I kick it off (from my Desktop shortcut), I get a small box saying: "Error creating user home in directory C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\SQL Developer".
There is no error number, and I have been unable to find this error in the SQL Developer documentation. What does it mean? It's possible that updates were pushed to my machine over the weekend (unknown -- network sysadmins are elsewhere), but I would have thought I would have gotten a different message if there were compatibility problems. Have I accidentally deleted a necessary file from my local SQL Developer folder? My connection databases are Oracle 11g.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Hi,
Here is a thread on the same issue, but so old that the advice it gives is no longer accurate:
Re: Error creating user home in directory D:\Program Files\raptor\jdev.
So let's assume you no longer have write access to your own Windows user directory. To workaround that just add the following to one of the conf files in the SQL Developer installation folder. For example, to run SQL Developer from a flash drive, I modified my E:\sqldeveloper\ide\jdk.conf to include
AddVMOption -Dide.user.dir=../../.sqldeveloperSo that the user home is E:\.sqldeveloper

I installed the Jdeveloper with patch p8751878 to work on 11.5.10.2.  This is on a win7 64bit machine.
My environment and system variables have the following:
    Variable= JDEV_USER_HOME
    value=C:\p8751878_11i_GENERIC\jdevhome\jdev
When I try to launch the Jdeveloper getting the following message:
Eror creating user home in directory C:\p8751878_11i_GENERIC\jdevhome\jdev.  Please restart JDeveloper with a new user home specified.
    Error stack shows the following
    java.io.IOException: Error copying file C:\p8751878_11i_GENERIC\jdevhome\jdev\system9.0.3.5.1453\Classic.kdf
    at oracle.ide.MultiCopier.copyDirectory(Ide.java:3356)
Any suggestions as to what could be causing this (pls. excuse if this has been asked before..)?
    Thanks,
    Monkey

Does anyone know how Raptor determines where it will create it's user home???
On our development network I keep getting the noted error message, regardless of Windows 2003, 2000, or XP. So Im starting to think we may have some Windows policy that is preventing the creation of the .raptor folder that Raptor creates when it first starts up.
On my laptop, which is not tied into the development network, I dont have this problem.

  • Can not log on as Sysadmin in Oracle E-Business Suite Home page (11.5.9) Li

I have successfully installed 11.5.9 in SUSE SLES8.
Here all what I have done after a successful installation of 11.5.9
    in Linux (SUSE SLES8) –
As per the installation note to download the jinitiator file I have to signon
to Oracle Applications E_business Suite Home page. In the Home page I have to specify useid and password. By mistake I have specified wrong useid/password probably for a number of times. Then I get the message you are no longer in the URL session.
Later on I logged on to "CRM HomePAGE" as user SYSADMIN and change the password. All work fine in "CRM HomePAGE" window.
But after that when I try to logon to “E_business Suite Home page” as SYSADMIN, (specifying new password)I am receiving following error –
“You have encountered an unexpected error. Please contact the System
    Administrator for assistance.
However when I click “here” I get no details or explanation about the error.
Please let me know how to unset the sigon option for user SYSADMIN under “E_business Suite Home page”, so that I can successfully log on to it (as sysadmin) and configure jinitiator.
Thanks in advance for your help and co-operations.
    Regards, Kunal

    Kunal,
You can use FNDCPASS utility to change the application users password.
    Thanks

  • Changing Oracle Base of OUI with Command line?

    Hi all,
I'm trying install the latest version of the Oracle ODAC (11.2.0.1.2) on a Win-7 32bit machine. I have a batch file that works perfectly with XP SP3 that allowed me to use "set ORACLE_BASE=C:\oracle" in cmd and the directory would be reflected in the OUI, but this is not the case when I try the same thing on Win7. No matter what I try, the default oracle base is C:\app\<user>. Any help on this matter is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

this is not the case when I try the same thing on Win7which edition of Windows 7?

  • Should oracle base directory be installed on share drive?

I am installing oracle 11g on a windows cluster and I want to know if I should point the oracle base to the share drive or the C drive?
    Thanks

To minimize downtime during future upgrades, Oracle recommends that you use a separate Oracle home for each major component (for example, a separate Oracle home each for the database, application software, and Oracle Fail Safe).
Make sure you have exact same oracle home name and location in order to ensure a proper failover.
Other thing you need to consider is whenever you make any change in tnsnames.ora,sqlnet.ora,listener.ora or PWD file, you will need to replicate those changes to other node's oracle home as well.
I hope this answered your question.

  • Unique Oracle Base directory-reusing fails

    Hi,
I'm in a process of installation of GC 10.2 on RH4.
After failed installation I ininstalled all products with OUI and deleted all directories; cleaned oratab file.
At the point of specifying Oracle Home there is a message:
"Please specify a Unique Oracle Base directory" - ? - does not allow for reuse of the previous (non-existing ) directories)
What is the file where the previous installation info is recorded?
    Thx,

    Check the OUI inventory.

In oracle rac, If user query a select query and in processing data is fetched but in the duration of fetching the particular node is evicted then how failover to another node internally?

The query is re-issued as a flashback query and the client process can continue to fetch from the cursor. This is described in the Net Services Administrators Guide, the section on Transparent Application Failover.

  • When logging on to Windows 7 user gets a second mapped drive to the users home folder

    Morning,
I'm working through an issue we've discovered whilst trialing Windows 7.  Our environment is setup as follows.
Domain Controllers are Windows Server 2003
Clients are Windows XP and Windows 7
Windows XP and Windows 7 Clients are in seperate OU's
All Windows XP Group Policies apply to Windows XP And Windows 7 clients, Windows 7 policies are then applied to Windows 7 clients after
Windows 7 policies are setup such that any setting defined in a Windows XP Group policy is left unconfigured in the Windows 7 Group policy and only new Windows 7 settings have been set in Windows 7 Group Policies.
We have users home folders mapped in their Account Directory account setting and set to H:\   to connect to
    \\domainname\dfs\home\username
In addition we also as a fail safe map the drive via a login script using net use
This has worked fine for years in windows XP, if Active Directory failed to map the drive for any reason then the login script would then map the home drive.
In Windows 7 we have noticed a curious error.  We found after a period of a couple of weeks we suddenly started getting a new drive mapped.  This was identical to the H:\ drive mapping but was instead under drive Z:\.  In other words, the
users home folder is mapped twice on h:\ and z:\.  This is not affecting any of the Windows XP users.
I have gone through several logic reasons to ascertain why this has happened with the following findings.
    1. Originally we thought the error appeared when we tried out mapping the home drive using the mapped drives functionality new in Windows 7 group policy under preferences > windows settings > drive maps.  However, after forcing it to delete the
Z:\ drive using this functionality we only succeeded in removing it with a group policy present to do it.  As soon as we removed that group policy the Z:\ drive came back
    2. Secondly i thought the reason we would be getting a z:\ drive when we haven't specified it anywhere is because active directory is trying to map to the H:\ Drive but it is already present therefore in Windows 7 it tries to map to a different drive.
Using Windows logic it tries the highest letter first which is unlikely to be in use i.e. z:\.  This makes sense because our logon script uses a net use h:\ command to map the drive and i believe by default these are set to perisistent.  Therefore
the next time the user logs on H:\ is already mapped so the logic in Active Directory accounts maps the drive to Z:\ instead hence we end up with two mapped home drives.  To test this i altered the login script to set the drive maps to
non persistent using persistent:no.  The logic here was that when the user logged off the drive would become unmapped so that when Active Directory tried to map the drive it would be able to use H:\.  Unfortunately this was not the case and
    Z:\ remains.
    3. Here is where i resolve the issue but i don't know why and is the bit i need answering.  If i go into my account on Active Directory and go to Profile and set the home folder drive letter to another letter i.e. change from H:\ to U:\,
i get prompted to set full control etc and apply.  I then set the drive back from U:\ to H:\, again i am prompted for setting full control which i accept.
NOW when i login i no longer receive a Z:\ drive and only get an H:\ drive.  YAY, thats what i want, however, i do not understand why this is the case.  At first i thought it might be something in the active directory logic when i login to an XP
machine and then login to a windows 7 machine.  IF you bear in mind that although i get a new profile in Windows 7 i still retain the same home folder setting.  However, after logging on an XP machine logging off then logging
on a Windows 7 machine i still didn't get the Z:\ drive back.
I have tried creating a new user that ONLY receives our Windows 7 Group Policies and still they receive both an H:\ and a Z:\ drive which rules out the Windows XP policies conflicting with the Windows 7 policies.
Does anyone have any ideas why i would get a second drive mapped to Z:\ logging into Windows 7 on a Windows Server 2003 domain?
Can anyone explain in more detail exactly how the Active Directory functionality works when you specify a connect to Drive letter for a users home folder?
My current workaround is simply to add a net use command to remove the Z:\ drive.  I do not want to use Mapped Network drives using the new policy settings in Windows 7 RSAT because we have already found issues with it.

We had the exact same issue happen to us. No issue on Windows XP but Windows 7 mapped two home drives (F and Z). F was mapped during the login script and Z was being mapped by some unknown reason.
We use Netapp for our storage and home drives and use a feature called CIFS Home Drive Mapping. This essentially maps a user to a folder not available through normal CIFS methods causing AD to error when setting the home drive. To get around this we use
dsquery and dsmod to modify this attribute in the user account. This is the command we used...
dsquery user -name %UserNameX% | dsmod user -hmdrv F -hmdir \\filer\$username$
Notice there is no ":" after the F
We determined the root causewas the value for the
homeDrive attributefor the user account was set to "F" instead of "F:"
When we updated our users to reference "F:" instead of "F" in their user, this problem was resolved.
Use LDP or some other method to verify that the homeDrive attribute is set to "F:" (or any other letter) or you will have this issue.
