Insanely slow rendering times, almost 60x longer | After Effects CS6

I'm using Adobe After Effects CS6 and have been messing around with some intro making. This being said, the clips that I have in AE are 5-10 seconds long.
My composition includes 2 lights, a camera, 3d text, a shockwave, a background (w/Magic Bullet Looks effect) and a song. All together, it is 5 seconds long. I render it out using AVI w/sound and it says it will take nearly 3 1/2 hours. I talked to a friend who is much better at intro making then me and includes many more layers and his renders take 3-15 minutes. It's an insane difference! I must be doing something wrong but I don't understand what it is.
System Specs:
Intel i5-3570
EVGA GTX 770 4gb
8gb Ram
Western Digital 1TB (582 GB Free, this is where the file is being saved to.)
Samsung Evo PRO 128gb SSD (This is where AE is located.)
Windows 7
Thanks for any help, it's very much appreciated.

Before you go through all those resources just to goose the render speed, here's something you can do right away: turn off multiprocessing (render multiple frames simultaneously) and turn off any hardware acceleration.  With just 4 lousy gigs of memory, you can't use multiprocessing, and AE uses very little hardware acceleration.
Then get yourself some more RAM: think about at least 16 gigs.
And THEN look at those resources, or you'll really get lost in AE.

  • SLOW rendering times

    Hi!
    One of my biggest gripes is the slow rendering times with FCP. I know that it's some setting that I have wrong, but I can't figure it out for the life of me. I started with HD video captures using the ProRes 422 codec, but it would take a REALLY LONG time for it to render.
    For simplistic sake, I started again with just a simple video I took of a screencast. The video is saved using Quicktime in 636x480, HD.264, and a SD (6-1-6) color profile. There is also no sound to the movie...just video. I figured that this would be a really simple way to try some things out, but I was wrong.
    I setup FCP as a number of different codecs and resolutions. I imported the file by just dragging and dropping the .mov video into the Browser in FCP. I then dragged and dropped it to the timeline, and did a render/all.
    Even by doing this, it is taking 8 minutes to render a 2 minute video. There must be something I'm doing wrong, and I can't figure it out. I was watching a youtube FCP demo and this guy rendered a video in about a minute on a g5. Being I have a dual-core intel, I can't imagine it taking as long as it is. I appreciate any help and I know there's a million threads out there...but I just can't seem to grasp this.
    Thanks!

    Hi! I suppose the information below would be helpful. I'd like to get started with a screen capture from Snapz Pro X. Here are some answers to the questions...
    Program: Snapz Pro X Screen Capture v2.2.2
    Record Settings Used:
    - Compression Type: H.264
    - 30 Frames Per Second
    - Key frame every 500 frames
    - Encoding Mode: Single-pass
    - Compressor Quality: Best
    FCP Version: 7.0.2
    Within FCP, this is where I get confused because of all the options.
    In the "Easy Video Setup" portion, I have...
    Format: Apple ProRes 422
    Use: Custom
    - Sequence Preset: DV NTSC 48khz
    - Capture Preset: DV NTSC 48kHz
    - Device Control Preset: Non-Controllable Device
    - Playback Output Video: Digital Cinema Desktop Preview - Main
    - Playback Output Audio: Default
    - Edit to Tape/PTV Output Video: Same as playback
    - Edit to Tape/PTV Output Audio: Same as Playback
    In the "Audio/Video" Settings, I have the following...
    Sequence Preset: DV NTSC 48khz
    Capture Preset: DV NTSC 48khz
    Device Control PReset: Non-controllable device
    Video Playback: Digital cinema desktop preview - main
    Audio Playback: Default
    Sequence Presets: Default settings for DV NTSC 48kHz
    Capture PReset: Default settings for DV NTSC 48kHz
    Device Control: Non-controllable device
    a/v devices: digital cinema desktop preview - main
    - mirror on desktop checked
    - audio: default
    - 'do not show external av device warning' is checked.
    Now, if I right click on the project in the "Browser" window and choose "Sequence Settings", I have the following...
    Frame Size: 640x480 NTSC 4:3
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: NTSC - CCIR 601/DV 720x480
    Field Dominance: None
    Editing Timebase: 29.97
    Quick Time Compressor: H.264
    Quality: 100%
    Audio Rate: 48khz
    Audio Depth: 16 bit
    Audio Config: Channel Grouped
    Video Processing: All grayed out except 'normal' is selected for motion filtering quality.
    ================
    Now, this is where I get really confused with FCP. Everybody says to set it up with the same settings you use to record. Does the "Easy Video Setup" work hand-in-hand with the "Audio/Video Settings"? Should you skip the easy setup and just jump into the A/V Settings?
    WHile typing this message, I also noticed that the "Sequence Presets" in the Audio/Video Settings are set to 720x480 using millions of colors. In the settings for the file in the "Browser" Window, I have it set to 640x480, which is different than what's in the av settings. Should these be the same?
    I'm just getting started with FCP, and these are just the questions I have. What is the 'workflow' one takes to do this? Start FCP, setup the 'audio/video settings' area, choose the preset, edit the sequence preset to something basic, and then drag and drop your mov files in? I suppose it's just confusing because you can set the video settings in FCP, in the 'easy setup', if you right click on the project and choose settings, etc... Which one has precedence over the entire project?
    Sorry for so many questions.
    Thanks in advance...

  • After Effects CS6 - Very slow workflow

    Hi everyone, my first writing in adobe forums. I've contacted 3 adobe support agents, but I didn't get much help from them. Recently I switched from PC to Mac Pro, having Adobe Production Premium 5.5 for Windows and now upgraded to Adobe Production Premium 6.
    First I tried a trial of After Effects CC and I was surprised how slow it is. Now I'm using AE CS6 full version and it's a bit better, but still pretty dang slow. (The video I made for adobe support explaining the problem is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jsZZpH0vYU )
    To try to cut long story short. In the video adove, I've created couple of text layers and couple of shape layers. Made them 3D. Added a camera too. When I move the camera, everything is refreshing extremly slow. It's like you're having 100 3D layers and very busy scene,
    and actually it's few most simplest 3D layers. The agents from adobe support told me to switch to half rez, or draft mode etc. But the problem is, I do not want to work in half rey, draft mode or something similar, with my configuration it should work pretty normal. Never
    had these kind of problems in AE CS5.5. I tried everything, updated the software, updated my Mac OS, disabled global cache, even disabled multiprocessing etc. Btw, rendering is okay.
    Is this the way CS6 is made? Is it supposed to be slow? Because, literally I got an answer from the agent that AECS6 is designed like that, in other words, to be slow
    I really have no idea anymore how to make this work. I would like to get back to my lovely 5.5, but I only have license for Windows. If you guys could help me, I would really appriciate that.
    I use:
    * Mac Pro
    * 2 x 2,4 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
    * 64 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    * ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024MB
    * 2TB HDD
    * 2 x Apple LED Cinema Display 27"
    * After Effects CS6 - 11.0.2.11
    * Mac OS X 10.8.4
    * I haven't had this problems ever before (using ae for quite some time)
    * At the moment no 3rd party plugins installed
    Thanks!
    Mirza

    You'll have to get used to creating Ram Previews and using AE's interface in the right way. You should really go through the getting started materials on the home page and take a look at the FAQ. AE is a layer based pixel calculating beast that will do a lot more to a movie at 60 frames per second than Photoshop will do on to a still image. After Effects is essentially Photoshop for movies with a lot more options.
    If you want to smoothly drag through the timeline and playback multiple cuts with simple transitions and two or three layers then use Premiere Pro. If you need to use 20 layers and 60 effects to create a stunning composite or motion graphics effect then you're stuck with rendering at just about any price point.

  • Adobe After Effects CS6 takes FOREVER to lock existing frames before rendering

    My After Effects CS6 locks up for 3 minutes "Locking Existing Frames" before it even begins to start rendering, every time I need to preview anything - even at the lowest possible quality.
    The render goes perfectly normal - it is not the rendering that is the problem - it is the "Locking Existing Frames" process BEFORE rendering that freezes up my computer for 3 minutes, and ruining my life.
    I am using Adobe After Effects CS6 on a Mac Book Pro with a 2.9 GHz Core i7 processor (2 cores) and 8 GB of RAM.
    Please help me understand what is happening when it is "Locking Existing Frames," and what some solutions could be to reduce the amount of time it takes to do this.
    ALSO: I have scoured the Web for hours looking for the answer to this problem, and to this point it has never been solved.  If you can solve this issue, Adobe should give you a promotion and $1 million.

    Hi Rick and Greg,
    Thanks for the quick responses.  Below are all the details to all your questions.  Also - just to emphasize again - my rendering goes super awesomely fast.  It is not the rendering.  It is the "Locking Existing Frames" process before the rendering that is ruining my life.
    FREE MEMORY:
    This is brand new Mac Book Pro with hardly anything stored on it.
    The 8 GB of RAM is split into 2 memory slots, each with 4GB of RAM
    3RD-PARTY CODECS:
    I am not aware of any third-party codecs in this system.  I imported some fonts (ITC Franklin Gothic) and some video files (see below), but I am not aware of any third-party codec installed on this system.
    DISC CACHE:
    My Disc Cache is enabled
    My maximum disc cache size is 69 GB
    I do not have a seperate "fast hard drive" or "SSD" seperate from my main hard drive, where I store my footage.
    MPEG SOURCE FILES:
    If by source files, you're asking about the video files I imported:
    2 MP4s (5 sec. each)
    3 QuickTime .mov (3 sec. each)
    1 Audio-only FLV. (2 minute background music throughout video; used to be a Premiere working file)
    MULTIPROCESSING
    Turned off, but still locks up forever before rendering.
    ADDITIONAL FUN FACTS:
    Here are some additional observations that might help:
    It doesn't just take a long time to start rendering; it freezes my entire computer for the duration of the "Locking Existing Frames" process - putting my entire life on hold for 3 minutes, every time I need to preview a minor detail... It's a nightmare.
    The video is 1 min. 45 sec. long so far, and has 15 sec. to go.
    The video is comprised of 99 percent motion graphics, and 1 percent actual footage (Occupy Wall Street hates my footage)
    The complexity in this video is that there are a lot of compositions inside of compositions inside of compositions, but even when I go to the very beginning of the first comp - where the only animation is a line being drawn with the "Stroke" effect - it still takes 3 minutes to "Lock Existing Frames."
    Again... The rendering goes super fast after the "Locking Existing Frames" process.  The problem is NOT with the rendering.  The problem is the "Locking Existing Frames" process BEFORE the rendering starts.
    This is my job and I can't do efficiently until I solve this problem, so I will be very responsive until we can identify the issue.
    Thanks again for all your helpful responses!

    The composition I'm working with does have 1 camera, and about 45 small 3D comps built into it. No lights. And all of the footage and data is on the Mac OSX hard drive. Which has tons of space available as you can see. I've played around with the settings in After Effects. But nothing seems to significantly speed things up. Any ideas??

    Hey PJ,
    I've been using CS6 since it was released, and while it's got a bunch of great new features, it's basically made Multi Processing unusable unless we're talking about the simplest of comps.   I'm working on my second short using AE as the total animation package, and render times for complicated 3D comps (NOT using ray tracing) have tripled.   MP used to take forever to spool up, but was fast once it got rolling.  Now, disabling MP gives me 3 or 4 times faster rendering, which is still MUCH slower than MP is CS5.5.  SOmething has deflineitly changed for the worse, as i'm using the same machine with the same settings and virtually the same comps.
    I acutally just yesterday had two animators quit on my because they couldn't meet their deadlines.
    I think After Effects is the hydra of programs.  They kill one feature and two more fill its place.  Unfortuanly we traded functional Multi-processing for falloff lighting and etc...  The puppet tool was it 3 version of after effects before it was stable.  I'm hoping we don't have to wait til CS7 for MP to sort itself out.
    I really don't understand the "deal with it" aspect of the posters here.  Surely a functional program that delivers on it's promises is the goal of this forum.  We're not asking it to make us a sandwich.

  • After Effects CS6 rendering takes forever

    I am currently working on After Effects CS6 and I'm wondering why it takes a long time for me to render a composition. I am not sure if the problem is with the mac that i am using or with the settings i have on AE. When I render the composition of 21 seconds video with 1080p 29.97fps it takes 5 hours and eralier i triend rendering again and it takes 7 hours. is this normal? Please help me.
    I am using Mac with this spe
    Processor  2 x 2.4 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory  12 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 ECC
    Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
    Here's the screenshot of my render queue
    HOPE YOU CAN HELP ME AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! THANKS!

    Your screenshot has been scaled so much that we can not really see any details about the comp, only some general information about the render cue, but that looks like a lot of 3D layers, some lighting, and some movement. As Mynenium said, this may be completely normal. Many of my more complex projects take four or five minutes per frame to render. It all depends on the assets.
    A suggestion for speeding things up is to make all of your artwork  no bigger than it will appear in the final comp. If the images in this comp are the same size as the comp and they are never bigger than 1/8 of the comp window then you're wasting a lot of time scaling them down.
    This project could also be done with Particular or other particle system. Same goes there, make sure that the artwork is not bigger than it needs to be.

  • I am having trouble rendering a video in After Effects CS6

    I am having trouble rendering a video in After Effects CS6. My video is only 12 seconds long. I am using the "Ray-Trace" feature". Whenever I try to render this video I get this error message.
    Also, the text turns into a giant black boxy blob whenever I turn off the Ray-Trace effect.
    Somebody please help

    That's a question for the Adobe forums.

  • Preview-picture making fix in After Effects CS6 before rendering

    Hello guys,I use tutorials for learning after effects cs6...I can't find how I can rendering a preview-picture which will be showed in the ready movieclip. Do we have a possibility for making a special picture/ICON in CS6 before rendering? Greetings from Torsten

    Hello Andrew, sorry about my english :-)
    Yes I'm trying to define a special thumbnail image of a rendered clip from my timeline - I can't believe it, that AE CS6 this not can??? In a little clip with 15 sec it will rendered any picture in the middle of the timeline...I can't believe it !!! THE GREAT PROGRAMM AE CS6... :-(

  • Horrible final video quality in After Effects CS6 when rendering a 1920x1080 video with H.264 format

    I've been using After Effects CS6 on my Macbook Pro for over a year now with no issues. However, today when I exported a video to be rendered in 1920x1080p with H.264 format, I got the worst quality final video I've ever seen. I filmed my video files in 1920x1080p (like usual), and I clicked all the same buttons I normally do to export a video, but every HQ video I try to export looks horrible. I haven't clicked any crazy buttons or anything out of the ordinary.
    I always export a video following this sequence:
    File > Export > Add to Render Queue > Lossless > H.264 (quality format) > video output (make sure it's checked) > audio output (make sure it's checked) > OK > Output to Desktop
    My render settings are always set as "best settings" including "full" resolution and "best" quality.
    Now, when I click H.264, a "settings mismatch" pops up and says:
    "Warning: Output file will be resized from 1920x1080 (1.00 PAR) to 320x1080 (6.00 PAR) to meet format constraints"
    The rendering quality and playback quality within After Effects is great, but once the video is exported, it is horrible.
    PLEASE HELP?! I have deadlines I need to meet!

    Use the H.264 encoding presets in Adobe Media Encoder.
    The H.264 export features in After Effects have been removed in later versions because of numerous problems.

    thx for reply!

    Hi!
    I don't think you can get the points via scripting as they're not individual parameters. They must be stored in the plugin as "custom data", which is opaque...
    What do you need them for? Cos', for example, you could convert the points you need to Nulls (or Solids) and get the position data from there...
    Cheers,

  • HELP! After Effects CS6 "Background Color" Rendering Problem!

    Of all my years of using Adobe After Effects, I have never encountered this problem before. First of all, this is what it looks like when I'm normally editing in my composition.
    Click the image to view in a higher resolution.
    When I add this composition to the render que, with all my settings ready, I hit render.
    But while it's rendering, I just get a red screen.
    In case you're wondering, these are my basic rendering settings.
    These are my output module settings.
    And these are my composition settings.

    Your problem is that the program wants a good video card and a fast hard drive and lots of memory and you have none of the above. If you upgraded the RAM to 8 gigs and installed a solid state hard drive you might make the program useable but the real bottleneck  is going to be the Intel HD graphics, which cannot be upgraded.
    You do have an open slot to add one 4 gig memory module. This is an easy relatively inexpensive upgrade. See here:

    I would try this a step at a time. Next would be the solid state drive. That would cost maybe $150. Post back if you need more help.
