Insert blank DVD, no dialogue box appears

When I insert a blank CD or DVD the drive spins up but no dialogue box appears. Changing the answers in the CD & DVD window in prefernces has no effect. No matter which option is choosen, no dialogue box appears. No disk image appears. This is only a problem with the finder. iDVD recognizes and burns DVDs. The same DVD's work fine in another iMac running OS X 10.6.8 so the disk are ok.
I am using a 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5 with 8 GB of RAM. 21.5 inch iMac running OS X 10.9.2.

Hey AeroCat, I'll be honest, I'm not quite sure what you're looking for. When you say dialogue box, are you looking for something to actually open and launch on your screen, or are you missing a way to browse to it? You say that it's only a problem in Finder, does that mean that you're not getting an option on your sidebar?
Given the limited info I have, I would do the following if it was an issue with the disk not appearing in Finder/on the desktop:
Restart the system
Open Finder, click preferences, if you want an icon to appear on your desktop, under the general tab, make sure "CDs, DVDs, and iPods" is checked. Now, click on the "Sidebar" tab. Under the "Devices" section, make sure that "CDs, DVDs, and iPods" has a check mark.
If it's not launching something:
It's possible the disk you're using doesn't have an autorun. Most data disks won't auto-launch anything but instead, work like a flashdrive.

It can or usually does matter if the account and SMTP server is provided by your ISP used for connecting to the internet or by an email account provider not associated with your ISP.

When i click on print menu in certain page, the pop page loaded then the print dialogue box appeared and immediately it close down all the pop up and print dialogue box without us to print it. What is the solution?

On that website (member only site), when i clicked on print menu on the site, it normally loaded the page and then the print dialogue box appear and immediately, it closed down all the pop up and print dialuge so that i cannot print it at all. Probably caused by an incompatible extension.

Is it possible to control/save where a dialogue box appears on screen?

I'm using a Mac, OS 10.9, Acrobat 10.1.8, dual monitors (laptop screen and an external monitor)
I have to do a lot of scanning to PDF and then separating and creating carefully named files. So I open the doc, select the pages, export them out and do a Save As - is there a way to position and lock this Save As dialogue box?
It always appears in the center of the screen - which happens to be where the document has the info that I need to name this new file. So I have to move the Save As box and then type the file name. I want to skip needing to use the mouse and moving this.
Seemed like on the PC when I was doing this same thing, I could "train" the dialogue box to appear on the opposite screen. Or it would appear in the same place that I'd closed it before (off to the side somewhere).
Opposite screen, stuck to the top of the same screen - some place other than where it's appearing right now. Anyone know if this is an option? Either within Acrobat or within the OS itself?

Yes, it is easily possible. I have personally used Matrix Orbital serial LCD displays and QSI serial LCD displays. QSI also offers touch screen modules (I experimented with one very briefly). For information on a QSI Display with touchpad, see the following link:

"Characters" empty dialogue box appears intermittently

Last week I upgraded to Leopard 10.5.1 but all of a sudden (yesterday), a rectangular shaped box with the words "Characters" in the title bar appears anytime (regardless of the application I'm working in) I simply click anywhere on the screen. Worth mentioning is that this rectangular "dialogue" (I'm not sure if that's what its called) box appears for 2 seconds and then disappears until the next time I click. Finally, I think this whole mess may have started when I selected "Characters" from one of the menus in "Stickies." By the way, the only thing appearing inside this box when it pops up is one of those spinning things that indicates when something is being processed (looks like hands on a clock). Please help! I can't stand having this thing pop up in my face every 5 seconds!

I am having the same problem. Similar to you, the problem started when I selected "Special Characters" under Edit in itunes. A "Characters" box pops up every 5-10 seconds in the same position on the screen and then spontaneously disappears. I agree this very annoying. I've tried restarting the computer with no success. I have not seen any correlation with the Leopard 10.5.1 upgrade and this problem. I upgrade Leopard quite some time ago and problem started today.

Not Allowed to Insert Blank DVD+R

When I attempt to insert a blank DVD+R I get the error message "This operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient access privileges."
1) I am the administrator on this computer (and the only user). This is a new problem.
2) In "System Preferences/CD/DVDs" I have set "Open Finder" as my preference for how to handle blank CDs/DVDs.
3) In "System Profiler" I see the DVD media shown correctly, but there is no disc icon on the desktop. (Discs with content do show correctly.)

Good info Bill, see if this cures it...
First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...

I believe I'm using the latest Firefox. I download it whenever you tell me it's available. I have Windows Vista. DVD player hangs when I insert blank DVD

When I insert a DVD into my Mac Pro, the DVD recorder/player stops working!! I have to reboot my machine and it starts working OK. This is happening more and more often. Any Idea why and how to solve the problem?

I have a 2 month old iMac and yesterday it stopped accepting DVD/CDs. Don't know if that's what you meant by "hangs". If I restart my computer, the DVD/CD will work and I can insert/eject normally. I have a trouble call into Apple. They're supposed to call me in a couple hours. I'll let you know what happens.

Flashing dialogue box appears after startup

Hi,
I have a Macbook Pro 2.3GHz i5 4GB and I've noticed recently after startup that a quick dialogue box flashes on screen but I am unable to read or determine if there is something wrong. All that I am able to see is a yellow triangle but am unable to read the text. Can anyone please help explain how I can fix this issue?

Error message "disk is locked" when inserting blank DVD

My G4 is supposed to be able to burn a DVD, but when I insert the sample DVD that came with the computer when it was new, I keep getting the "disk is locked" message. It also happens with other DVD's that I bought specifically to use with the G4. I would appreciate your suggestions.

Any optical drive software that is worth its salt should enable burning of data discs (4.7GB or 8.5GB in the case of DVDs) as well as of specialized file formats. That said, however, one of the commonest reasons for failure to burn, even failure to recognize an optical drive, is extension conflict. This was especially true of Roxio's Toast v5.x, when using which it was necessary to disable all Apple extensions, USB and FireWire, so that control of the drive could be taken by Toast extensions. I had to do this only recently to get a friend's LaCie DVD-R burner to be recognized as a DVD (rather than CD) burner by a B&W under OS 9.2.2, let alone to burn DVDs. That possibility was the reason for asking about your software. However, if you are using only Apple software, there should be no issue of software conflicts of this nature.
Without wishing or intending to fob you off, I suggest that you will get much more up-to-the-moment guidance from active fellow-sufferers than is likely in this antediluvian category if you approach them in the iDVD specialist forums, which are divided into iDVD 6, 5, and 4 and under.

If so, what OS did you start from, and which one are you one now?
Which version of Safari are you on now?
Or has your URL bar at the top disappeared altogether?

I cannot open add ons without an unresponsive script dialogue box appearing which stops the browser running.

I tried to open Add ons from the Tools tab on the main menu. I end up with a script error which appears repeatedly no matter whether I "continue" or "stop script" button.
When I click error console I end up with numerous lines of errors and warnings.
Should I uninstall and re-install to fix this problem?

Thanks for the response. The response you provided appears to only indicate what the cause is. It doesn't help me fix it.
I ended up having to uninstall it, except I had to remove all my personal details stuff too, because having tried to re-install with my preferences on the system just continued the problem. It was a bummer because I lost all my bookmarks.
In fact I'm noticing Mozilla is becoming dysfunctional on all my computers and it's annoying when it crashes as only task manager can close it down. All these problems appeared out of no where in the last few weeks.
Anyway I've had enough. I'm too busy to try and make sense of all the stuff on the help pages. I'm uninstalling for good this time.
