Insert character with umlaut/accent

How do you insert a character with an accent or umlaut into Appleworks 6? This may seem like a basic question, but I can't find it in any of the drop-down menus or the 'help' section. I particularly need German characters, such as 'ö' and 'ß' (both of which I copy/pasted there, but don't want to have to do that every time!). I am used to using OpenOffice or Microsoft Word.

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Inserting umlaut/accented characters is fairly straightforward; it requires an [Opt]+[key] (=press [Opt] and hit [key] while holding [Opt]), which then either produces a character of its own or modifies the immediately following key.
Some examples of such non-english characters:
- [Opt]+[s] = ß, [Opt]+[d]=ð, [Shift][Opt][k] = , etc.
Some examples of accenting:
- [Opt]+[`] followed by [key] tries to put a down-stroke accent on [key]
Ex.: [Opt]+[`][a] = à,
- [Opt]+[n] [key] tries to put a tilde on the letter [key]
Ex.: [Opt]-[n][o] = õ,
- [Opt]+[e][key] triesd to put an up-stroke accent on [key]
Ex.: [Opt]+[e][e] = é
But, instead of me trying to give you a complete listing, see if you have a little "Stars-and-stripes" icon in the right portion of your menu bar. (If not, select "System Preferences..." from the "" menu item on the far left; in its window, click on the "International" icon, and then on the "Input Menu" tab; check the "Keyboard Viewer" if it isn't already checked; close the "System Preferences" window.)
Select the "Show Keyboard Viewer" from the "Stars-and-Stripes" menu in the right portion of your menu bar, and you'll get a "live" guide to your keyboard. As you press modifier keys, the keys in the viewer change to their correspondingly modified (extended) function. So, pressing [Opt] highlights a couple of keys: these are extended modifier keys: [Opt] makes [e] into the highlighted [’] key, indicating that it attempts to put the [’]-like accent on the following letter.
Only those combinations work that exist in the font you are using; For example [Opt]+[e][s] produces "´s" since there is no [’]-accented [s] in most fonts.
This system has been with the Macintosh OS's since their inception---certainly as long as I remember it.
If you have checked, "Hungarian" in the "International/Input Menu" system preference, and then selected that in the "Stars-and-Stripes" menu as your mode of entry, the flag changes into the Hungarian flag, and your keys will produce symbols according to the Hungarian layout, regardless of what the imprint on the actual keys says. The Keyboard Viewer, of course, tells you which key does what now. Since you ask about "ß" ([Opt]+[s]) and "ö" ([Opt]+[ u] [o]), which occur in German, you may want to switch to the German keyboard layout. Of course, some keys will no longer do what their imprint says, but the "Keyboard Viewer" can always remind you of their "German" function.
Alas! The more recent, and far more capable method using UNICODE (accessible by checking the "U.S. Extended" = "Stars-and-Stripes" with a little "U" option in the "International/Input Menu" system preferences, and then selecting the "U.S. Extended" mode of input from the "Stars-and-Stripes" menu) is not supported by AppleWorks 6.2.9: it crashes if you type anything into any of the AppleWorks' modules. And, since Apple is now developing "iWork" and "iLife", AppleWorks will probably never accept UNICODE.
Hope this helps, Tristan

• Inserting a special character with GREP styles

Hi.
I wanna define a GREP style that makes this: if I write Bluetooth I wanna that a registered trademark is added at the end of the word but with superscript format. Is it possible?
Thanks in advance.

No, GREP styles only apply formatting, they cannot insert characters. Use a regular find & change to do so.
(There is a thinking-outside-of-the-box solution. If you have access to a font creating utility, you can create a character 'h' with TM attached to it. Then you can use a GREP style to automatically apply this custom font to just the 'h' of 'Bluetooth'. See http://indesignsecrets.com/insert-a-special-character-with-grep-styles.php.)

Firefox does not display the e with acute accent character correctly from a javascript alert box when my browser language settings are fr_ca or fr_fr. However, it does it correctly when my browser language setting is fr. How do i get it to display e with acute accent and other iso8859 characters correctly in a javascript alert box when my browser language settings are fr_fr and fr_ca?

Every time Firefox opened

Use Unicode (UTF-8) for those characters.
Then you will always be sure that they are displayed correctly.

• Loading a CSV file with Umlaut characters (àáä)

Hai,
We are uploading a CSV file though a Custom JSP page built based on Oracle JTF framework.
The JSP page is loading the data into FND_LOBS table using JTF object, oracle.apps.jtf.amv.ServletUploader.
The CSV file in the FND_LOBS table stored properly with the umlaut characters.
Now the JSP page invokes a Java object to read and parse the data. We are selecting the data first into BLOB object and then using the Input Stream Reader to get the data.
Here is the sample code:
oraclepreparedstatement = (OraclePreparedStatement)oracleconnection.prepareStatement(" SELECT FILE_DATA FROM FND_LOBS WHERE FILE_ID = :1 ");
oraclepreparedstatement.defineColumnType(1, 2004);
oraclepreparedstatement.setLong(1, <file id>);
oracleresultset = (OracleResultSet)oraclepreparedstatement.executeQuery();
blob = (BLOB)oracleresultset.getObject(1);
InputStreamReader inputstreamreader = new InputStreamReader(blob.getBinaryStream());
lineReader = new LineNumberReader(inputstreamreader )
lCSVLine = lineReader.readLine();
I tried printing the character set used by the InputStreamReader and it returned as ASCII
Now I tried setting the different character sets to read Umlaut characters(german chars) but nothing has worked.
InputStreamReader inputstreamreader = new InputStreamReader(blob.getBinaryStream(),"UTF-8");
Can someone please let me know where and how to set the Character Set to accept the Umlaut characters like àáä?
Thanks,
Anji

Thank you for the quick response.
Requirement:
I need to retrive the BLOB object with umlaut characters from database, parse the data with comma delimeter into strings and store in database.
I am viewing the umlaut data from the database table using TOAD utility tool.
I tried the same code example provided above but it is not working as expected. The umlaut characters are translated to 'ýýý.
CODE EXAMPLE:
Input:
test_umlaut (sno NUMBER, col1 VARCHAR2(100), col3 BLOB);
insert into test_umlaut(sno,col3) values(200, utl_raw.cast_to_raw('äöüÄÖÜ' ))
Note: Verified that the database is showing the umlaut characters on selecting the col3 and storing in a flat file
--- code
OraclePreparedStatement oraclepreparedstatement10 = null;
OracleResultSet rs = null;
oraclepreparedstatement10 = (OraclePreparedStatement)oracleconnection.prepareStatement(" SELECT col3 FROM test_umlaut WHERE sno = 200 ");
oraclepreparedstatement10.defineColumnType(1, 2004);
rs = (OracleResultSet)oraclepreparedstatement10.executeQuery();
while(rs.next()) {
BLOB b = (BLOB)rs.getObject(1);
InputStream is = b.getBinaryStream();
InputStreamReader r = new InputStreamReader(is,"utf8");
BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(r);
String line;
while( (line = br.readLine()) != null) {
System.out.println(line);
OraclePreparedStatement oraclepreparedstatement12 = null;
OracleResultSet oracleresultset12 = null;
oraclepreparedstatement12 = (OraclePreparedStatement)oracleconnection.prepareStatement(" INSERT INTO test_umlaut(sno,col1) VALUES (300,?) ");
oraclepreparedstatement12.setString(1,line);
oraclepreparedstatement12.executeUpdate();
br.close();
r.close();
is.close();
Output: Verified the output from the database table which is inserted in the loop above.
select col1 from test_umlaut where sno=300

• XML_SQL with umlaut

Support the XML_SQL Api umlaut in XML Files??
d, |, _, v ??

While inserting i get a
oracle.xml.sql.OracleXMLSQLException and further a
NumberFormatException. Which parameter do I have to set to avoid
these Exceptions. I can insert the file in my local db but I get
the Exception on the server db. The value I want to insert for
expample is 30,1. Maybe the JDBC-Driver tries to convert the String ;30,1+ to an
Integer-Object. This will cause the described Exception since
the Integer-Class requires ;.+ instead of ;,+ for decimal point.
I have another problem generating an xmlfile when there
are "Umlaute" in the data. E.g. V and \. Exchanging these to Oe
and Ue than it works fine.Use ISO-8859-1 character set to work with umlauts, e.g.:
<?xml version = '1.0' encoding = 'ISO-8859-1'?>
.. but you can use the default UTF-8 encoding too, umlauts will
be replaced by equivalents as ;CŸ+

• Problem loading Image data with French accent in file name

We have a very complex commercial application that has been working perfectly in English for over a year. We have now localized it to French and Spanish, and discovered a serious show-stopping problem. We need help fast, with the scheduled release being less than 2 weeks away...!
We iterate over a folder to find all the images in it, then display those in a user window. The code for loading the images is:
for each (var name:String in filenames){
var image:SmoothImageTransformable = new SmoothImageTransformable();
var imagePath:String = dir + "/" + name;
image.source = imagePath;
trace("Adding Item to picture carousel with url " + image.source);
image.data = {directory:dir, filename:name};
image.isDragEnabled = true;
image.setStyle("horizontalCenter", 0);
image.setStyle("verticalCenter", 0);
_images.push(image);
Our SmoothImageTransformable class is an internal class that inherits from Image. This all works fine for image names like 'myFavoritePhoto', 'test', 'photo346', etc. However, it fails to load the data if the file name is something like 'caméra' Any name with a UTF-8 character causes the data load to fail.
To be sure we weren't doing a load somewhere else in the code that I had overlooked, I added a "image.autoLoad = false' line in there. That did exactly as expected -- all image squares then show a grey blank, with no image shown. Removing that line (reverting to the original code, as shown above) causes all the images to work perfectly, except for those with French accent characters like the é.
HELP! Is this a known bug? Is there some additional setting I need to make it understand the extended character set? I can't find any mention about this at all in the documentation.

@markerline:
We have a fix! Almost... I don't understand one aspect of what I am seeing though.
We have one test file named "camèra.jpg" that is an example of what I am unable to load into an Image. I decided to examine the character codes at each letter, and this is what Flex has as the string:
name = cam?ra.jpg
[0] = c; 0x99
[1] = a; 0x97
[2] = m; 0x109
[3] = ?; 0x232
[4] = r; 0x114
[5] = a; 0x97
[6] = .; 0x46
[7] = j; 0x106
[8] = p; 0x112
[9] = g; 0x103
Note that the è prints as gibberish in the trace statement, and shows a numeric encoding of 0x232. According to
http://docstore.mik.ua/orelly/web2/action/appb_01.htm
The unicode equivalent of Latin1 for è is 0xE8, which is equivalent to 0x232. That implies that the string is already Latin1, which I would think would mean that Windoze would recognize the file name and open it properly -- but it does not.
I then tried taking the "camèra.jpg" string, pasting it into NotePad++ in a UTF8 document, then telling NotePad++ to display as ASCII. The result is "camèra". I then tried just forcing the file name within Flex to this new mangled string. The result then is:
MAGIC name = camèra
[0] = c; 0x99
[1] = a; 0x97
[2] = m; 0x109
[3] = ?; 0x195
[4] = ?; 0x168
[5] = r; 0x114
[6] = a; 0x97
[7] = .; 0x46
[8] = j; 0x106
[9] = p; 0x112
[10] = g; 0x103
Note this time the trace statement looks proper. More important, the IMAGE DOES LOAD! (Our display of the name to the user now looks like crap, but that just means I need to modify our class to have a separate 'name' property, rather than extracting it from the 'image.source')
So... my remaining question -- what encoding did I just do through that NotePad++ incantation? That site I quoted above said that it was already Latin1, which is what I thought I was trying to get to. I clearly need to write a method to map from incoming (UTF8 I thought, but maybe Latin1?) to Windows file system (Latin1 I thought, but maybe ASCII).
In other words, I am not sure what charcter set to come from or go to... It turns out the code was already in the character set I had been trying to go to (which is why it wasn't working) and the set I seem to need to go to is not the one I thought...

• File Adapter - File Name with umlaut

Hi,
does anyone know if XI is able to process files
which names contain an umlaut e.g. "täst.xml" or "töst.xml"?
In our scenario the file adpater always polls on the specified directory but files with an umlaut in their name
are not processed. In the communication channel we specified the filename with a wildcard (*.xml).
In the adapter monitor the files are shown as processed even though no messages are shown for example in sxmb_moni.
As further information: Files without an umlaut in their name are processed correctly.
Thanks for any help.

• I have Adobe Photoshop 10 installed on my MacBook Pro but cannot get it to type an O with Umlauts as it does on the keyboard outside Photoshop

I have Adbobe Photoshop 10 on my MacBook pro but when using it cannot get an O with Umlauts, which are easily done outside Adobe. I feel sure that it must be possible, but nothing I have tried has succeeded. Can anyone help?

How are you trying to get the Ö? By holding down the O key or by pressing Option-U to get the umlauts and then press the O?
I have a later version of Photoshop and am able to type Ö using the "Option-U + O" method, but not using the "hold down O" method. My guess is this has to do with the type engine inside Photoshop. Adobe apps tend to use a different type engine because it is capable of things the OS type engine cannot do.

Please reply me ASAP.
Edited by: ram pranav on Feb 18, 2009 10:28 PM

Hi Ram,
IN case of "UPDATE_INSERT", you can use the KEY tag in your structure. Also you can provide LIKE as an attribute to the KEY element as follows :
<key1>
<col4 compareOperation=u201DLIKEu201D>val%</col4>
</key1>
But when you are trying to insert the data_, the <key> tags will be ignored and only <access> will be considered._
action=UPDATE_INSERT
The statement has the same format as for the UPDATE action. Initially, the same action is executed as for UPDATE. If no update to the database table can be made for this action (the condition does not apply to any table entry), values of the table described in the <access> element are inserted in accordance with the description of the action INSERT. <key> elements are ignored in this case.
The response document has the following format; one of the two values is always 0 because either an UPDATE or an INSERT action is always executed:
Go through the link I have provided earlier.
