Insert custom video "transitions" in iDVD???

Hi,
In some commerical DVDs moving between menus or selecting the movie or extra features will show a brief movie clip or animation before the video plays.
Is there any way to do that with iDVD '09?
Just as I'm typing this I'm thinking that the "transition" added to the start of the video in iMovie, but I'd like a way to do it in iDVD just in case I want to change the transition or decide it doesn't work, rather than needing to re-export the video from iMovie for a second time.
Any ideas?

Hi there,
Some of the newer iDVD themes come with built-in transitions between menus. You can not create custom transitions in iDVD. Commercial DVDs are made with professional encoding software such as DVD Studio Pro.

Issue with Video Transitions

While insert various video transitions last night I kept finding that, on certain transitions, a cross dissolve or fad in/fade out transition would only be be 0.1 second in duration (while all other transitions could be inserted and adjusted without problem). When I tried to amend the length of the transition (by clicking on the transition itself and then trying to amend by stretching it or manually typing in a new duration length) nothing seemed to work and it stubbornly stayed at 0.1 second.
What am I doing wrong?

you do the beginner's mistake #1, we all did.. me too:
you have to let 'flesh' at the clips you add to the timeline, by setting in/out points.
illu:
#1 shows the actual 'cut' in timeline
#2 shows, that there's some more material from clip#1 'under' clips #2..
because: we set an out-point (#3) a few secs before the raw-material ends (#4)
when you add clips to timeline in full length, there isn't any material for a dissolve.
totally different, if you use iMovie (=consumer/beginner tool): it 'grabs' the needed frames&secs from both clips, in result the project gets shorter ( ! ) .. now, try to edit to music with such a concept..
set in-/out-points in preview - and you can add any dissolve..

Video transition default

Every now and then, I will insert a video transition like cross fade or fade out and it will automatically default to an extremely short transition (usually 00:00:00;15). I will try to change it manually but it will not allow me. I try to change transition type and it still does it. This happens in virtually every movie I do but it happens randomly (as far as I can tell) about 10% of the time. Otherwise all transitions default to 00:00:01;00.
Any suggestions gratefully appreciated.

It is happening because you don't have enough handles on the one of the video clips where you are adding the transition. If you are adding a 30 framer centered on the cut you need 15 frames of "unseen" video, or handles, on the incoming or outgoing of the clip to give the transition something to work with. Try to slip the clips a bit to get those handles and it'll work.

Can't change default video transition duration in PRE7 project

I couldn't find the solution for the following problem. In one of my Premiere Elements 7 projects, suddenly the video transition default duration changed from 30 frames to 3 frames. After inserting this 3 frames long transition, I can adjust it (expanding or shrinking) in the timeline, change the duration via the "Edit Transition" dialog box, however there is no way I can change the default duration. I can change the duration value in the Edit > Preferences > General dialog box but it has no effect on the actual duration. This is true for all transitions. On the other hand, the other projects (I checked a few), also a new project work properly: In them, the default duration is 30 frames, and I can set it in the Properties dialog box to any other value. So, this problem appears to be project specific. I hope somebody can help me, so I do not have to redo this particular project. Thanks in advance, Laci.

Steve, This is the same camcorder I have been using the last five years. Other projects from footages taken the same time are working fine. Also, I just created a 'new' (test) project from the same clips (many clips, about 25 minutes, several bmp pictures in it) - and it also works fine! It must be some very peculiar feature of that particular project, and I do not think it is worth to spend more time with it. I just thought that it might have happened with somebody else and there is a known solution. I consider this issue closed, thanks for the help. Laci. (PS: I also have an insignificant problem: I uploaded my picture to my preferences page here a couple of months ago, set it to be displayed but it does not appear. Who could help with this? Thanks.)

Mac-compatible plug-in for feathered-wipe video transitions?

Does anyone know of a Mac-compatible alternative for SpiceMaster for creating feathered wipe video transitions? I've just been handed off a job (let's just say the company who started it is "no longer in the picture") and all they used feathered wipe via the SpiceMaster plug-in about 100-150 times (in a 15 minute video — sigh). Anyways, I can't change the visual direction of the project, I just have to clean up the mess. We're Mac-only and the SpiceMaster plug-in isn't available on the Mac.
While one option is to use a liner wipe Video Effect (which allows for the feather), because of the amount of transitions in this job, that's not only a major pain in the arse in itself, but having to move clips in alternating tracks and overlap the footage, etc. becomes a huge headache when they decide to change the edit (as, all of a sudden, the alternating of the clips to different tracks goes all out of wack).
Anyway, I'm hoping someone could suggest a Video Transition plug-in that would allow me to do feathered wipes. It'd mean the difference between a quick replacing of the SpiceMaster transition with whatever plug-in I could use vs. a nightmare of a project using the linear wipe Video Effect.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated!!!

Thanks for the reply. I've tried using the gradient wipe, but was unsuccessful in attaining the desired effect. Here's a quick screencap to show what I'm seeing:
The problem is, this results in a very narrow wipe. I mean, it's no longer a fine line between image1 and image2, there is some feather, but I really need to feather it out. The gradient I created is the same dimensions as the sequence I'm working in, and is a gradient from 100% black on the left side to pure white on the right, with a nice gradient in between. But, when I use this, it's almost like the source gradient is squished in (on the width) resulting in a very narrow feathered wipe.
Below is an example of the rendered video as it was when using SpiceMaster to create the feathered wipe. The first image is the image directly before the wipe starts, the second image the image directly after the end of the wipe, and the third image is a capture mid-wipe. As you can see, there is a very wide feather during the transition as opposed to what is seen in the screen capture above.
Am I doing something wrong when creating my custom gradient? It seems like, since my source file is a nice, wide gradient, it should result in a wide feather, but for some reason it seems to squish down into a narrow feather?
Any suggestions?

Dropped frame warning after adding 3d video transition between 2 clips....

I have the MBP in signature and after making a very short sequence with 2 small clips (obtained by the same master clip, from/on my SSD, that is 640x480 / 10fps with AppleOPEN DML codec) between which I insert a 3D video transition (cross zoom), if I press the space bar for preview (with unlimited RT setting + dynamic setting for playback and frame quality) I get the dropped frame warning as soon as the playhead reaches the 3D transition in the playtime....Is this normal even with my very new MBP specs???
Note that I am currently on battery and not on charger (--> the GT330M is gently underclocked).
May you please advise?

Hey there,
First of all, FCE doesn't support your media. You should really use something like the free [MPEG Streamclip|http://www.squared5.com> to convert it to DV-NTSC with a frame size of 720x480, a frame rate of 29.97, and audio set to Uncompressed Stereo 48kHz. Edit the media in a DV-NTSC sequence within FCE.
After applying almost any effect you'll need to render it out to view it in real time. The shortcut is Option-R.

1minute video distortion with iDVD-anybody encounter this?

I encountered a strange issue with a movie that I recently created in iDVD. Src was 1080i HD, downconverted to 720p and imported to iMHD, and then used within iDVD.
At about 53 minutes in the video (total ~1hr 40 min DVD encoded using Prof setting), there is a strange video distortion created - difficult to describe, but looks like say a 100x100 pixel movie upscaled to 720x480 with big blotches of color all over.
Src video imported to iDVD looks impeccable, and even if I recreated the DVD with diff src media at the 52minute mark, the distortion still shows up exactly for 1 minute around the 53 min (or 52.5 or 53.5 or 54 min) mark.
Really bugs me, as iDVD otherwise seems to do an OK job with the downconversion of the HD src file.
Anybody seen this odd behavior with iDVD? BTW, I burn to disc image, and both the image as well as the DVD show identical distortion at the same spot.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try trashing the iDVD pref file and re-do the disc image. I've already had to trash the iMovie pref file several times due to another bug there - I seem to have hit some max limit on # of cutaways+PIP inserts and it doesn't allow me to add another cutaway/PIP -- but that will have to be a different thread!
The file formats are the same throughout the movie - mixed HDV 1080i + AVCHD 1080i - and they are both downconverted to 720p using the native HD output format from iM09. All orig source and the 720p files look great without any artifacts. However, only the 1 min section as mentioned before has these really ugly blotchy artifacts when output from iDVD to 480i.
Unfortunately, I got the same artifacts/distortion at about the same point in the movie even if I tried a different iDVD theme (same movie length) or tried the output to Vid-TS folders...:-( This seems to point to a bug in the internal conversion to VOB...
I'll try your suggestion next - to trash iDVD pref and re-do the disc image again.

Problem with a video transition

I'm new to FCE and just starting to make titles. I made a simple title in Title 3D, saved the clip back to the Browser, and did an Insert Edit to the beginning of the sequence. I then tried to drag a video transition onto the edit point. It took the transition without the "Insufficient content for edit" warning, which I understand having learned about handles. The first video clip is very short, so I want the transition to be entirely within the title clip. What I wind up with is a one frame transition. I double clicked the transition to open it in the Viewer. Trying to increase the duration of the dissolve to 1 sec. doesn't work. It reverts back to 1 frame. I tried moving the Out point back 30 frames but this only shortened the clip by that amount. What am I doing wrong?

The Out point of the incoming clip doesn't matter, it's the In point of the clip that matters. If you understand about handles you understand that you need additional media outside and in front of the marked In point of the incoming shot to make the transition. For a one second transition you need at least 15 frames.

Im trying to create custom transistions to a video project im working on .. I want to use a custom image that i created and am having problems making it work like a video transition that is installed with FC .. Im not sure if i have to use XML files or if its as easy as just putting the transistion in my video, which i tried, and the results were not good ..

The templates used by your new theme in apex(that you created when you copied) would still be referencing your old css path.
So update check the templates used in your new theme for the referred css files

Change the string in the CSS file path from theme_2 to theme_10 , assuming that it is in the same directory as the other themes. Else modify it appropriately.

Cube Spin Video transition behavior

Hi,
I see that the cube spin video transition behaves in an odd way. I was wondering if there was a way to alter it.
Here is the behavior:
(example created for clarity)
Clip A (the 1st clip) is nothing but frames (30fps) of a big letter A.
Clip B (the 2nd clip) is nothing but frames (30fps) of a big letter B.
When a cube spin video transition is inserted between them:
As the cube begins to spin to the right you see the letter A on the face that is leaving you as you would expect.
As you begin to see the coming side, it oddly also has the letter A that then changes to the letter B.
Sometimes the leaving A side also changes to the letter B, but not always.
Is it possible to get a behavior where the leaving side is always A and the coming side is always B?
I have the transition centered on +0.
Frame blend and hold do not seem to affect this.

You are correct.
Enough footage needs to be left before your in-point and after your out-point that looks like you want.
Then the transitions work fine.

Problem with sound, and problem with video transitions

For some reason my audio isnt locked with my video anymore so when I move a clip the audio doesnt follow does anyone know how to fix that?
Also, when I put in video transitions instead of just switching from the first clip to the second clip it flashes an image from other pieces of footage while transitioning and I need to figure out how to fix that too.
Anyone know how to fix these?

Thanks i got the audio problem fixed.
When I open up final cut it says some of the media has been disconnected but it then says I can't reconnect it or something like that, I don't know if that effects the transitions. I split up a lot of footage and rearranged it and for one of the places where it flashes a clip it shows one of the pieces of footage that I had deleted because it had a glitch and the other places I noticed it it had random clips from throughout the project, like a flash of an interview that happens way later in the film. So it is random clips that are in the film and even clips that I deleted.

I'm having a problem in FCP7 with all video transitions. Every transition has a rolling flicker throughout the effect. What is causing this?

I recently upgraded to FCP7 from FCP6. I am now having an issue in playback with all video transitions. When I add a transition to my video it does not consistently play smoothly. I now appears to have an old "film" like flicker rolling through the effect. Our video was shot on a dslr and brought into FCP with compressor as a prores 422 file. We use magic bullet for our coloring effects which are in place on this video. When I was working on the project in FCP6 I did not have this problem. When the project was complete we upgraded to FCP7. The client has now come back to us wanting additional footage. So I opened the old project up into FCP7 and checked yes to all format updates to meet with FCP7 guidelines. So far this is the only problem I've encountered. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For me it looks like conflict with field order (upper, lower - interlaced).
Please, check Your sequence settings, maybe it should be set to "field order NONE" if Your source is progressive.
Next thing You could check:
in Your timeline with bad transitions look into "Effecs tab" - maybe FCP 7 added "shift field filter +/-1" after opening FCP 6 project.
In general - try to keep sequence settings same as source settings.

Can I use a DRM-Protected Music video in my IDVD project.

Can I download a DRM protected music video to a IDVD project and burn a DVD. The music video is not showing up in the media window in IDVD. Only ITunes Plus songs and videos, make it to the media window. I can't drag the video directly off ITunes. They say, I can burn a up to seven copy's of the DMR protected video/music, but how.. Thanks for any help.

Didn't work, Window came up saying "Could not be converted because protected files cannot be converted to other formats. I was able to burn it to a DVD, it came up as a MPEG 4 file. Then I first went to the ITunes tool bar Preference>Advanced>importing>importing using>Aiff Encoder. Then tool bar again File> import. Music video imported another copy to ITunes library. Right mouse clicked second copy> convert selection to Aiff. Then "Could not convert" window came up.

Missing video transitions in Premiere CS6

Greeting everyone,
It seems that I am missing some 3D motion transition effects in Premiere CS6. I only have Cube Spin and Flip Over, but I know (and have seen) more transitions on other people's installations. I can't seem to find anywhere to download them either. I assumed they came with base CS6, but I don't have them. Where can I download some more? Or how do I restore the ones that I should have?
