Insert or delete single cells

How do I insert or delete a single cell?
For example, I want two columns of text. aligned horizontally, and, separated by a blank column.
The two text lists have been created in other applications.
So I copy list1, and paste it in cell C7.
Then I copy list2, and paste it cell G6.
oops. Now the lists are not aligned horizontally.
The easiest way to align the lists is by either delete a single cell in column C or insert a single cell in column G.
But I can't find the option to add/delete single cells.
Does that option exist in Numbers? If so, how/where?

My first thought on reading your post was: why are you using a single table for two side-by-side lists? If you had used two single-column tables you could use Delete Row or Insert Row to do what you want.
pw and John both gave you perfectly good solutions, and I just wanted to add my two cents worth. I don't see much value in the Add/Delete Cell feature that you are looking for. The action never ends there because there's always a followup question as to what you want to do with the data to the right of and below the affected cell. So, it hasn't saved you any real time.
Numbers has a very handy and secure method for moving a range of data. Highlight the range that you want to move. Then, Edit > Mark for Move. Now, click in the new starting location and Edit > Move.
There you go; several ways to recover from the inevitable oops. Depending on how soon you discover your mistake, Command-Z is probably the easiest fix.

Many thanks for the helpful tips. I too had the exact question. The "mark for move" technique works just as expected. Yet, I still cannot delete a single empty cell and have the column move upward one cell. After completing shift-command-x and shift-command-v on a single empty cells leaves an empty cell in the source destination. I wanted to delete it. My spreadsheet was small enough to shift blocks of cells upwards using "mark for move" until all the empty cells were at the bottom, whereby I then evoked the delete rows method. It worked but a bit kludgy. Better than before though as I hadn't used the "mark for move",
I'm using Numbers 09 on a Jan 2010 MBP running Mac OS X 10.6.7

If by delete you really mean clear the contents of a cell, then just click once on the cell and hit the 'delete' button.

So it's not strictly true that Numbers does not delete one cell, ever. It can if you have a one-column table.

How could I insert just a single cell in a table (not an entire extra row or column)?

I am having trouble making an easy edit. I need to insert an a 'CELL', but I am only being given the option to insert an entire 'ROW' or 'COLUMN'. I would like to just insert a cell and have the rest of the content below it move accordingly. Please help!

There's no way to set it so that you're just inserting a cell and everything moves along after that cell?
Simple answer is "No." Sorry.
InDesign tables are not good for juggling data. If you have a project that requires single-cell-insertion on a regular basis, I suggest doing your table outside of InDesign in an app with easier table-cell-juggling tools (Excel comes to mind here) and then perfecting you use of table and cell styles so that it's easy to update. It'll always be a hassle of some kind, of course, but the hassle can be minimized.

Writing text on an image inserted in a single cell of a table

Given a table with a cell...I can insert an image into the cell...
CAN I SOMEHOW insert text on top of the image in the cell?

Hi bill,
in addition to John and provided that I understood your question correctly:
1. Edit the image with an image editing program. Once there, give a border around the image and then write in there your text.
2. Modify your table with another row and then write your text in this new space. Fill the frame and the resulting gaps with a "camouflage paint".
3.Seperate your image from the text with a line break and write your text directly into the column (next to, below or above the image).
4. You also could create a css rule for floating text (around your image).

Inserting a single cell

Okay, I can insert a whole row or column, but how do I insert a single cell? Say I need to add a cell at G8, moving the data down one cell. Rather than trying to select 325 cells and move them down.
Simple in Excel, but I'm giving Numbers a reason to not use Excel.
Anyone?

I still submit that you haven't "grokked" the Numbers yet. I have used it extensively and have never needed this feature.
Well, I guess it's true I have not "grokked" Numbers yet. And yes, the data was entered inconsistantly, Jax, and that's the problem I'm trying to fix. All of which would be easier if I had a simple Add Single Cell command. Goodness, it's not like I'm asking for the Red Sea to part, just a single column.
I'm dealing with 2 tables, each with 12 categories, 60 entries per category, and I'm trying to compare the two. I sorted each by category and then by entry. Then I copied and pasted the appropriate columns from Table 2 over to Table 1. After moving columns around (which is easier than in Excel, admittedly), I'm going down the columns and looking for discrepancies. Finding one, I need to bump a column down a cell so I can add the missing entry so both columns are exactly the same. There are cells missing in both columns, so I can't assume one is more correct than the other.
So I guess the Martian thing to do (being a stranger in a strange land, i.e., a non-Microsoft spreadsheet), would be create 12 different tables based on twelve different categories. Of course, then I'll need to combine them back together because sometimes I sort by entry, not just category. Effective multiplying my efforts by 12.
Oh, and I was well aware of the demo, thank you very much. I'm a few months passed the 30 day limit before this project came about. I bought the software in an attempt to cut away from Microsoft Office. Surely y'all can understand that. Going cold turkey wasn't such a good idea, I guess.

How can perform insert /update /delete in one single mapping.

I want to is there any logic by which we can create 2-3 pipeline in a mappings like pipelines will work for insert / update /delete or storing soem rejected data according to conditional flag.
I tried it in a mapping but problem is that when target load order is like ins then upd then delete/reject . if new rec will come then control will pass through ins target . but if rec needs to update or delete then again control is going to ins target not update / delete target.
We have already given the all conditional flags in filter after lookup and before target .
all possibilities we checked but didnt got success.
last option is separate the mappings for insert / update/delete.....etc.
Is there any solution for this type of problem.
reply plz if any body have solutions.

Can a script manually insert a delete (or backspace) into a text area?

I'm new to action script, so this may have a simple answer, sorry if that's the case.
I have a little movie created with a simple purpose of trying to mimic a system like cell phones have for character input.
There are two text areas, one hidden off the screen that accepts the input from the user; a second text area in on screen and displays what the user had entered after some basic processing on the input.
The hidden text area is pretty basic with listener that is responsible for grabbing the input keys and then mangling them to be inserted into the displayed text area based on the cell phone text entry multi-tap rules. Example user press 2-2-2 and the hidden input accepts 222 and then appends 'C' to the display text area. That's working great, but I have a problem if the user wants to delete from the display text area. I can't find a way to insert a delete or backspace key into the display text area. I've tried using StringFromCharCode (8) // Key.BACKSPACE, but that doesn't work. That just displays one of those undefined glyphs. I figure that things like clear, and delete are handled somewhere higher in the input chain and that's where I'm having a problem.
I've looked, but I can't find a way to delete a single character from the text area. I was thinking if I could find the cursor location that I could just use some delete character method to get the job done, but I couldn't find how to do that.
Any ideas on how to pull off manual delete function in a text area?

Ned, I do really want to manually (by method of code) trigger a delete in a text area. The delete (or backspace) that I want added to the text area isn't directly entered by the user, it's the result of several key presses by the user. That's why I called it "manual" because it's done by the code, not by the user's direct input.
Think about how text entry works on most phones... if you want to enter a letter you have to cycle through all the letters on a single key until you get to the character desired. As I stated before, if you want a 'c' you need to press 2 button 3 times. This is basically what I'm trying to do, but I want to add the ability to delete a character too if the correct sequence in entered, for example a sequence of ### would equal a backspace.
Rothrock, I think you were thinking the same thing that a single key is used to do a backspace.
I was thinking that I could possibly insert key event into the event queue for the text area to process, but I wasn't sure about that.
Sorry, if this is confusing, I know it's not a straight forward design. I need onscreen and offscreen text areas with the onscreen one acting as a slave of the offscreen one.
The way the code currently works is hidden text area had a listner that responds to changes, and that handler processes the key entered and deletes that character from the hidden text area. After the full sequence of characters (say 2 button has been pressed 3 times) the handler then sends the resulting character into the display text area. This part of the code works great. I can add any character including some specials like tab and newline. However if I want the text area to delete a character I don't have a way to do that. That's why I tried to insert the backspace key (0x08 or ^H, for other oldschoolers), but using that as a char code or string from char code doesn't work.
I had also tried to create to set the focus to the display text area then create and dispatch a backspace keydown and keyup events to the visible text area and then return the focus back to the hidden textarea, but... no luck.

Insert and Delete at the same time?

I have a dynamic list and dynamic form. When a person inserts a record using the dynamic form, I would like to delete a record from another table using a foreign key when the new record is added (assuming a record exists in the other table). Is this achievable, and if so, can anyone provide any help?

As kendenny says, this appears to be a misunderstanding of how database transactions work.
As Hoek says, if it's an insert and delete on the same table, there is a MERGE statement that can help do that as a single statement.
However, you do not do an INSERT from one table and a DELETE at the same time from another table. But that doesn't matter, because that's the point of logica transactions on a database.
You perform your insert, which starts a transaction (if one isn't already started).
You then delete from your other table (which adds to the transaction)
When you're happy that both things are done, you COMMIT your transaction which then applies those changes.
If you're not happy with something you can ROLLBACK, and that will undo all the changes from the transaction.
So, the commit and rollback allow the changes to be applied as one logical unit, even though the changes are applied in multiple steps.

Problem with CS5 crashing when inserting or deleting page

I have a legacy file (educational textbook) that was created in CS2 and has been edited and updated over the past couple of years with no problems. The file is approximately 360 pages with around 30 illustrations, a ToC, and large index. When updating the material today, I went back to insert a page due to overflow text and InDesign crashed. This happens every time I try to insert or delete a single page. I can insert a single page on pages i through viii, but when I try to insert a page beginning at Sec2:1 InDesign crashes. I can open and close the file and edit it anywhere with no problems.
If I insert 2 pages at a time, it works fine and I can flow the text into the page. But, when I go to delete the extra page I don't need, it crashes. It doesn't seem to be specific to any particular master page in the file. I tried several times to export to an IDML file, reopen and save it to an InDesign file but the same problem occurs.
The same thing happens with the file on the same verson of InDesign that is on my laptop. This problem does not occur with other InDesign files that I have created in the past. I need some help. Thank you!

I think Steve was looking for a bug that affects new Macs, which we can rul out at this point.
I suspect some corrupt text of some sort, but that's just a guess. Ther first thing I'd do is make a copy of the file for backup, then start trying to find the problem.
You mentioned this was a CS2 file originally. What was the last version, and how much editing has beeen done in CS5? Do you have the old file and can you add pages in that version?
In the CS5 version, are you able to select half of the pages at a time in the Pages panel and use the Move Pages command to move them to a new file (you need to make the new file first)? In the new file, before you move the pages, rename Master Page A to something that you didn't use in the file that is giving you trouble so that it isn't applied to any of your pages when they are moved, and open the Paragraph Styles panel flyout menuand choose Load Styles. Load the [Basic Paragraph] style from the problem doc and replace the existing one, then you are ready to move the pages.
If you are able to move the pages, move half the pages into one file, and the other half into a second file. Save both files with new names. This is a divide and conquer search technique to see if we can isolate a problem page. With each half document, see if you are able to add or delete a page. Hopefully the answer will be yes for at least one half. If it's yes for both, move the pages from one of the new docs into the other to recombine them (you may have broken a text thread when moving the pages, so check for that at the point where the two were originally separated), save As with a new name and you should be good to go.
If only one half is working, repeat the exercise with the bad half, moving halves to two more new files. Continue to do this until you are down to a single page from the old file, then remove half the text (or illustrations) and try the test again. You should be able to isolate a problem very quickly this way -- about 8 steps to get a 360 page book to down to one page.
If NEITHER half doc works, it might be a corrupt style (and that may be the problem even if one of the half-docs is OK if that style is rarely used and doesn't get imported). When you move pages to a new doc, the styles will travel with them unless there are same-named styles already there. If you suspect a bad style, you should make a new blank doc, then define, not load, duplicate styles for all of the styles in the problem file, before moving the pages. This may be a lot of work, so an easier alternative might be to place your cursor in each story, then export that story to InDesign Tagged Text (If you ask over iin scripting, someone may have a script to export all the stories at once). You can then place the tagged text into a brand new file and see if that works.

a single cell. As far as I know the code should look something like
this: cellpadding= "0 10 0 10", but that's probably slightly or
completely off the mark and I'm not sure where to put it.

Can we have an example of using update, insert, and delete stored procedure

I would like to see an example of using retrieve (return resultset), update, insert, and delete stored procedures in JSF. I need to see syntax how JSF can call those stored procedures. This option is absolutely important when building web-application. Currently, I haven't found resource to do for this purpose yet. The database can be any such Oracle, DB2, pointbase, etc that support stored procedures.
Anyone knows?

I asked around a bit and here's some more info:
To bind a ResultSet to a read only Data Table component just set the "value" property of the Data Table component to point at it, and JSF will synthesize a DataModel around it.
* Note that because we can't call the stored procedure at design time, Creator can't do the fancy table layout stuff it does for rowsets. You'll need to hand craft the columns just like the Google Client example.
* As I mentioned previously, you will have to manually code the stored procedure access in your java code - see the code clip I mentioned in previous reply (and if this is via a stored procedure, then any textbook about JDBC will undoubtedly have examples). Simplest way might be a getter method on the page bean that contains the call to the stored procedure and returns the resulting ResultSet object.
* Don't forget to close the result set - we typically do this at the end of the request (i.e. add a close in the afterRenderResponse() method.
* Don't throw exceptions - or if you have to, make sure you close the result set in a finally clause (thrown exceptions bypass the afterRenderResponse method in the lifecycle).
* You give up on the caching provided by our RowSetDataModel (which can't be connected to a ResultSet even manually), so I would recommend that you only use datatables to display the data and then go to a single row page to do edits/deletes (similar to the TwoPage example in AppModel and the Update, Insert Delete tutorial).

Copy and Paste Multiple lines into a single cell

Folks:
I need to copy some plain text data into a single cell that has been merged with other cells to provider a larger unit; however, every time I copy and paste my data it gives me an error. In addition, if I paste the data into a single cell, the next line
of data inserts into the next row.
I understand that Alt+enter is a quick way to do what I want, but I already have the data typed out, and I do not want to type the data again.
Example: (If possible I want in one single cell)
Disks=32
Total space=1.74TB
Used space=1.20TB
Free space=0.54TB

Is there any way to do this but keep the source formatting? I don't see any "Paste Special" options when you do it this way.
That is not possible - when you copy/paste this way, you only copy the plain text, not the formatting. You'll have to apply formatting to the cell with pasted lines from scratch.

Concatenation of Data from 4 infoobjects into a single cell in Bex Report

I have loaded ODS with the description data. The source system for loading the ODS is the flat file. The ODS data should be a replica of the flat file.
In the flat file, there is a description field corresponding to a particular ID. This Description is greater than the standard 60 char length. So, I had to split the description while loading the flat file using single line routine in the Transfer Structure.
So, while loading different the data, I split the description field data from the flat file into 4 infoobjects and the flat file data was loaded into the ODS.
Now, from the reporting point of view, I need to display the entire description data from the 4 info-objects into a single cell in the Bex report.
Please suggest a solution for this.

Using Insert and Delete icons in table control wizard.

Can anyone tell me how to perform a new row insertion or deletion in a table created using the table control wizard.
I see there is a form fcode_insert_row and fcode_delete_row, but dont know how to call them and what parameters to pass and all.
Since iam new to SAP-ABAP, some code samples will be a great help.

You have to add the icons personally in the table control.. . Put fcode for addition button as INSE and delete as DELE ..coding will be already thr in the wizard no need to anything just add icons in the table control by selecting from f4 help on icons option of screen.
