Insert to tape

I have a problem with edit to tape. Our PVW2800 is overwriting timecode when it shouldn't. On opening the edit to tape window the timecode insert button is not selected, but timecode is written to tape anyway. The only way to prevent timecode being written is to timecode insert on then off again. The next time you open the edit to tape window it has reset and you need to turn it on and off again.
I am using a dual G5 with a Decklink Extreme (two similar machines which both have the same problem). Using Decklink's Blackmagic Deck Control the insert process works perfectly, so it seems to be an FCP problem. We had no problems with this when we were using FCP4.5, only when we moved to FCP5 (one machine is new with FCP5 as the first version installed, the other is an upgrade from FCP4.5).
Any clues would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Trevor

FCP Rescue "trashes" your existing preferences. It also can save your preferences when you know them to be in an uncorrupted state, so the next time you have any problems, you can restore your backup preferences as opposed to trashing them.
Repairing preferences is an activity performed by /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app and should be done on a regular basis... Crank up that program and it should be pretty self explanatory.

  • Headphones adapter to insert my tape adapter plug into iPhone?

Is there an adapter that will let me insert the Sony tape adapter plug so I can listen to the iPhone in my car? Currently, the plug doesn't fit into the iPhone. Thanks

I did a workaround to avoid getting an additional $10 or $20 dongle by taking an XActo knife to my cassette adapter plug.
Because the plug has a rubber housing, I was able to carve the rubber back enough to the point where it would fit in the iPhone headphones jack. I didn't even need to touch knife to metal at any point in order to do this.
Obviously, there's a chance you could ruin your adapter and need to buy a new one of those as well as a new dongle, so be aware of the risks.

  • How to configure tape to sun solaris server?

    Hi
We have a tape "Quantum Super DLT 600 tape drive" connected to Sun solaris 9 and working properly.
Now we want to connect and configure it to Sun solaris 10 server. I want to know how we can do it?
I checked in st.conf file , "#tape-config-list=" is commented in both solaris 9 while in solaris 10 it is not there.
I think i will just have to connect the tape to new srver(solaris 10) and do a reconfiguration boot. Right??
Also, what do i need to do for connecting the tape back to solaris 9 server.
    Thanks

You really don't need to reboot the server. Connect the tape to the server and type devfsadm -Cv. Then type dmesg and check whether Solaris detect the tape or not.
if not do a reboot and see.
after doing one of above, insert a tape to the tape drive and type "mt stat" and see you got any output about a tape.
Refer Solaris 9 and Solaris 10 System Administration Guides.

  • Edit to tape with frame rate conversion

    Hi,
I'm outputting a 23.976 sequence directly onto a 29.97 drop frame HDCAM SR tape. Seems to work fine, the 3:2 pulldown is there, timecode is OK. Since this project is to be delivered for a national television network, I'd like to know about any possible flaw in this workflow. I know I will have trouble matching timecodes if I want to make inserts on tape but apart from that...? Any thoughts about how reliable this workflow is?
    Thanks!

Using a capture card no doubt, right?
I've done this more than a few times. I can even insert edit when I need to. Didn't have an issue. Because the IN point in FCP is set, and the IN point on the tape is set. And the card handles the duration conversion.
Darn reliable. I only had one hiccup in 24 outputs.

  • Help - HDV tape import problem - Sony HC-3 broken - Questions/Warning

My Sony HC-3 HD camcorder has just failed. I've had it just over 3 years.
I really don't enjoy video editing much, and despite maybe shooting 20-30 tapes of HD footage of my young children, I'd only got round to importing a handful over Firewire, but was lulled into a false sense of security perhaps by treating the tapes as my film negatives (new tape each time).
The camcorder behaved a bit erratically a few weeks ago when inserting a tape, then the other day it gave an error, I ejected the tape and had a constant C32:11 error flashing. Lots of user reports on the web, no idea what the real issue is, but any suggested fixes didn't work.
Essentially I cannot close the tape transport compartment with or without a tape - it won't accept a tape and return to record/play position.
Almost feels as though something isn't clicking/catching when you push the tape in.
Anyhow, I thought if worst comes to worst I'll just buy Sony's latest model - then the realisation they'd discontinued consumer HDV tape camcorders. Not a happy bunny.
I've sent camcorder to local Sony repair center and am awaiting outcome.
    Now my questions are:
1 - Is there any way of simply reading the tape data using an SD camcorder if I ever needed to ? - There are programs that use them to archive data so I guess in theory it must be possible just to read the data, unless it's stored in an SD compliant file format rather than just data.
2 - is 1080i HDV (1440x1080 res) as captured by the Sony HC3 a cross-vendor format or Sony specific - (if 1 is impossible) could I if needed say pick up a Canon HDV camcorder and use that to import my video?
3 - are we to assume now that DV/HDV is dead as a consumer format despite it's better image quality compared to hard drive/memory card video codecs.
Hopefully Sony will repair my camcorder for a fixed rate charge - if they can't or won't what are my options for importing the video I've got on tape?
There are bound to be companies who'll do this for a fee if worst comes to worst, but I feel a bit annoyed with Sony for dropping support for the format after buying an expensive camcorder only a few years ago.
Even if it can be repaired, I'm not sure I'll want to continue using it if there's a risk of future failure and inability to import old tapes. Frankly I'm glad I've used the video function on my Canon 5D II a lot in the last year or so for quick video clips even if many are transiently OOF.
Yes, my fault for not importing the tapes immediately after shooting, but I'd assumed that I would be able to import the data well into the future evene if it meant a new device.

    Jeremy Hansen wrote:
HDV is not dead!!! Heavens, the pros laugh at AVCHD and hard drive based cameras. When you shoot on HDV tape, you have a backup.
Sony do still manufacture HDV pro camcorders of course - it's the early adopter consumer they've left in the lurch.
One of my original reasons for using tape was this automatic backup - silly of me not to routinely import tapes to Mac of course.
    To answer your questions:
    1. No, you can't read it with an SD camera. you are correct that it is just 12GB of data, but no software really knows how to go back and forth, so to speak. In case you care, there was an app years ago (I forget which) that could use a Dv camera as a 12GB backup drive. But practically, no.
Shame really seeing as it's just data - I'd used the Firewire SDK kit DVHSCap app to pull off 12-13GB m2ts files in the past which I felt would be ok for computer archival, unedited direct playback on PS3 and fairly quick to convert to AIC as needed for future editing purposes using a utility.
I did wonder if DVHSCap might be able to pull the data from an SD camcorder, but maybe the tape just would not play.
    2. HDV is HDV. If you had problems, pros would advise you to import with the same camera, or at least same brand. But, usually there are no problems. There shouldn't be, but occasionally there are.
I was hoping this was the case, great.
    3. Image quality is NOT better with hard drive based camcorders. In fact, most use a higher rate of compression than HDV. What is the advantage? A tape-based camera takes an hour to import and hour. Hard drive cams go faster. Some look great, but there is no advantage over HDV.
Yes, the only advantage of HD/card based camcorders is simpler import faster than real time, and I'd always been concerned with HD camcorders you'd have too many eggs in one basket if the HD failed in between imports to computer.
I own an HC-3, and you have to realize it was an early camera in the high-def market. I don't use it often (except as a secondary) because of its optics.
I've always found it produced pretty acceptable results - constantly amazed that 3-4 year old products get regarded as obsolete by manufacturers who just want you to buy the latest gadget.
    Here is my advice:
Get a Canon HDV camera. Use it to import your tapes, and enjoy its superior optics and color quality. Opinion? Yes, but I believe it.
I may consider that if repair fails - any model recommendations that would trounce the Sony?
    Cheers

  • How to dub (copy) VHS tapes to DVDs (DVR670KU)

Josh @ Toshiba Tech Support (800-631-3811) gave these instructions which worked for us.  Note: first VHS tape we tried ejected immediately.  Second VHS tape we tried stayed in and dubbing worked.
    - turn DVR670KU on
    - press DVD button
    - press Input Select button and choose "L1"
    - insert blank DVD
    - press Rec Mode button and choose mode (ex: SP)
    - press VCR button
    - insert VHS tape
    - press Play button
    - press Pause button
    - press Dubbing button
    - unit automatically begins VCR to DVD dubbing and displays "DB" on front panel
    - press Stop button when done

Note that I'm not Josh. I'm not a Toshiba employee.
Are you saying that you followed the steps in the original post, up to and including
"Press Dubbing button" and the VHS tape did not begin playing? If so, did you get
any kind of notification on the screen? The VHS tape should have been in pause mode,
and should start playing once the DVD Dubbing button is pressed on the remote.
Are you trying to dub a commercial tape? (which you can't do with the Toshiba DVR620 and
    DVR670)
What type of recordable DVD are you using? DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW? And it's
    either blank or unfinalized?
Can you play the tape when you are not in a DVD dubbing situation? That is, just insert
the VHS tape, press the VCR button on the remote, then press Play on the remote?

  • For SD camcorder are miniDV tape and Firewire bad choices?

I just purchased a camcorder (Panasonic SDR_H40) which appears incompatible with iMovie HD 6, so I am going to return it. I currently have iMovie HD 6.0.3 and will probably stay with that version (based on some discussions on this site). I was going to buy a miniDV tape camcorder but they seem hard to find and the salesman said that this format was becoming obsolete. Also other discussions on this site suggest that Apple may be phasing out Firewire. Assuming that I can find a SD miniDV camcorder, presumably with a Firewire output, is this a bad choice for a camcorder? I'd appreciate any help.
    Tricia

for 'Standard' (=not HiDef) video, miniDv is still an excellent choice:
° less compression => excellent pic quality
° no limitation in 'disk space' => insert new tape = another 13GB/60min recording time..
° easy/convenient long term storage of 'raw data' => keep the tapes
° 100% compatible with iMovie 6 and other versions..
prob here: actual consumer MacBooks lack a fw-port => miniDV import is via fw only.
your options: use your 'old' Mac; use a MacMini; use a MacPro ...
nobody can tell you about 'phasing' of fw on Macs .. +'we don't comment on future products'+ ..

  • Passive network tap or span port on all trafic

i want to insert a tap/span between the uverse in my house and the wall jack so i can push all traffic to security onion. the wall jack is RJ-11 and the pinout doe snot allow for a passive network jack. i bought a smart switch and spanned the ports and that didnot work either. 1. is there a way to designate one port on my i3812V residential device as a span and span all other ports to it? 2. what is the pinout needed for me to build a passive tap to sniff traffic? 3. has this been done before, and if so, am i missing something obvious?

    Garland,
SPAN session are only available on the Switches. If you setup an SPAN session on the port where the ASA is connected you should be able to see all the traffic that is leaving/getting to that switchport; so it doesn't matter if the ASA drops the packet; if the switch was able to send it you will see it.
There is also the capture feature on the ASA; you can capture the traffic that gets to the interface of the ASA you are troubleshooting.

  • Storedge c2, very slow tape loading

    Hi
I don't know a lot about the storedge C2 library. When I remove a tape via the mail slot, it takes a minute for the whole process. But when I insert a tape, it takes 7 minutes for each tape. If I'm adding a lot of tapes, ... you do the math.
Is there a setting which can help speed up this process? Is the library doing an entire inventory or something?
I have the manual, doesn't say anything about this type of process being BRUTAL.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thenobleshrew,
Hey dude give these programs a try. I have tried both. Onyx is free and Macaroni cost a few buck. Both work and I saw a major increase especially on my MBP C2D. Try Macaroni first and use it til the free trial expires and then get onyx after if you want to try something different.
    Good luck!

  • Recording videos while recording sound?

Hey everyone. Well I just got a new MacBook and I wanted to make some YouTube videos of me playing my guitar. How exactly would I record this? I have tried on iMovie, but I couldn't find a way to record audio and video at the same time. If anyone can help that would be awesome!

You will need a miniDV camcorder (not HDV or AVCHD). Connect your camcorder to your Mac via Firewire. Turn your camcorder on to camera mode (not playback). With most miniDV cams you don't even need to insert a tape or be recording, the camera just needs to be in camera mode. Start iMovie. You can capture the audio + video right into iMovie.
ps If your camcorder has an external mic input, plug in a decent mic and you will get better sound than what you get from the camcorder's internal mic.

  • Mac Says DVD Is Empty

I copied old home movies from a VHS tape to a DVD-RW.
It plays on my DVD Player but not on my Mac.
Is there anything I can do?

    Here's exactly what I did...
Inserted the tape into the VCR. Showed it on my TV. Started my DVD player and set it to RECORD. The DVD player copied the entire home movie I had, onto the DVD.
I don't know anything about analog or digital...sorry! (I'm not too familiar with computers, etc.)
All I know is, that the old movies plays on the DVD player but not on my Mac.

  • Opens and plays correctly in the viewer, but of zero length in the browser.

The song I sing to FC is "I can't get started with you." It probably is my fault because I don't come in the front door like the rest of you, with capture from a camera. I come from Still Life, exported to iMovie. Unfortunately, Still Life seems to label the .MOV as coming from an old version of iMovie, even though I am using iMovie HD 6.0.1. Final Cut Pro will not import my .MOV.
I have contacted Granted Software about removing the erroneous designation. In the meantime I tried a workaround by exporting from iMovie HD 6.0.1 to Quick Time Pro 7.04. I got a .DV and Final Cut opened it. Unfortunately, it opened it in the viewer and I do not know how to get it to the Browser and the TimeLine, where I can add the great effect which I want. It did play in the viewer.
I then tried going directly from Still Life to Quick Time Pro and again got a movie that Final Cut would open and which would play in the viewer. This time the sequence did seem to appear in the Browser, but, Item Properties Sequence 1, while showing correctly much data about the sequence, was blank when it came to size.
My Final Cut Pro is an upgrade from Final Cut Express HD 3.0, so I opened the same movie in FCE. Same result. Looked good in the viewer, as my consolation prize.
Given that few of you travel this path, I am not overly optimistic about chances for a solution. But I thought I would ask. Gentlemen? Ladies?

I'm the grumpy guy around here. It just seems to me that everyone expects to install FC Studio and be Dede Allen overnight. Just rubs me the wrong way is all. There's a pretty steep learning curve with Studio, especially for someone who wanders in from left field (OH, wait, Rand-- right field) and I certainly expect someone to at least TRY before asking the most basic questions. I've been working with this program since version 1 and I'm still learning things about it.
The dsr-11 is a little workhorse of a deck. It's a real basic unit-- no vu meters, timecode or user bit display etc. But for getting your DV material into and out of fcp it's just fine. I've had mine for over 5 years now and it's steady as a rock. I've never had ANY issue with it. TIP OF THE DAY: Don't get clumsy and knock the door off. And insert small tapes gently. It takes it's time with tape insertion, unlike an old 3/4 or beta sp deck where you can slam tapes in and out without a second thought.
Yeah, the manuals are pithy, but you know, there is a lot of great stuff to be learned from them. One of the things I love about fcp is that there are multiple ways to do any one thing, depending really on your workflow and methodology, and basic approach to a computer system. you can find things in pulldown menus, by keystroke commands, in folders in the browser. Actually it's easy to teach your self to skim the manuals-- there always seems to be an intro page or pages that describe in excruciating detail a particular function. If you grasp that, or know already WHAT the function is, you can skim forward to the HOW.
DO learn the keyboard as much as you can. Dragging clips around is a sloppy way to work, in my never very humble opinion.

  • Problems installing/configuration Legato Storage Manager / 8i

I have installed Oracle 8i (8.1.7) on a Windows NT 4.0 EE platform.
For backups we use OEM and LSM.
When I insert a tape to backup my database, LSM will put this backup after the backup which is allready on tape.
For the backup we use 5 tapes (mo, tu, we, th, sa).
The tapes will rotate every week.
How can I make LSM to start the backup at the begin of the tape and not after the backup of the week before.
I think that's a very simple parameter within Legato, but which one??
If you have the solution, please let me know.

Thanks, but we solved it..JBoss ,running as a service on Windows 2003 server, tried to log on (with the credentials of the one that installed Office) but the service didn't have the right to do it..So it failed to start..If you change the rights for services from secpol.msc everything goes well..

  • DLT 8000 problem with DVD SP 4.1.2

Every once in a while we will create a DLT for a client who authored their project in DVD SP. We don't use DVD SP daily for authoring, we use Spruce Maestro. But since we have the system, we do occasionally do this kind of thing. We've never had any problems, but today something new has come up and I'm stumped:
The setup is a Dual 2GHZ G5 with an ATTO UL4D card installed. We have this connected to a RAID normally. When we get one of these jobs, we shut down the RAID, disconnect both SCSI cables from it, and connect one to the DLT 8000 that we normally have on our Windows-based Spruce Premaster machine. We use the same terminator that we use on the RAID. This has always worked flawlessly.
Today, I did all of that, and loaded up the client project to write to tape. DVD SP goes from "Insert Tape" to "Waiting for Device" when I insert the tape, so it's clearly communicating at some level. The mac sees that the DLT drive is there in both DVD SP and the System Profiler, so no problems there. I've tried both SCSI channels, I've tried multiple terminators. Every time the same thing happens - the tape goes through its normal loading procedure, then pauses, then rewinds and gives me the green "Ok to remove tape" light. DVD Studio Pro then tells me that there's no drive there.
The drive is definitely good. We just used it Thursday to output a DVD-9 on the PC, and like I said, we've switched this back and forth for years between these machines with no problems.
    Any ideas?

Sorry - just realized that i mis-typed the version number. it's actually 4.2.1, not 4.1.2.
    Also - a few updates:
    1) we've determined that this is not a hardware issue. We are able to successfully write other DVD SP projects to the drive, but not this one.
    2) We tossed the .LAY and .layout files, thinking maybe they were corrupt. But this didn't fix the problem. It still fails in the same way.
Any idea as to what might cause this?
