  • What are rules of etiquette for this forum?

    I have posted a few basic questions in recent times about java programming issues. Right now I am using JBuilder2005. I am relatively new to the Java progarmming community, and I don't know if JB2005 is considered evil over say, WebSphere, Eclipse, etc. But responses I have received for my basic questions (which I ended up finding my own answers to) have been less than friendly.
    Case:

    Re: assing which servlet is the startup page? Author: IanSchneider Mar 11, 2005 3:54 PM (reply 1 of 1)
    You gots to be crazy if you think I'm helping you with your assing. Whats JB2005 anyway? Whatever it is, it sounds like its an impediment to you knowing whats going on. Try looking in your web.xml and actually understanding how servlets work.
    <<
    I have received responses similar to this for other posts where people are conscientiously steering me in the wrong direction. Well, I am not posting to ruffle any feathers, but since I have not seen any specific rules on what to post/not post other than no disruptive stuff, my question is if this forum is like a Pay forum and/or an anti Borland forum (vs a forum for exchanging information on Java programming).
    While I'm at it I am trying to use a DataExpress control from JB2005 to connect to an Access Database (for practice - we have Oracle but I am practicing on Access). I select the driver
    sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver
    then it asks for the URL, it gives me this option in the ...:
    jdbc:odbc:MS Access Database
    so where do I add the location of the mdb file? I can't get the control to connect. I can connect to Access if I just use code and read/insert rows of data, but I want to use a DataExpress TableDataSet control so I can load it up with rows of data from a database file in a client application. I can load up an html table of data in a servlet for display . But how can I display data the same way in a client app?
    Is this forum even the correct forum for me to ask this question - or should I look for a Borland forum?
    Thanks.

  • Inserting url isn't working

    Not sure if this is the right place to report bugs, but...
    In the message compose window there's a button to insert a link.
    Unfortunately, the syntax it inserts for the link is not the correct
    link syntax.
    What you get is
    {noformat}
    link
    {noformat}
    What's required is
    {noformat}
    [url http://www.oracle.com]link
    {noformat}

    Yes, that's unfortunate; it's been reported already, e.g. [url http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=1134118&tstart=0]there, and probably longer ago too.
    Since I've been on this forum though, I haven't seen any official answer from the maintenance team about fixing forum software bugs...

  • Geez, Louise, This Forum Is Hard To Use!!!!

    I've been trying to help out all day in the Photoshop forum, given the new releases that have come out today.
    I'm running Windows 8.1 and IE11.  Current software, though not the world's most popular.
    All day I've been plagued by such issues as:
    The editor randomly eating phrases when doing things like trying to bold some text or delete one character.  This happens OFTEN.
    Inability to delete things.
    Inability to type below a quoted message.
    Images inserting in the wrong place.
    Login prompt popping up and replacing the editor (only here in the Forum Comments section so far).
    Inability to jump to the most recent post in a multi-page thread from Discussions view.
    Do any of you Adobe folks in charge of keeping this forum up to date actually use it any more?  John C?  What's going on.  I'm a patient person but this is beyond what I've had to deal with before.  It's basically non-functional to be brutally honest.
    Just before posting this I added adobe.com to the list of sites slated for Compatibility View (it's the only site I have in there).  But already once during typing this I got to a point where I couldn't delete a character I had just typed.
    Any chance someone might be working to make this work better?  Do you need contract help to make it better?
    -Noel
    P.S., I added an exclamation point for each time I had to re-type the subject, just trying to create this post.  Notice that there are 4 of them.

    Enterprise Mode - While it DID improve the utility of the editor, it ended up being pretty much unusable for a couple of other reasons.
    For one, the forum doesn't really render properly with it, and for another it's specific to particular pages (URLs).  Thus I was not able to set it up to run on the Adobe forum in general.  Microsoft claims that through the use of the Enterprise Mode Site List Manager one can set it up to work on an entire site, but in practice I was not able to accomplish that.  Perhaps it's a subtle difference between Windows 8.1 Pro and Enterprise editions.
    But today we've seen a minor forum update come in...  So I'm wondering:  Without any special mode setup, I'm typing this message.  I'm going to insert an image into it and see if it works.
    Nope.  Still inserts in front of the text.
    But interestingly I didn't have any other quirks while typing this message.  Probably just lucky, as I didn't really use many bold or italic attributes...
    Edit:  I'm back in the post editing a bit.  Could it be I'm actually sensing an improvement today in the behavior of the editor - outside of the image insertion quirk?  I was having problems pasting things with dashes in them...  Trying...
    here.  Dashes-in-here and-here and-here-and-here.   Nope, not fixed.  It just ate the first part of this paragraph.

  • Need a text box  -- similar to what this forum provides

    I have users that complain that entering text messages on a
    web site is a pain because there isn't any of the editing
    capability like in Word. So .... being able to offer a text area
    just like the one I'm typing in would be great (mainly the ability
    to add bullets, bold, underline, etc.). It's on Adobe's Forum so I
    can only hope (?) it's available somehow to use in DW, if even as
    an extension.
    Anyone have suggestions?

    Not a clue :)

    I DW you place you cursor in your table/div where you have
    inserted
    your form and then you select insert - form - textfield.
    Postiion it, use the object and
    > lay out options to say...limit the amount of characters,
    binding and the

    In DW you have the properties inspector
    You can simply type just about what ever you want, place it
    on top,
    > to the left, right or bottom all in the various layout
    options.
    IN DW you do that with CSS
    No coding
    > required.
    No coding required here either. But... DW is not a wysiwyg
    editor. You
    have to have some understanding of html and css... otherwise
    you wont
    have a clue :)
    Unless you want to connect it to a data base or have the
    form fields

    Well... DW has some built in facilities in php or asp coding
    and even
    for jsp I think.

    Search this forum for "formmailer" and I'm sure you'll be
    fine. I think
    there is a Alan that gives a great explanation on how to

    I guess that is why they call it dream??? weaver.

  • [SOLVED] Is it possible to view this forum in non-"Classic" mode?

    The reason I ask, is that I have a 24" screen & not the best eyesight, so I run 24 point fonts as default in Firefox.
    I have learned to scroll across code boxes using the arrow keys, which I have to do very often, though this is not really a big problem.
    If there was an option to put all poster details across the top of their posts, then we could have the full width of the page to read, as it is now, there is a LOT of empty space down the left hand side of the post content.
    I had a look in my Profile page for this forum, but could not find a way to make this choice, as I can on some other forums. (Hopefully I missed something?)
    I understand that perhaps this is beyond the capability of this forum software, which if so, is unfortunate.

    Over at the ostalk.org forum, I put my questions, & tjwoosta posted some code to use with Stylish, it made the left column much narrower but at the expense of the details.
    So I asked him if it was hard to place the details under the field headings (From: Registered: Posts:) & he gave me the following:
    @namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml);
    @-moz-document domain("bbs.archlinux.org") {
    .postleft, .postfootleft {
    width: 80px !important;
    .postright, .postfootright {
    border-left: 80px solid !important;
    border-color: #f9f9f9 !important;
    Which I've modified by changing the two 80px numbers to 200px, & it is starting to look like their may be a solution here not far off, using Stylish.
    Users are just going to have to set the size of these two 80px numbers to suit their font size & screen resolution.  It is so easy to do.
    Also I've just learned that there may not be any need to incorporate TJ's code into Dark Grey, as you can run them both via Stylish simultaneously anyway.
    Just have to get rid of these white rectangles that can turn up below the email line & above that of the Online/Offline?

  • Class unloading doesn't work as described in this forum !!!

    Hi,
    to the problem of dynamic class unloading many people in this forum wrote:
    - write your own class loader
    - load the class to be unloaded later
    - set all instances of your own class loader to null
    - if the work is done set all instances of the loaded classes to null
    - call the garbage collector and the classes will be removed
    I constructed a simple test for the problem:
    - the test class
    public class Impl {
    public String getVersion () {
    return "1";
    - instanciating the test class
    - printing the value of getVersion() to the screen
    - changing the return value of getVersion() and recompiling it (the test application is still runnig)
    - unload try (see below)
    - instanciating the test class
    - printing the value of getVersion() to the screen
    Back to the tipps above. Why doing this? The theory says a class loader stores every loaded class for
    suppressing unnecessary reloads. In reality the classes are NOT stored in the own class loader but in
    the parent of it. If no parameter is given to a class loader's constructor the parent of a class loader
    is the system classloader.
    Let's have a look at the source code of java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(...):
    protected synchronized Class loadClass(String name, boolean resolve)
    throws ClassNotFoundException
    // First, check if the class has already been loaded
    Class c = findLoadedClass(name);
    if (c == null) {
    try {
    if (parent != null) {
    ### here the loadClass() of the parent is called and the
    ### loaded class is stored within the parent
    c = parent.loadClass(name, false);
    } else {
    c = findBootstrapClass(name);
    } catch (ClassNotFoundException e) {
    // If still not found, then call findClass in order
    // to find the class.
    c = findClass(name);
    if (resolve) {
    resolveClass(c);
    return c;
    My Idea was: Give a null to the class loader's constructor so the classes cannot be stored within a parent.
    Here my test class loader (it is build as it is described within javadoc of java.lang.ClassLoader
    except the constructor):
    import java.io.*;
    public class MyClassLoader extends ClassLoader {
    public MyClassLoader () {
    super ( null );
    public Class findClass ( String name ) {
    byte[] b = loadClassData ( name );
    return defineClass ( name, b, 0, b.length );
    private byte[] loadClassData ( String name ) {
    byte[] ret = null;
    try {
    InputStream in = new FileInputStream ( name + ".class" );
    ret = new byte[in.available ()];
    in.read ( ret );
    } catch ( Exception e ) {
    e.printStackTrace ();
    return ret;
    The loading of the class works fine
    ClassLoader cl = new MyClassLoader ();
    Class c = cl.loadClass ( "Impl" );
    Object i = c.newInstance ();
    Impl impl = (Impl)i;
    The class "Impl" was found and instanciated. But the cast "Impl impl = (Impl)i;" causes a
    "java.lang.ClassCastException: Impl"
    May second idea was deleting all instances of the class to unload from the class loader via reflection.
    A strange way I know but if this is the only way I will do it. But this doesn't work too.
    After deleting the class from the class loader and all its parents the class is still anywhere in the depth
    of the VM.
    Can anybody help me with this problem?
    Thanks in advance,
    Axel.

    <pre>
    I made a similar and simpler program and it worked:
    import java.net.URLClassLoader;
    import java.net.URL;
    public class DynamicExtension {
         public static void main(String args[]) throws Exception {
              URL[] ua = new URL[] {  new URL("file://c:\\TEMP\\") };
              URLClassLoader ucl = new URLClassLoader(ua);
              MyLoadable l =
                   (MyLoadable) ucl.loadClass("LoadableObject").newInstance();
              l.printVersion();
              Thread.currentThread().sleep(10000);
    //you have ten seconds to replace the old version of the LoadableObject.class file
    //so yo?d better had compiled the new one before executing this
              ucl = new URLClassLoader(ua);
              l = (MyLoadable) ucl.loadClass("LoadableObject").newInstance();
              l.printVersion();
              ucl = null;
              l = null;
              System.gc();
    public class LoadableObject implements MyLoadable {
         public void printVersion() {
              System.out.println("version 1");
         protected void finalize() {
              System.out.println("finalizing " + this);
    public interface MyLoadable {     void printVersion();  }
    C:\Java\TIJ2\Test>java DynamicExtension
    version 1
    version 2
    finalizing LoadableObject@1bd03e
    finalizing LoadableObject@4abc9
    The ClassCastException was due to the fact that one class was loaded by the system class loader, the one that appers as Impl impl = (Impl), and the other by MyClassLoader. That mean that they are different for the VM because they are in different namespaces: The namespace for MyClassLoader is the set of classes loaded by itself and those returned to it by his parent class loader as a result of a request to MyClassLoader?s parent class loader to load a class.
    Setting null for the parent of MyClassLoader was in fact the cause of the problem, because that caused a call to a native method called findBoostrapClass. I guess this method looks for the classes in the bootstrap classpath where MyClassLoader shouldn?t be. This causes MyClassLoader loaded the class itself. If MyClassLoader had had the system class loader as its parent the result had been that only one classloader would have loaded the class. This is what happens in the example above so no ClassCastException is thrown.
    In the source code for ClassLoader
    there is the following:
    * The classes loaded by this class loader. The only purpose of this
    * table is to keep the classes from being GC'ed until the loader
    * is GC'ed.
    private Vector classes = new Vector(); /*
    and:
    * Called by the VM to record every loaded class with this loader.
    void addClass(Class c) {
    classes.addElement(c);
    I would like to have seen findLoadedClass checking the already loaded classes in this Vector, but this method is native. Anyway, as the code for loadClass shows, the parent or bootstrap classloader is checked if findLoadedClass doesn?t find the class; Can we guess that findLoadedClass only checks the clases loaded by the classloader, not its parent?
    By the way, could an example like this be made in c++?

    Welcome to this forum on Core J2EE Patterns by the Sun Java Center!
    CONTEXT:
    This forum is intended for discussing the patterns from the Sun Java Center J2EE Pattern Catalog and other topics discussed in our book, Core J2EE Patterns.
    We, the authors of the book, welcome you to this forum.
    WHO WE ARE:
    We are Enterprise Java Architects from the Sun Java Center (SJC), which is the Java consulting organization of Sun Microsystems. We are a world-wide group of architects focusing on all consulting related to Java technologies.
    Visit our web-site for more information on SJC:
    http://www.sun.com/service/sunps/jdc/index.html
    BACKGROUND:
    Over the last few years, we at SJC have worked with our customers in architecting, designing, and implementing solutions on the J2EE platform. We have worked on documenting the J2EE patterns for over two years and released the patterns for public review in Beta form via the Java Developer Connection in May, 2001.
    The beta version of the patterns is available online as The Sun Java Center J2EE Pattern Catalog at:
    http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/J2EE/patterns/
    Subsequent to the release, we received great feedback and comments from hundreds of reviewers. We then worked towards incorporating the feedback into the pattern documentation. One of the common comments was about the lack of code examples in the online documentation. The latest pattern documentation provides many code examples and incorporates all the feedback received so far.
    BOOK INFORMATION:
    Core J2EE Patterns, the book, was released at JavaOne 2001 during June 4-9, and will be available in stores around the end of June 2001.
    The book includes the complete updated Sun Java Center J2EE Pattern Catalog with 15 patterns covering these J2EE technologies: Java Server Pages (JSP), Servlets, Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB), and Java Message Service (JMS). In addition to the J2EE Pattern Catalog, the book also provides other chapters that discuss design considerations,
    bad practices, and J2EE Refactorings. Example code is included for all patterns and strategies.

    ---Authors of Core J2EE Patterns

    Rajakannan,
    There are numerous ways to implement a templating mechanism in support of the composite view pattern, included in the catalog as a presentation-tier pattern.
    The goal is to avoid simply having monolithic views with all the formatting code embedded directly withing the view. If we have common subviews that are shared across several or more views then we end up with a copy-and-paste type of reuse...undesirable. So, modularity is one issue. Another major force when considering the Composite View pattern is that we may want to manage the layout of our pages and the content of our pages separately. We may have some logical regions defined, such as a search panel and main body, and a subview that plugs into those logical regions that map to a physical page (ie: x.jsp and y.jsp). We may then want to vary one independent of the other...ie: we may want to modify the layout of the page w/o changing the content and we may want to vary the content w/o touching the layout.
    There are a number of implementation strategies that can be used to implement the Composite View pattern, ranging from relatively simple to much more sophisticated. We describe each in our book and include source code examples.
    The example in the book that allows for supporting all the issues described above is implemented using the "Custom Tag View Management Strategy" and uses a tag library written by David Geary, that supports the Composite View pattern. The library is also included in David's new book, Adv. JavaServer Pages, Prentice Hall, 2001.
    Again, it's simply one implementation and, as you mention, there are many different ways to implement this strategy.
    Thanks for your question,
    Dan

    Moving Threads:
    It may happen that, your question might have been moved to this forum in an attempt by another moderator from
    a different forum to help you find the correct forum or we might move your threads to an appropriate forum as and when necessary.
    If a community member gave you the URL/link of a specific Technet forum, then you may request a move to that
    specified forum (If a link to the forum category is specified; you'll still need to pick a specific forum from that category) or thread will be moved to the appropriate forum if a Moderator is around.
    NOTE:
    We cannot move a thread to another Microsoft forum that's not in the TechNet Forum System such as ASP.net,
    IIS.net and Answers.Microsoft.com etc… So we can only provide links to those forums.
    Marking Answers:
    We propose a reply (such as a link about where to go ask your question) to a recent question as an answer,
    and then we will usually wait one week (~7 days) before we mark it as the answer. We prefer you (the Asker/OP - Original Poster) to mark the answer, but we do not require it if you abandon the thread for a long time.
    If you (the Asker/OP - Original Poster) refuse to let us propose and mark an answer (without telling us why
    and helping us figure out the alternatives/workarounds), then we might need to lock a thread or move it to the Off Topic forum.

  • Why does this forum open in a window without the menu bar ?

    When coming to this forum trough the " Access the Java Studio Creator Community Forum" link on the "Java Studio Creator Forums" page, it opens a browser window without the menu bar. I understand that Sun thinks it's better for me not to have the menu bar, but I personally prefer to have it. What I prefer over everything else is to have the choice.
    By the way, one of the reason I prefer Sun products over Microsoft products is that I generally can choose what is better for me. Like to have or have not a menu bar, or to have my IDE in english rather that in french. (By the way, this last issue has been solved ;-))

    Use this direct URL, you can have the menu bar still --

  • Embedding screen grab into this forum

    Hi,
    I need to get a couple of screen grabs into a forum message... how do I that as I thought a simple copy and paste would work... but of course it didn't?
    Thank you.

    There are instructions for inserting images in [this user tip|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=121950].
    Your post should properly be in the [Feedback About Discussions|http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1076] forum, where it has been asked and answered many times. This forum is for questions about file sharing using Mac OS X 10.6 Server Snow Leopard.
    Best of luck.

  • 2 questions about this forum

    Since the forums have been reorganized (yeah, I know its been a while).  I never fail to be confused when I try to use them.
    For instance:
    1) At the top of the list of questions for adobe Bridge general discussion, I see the Heading:
    "Trending Questions"
    What on earth is that supposed to mean.  What does "trending" mean in this unusual usage?
    2) How can I get an advanced search dialog for this particular forum? When I click on the `Be sure to search the forum' link it just pops me to a new page apparently 1 layer back from this forum to Bridge with the lamest search dialog I've seen on any forum.
    I'd like to search for a particular poster, or a particular date range or etc etc.  How can I do that?

    Had to do a little research as "trending questions" was a puzzler.  You are looking at the  bridge general discussion page, and I always bring up the Bridge Forum page where trending is not there.  Think it refers to current questions.
    Some forums have a "search this forum only" box, but none has been set up here.  You can the user name and have it return posts.  If you know the subject it is still more complete search to use google.
    Back on an older thread ... You mention "Bringing up" the bridge forum on a different page than the one with that silly "Trending questions" baloney.
    I'm curious how you do that... when I find the forums, ususally from a google search with "Adobe forums" Bridge or insert another adobe product where you see "Bridge" in the string.  That always lands me at the page with "Trending Questions" and with no obvious way to get to the actual forum other than a list near the top of page that includes "Bridge: General Discussion"... ok, clicking that again brings a page with the "Trending questions" non-sense.
    At that point the only way I see to get to the actual forum is to click one of the "Trending questions", from that page you can see a link at the top that says: " Adobe Community > Bridge > Bridge General Discussion >   Discussions "
    where you can finally get to a usable forum page.
    One could, of course, book mark that... but it seems like a very unnecessary and convoluted path to find a usable forum.
    I'm guessing there is some other obvious way I'm not seeing?
