Inserted USB mem stick, system locked.

Yesterday I inserted my 128mb memory stick into my front USB ports, and the system locked up tight.  The video disappeared, the keyboard didn't respond, etc.  Anyone ever have this happen?  It only happened once, and I've inserted the memory stick since then, and it hasn't happened again.  Could it just be a glitch?  Why would this happen?   Just the other day I updated my USB drivers with the 2.0 patch from VIA, and it seemed to go just fine.   Just wondering why the system would have locked up like that.

You DIDN'T update your USB drivers. Look again at my post on your last USB thread (where I said download the VIA patch if you can't see the USB 2.0 stuff). There was nothing wrong with your actual drivers. The only fault was that the label in device manager didn't specifically say the EHC + related root hub was USB 2.0. The VIA patch fixes the screen description, not the drivers, which you only get from SP1.
Most probably the system appeared to hang because when you first inserted the stick it loaded the drivers necessary for Win XP. It should have released the OS for use again pretty quickly, but for some reason it didn't in your case. Since the drivers are only installed once, there's no reason for the problem to happen again.
With Win9x you have to manually load the drivers. With Win XP you still need drivers but don't have to manually load them because they are factory loaded on the stick and are then installed automatically when the OS first detects the stick.

  • USB Memory Stick Locks up Pismo OS 9.2.2

I recently obtained a G3 Pismo with OS 9.2.2 installed with a strange problem. As soon as I stick a USB memory stick into one of the USB ports and attempt to transfer a file of over a few MB, the whole system locks up, forcing a hard reboot. I can transfer smaller files no problem.
It's not heat-related, as I've seen the same problem when the computer has been off for several hours and is not hot on the bottom.
I've tried it with an unpowered hub with the same results.
I don't think that the stick is simply draining too much power from the slot, as I've never heard of th

OK, so you still haven't told us how much free space you have on these partitions just so we can eliminate that.
I had a friend with a 60Gb drive in his DA recently that had 1.5Gb left free that was having all sorts of problems until we deleted some files by burning them to a DVD.
Next " Me ejecting it improperly isn't the issue " .If you do eject it improperly then this may be the cause of your problems , pure and simple.
I run a Pismo, Lombard and Wallstreet on OSX and I use five or six USB sticks of various sizes on all three without any problems.
I can drag 2Gb files to and from them all to the biggest 4Gb stick without any of them locking up.
If it was just one USB stick that was causing this problem i would say just reformat it but the fact that they all do it suggests something else in your methodology.
    1) Try the second USB port.
    2) Reset pram.
    3) Check that the USB sticks are all backward compatible with USB1 - they may not be getting enough power to run properly.
    4) Try an external USB powered drive to see if this problem is replicated .
    5) Reformat one stick and then use it by dragging a few files to it and remove it " properly " just to humour me. .

I am unable to download pictures from my Sony Cybershot to my iMac, I have tried using the USB port as well as simply inserting the memory stick into the slot.  I have been able to do this in the past as recently as a few weeks ago.... Help please..

    Thanks Eric for responding.
I checked and it does not appear in the Applications folder.
I tried yesterday on an ethernet connection with a download speed of 2 Mbps but, unfortunately the connection died(It happened from the ISP end, which is out of my control) in between after which there was no trace of the download that happened for so long(till the internet connection death).
One more serious query which I am unable to understand. If the internet connection, dies in the midst of the download is in progress why is it so that the state does not persist and one has to restart the entire process again. Is there no solution for this?
I tried so many times and its the same case after some amount of download it vanishes. So many unsuccessful attempts. I am ****** off now. Is it not possible to see Mavericks? Why does different machines of Apple behave differently? Somewhere it goes smoothly and somewhere like my mine. Why did not Apple release a non apple store version? Is this not a bad sign of letting the users struggle when something is being offered for free?
The reason I asked as whether we can download the .app of Mavericks is that, there are so many applications that I have downloaded web and have installed. All that works fine. Can't we do the same here? You download a copy of Mavericks installer application and upload it for me in Google drive or like online storage places which can be downloaded and used by me? Help me understand.
    Thanks again.

  • 3 mem stick in dual mode - how high + external usb HDD boot question

Hi guys. I have 2 questions:
    1. If I put 2X512 mb Kingmax DDR 433 mem sticks in one channel and the 1 gb stick in another one will I be able to run mem clock on 209 MHz in dual channel mode (because of memory controller limitations)? Is there any chance to break 200 fsb limit with this memory combination.
    2. I have Philips SPD 5100CC external USB HDD. Last night I tried to install windows xp on it but after first reboot I am getting the messsage Windows could not boot ........windows root\system32\hal.dll is missing or corrupted. I have latest bios and the drive is listed in boot menu under Hard Drive option and so is my USB flash drive. I boot without any problem from USB flash. Is this related with the mobo or external HDD encosure?

well, one thing is sure, you won't get dual channel if you use 3 memory sticks. the problem is that sometimes you cannot even boot with 3 modules installed. check the mobo manual on the possible memory modules configurations

  • HT5639 Can I use usb internet sticks and/ or printers which don't speak apple with boot camp and win 7/ 8?

    Hello all,
As a reference point for my technological skills, I work in international development and in timber framed building construction and repair. Beyond Ford full- size pick-ups pre 1993, I mostly employ 19th century systems.
This MacBook Pro is marvelous, but won't read or accept some older printers and usb internet sticks. There is also a problem with windows 8 on many of these international and older/ cheaper US devices. Will a MacBook Pro be able to communicate with them in windows 7 running on Boot Camp, or on any of the other Windows on Mac platforms? Does one work better with old stuff than another? Are any of them simpler/ more intuitive to use than others?  Any informtion or suggestions, no matter how basic would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Rob

I have tried it with all 3 options. I tried the first two options with the printer plugged into port 1 on the adapter and the third option with the printer plugged into port 2. This means that I may have effectively installed all 3 options/scripts. Do I need to throw them away and start again?
Running the Choose Serial Port script writes a file that is used in processing print jobs. If you run the script a second time, it will replace the existing file with a new file.
Do I also need to configure these ports in the network settings under System Preferences?
    No.
I notice too that no 'location' is given for the Stylewriter II, whereas a location is given for my other (Lexmark) printer, which is connected to the G5 iMac directly via a USB cable.
That is of no consequence. Use of the Location field is optional.
I would suggest you proceed as follows:
    1. Go to the /Library/Receipts folder at the root of your hard drive. Delete the item Foomatic for StyleWriter.pkg.
    2. Start the installation over from the beginning. Install the Foomatic for StyleWriter software.
    3. Run the Choose Serial Port for StyleWriter script. Upon further reflection of your possible use of two Keyspan adapters, I would suggest you choose the serial port with the format USA28X...P1.1 rather than KeySerial1.
    4. Run the Add StyleWriter to Printer List.
Try printing a document. If it still does not work, download a troubleshooting script from my website http://webpages.charter.net/mbroughtn/downloads/Test7Stylewriter.command.zip Run the script. Copy and paste the contents of the Terminal window in a reply. That should point to what is going wrong.

  • Verify Disk results, confusing.. Can they be the cause of system lock ups?

I have been experiencing strange freezes on my Mac Pro 2008 system.
My boot disk is a 50% full 128GB SSD from Crucial and is running beautifully fast however for the past couple of weeks my system often freezes for anything from 3 seconds to 30 seconds and then the Finder restarts.
After the Finder restarts everything continues running smoothly. As if nothing ever happend, no error reports, no apps crashed, nothing.
I have verified disk permissions and verified the disk itself in Disk Utility but I am not quite sure what these results mean and if they could be the cause of these random lock ups.
    here are the results:
    Verify permissions for “Boot Disk”
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.

The volume Boot Disk was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk.
I would really appreciate it if someone that knows their way around this stuff could help me troubleshoot this.
As for the problem of the system locking up it does not happen in the same application consistently.
Often it happens in Firefox but it could equally often happen when working in Photoshop, browsing files in the Finder or trying to access the Spotlight search via the keyboard shortcut.
When the system locks up I get the spinning beach ball and I can still move the mouse and click and even still access CMD+TAB app switcher, switch spaces and all those things, just applications become non responsive.
If you need any more details please let me know.
    Thanks for reading,
    Jannis

These are innocuous errors that you may safely ignore. However the disk error is a problem. Do the following:
    Repairing the Hard Drive
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • How do I create multiple live USBs of Operating systems to boot from on one flashdrive?

How do I create multiple live USBs of Operating systems to boot from on one flashdrive?
I am attempting to create multiple live USBs within one flashdrive so that i can boot various operating systems without having to buy multiple USb sticks. I am using a Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8 Operating System currently. I am using the Terminal provided by the OS.
I would like to try Debian, Kali, Precise Puppy, and Sabayon- with one space left empty for whatever Linux OS I would like to try next. I have partitioned an 8GB flashdrive into the following sections:
name of intended OS,     space allocated for it:
    1)Debian ........................1.32 GB
    2)Kali..............................2.61GB
    3)Precise Puppy..............163.7MB
    4)Sabayon.......................1.77GB
    5)TBD..............................2.14GB
I have figured out how to change the .iso files of the operating systems into .img files with the following commands:
    hdiutil convert -format UDRW /path/to/input.iso -o /path/to/output.img
a .img.dmg file is created, this is corrected in the next line of code *please note: I am a a very beginner at programming, and would greatly appreciate any help. Thank you!
    mv /path/to/output/file.img{.dmg,}
This is where I started to get confused:
I entered diskutil list to find the location of the partitions on my flashdrive, and this is the relevant section:
    /dev/disk1
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:     FDisk_partition_scheme                        *8.0 GB     disk1

       5:                 DOS_FAT_32 TBD                     2.1 GB     disk1s6
This is the code I attempted to use and the subsequent result:

*at this point I went to the Disk Utility GUi and unmounted only the DEBIAN partition, now back to the terminal*

I would like to know the answer to this as well.  I tried renaming the 3D version by adding 3D after it, but it still not a separate movie in iTunes.
It's putting them in the same folder.

I was updating my iPhone 4S to the iOS 7 system. During update my phone froze. It's stuck on insert USB cable connect to itunes screen. I've already tried turning my phone off holding Home key while inserting my cord into phone and nothing worked. I've tried DFU mode and that wont work either. What the heck do I do now? • After installing Snow Leopard I can no longer "save photos on computer" after inserting a memory stick to an HP Photosmart C5180 All in 1                                                                                           Photosmart C5180 All in one

    Hello,
When I insert a memory stick into my HP Photosmart C5180 All in one and I try to "save photos on computer" the printer reads: "You need to install device software". This all started happening after I installed Snow Leopard on my Mac 10.6.8. Can someone please advise on what I need to do?

Typically it's a good idea to uninstall any devices attached to the Mac before doing an upgrade.  This prevents problems that can be caused by the upgrade.  Below are the instructions for uinstalling and reinstalling the printer.  I'm also going to include a link to the full feature software and drivers for the printer.  Let me know what happens.

  • Auto Start Up when installing a usb memory stick into a usb port on the computer

Whenever I install a usb memory stick into my computer the Photoshop Album Starter Edition program begins running. How do I stop this from happening?

    Phil,
I am not running the Starter Edition, but actually another version. However, since no one else has responded I will post what I think will work for the Starter Edition.
Look in your System Tray at the bottom right of your monitor. You should see a Camera icon that when you move near it will say Adobe Photo Downloader. Right click on the camera icon and you will probably have a choice of Disable - click on it.

  • HP530 not hibernating when USB WLAN stick plugged in, works unplugged.

This problem came up when the laptop's builtin wlan card didn't connect to our wlan because of the 13 byte key (5 byte key worked fine but my dad wants to use the 13 byte key). I tried using an external USB wlan stick which connected fine to our network. However hibernating doesn't work when the stick is plugged in. I have tried s2disk and pm-hibernate, both fail. I have also tried two different wlan sticks, hibernation fails with both.

    A-Link WL64USB:
    Bus 001 Device 006: ID 0ace:1215 ZyDAS WLA-54L WiFi
Here is how the hibernation fails. Screen goes black except a white cursor blinking in the corner. The login prompts in consoles remain active and I can change consoles with CTRL-ALT-F1 etc. Login prompts don't take keystrokes though.
However, hibernation does work when the sticks are not connected.
This isn't a really big problem but trying to remember plugging/unplugging the stick is quite annoying.
Is there any way to fix this?
P.S. I will post more after I get the logs and some other info.

  • Problems reading USB memory sticks with OS 10.9

Cannot read USB memory sticks with current version of OS 10.9.1 that I previously read without any problem.  What gives?  Any way to fix this problem?  I have lots of work and other material saved on the memory sticks that I need access to this quarter.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

  • Could you please help me connect my Telstra usb internet stick to my new Macbook Air? This is my first Mac and I am really struggling!

    Hi,
I just brought my first Mac at Christmas and I am trying to connect my Telstra usb internet stick to it.
The Mac recognises the internet stick and the widget pops up for the stcik but then asks me to register the internet stick with this computer. I am provided with a a description on how to do this (go to Open Network Preferences > a new pop up will say New System/internet found etc), but the "new system/internet pop up never appears, so I can click on the "directIP" showing on the left hand sinde of the Open Network Preferences windon, but then I dont know where to go from there.
Could anyone help me with a step by step (aka lamens description) of how to fix this?
    Thank you very much!

Hey there, my experience with the Telstra USB internet dongles is a little different, don't think you need to fuss with settings and all that, it's basically designed to plug and play almost.
When you plug it in, it should prompt you to install the Telstra utility. Have you done this? You will know because in your 'Applications' you will see a Telstra icon. You need to use this utility to connecto the internet.
So, if you have this, simply double click it and when the utility opens, click 'Connect' and as long as the dongle can detect the network it will connect. There should not be any other configuration required.
If that utility is not there, then install it. When you plug in the dongle, you will see it appear as a drive, should be able to just double click it and then go through the installation process.
Failing all that, head into a telstra store and the guys there will sort it out for you quite quickly.

    Hi,
At first I had Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I prepared a USB Boot-Stick for OS X Yosemite by following the instructions on a website.
I deleted my Harddrive and then tried to install Yosemite from the USB-Stick.
Unfortunately it gives me this error message (I'm german so my translation might not be fully correct):
    -     OS X could not be installed on your Computer.
The process could not be finished. Undefined error: 0
Close the installation program to restart your Computer and try again.
So now I don't know what to do as I don't have a Snow Leopard Installation CD.
I have a Time Machine backup if that's of any help.
    Please help me fix this.

Since you no longer have a Snow Leopard DVD, restore your entire system by following these instructions:
OS X Yosemite: Revert to a previous OS X version
Then, install Yosemite from the App Store.
The instructions you found on a website are probably wrong. If you want to retain the Yosemite installer program for future use, copy the downloaded "Install OS X Yosemite" file prior to the installation. You may then use it to install Yosemite on as many Macs as you wish.

  • Token and smart card reader are not detected on Mavericks if not plugged on a USB port during system boot

Well, both token and smart card reader are not detected on OS X 10.9 if not plugged on a USB port during system boot. So, if I am already working within the system and need to use my certificates I have to plug the token or smart card reader on a USB port and restart Mavericks.
Token is a GD Starsign and Smart Card Reader is a SCR3310 v2.
    Thoughts?

SCS is a very good app, since I've read that Apple has discontinued support for PC/SC interfaces after the release of Mountain Lion.
(My previous installation was a Mavericks upgrade from Lion)
However, I don't know what and how to debug using Smart Card Services. Do you know any commands to use?
Apparently, the SC reader reports no issues: the LED is blinking blue when no smart card is present and becomes fixed blue when a smart card is inserted – according to the manuals, this shows that there is correct communication between the OS and the CCID reader.
I don't know what to do; I'm beginning to hypothesize it's a digital signer issue. In fact, my smart card only supports one application called File Protector (by Actalis) to officially sign digital documents. This application seems to have major difficulties in identifying the miniLector EVO.
The generic and ambiguous internal error comes when I try to manually identify the peripheral.
Athena CNS is one of the Italian smart cards and is automatically recognized and configured (so it's correct – no doubts about this), while "ACS ACR 38U-CCID 00 00" seems to be the real name of the miniLector.
(I'm assuming this because System Information also returns that the real manufacturer is ACS... bit4id is a re-brander)
However, when I click on it and then tap OK, it returns internal error.
As first attempt, I would try to completely erase&clean File Protector files to try a reinstall. Then, if this still doesn't work, I'd debug using the terminal.
    So:
    - Do you know any applications to 100% clean files created by an installer?
    - Do you have in mind any solutions that I might have forgotten?
Thanks in advance from an OS X fan!
