Inserting a Clip w/out Moving Other Layers

Let's say I want to insert video only to the Video 1 layer and have it move that layer's content to allow for the insert, but keep the other video and audio layers the same. Is there a way to do that? What I have been doing which is a pain is to heighlight all the clips on video 1, move them, drag the new clip in, then heighlight the clips in video 1 again and move them back. There has to be an easier way.
Thx for the help!

  • Exporting Clip In/Out (CS6)

    Hi,
Wondering if anyone else is having similiar issue as I am. It's not the end of the world but I do think it's some type of bug issue with CS6 (or maybe I'm doing something wrong).
Without boring you with too many details, part of my workflow includes using Premiere to not only create discs and final products for clients, but also supplying them with a data file copy of their content. When I start a project I set in and out points for my clips and then export the raw clips as compressed files (usually .mov or .mp4). When exporting from CS6 it seems easy enough, I simply select the clip I want to export, choose my export settings and set the "source range" to "clip in/out". Simply enough.
Only one problem, even though the clip in/out visibly changes in the clip window and everything looks like it should work, the exported files never have the in/out points. The resultant exported file is always simply the full clip, as if I never set the source range to clip in/out. Other than that the files look fine and everything else is great.
As a work around I've been simply putting the clips into their own sequences and obviously that solves the problem. I'm just curious if anyone knows the story on this issue. It's not really a big deal, solving the issue would just save me a step and it seems like it's broken at the moment so I thought I would mention it.
I don't think my system and so forth plays a big role in this issue as it's simply a basic function of Premiere but I'm on a MacPro OSX 10.6 with CS6 from Creative Cloud. I've experienced this issue with a variety of different source material and export settings and it's the same problem across the board.
    Thanks

Ok, took the same small clip and exported it twice (with my clip in/out set in Premiere and with "clip in/out" selected in the "source frame" in the export settings). Exported via queue into AME, the exported file did not have my in/out points it was merely the full clip that I had selected. Exported via Premiere (clicked Export instead of Queue), viola the exported file had the in/out points correct.
It would appear, based on this small test, that the reason my exported clips have been ignoring the in/out points has to do with going from Premiere into AME. Anyone else care to test this theory and tell me if they experience the same issue?

Your file is most likely toast, but still:

  • Inserting a clip between two clips

I'm trying to insert a clip between two clips yet still having everything from all V/A 1,2,3,4,etc. layers to move along with whatever clip is moved down the line. Everyone keep saying: Use the ctrl key! but all that does is indeed move some of it down but it cuts bits of the video in the process. I'm not sure how to solve this. I simply want to drag and drop an item between two clips and not cut or mess up any additional V layers.

You can load a title into the Source Monitor by dragging it there from the Project Panel. But you can also use the insert command directly from the Project panel, via either the context menu or the same shortcut.
Be aware that if the sequence has In/Out points set, then the Insert & Overwrite commands will insert the selected source into that range. This is known as 3-point or 4-point editing (depending on whether you have both in & out points set in both the source and the sequence). If In/Out points are not set in the sequence, then the source is inserted at the playhead's position in the Timeline.
Also, source patching controls which tracks the clip is placed on. If you're not familiar with source patching, this tutorial video is worth watching.

  • How do I insert a clip into my Primary Storyline?  Every time I try to insert a clip the way instructions say, it goes into the title storyline (at top) instead.

I have been unable to find out how to select the storyline where I want a clip inserted.  Every time I try to insert a clip at the beginning of my project, it goes into the Title Storyline, not my primary one.

What does the instruction say? Are you pressing the Insert button? Are you using the W key? Are you tryin to drag into the storyline?
If you have a secondary storyline, make sure it's not selected when you do the edit.

  • How do you filter out moving objects in a movie?

    Hello!
I'v searched the internet for solutions to this but I cann't find any.
Im prittie new and I need to make a house on fire while two guys (one is me)
will be walking away from it, towards the camera.
I want to filter out these two guys and only apply fire and flames to the house itself!
To do this I used Time Diffrence and tried to isolate the guy using Fast Blur and Luma Key
but Im prittie lost.. Nothing works and I really need guidence
Do you know a trick to use?
I cant do greenscreening as the green background would cost a fortune..
But isn't there anyway to filter out moving objects?

I'm not sure that you totally get the process. This kind of shot requires at least 3 elements or plates. These three plates become three layers in After Effects. The bottom layer would be the Background Plate which is a shot of the house without any actors in the shot. The next plate would be the Effect Plate or Fire Plate which could be any shot you can get or generate through plug-ins of flames. The top layer would be your Foreground Plate or your two actors.
Now that you know what you need you can plan your shoot. The background plate is easy. Just set the camera on a tripod and lock it off. NO zooming. No panning, No change of focus. The foreground plate is also easy. You don't have to green screen the entire set, all you need to do is to put a green screen behind your actors. I do this kind of thing all the time using a 6' X 6' (sometimes smaller) green screen (or blue or red or purple) made of fabric and stretched over a frame that I made from 1/2" EMT electrical conduit and 4 90º elbow connectors for less than $20 at Home Depot or Lowes. You get a couple of assistants to walk behind your actors holding the green screen behind them. If you need to include their feet they can be easily rotoscoped out later and you can garbage matte everything else. If it's impossible to green screen the shot then you are stuck with roto, but that's much easier in CS5 using the roto brush. If you use your show with the actors as the background plate roto is even easier because you can hide a multitude of sins by simply feathering the roto and letting the fire light wrap around the actors a bit.
The fire plate can be purchased footage, or you could shoot a real fire against a black background, or you could create the flames using AE or even a 3D app like Blender (free) or a bunch of other apps.
Making the shot look real requires a few tricks once you have your clean plates. Fire creates light so you've got to add lighting effects to the background plate to sell the fire. You've also got to wrap light around your actors. Look for tutorials on light wrap for this. You can really help sell the effect if you place some flickering light sources behind and to the side of your actors when you shoot the foreground (actors) plate.
Once you get a handle on these techniques it's fairly easy to make the transition to pulling of this kind of a shot with a hand held camera (now you have to learn motion tracking). On a project I recently completed we had to put a fire in a prop fireplace while actors moved around bringing milk and cookies for Santa. It was all roto and the fire was shot at night with nothing more than a black cloth (Duvetyne) behind the fireplace grate. The final composite was 10 layers and was so totally believable that no one questions the shot.
The layers were from top to bottom, reflection in grandmas glasses, light wrap, actors (roto of original background plate), fire flicker layer, color mask layer (more orange around fire, fire glow layer, fire layer in Add mode, second fire layer in screen mode, third fire layer Luma keyed, and finally the original plate which contained all the actors, carefully lit with flickering firelight simulated by dangling a stick with fabric cut into 1/2 inch wide strips about one foot long in front of a orange gelled light behind and to the right of  the actors.
    If I get a chance I'll post a screenshot.

  • Moving text entered into a PDF without moving other objects

Sometimes, I add text to a pdf through the following:
    -         Click Tools to the top right of Acrobat, beneath the X.
    -         Under Content | Edit Text & Objects, select Edit Document Text.
    -         Hold down ctrl before you place the cursor on the pdf.
Often, the text is not placed in the correct spot. To move it, I go to Tools | Content | Edit Object and then select the text and move it. However, this often causes other text in the document to shift along with the text that I entered. It seems somehow the text I entered gets linked to other text and I can either move all or none of it. How can I get only the text that I just entered to shift without getting other text to shift with it?

Test Screen Name: I think Add or Edit Text Box might be more practical than Edit Document Text if I need to move the text after I add it. With Add or Edit Text Box, moving the text box does not cause other elements to move, which is unlike what happens when I add text via Edit Document Text.
I think the PDF creator needs to allow the option for users to use the Forms Tool. This PDF does not have form fields. As for adding text via Comments, Add stick note creates a conspicuous text box that I want to avoid, as does Insert text under Comment | Annotations.
So Add or Edit Text Box appears to be the best option.
I believe the sender expects me to print this PDF, handwrite my entries and then scan and email it back to him. But I am trying to find ways to save time, paper and ink by adding text without printing this PDF and the many other PDFs that I must routinely fill out.

  • Inserting video clip and have both audios at once

Hi everyone, hopefully somone can help answer my question.  My friend has a video blog and the person who used to do all of his technical stuff is no longer with him, so he's trying to figure it all out, and I figured I'd try to help him.
In iMovie, does anyone know how to insert a video clip into the main video clip and have the inserted video being shown on the screen but the audio of both videos playing at the same time, with no break in continuity of the main video's audio?  Then, how to transition from the inserted video with both audios playing at the same time back to just the main video, again with no breaks in audio continuity?  I know it's possible on FinalCut Pro, because that is what his tech person used, but for some reason that program freezes my friend's computer, so he's stuck with iMovie for now.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!

Thanks for your reply devbear11.  You ALMOST got what I was asking for.  I'm sorry if my wording is confusing, lol.  Everything you said is great, EXCEPT that  I want to KEEP the audio on the inserted video in ADDITION to the audio on the original clip.  So to break it down....
    - Main video clip is playing.
    - Segue into the inserted video clip.  Have the screen be showing the inserted video clip and have it be playing it's own audio, WITHOUT interrupting the audio of the original/main video.
    - Inserted video clip plays on the screen and you hear both the audio of the inserted video clip in addition to whatever my friend is saying on the main audio....To give you an example, my friend blogs about figure skating.  So he will be discussing a competition and the screen is showing him at his desk talking about the different skaters.  While he is discussing a certain skater, he may input a clip of their performance and you will see and hear them skating to their music, but still be able to hear him discussing it uninterrupted in the background.
    - Once the inserted clip ends, the video switches back to my friend at his desk, with his commentary uninterrupted.
    Am I making sense? lol

  • Inserting video clips

My group are fairly new ussers of Vis. Com.  Today we inserted video clips into a program and immediate were given the message that the program was not responding and would close.  Three hours later we tried to open that program and review it to be given the same message.  Does processing a video clip need this much time or have we overlooked some detail?

Actually, no, that's not how I did it . . . I used the advanced tools/replace clip feature.  It took me a while to figure out though, it's not explained clearly in the app help, but you have to separate longer clips to isolate the section you want to replace.  Then choose a section from the  replacement clip that's  the same  length, with accurate in and out points so it lines up with the existing audio track (if that's a factor)... sometimes needs some trial and error to make it work, but the results are exactly what I'm looking for.  Thanks for the reply, the 'cutaway clip' thing looks good too!

  • Beginner Question - Inserting a Clip

I just started using iMovie HD (5.x) after my old version of Premiere suddenly quit working. I have a bunch of still images that I want to sync to a voiceover soundtrack. I put the entire sound track in and a few clips synced to the soundtrack while I'm waiting for the rest of the images. Now I have the other images and I can't seem to insert them into the timeline. If I drag a still image clip into the timeline, everything else after it moves to the right. I left gaps of just the right size to insert these clips, and even though their duration is shorter than the gaps, they still moves everything after to the right. I can find no mention of this anywhere in the help and I've tried every possible key combination while dragging. Is there any way to insert a clip into a gap in the timeline without moving everything in the timeline after it? Or do I have to remove everything after it and only work forward in time (like an old linear editing system)?
Oh, and this is unrelated, but there is no simple wipe transition?!?

    Klaus1 wrote:
It is supposed to work like that. You don't have to create a gap first, just drop them between two clips.
I have gaps because I only had some of the images I needed, and I didn't want to wait until I had all of them to start putting the movie together. So I put the images I had where they go on the timeline, leaving gaps to insert the others later. Just like with any other non-linear video editing software I've ever used. So now it looks like I've wasted hours getting the images lined up with the voiceover, and now I have to go back and delete everything and start over with just the audio track. I guess iMovie just wasn't made for much beyond the simplest of editing.

    Hi eneighbor
Yes, selecting "move to trash" from within FCPX will free up disk space.
I "Move Project To Trash" first.
Then "Move Event To Trash" secondly.
To totally free up disk space, you will of course need to empty out your trash as you would per any other unwanted file you've sent to the trash can.

  • My mac air says hard drive full and 90% is full of 'other' which I cant work out what 'other' is as i Have transferred most to my external hard drive

My mac air says hard drive full and 90% is full of 'other' which I cant work out what 'other' is as i Have transferred most to my external hard drive.
Do you know how I can tell how large each file is taking up and what my 'other' category could be?
    thanks

Initial easy steps to gain disk space:
    - Delete all files in the Downloads folder.
      Empty the Trash.
    - Start iPhoto.
      Empty its trash.
      Restart.
    Backup:
Run a Time Machine (or other) backup since you are about to delete and move files and you may need to recover from any inadvertent mistakes or decisions.  You will need one external hard drive for your Time Machine (or other) backup and a second if you plan to offload some files.  (See suggestions for where to purchase hard drives at the end of this message.)

    Deleting files:
Then use the free application OmniDiskSweeper http://www.omnigroup.com/more to explore your volume in descending order by size so you can attack the problem from the top down, deleting the largest unwanted files first.  Delete with caution and do not delete any system files.  Remember to empty the trash after trashing the files.
Additional reference on freeing disk space:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/DiskSpace.html
    Offloading files:
Consider moving some of the no-often-used large files or directories to an external disk.  Use ODS again to find them.  This will be at least your second hard drive.  Your first one(s) is/are for your Time Machine (or other) backup(s).  Do not offload files onto a Time Machine disk.
Format the second drive as Mac OS Extended (journaled).  Using OWS to find large files/folders and copy them from the system drive to the external hard drive and delete them from your internal drive.
Then  > System Preferences > Time Machine > Options… > Remove the offload HD name from the exclusions list.
Now both your system disk and your external offload disk will be backed up onto your Time Machine disk.

  • Inserting a clip at the beginning of a edited string of clips?

I have five clips edited together. I need to put one more clip at the beginning of the string. Is there a way to move an entire string of clips forward all at once so that I can slip the clip in? Hope this makes sense?

What CC and Ann recommended is right on the money for your immediate goal of inserting a clip before clips that are already in the timeline. But there will be other occasions when you want to select multiple track items. There are several ways to do so:
To select all track items before or after a given point, select the Track Select Backward or Track Select Forward tool and click the timeline. Those tools select clips on all tracks; if you want to isolate a single track, hold SHIFT while clicking.
With the Selection tool active [V]: click a blank spot in the timeline and drag across the desired clips. This is called "marquee selection." By the way, if you do this with the Ripple Edit or Rolling Edit tool active, the edit points between clips will be selected rather than the clips themselves.
Also with the Selection tool, shift-click the track items. This is the best method when the clips you want select are intermixed with others that you want to leave unselected.

I am in the process of preparing to test a sample from your brand and model camera in my Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1 on Windows 7 64 bit. I will have the results probably tomorrow morning.
For now I just want to put you through the drill that I do for anyone who says he/she is using Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1.
    1. Are you working from the 8.0/8.0.1 Update of the program?
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4653
    2. Do you have the automatic Background Rendering and AutoAnalyzer features turned OFF.
For Background Rendering option. See Edit Menu/Preferences/General.
For AutoAnalyzer option. Click on Organizer in the row below the blue active Organize header in order to open the Elements Organizer. In the Elements Organizer workspace, go to Edit Menu/Preferences/AutoAnalyzer Options and disable all the AutoAnalzyer options. To return to the Premiere Elements workspace from the Elements Organizer workspace, in the Elements Organizer workspace, go to File Menu/Exit.
Is your computer optimized in spite of the fact that  you have a high end laptop? I presumed so but always go to verify, no pile ups of preview files, conformed video and audio files et al.
Looking at the properties of your source media, I see:
    video compression = MPEG1
    audio compression = MPEG-Layer1 (.mp2)
    Frame Size = 640 x 480 (4:3)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio = 1.0
Frame Rate = 30 progressive frames per second
With properties like those you are sure to get a red line over that content since there is no project preset with that description.
But, your choice of the default NTSC DV Standard would have been mine also.
I am heading to try to get a quick look at the behavior of the sample video here in my Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1.
    To be continued.

  • Photoshop 3d obj interacting strangely with other layers

    After Effects and Photoshop CS5.
I have an imported photoshop 3d object which on its own behaves as it should.
But, when I place it in front of other layers (2d in 3d space) I can see the other layers through the photoshop 3d layer. They are all behaving in space as they should, apart from the fact that the photoshop layer seems to be made of glass (which it isn't).
I can't for the life of me work out what I am doing wrong.
Apart from this, I can't get shadows to work in this comp, where in another comp which is exactly the same apart from the imported PS 3d object, they are working fine. (If I hide the PS 3d object, shadows and lighting work fine with the rest of the objects)
Or is all of this impossible because I'm using a PS 3d object?
I would be grateful for any ideas, because I am totally stumped.

Well, you completely misunderstand how this works, I'm afraid. PS Live 3D is merely an intra-layer effect and does not in any way interact with AE's own 3D beyond responding to the camera. That's no differtent than using 3D-ish effects like Trapcode Particular - the effect may look 3D, but is applied to a 2D layer. And that also explains all your otehr issues - any form of 2D layer inbetween 3D layers breaks 3D rendering order. You need to re-structure your project by splicing the stuff to separate comps and cross-linking the cameras to get the illusion.
