Inserting arrows into Imovie '11

Hi
I need to insert an arrow into a movie to highlight a certain point. Posts in Imovie '10 tell you how to do this very easily, this however does not work for Imovie'11. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This is the iOS iMovie forum.
You need to go to the iMovie Mac forum.
But you should check your export settings.
The preview that you see on the edit window is a preview, and not meant to be the final quality.
Also if you are editing an SD project it will resize to SD resolution.
If you're losing bit depth then look at what quality you are editing at.
Video is not 48 bit, and will never look as good as a full resolution photo still.

Im trying to place an arrow into iMovie, but picture in picture doesn't appear, replace or insert comes up instead? Im trying to make a highlight video and I cant place an arrow into picture on picture, I used to be able to untill I updated my IOS.
Any help would be great! thanks.

Make sure that you have enabled (checked) Advanced Tools in the General tab under the iMovie menu item "iMovie>Preferences".
Also, a Picture-in-Picture (PIP) can be inserted only into clips in a project - not clips in an Event.

  • Trouble inserting photos into iMovie

I am trying to import some photos into iMovie that I copied from a website. When I try to insert them from a file on my desktop, where I saved them, I only get a portion of the photo. I went back to the folder and opened each picture outside of iMovie and they are complete pictures of high resolution. When I insert them, they turn out to be a part of the photo in low resolution. Ideas?

You might also try dragging the folder into iphoto and see if they will import there. Then access them from within imovie. If iphoto won't see them then you will need to convert them like was already suggested.

  • How to put a moving arrow into iMovie '11

I am trying to make a highlight tape for a lacrosse player and they requested that I put an arrow over them so coaches can focus on them, but all of the tutorials I have found are for iMovie 09 and I have 11, which will not let me put a picture on a picture. Please help as soon as possible!!!

The advice, I give in this user-tip
How to create a pointer or a custom title
works in iM09 as in iM11.
… but a moving arrow is impossible in iMovie, due to lack of key-framing pic-in-pics.
Consider usage of more elaborated tools, such FCPX.
Or, Motion5 as 'effects machine' - works as a standalone, so, can be used in conjunction with iMovie.
The latest Adobe Premiere/elements (70-100$) offers a 'tracking-feature', to apply arrows or titles to moving objects. 'Tracking' allows a lot of fun stuff, example made in Motion5: http://youtu.be/ac0QyDJmTjE
Fingers crossed, after 4y of development, iMovie14 will offer a similiar effect…

  • Cannot insert photos into iMovie project

Suddenly I am unable to drag/drop photos from the iPhoto window in iMovie into my current project.
I click on the Photo button and thumbnails of my photos appear. I click on a photo (it is highlighted in blue) and drag it to the desired location within my project. When I drop it between clips (the green "Add" button appears) it just doesn't appear in the project.
I have tried several times to drag/drop the photos (from within iMovie and from an opened Finder window), restarted iMovie and restarted my computer but I still cannot add photos to my project.
Any suggestions? Is it the software or my computer?

Chic, Welcome to the discussion area!
I'm not sure why you posted in this area since your question has nothing to do with wireless networking nor the AirPort Express (AX).
I suggest that you go to the appropriate iMovie discussion area and post your question there.

  • Inserting Arrows In Video

I'm trying to insert arrows into a football highlight video.  (1) I want them to point to a player for 1 second before the play starts, let the play run, and do the same for all subsequent plays.  Can someone outline the steps or point me to a tutorial for this?  (2) Once done how do I export the video for optimal display on a CD and for the Internet?
    Thanks in advance

    Welcome to the forum.
Make a Title and then choose a font, like Webdings, which has a ton of arrows. Place that Title on a Video Track above the Clip of the players, and then you can animate it with the fixed Effects>Motion>Position and possibly Motion>Rotation.
One can also create the Title in PS/PSE, and use the included Smart Shapes for arrows, then do any necessary animation, as above.
    Good luck,

    option A bars l/r
    option B cat-off
example #2: a wiiiide screen pic in a 16:9 screen
    option A bars t/b
    option B catcut off
and you don't want kitty look like that:
(1:1 aspect ratio distorted to make fit onto a 16:9 screen)

  • How do I insert a screenshot into iMovie

I'm currently working on a youtube video.
I've taken the screenshots I need for my video, and I need to insert them somehow into iMovie.
iMovie is the program I am going to use to make my video, since it has lots of different resources to use, effects, titles, it's amazing!
It's for a virtual world I play (I'm 9.) ourWorld. I'm making Safe & Sound by Taylor Swift.
    Can anyone help me?
I  need to insert the screenshots I took on my Mac into iMovie to make this video everyone is waiting for!
    Thank you!

There are 3 ways to do it.
    1) Drag the screen shots into iPhoto and then restart iMovie. You can drag them in from the Photo Browser.
    2) If you have Aperture, drag the shots into Aperture and then restart iMovie. You can drag them in from the Photo Browser.
    3) Put the screenshots in a Finder folder. You can drag from the Finder into your iMovie Project. If you do it this way, make sure it is in a folder that you will not move for as long as you want to edit this movie.
Once they are in iMovie, use the Rotate, Crop, Ken Burns Tool to set them to FIT. This will let you see the entire screen shot in your movie.

  • Using iMovie 11 and can't insert photos into story line?

I just got IMovie 11 and the browsers won't highlight when trying to create a movie.  I can't insert photos into the storyline

If I had to guess, and this merely based on reading iMovie Discussion Group threads, I would say sometimes Themes/Trailers/Animated Titles have problems. Not to say they cannot be used, but they can be the source of crashes and other bad behavior if something gets corrupted in them. Animated titles (in a regular iMovie Project) can cause instability and crashes. So I would say, some of those Themes may not be reliable and have pieces or parts built into the template that are causing this issue.
If you wanted to try doing a bit of preventive maintenance try this:
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility and launch this program
Click on the Repair button under Disk Permissions and let it run until it finishes. Reboot the Mac, and open iMovie see if you get any different behavior out of iMovie with one of those failed Project Theme movies if you have one still available to open and look at. I won't say this is going to fix it, but it's sometimes can help. Also there's an iMovie preferences file that can get corrupted and lead to problems. To find the iMovie prefs:
Go to the Desktop look for the Go Menu at the top menu bar. Hold down the Option key and click on the Go menu. Click on Library > Preferences.
In the list of files there are: com.apple.iMovieApp.plist and also com.apple.iApps.plist
Drag both of those to the trash and relaunch iMovie. See if that preference file deletion helps.

  • Inserting MPG-2 QuickTime movie into iMovie '08

I am trying to put together a school project involving multiple movie clips. The clips were originally downloaded to a Dell laptop, using windows media player. They were then converted to QuickTime files. When I tried to open them on my computer, QuickTime would not open them. I downloaded the upgrade to QuickTime allowing the viewing of MPG-2 files, which enabled me to open the movie clips; however, I still cannot import then into iMovie. Is there any way that I can convert the clips to another format which would allow me to add them to an iMovie file?

    Hi
As I get it - There is no free way to do this.
    You need
    • MPEG Streamclip (free on the net)
    • Apple QT mpeg2-component about $20-30
Then convert Your mpg2 movies to StreamingDV and import this.

  • Unable to import video from camcorder into iMovie HD

I am using a Mac mini PowerPC G4 (1.5). I recently bought a Sony Handycam DCR-DVD 106E camcorder that uses DVD discs. The camcorder has no Firewire (iLink) output so I have inserted the DVD into my external DVD writer/player. I can play the footage via the Mac Mini's DVD player software but I cannot import the video clips into iMovie HD.
The icons on the DVD appear to be PC files and are not compatible. Does anyone know how I can take off the footage I have shot and get it into iMovie HD, please?
My secondary thought is that maybe I need to be able to convert the footage clips into Quicktime files, maybe, but I don't know how to go about this, if, indeed, that is the solution.
    Please, please help
    regards, Huguenot

Your camcorder is incompatible with iMovie 5, which is designed to use DV streams from tape, imported via firewire.
If your camcorder uses DVD disks it likely produces files in mpeg2 format, which is the standard, compressed, final delivery format of a DVD and is not intended for further editing, and cannot be imported into iMovie 5.
I am a bit puzzled as to why you chose that camcorder!
Ideally you should take it back and exchange it for a camcorder that records onto mini DV tape and which has a firewire output.
As it is, firstly you cannot import the footage due to lack of firewire. Secondly, in order to use iMovie at all you will have to convert the mpeg2 files into a DV files which is what iMovie uses.
    For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
But any way you do it, there will be penalty in terms of quality.

How do I maintain responsive scaling on an edge animate animation when I insert it into dreamweaver? Please and thank you!

example.com is a generic http:// address to illustrate the difference between what you gave, file:/// and an actual URL address.  There are no tutorials on that site.  Sorry for the confusion.
#1 Have you procured your domain name and web hosting yet?  You'll need to do that to publish your pages online.
#2 When you sign-up for web hosting, the company will send you FTP log-in credentials to your site's web server.    You will enter this info into your DW Site Definition.  Site > New Site >  See screenshots below:
Under Servers:  Root Directory is whatever your hosting company tells you to use.  This varies by web host.  Some commonly used ones are public_html, www or htdocs.
After your site definition is set-up, hit the TEST button to confirm it's working.  If it's not connecting, go to More Options.
Go to the Files Panel (F8).  Use the UP Arrow  to PUT files to remote server.
Use the DOWN Arrow to GET files from server to your local site folder.
Post back when you have finished uploading your work to the remote server.

  • I am trying to add movies from my Panasonic lumix to I photo but they aren't showing up.  If I try to import into Imovie they also don't show up on the sd card as importable movies.  I am using I photo 9.2 on 10.6.8 and never had a problem before.

My camera can be set to record as motion JPEG or light AVCHD.  It was set for AVCHD.  Could that be affecting it?  If so, can you think of any way I can load these.  I am trying to add them to an IMovie I started from a different source.

    I had this problem.
The answer is to close iphoto (you might have to force quit iphoto if it starts automatically when you connect the camera or insert the SD card) and open imovie.
Imovie then presents an import page which easily imports the video into imovie.
It is a real bad idea to "force Quit" iPhoto - if it has any update activity going on that you interrupt you can corrupt your library an close data or even photos - Force quit should ONLY be used in an emergency where there is no other alternative and you are positive that nothing is going on in iPhoto

  • Can't find some albums when trying to insert photos into other programs

I am having trouble finding albums (and thus pictures) when trying to insert photos into a Word document or upload to mySpace/ facebook etc.
After choosing 'insert<picture<from file<pictures<iPhoto Library' , I have the option of looking into the year-month-date or by album. Since I have a better memory of the 50+ albums I have created rather than their dates, I choose "Albums". This list only contains about half of my albums (with folder icons) and it appears outdated...ie one of the albums no longer exists in iPhoto and has been changed to a folders with several albums in it.
I'm wondering why this is happening or how i can update the album list. I realize i could use the year-month-day thing but that is too frustrating.

    Hi chantreya,
iPhoto 5 now stores the Album information in a data xml file. The Albums folder within the iPhoto Library folder is no longer used. At some point, usually after a rebuild, you will no longer have that folder in the Finder.
If you need to access photos from an album it is very difficult for a third party application to navigate the iPhoto Library in order to find the photo you need. You will have to know the date of import in order to find the photo.
There are some third party applications that can read the xml file and can navigate the iPhoto library and show you the Albums. Hopefully more applications will be revised to read this file.
Until then you will have to Share/Export the photos to the desktop. You can then navigate to the desktop to use the photos (example: web uploading from online photo site)
If your application supports drag and drop, you can drag the photo from an open iPhoto Library window into your application.
For email you can also use the email icon within iPhoto to open a message with the highlighted photo attached.
You can also use spotlight to find images in an Album...
This is what I have done using Spotlight to find my images that are in iPhoto albums without opening iPhoto..
In iPhoto, select the album, then select all, go to Photos/batch change.
Change the comments to text. In the text field I put the name of the Album.
    Do this for each album.
    Close iPhoto.
Open Spotlight and put in the name of the Album ( you have to remember the names of the albums or have then written down)
In the spotlight search results. click on "show all"
Under "Images" click on the "xx more" to show all the images in the album.
Make sure you have it in icon view, the icon view box is the last one on the blue images line.
Now you can control click on the image to "reveal in finder", open in iPhoto or Mail, etc.
I am not sure if this is going to make you happy and it is a little more work, but you can find images in albums and even view them in a slideshow (by clicking the play arrow at the end of the Images highlighted blue line) using Spotlight, all without opening iPhoto.
One important thing to know is you can set up a graphic program to be an external editor (when you double click an image in the library} such as PhotoShop or PS Elements. You set up that within iPhoto Preferences. Just make sure you save the image flattened and with the same name. The edits will then be relected in iPhoto when you hit "save".
