Inserting avi in to Framemaker

Hello
When I embed an avi file in to Framemaker, it never shows up in the created pdf.
I'm just doing it via File > Import > Object... selecting Create from File, picking the file and then OK.+
Anyone any ideas?

Playing inserted avi files in Adobe Acrobat 9 or later

A user has inserted avi files into Adobe and it always worked up to version 8.1.
Any version later than that, the avi files will not play anymore.
Is there any way to make them play or will all his files need converted to another source?
Converting them all to a different format would be quite the task as there are many videos involved.

Insert avi in imovie hd 6

hello,
i am creating a wonderful dvd of my hollidays... And i would like to insert a small avi (divx) video inside it... also, i would like to insert a piece of another dvd. (these divx and dvd, i created them a long time ago, and i don't have the original dv files any more)... So, no copyright on my avi files nor on my dvd...
Do you know a way for me to insert a avi movie and a video coming from a dvd ? is there a program i could use to convert the video to a format that would be accepted in imovie hd6 ?

a well reputated "convert almost anything" tool is VisualHub
but for divx, my guess is, you need this plug-in

Urgent! How to insert into and query video from database in forms???

In forms 6i demos CD, There is a demo form ocxvideo.fmb,
but it just for video in file system.
I want to read *.avi file from file system, and insert into
database, and query from my forms.
I create table with long raw, with default forms wizard,
long raw for [image] item in forms.
I change item type to ActiveX ,and right_click mouse
==>[Insert object]==>Oracle Veideo control.
still can not insert avi data into database and query from my forms.
Please give me some advice to solve this problem?

Problems importing avi into dreamweaver

I am trying to play an avi animation in Dreamweaver but the
animation will not play.
I have tried insert/media/
flash/shockwave/applet/Plugin/activex.
None of these methods work. There doesnt seem to be an action
button for inserting avi's.
Is ther any coding I can use to import my avi into a table in
my dreamweaver page or is there another way to import an avi into
Dreamweaver.
I have also tried dragging the file onto the screen from the
site menu but error appears "fail to open document"
I have tested the avi and it plays okay in a media player

You would embed it or link to it, but honestly, if you have
access to Flash
8, I would advise converting the avi to a Flash flv ..

File path lost while importing to RoboHelp

Hi
I am using FM11 and RH10 as part of TCS4.
I have inserted an image in FrameMaker which has the file path Interactivities\First Interactivity\tab1.swf (shown in the screenshot).
When I import to RoboHelp the path is lost.
This is generally not an issue as the file gets imported and published as well.
But in my case, I have three different SWFs named, tab1.swf, tab2,swf, and tab3.swf in three folders First Interactivity, Second Interactivity, and Third Interactivity respectively. The content of all three SWF files are being called from an XML file, which has the same name of tabs.xml. Now, when we publish the RoboHelp file, since all the three SWFs get copied/published to the single folder, that throws all my calls to the XML out of gear.
So, is there a way I can retain the file path when the file is imported?

Sorry, bad choice of words there from my side.
I have a Tab interactivity in SWF fomat. The framework of this is created in Flash in which we are calling the content from XML file. Here is the screenshot of the SWF when the XML file is missing:
Now, when I place the XML file in the required folder, it looks like this:
In your case, you place the Captivate file which is not dependent on other files. That is why you get it right. It is something like inserting an image.

Generating a Book from DITA Map

Hi All,
In the DITA-FMx plugin developed by Leximation, there's a feature called Generate Book from Map. It allows me to create a FrameMaker book from a DITA map or bookmap and then do whatever I can do with any FrameMaker book, including create a PDF.
Is there anything similar in the native Adobe's DITA plugin? How can I get to a book from a DITA map/bookmap?

It's not a straight forward process, but it's doable.
You don't say what version of DITA or FrameMaker you are using, but you mention the "Adobe DITA plug-in," which hasn't been a plugin for quite a while. I only have experience with FM10 and DITA 1.2. This is what I must do to create a book to print.
For me I have one "book level" ditamap that has several submaps in it. Each submap corresponds to a chapter. The book level ditamap lacks the front matter, ToC, and IX. Those get added later.
1. From my ditamap I must choose File > Save Ditamap As..
2. In the Save as type field I choose Composite Document 10 (.fm).
With the composite .fm file, insert it into a FrameMaker book file, add any front matter (copyright, etc), add/create your ToC and IX, update/generate, and then print as you normally would.

Is it possible to set text and rotatation in stored table formats?

I have a table that is a good candidate to be a table format because it will be resued many times. The heading text will not change and some of the text is rotated, so I'd like to store that too. Is there a way to do this in FM9? Here's a sample of what I'm aiming for. Any portion (text itself or rotation style) that can be set in the table format tag would be helpful.

I'm reasobably sure that table formats can't have any text in them. Tables with formatting and canned text are one of the things I use most frequently in my Auto-Text definitions. Auto-Text is a plug-in I wrote that is useful for inserting canned items into FrameMaker documents. You can learn about it here:

You need to investigate BLOB = Binary Large Objects.
Start with Google where you will find plenty of info to start with.
Next time, you'd better mentioned the OS and Oracle version (4 digits) that you are using.

Storage of AVI files in Database

Video not available cannot find 'vids:xvids' decompressor

I am getting this message when I am trying to play a an .avi file in framemaker 7.1. (I can play a .php and .flv files without any problems.) I have been able to play this type of file before until just recently. The only thing I know is any different from the time I was ble to play it and now is that I have deleted some fonts on my system (NOT the standard windows fonts). That should not have caused this. I have downloaded the vids:xvid codec - still the same problem. What else can I do, besides converting all my .avi files? By the way I can play the .avi files outside of FrameMaker.

However there is no camera software that I am aware of. You simply connect the USB cable to the camera and copy the images to the PC. I can then double click on them in WIndows Explorer and they play fine but not in AE
However since posting this my son has found that if he does create movie in AE (something to do with creating a proxy?) it then plays OK

You have to add the ODBC library to the project--the one that has the drivers for the Access DB's. I do not know the name of the file... and this is not a programming problem, but is one that should be easily answered in the NetBeans Forums.

Edge animation not displaying in IE9

I have a simple, small edge animation implemented in my muse file and it displays fine in Firefox, but not in IE9. Any ideas?

Can we define terms so we know we're talking about the same thing? When you say "capture or insert animation" I'm a little confused about several parts of that description. Is your animation a SWF file (ShockWave Flash)? Or is it perhaps a FLV (FLash Video)? Or might it be an inserted AVI file (Windows audio-video) such as you might take from a video camera?
So I guess, first, my confusion has to do with the definition of the "animation" file, since in the strictest terms, any of those might qualify as animation, but in fact, each might be treated differently.
I am also somewhat confused by your use of the word "capture". How do you capture the animation. Are you referring to a full-motion slide within the project? Or are you using some other program to "capture" something that is animated in nature?
Jennifer, I apologize for all the questions. Perhaps someone else might read your description and know exactly what you are referencing, and if so, I encourage him to jump right in. Thanks for the additional information.

Snippets in FM10 (unstructured)

I am creating a FM10 template (unstructured). I have some standard paragraphs that the user can insert in multiple places while creating documents based on this template. Now, is it possible to create snippets of these paragraphs?
I am not keen on using variables for this, as the text I intend to reuse will have lot of formatting and may include a logo as well.
Update: I explored Text Inset option as well. Though it serves the purpose of reusing paragraphs with formatting and images, it requires me to create a new file for each (reusable) component. Is there a way I can have all the required components in one file (say MS Word doc file), and extract only a part of it as required? Also, is it is possible to map MS Word styles to FM tags while importing (similar to Robohelp)?
Please advise.

FrameMaker 11 trial version crashing on save and cross-reference insertion

Hi everyone,
I've recently started a new position. My prior background was heavily DITA, and I'd describe my FrameMaker experience as late beginner or early intermediate. The new position uses FM exclusively though, so I've been on a steep learning curve lately.
I'm using the trial version of FrameMaker 11, downloaded about two weeks ago, until the PO for my full FM 11 license is processed. I'm working in book and document files that have been upgraded, I believe, from FM 9 to FM 10 and then from FM 10 to FM 11. All of my colleagues are still using FM 10, with a mind to upgrade to FM 11 in the spring as our new budget comes through (I am, so to speak, the FM 11 guinea pig for the group).
My workstation is a brand new HP Elitebook laptop running Windows 7 64-bit (I believe our IT department downgraded it from Windows 8). Windows is fully up-to-date. My trial version of FM 11 is 11.0.1.382 and also up-to-date as of this message.
My issue: FM 11 randomly crashes several times a week, sometimes once a day or so, sometimes when I try any of the following:
Saving all files in a book (using Shift + the File menu command)
Saving individual document files (generally using the Save icon in the tool bar)
Attempting to insert a cross-reference (placing the insertion point within the document, then opening the Cross-Reference tool in the right-hand side bar)
The crash takes the appearance of FM freezing for several seconds, then the dreaded message window opening with the words "FrameMaker has detected a serious error and must quit", with columns of error codes below.
I've googled and binged and not found anything for this issue in FM 11, so I thought I'd post here. I have tried the following, based on somewhat similar discussions I've seen for crashes in earlier versions of FM)
Mif-washing the files
Working in the Structured FrameMaker interface instead of the Unstructured
Neither of these has worked. FM 11 trial continues to crash. It doesn't happen often; I'd say that I'm able to successfully able to perform the above tasks 20 times or so, with the crash on the 21st. But on a busy day, that's a few crashes a day.
To mitigate damage, I have autosave set to every two minutes and gotten in the habit of only having one or two documents open, instead of all in a book, to minimize the number of recovery files I need to process.
After one of the initial crashes, I did as Adobe asked and forwarded the crash report to them for troubleshooting.
My colleagues are watching all this very closely, and my troubles might influence our decision to upgrade from FM 10 to FM 11. So any insight into this issue would be appreciated!

The multitude of unesolved x-refs may due to the font issues when updating the book. During an update, if the files aren't open, FM tries to open them in the background but if it encounters an error like a missing font, it skips the file and then any x-refs to that file are unresolved. This can cascade to make things look really worse than they are.
What is your default printer when you start FM? It should be the Adobe PDF prnter instance. If not, then you might want to insatll the Sundorne SetPrint utility (http://www.sundorne.com/FrameMaker/Freeware/setPrint.htm) thta will automatically set this for your FM sessions only.
One other place where fonts can hide is in table definitions. The catalog stores the font information (and not just the explicit paratag) of the cells in the header and first row. As Jeff mentions, you need to check the MIF file in detail. An excellent tool for quickly browsing your MIF is Graham Wideman's Mifbrowse (http://www.wideman-one.com/gw/tech/framemaker/mifbrowse.htm).

like most of the programs quit's unexpectedly. some programs does not work on it. like adobe cs5 is not working. everytime time when i do click on adobe cs 5 icon it shows a message "To open “Adobe Photoshop CS5,” you need to install a Java SE 6 runtime, but you are not connected to the Internet.To install a Java SE 6 runtime later, open “Adobe Photoshop CS5” again" while i always remain connected on the net.
2. when ever i insert an avi or mpeg video disk it shows the file format not recognized. to **** with this macbook pro n its 10.7.5 lion. the same disk works/runs on windows on windows systems.

it sounds like a fualty installation of Lion, this may happen from time to time.
The best thing to do in this situation is to reinstall Lion. You will not loose anything doing this, but you should always keep back ups of your information.

basically hold Cmd+R on boot..
first go to disk utility, verify and repair your disks and permissions. Exit out of Disk utility and then go directly to "reinstall Lion"
choose that and let it reinstall.
Adobe CS6 does need Java to run.
To play your movies you might need to get an application called VLC. VLC is a free app and will play most videos and music files you throw into it.

you have a 64bit intel mac, so get the one for that.
