Inserting Captivate Demo in RoboHelp 7

In a previous thread Captiv8tor included links to two tutorial-type blog articles about how to successfully include Captivate demos into a RoboHelp file. I can't find the links again. Could you post them again?

Hi there
I'm wondering if these are the links you are referring to?

  • Cannot insert Captivate Demo - filename contains illegal characters

RoboHelp HTML v8 on XPpro. Captivate v4.
I have created a simple Captivate v4 application demo and published to SWF.
In my RHhtmlv8 project, I create a new topic, and choose Insert > Adobe Captivate Demo.
The Insert dialog allows me to select my SWF file. It shows it in the Insert dialog and starts to play it.
No matter what my SWF filename is (e.g. abc.swf, video1.swf, etc.), when I click the OK button in the Insert dialog, I get the error:
'Unable to rename file, "abc.swf". The filename contains illegal characters.'
I have searched the forums here and find no solution.
How do you get support from this company? I went to the support link and it only showed Captivate as an option, even though I have a valid license for RH8 and have registered it. Yet - for 2 days now, I have not heard back from any support via that mechanism.
    Jeff

    Hi Jeff
When you attempt to insert the demo, by chance do you still have the project open in the Captivate editor? If so, you likely need to close it there before attempting to insert into RoboHelp. I've seen all manner of weirdness with this.
Another thing that seems to have happened recently that is worth looking at. When you Published your Captivate demo, did you Publish as AS2 or AS3? (For those that may wonder, AS refers to ActionScript. Similar to JavaScript and is the Flash programming language.)
I've begun to notice issues with inserting Captivate content where I have published as AS3.

  • Out of Memory error when inserting Captivate demo

When trying to insert an Adobe Captivate demo into a topic, I get an error message that simply says "Out of Memory". I thought this might have something to do with our SharePoint source control, so I tried adding the same .SWF file to a project NOT in source control (stored on my local), and I got the same error. I am using RoboHelp 10. The .SWF file is 62,716 KB. HELP?

Is it only this demo that is giving problems? It might very well be the SWF size.
If this is the only file giving problems, can you try the following:
    - Create a small SWF file with the same file name as the SWF you are trying to import (from CP or by renaming a text file) and import that into RoboHelp.
    - Replace the SWF file that was included in the RH project with the SWF that was giving problems.

  • Captivate demo in RoboHelp

I put a Captivate demo in the RoboHelp file. It works fine. The only problem is the size. The demo is larger than the RoboHelp window and requires the user to scroll down and side ways to see parts of the demo. Also, because of the size, the Stop, Play, Pause buttons and Progress bar don't appear.
Is there anyway to make the demo's size smaller (doesn't require alot of reducing) and to make the buttons appear on the bottom of the screen? Is this a RoboHelp problem or something that I can adapt in Captivate?
    Thanks,
    Judy

    Hi there
In addition to what the others have suggested you may wish to consider that you are able to open your Captivate movie in a separate window. Note that when you publish your Captivate movie from Captivate (if you are publishing as SWF) you end up with other files. You usually get an HTML page and a JavaScript file and possibly other files depending on your movie contents and settings.
So instead of inserting your Captivate demo into an existing RoboHelp topic you may import the HTML page that Captivate created and link to that so it appears in a new window independent of the help system.

  • Deleting Inserted Captivate Movies from RoboHelp 7?

How do you delete Captivate movies that you insert into
RoboHelp 7? It seems like it should be easy, but I don't see how.
    Thanks,
    Tom

Thanks Rick. My problem was that I was trying to delete the
swf file directly, rather than deleting the topic the Captivate
movie was inserted on. After deleting the topic (or companion page)
like you said, the swf is removed automatically.
On another note, I was reading an instructional article by
John Daigle on Captivate 2 and RoboHelp.
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/captivate/articles/cp_rh_integration_06.html
In the article, he describes a workaround for getting the player
controls and border to appear when you insert a Captivate movie
into RoboHelp (a Captivate movie that was created outside of
RoboHelp). However, I've found that when I import the Captivate swf
file with the word _skin in it (there are a couple of swf files
Captivate outputs), the borders and player controls appear
automatically without the workaround. Is this a bug that Captivate
3 and RoboHelp 7 fixed from the previous version?

  • Load limitations for Captivate Files in RoboHelp?

We are investigating RoboHelp 9 as a solution for an upcoming help project that would involve a large number of Captivate demos (approximately 70) ranging in size from 1 - 5MB. Has anyone run into issues using large numbers of Captivate files in a RoboHelp project? Is there a maximum file size for Captivate demos in RoboHelp? Any other issues? I'd be very interested in hearing from anyone with experience in this area.

    Welcome to our community
There really shouldn't be any load limitations other than those imposed by the Captivate files themselves. My guess is that you plan on using WebHelp, no? And if you are, the Captivate demos will be loaded as needed from the server. So the only lag you will see is the delay for what it takes for the server to serve up the demo itself.
Hopefully this answers your question. If not, post back and we will take another stab at it.

  • Robohelp freezes when inserting large Captivate Demo

When I try to insert a demo from My Captivate Projects, it
suddenly freezes. It has happened several times. Any ideas on what
I am doing wrong. Thank you!

    Hi there
You may experiencing what I frequently used to. Do you also
have Captivate open on your PC? Here's the deal. I use both
RoboHelp and Captivate and also frequently combine the two. So
perhaps I just created a Captivate piece and want to use it in
RoboHelp. I flip between the two and attempt to insert the
Captivate. Then a hang. What gives?
Well, odd as it may seem, until you actually close the
Captivate project in Captivate, it sort of has "hooks" into it. By
closing the project in Captivate, I'm able to seamlessly insert it
    into RoboHelp.
Hopefully this helps you out... Rick

  • Inserting PIP video into captivate demo - audio problems

    Hello,
I am using CP6 and have captured a 1 second demo then imported an FLV file into the demo as a PIP file.  It works fine except for some reason it has chopped 1.7 seconds off of the audio at the beginning of the demo:
Any help would greatly be appreciated
    thanks
    ali

There's a demo here: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/new-in-robohelp10-enterprise-productivity-features/robohelp-10-i ntegration-with-captivate-6/ I followed those instructions and got it to work. The trick is to use both SWF and HTML5 output when you insert the Captivate demo. That's what I wasn't doing. (Also, be sure to download the Captivate patch.)

  • How to insert Captivate 8 Demo into RH 10 without users having to scroll to view content? i.e. can I

I am building RH10 Web Help that primarily consists of Captivate 8 Demos. I recorded a 900px x 700px region with my monitor set to 1024x700.
When I insert the demo into an RH 10 topic and specify that the display window for the demo should be 900x731 (extra height to allow for space needed by Captivate play bar) the viewer has to scroll the window to see entire contents if their screen resolution is less than 1200x780.
    Scrolling bad.
How can I make the Captivate demo auto-size so that it fits in the 900x731 window I gave it WITHOUT any need for user to scroll.
    Thanks,
    Ted

The skin of the help itself also takes some space. You can minimize or
    hide the skin.
My preference is to insert a placeholder image that opens the actual
    movie in a popup. See
    http://www.wvanweelden.eu/blog/2012/07/27/captivate-movies-robohelp
(Note that this method only works for Flash output.)

  • Scaling Captivate videos in RoboHelp Multiscreen

    RoboHelp HTML 11, Captivate 7
I'm including Captivate videos into my Robohelp HTML project. I need to be able to shrink the video "object" to fit in our window.
Rick, you've answered this question several times over the years, such as here: Re: How do you scale captivate file in Robo 9 to fit the screen?  In my case, the output has to run in Internet Explorer without Shockwave Flash enabled.  (Also, the user won't have RoboHelp or Captivate installed, if that matters).  I'm told that our Captivate demos were published in "Scalable HTML" format. I was using Multiscreen as the output, but I'm open to one of the other HTML outputs.
I tried it two different ways:
I imported the Demos using File --> Import --> Adobe Captivate Demo --> HTML5 Output, then selected the appropriate index.htm file. The videos run, but resizing the text box or demo "object" only crops the video.  We even tried saving them in a smaller size in Captivate, but they seem to be the same size in RoboHelp.
I imported the project (*.cptx) using File --> Import --> Adobe Captivate Project. Doing this, I can resize the video (and watch it using that "viewer" that appears after I click "Generate"). However, when I run the index.htm file in Internet Explorer (as I assume the users will do), the video is blank unless I enable Flash. (This is despite the fact that I checked "Use Adobe Captivate HTML5 Output" in the Multiscreen layout!)
What's the best way to approach this?  (I hope you're not going to tell me that I have to put everything into Baggage, because as you've pointed out in the past, that would be a very big job.)
    Thanks.
    -- Shawn

    Hi Shawn
Unless you want to host the Captivate output separately from RoboHelp and just link to it where needed, you are going to find yourself a bit "stuck" with the baggage trick.
If the content needs to scale, you have a couple of ways to deal with it.
    1. You can simply link from a TOC page to the html page for the Captivate output. Using this method should cause the Captivate output to scale to the topic frame.
    2. You can insert an InlineFrame and point its content to the Captivate html page in Baggage. You would then need to configure the frame to be 100% wide. You would take this approach if you have other content that needs to come before and/or after the video.
I would heartily encourage you to report the pain points of being forced to add Baggage folders and files as a bug to Adobe using the link below.

  • Captivate Demo Does Not Appear

I'm using TCS 3.5, have a machine with 8 GB RAM, large hard drive, fast processor.  I am using Captivate to record in Demonstration mode at 1024 x 768.  I am outputting to swf.
I have followed the RoboHelp instructions to the letter, but still get this problem: the Captivate demo does not show in my CHM, except when you click the View Result button after compiling. It also shows up in the topic preview ("View Selected Item").
It does not show up when you double click the CHM file in a folder.  What shows is an outline of where the demo should be, with a red X in a little box at the upper left corner.
It does show up in WebHelp.  The code in the CHM looks okay to me:
    <body>
    <p><object id="object1" data="captivate_demo.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"
                 style="border: none;" width="1445" height="950">
    <param name="movie" value="captivate_demo.swf">
    <param name="quality" value="high">
    </object></p>
    </body>
I have the latest Flash update (as of 10 minutes ago) running.
    Ideas?

    Jack DeLand wrote:
    Any workarounds at all?
You mean besides stating that folks only use the CHM on 32 bit systems or offering instructions on how to launch the 32 bit help viewer?
I do suppose you could use the Shortcut control to open an instance of Internet Explorer with the Captivate page. But that would require ensuring the Captivate SWF and associated files (HTML, JS) were shipped and installed to the same folder as the CHM file. And depending on how your CHM was launched, you might need to script the path to the file because of the CHM pathing bug you see when a CHM is launched by an application.

  • Adobe Captivate Demo

    Hi,
I tried with the steps given in the "Create Adobe Captivate Demo", But the Adobe Captivate Demo option appears disabled after clicking the Project Manager tab and Placing the cursor on the folder and then selecting File > New, and choosing Adobe Captivate Demo. Please Help.

    Hi there
I'm not certain, but this may be one of those features that will only work if you have installed RoboHelp as part of the Technical Communication Suite.
At any rate, even though it's possible to open Captivate and record a demo from RoboHelp, I'd never advise anyone to work that way. My advice would be to use each product independently. Then add the Captivate demo you created using Captivate to your RoboHelp project.
And yes, I'm well aware that the method does exist, but then again, just because I can connect my blender to my car's cigarette lighter doesn't mean it's the best way to use either, no?
