Inserting Layers

Hi,
I want to use layers within a static background, instead of
changing pages to navigate through my site.
My dreamweaver MX help function is not working.
Can anyone please tell me how to insert layers & navigate
between them?
Thankyou!
Laini

This is a very bad idea. You will wind up with one huge page,
that acts
like a slug, and that nobody can bookmark....

  • Inserting layers issue

    Hey everyone...
I am having a strange problem... when I go to "Insert" then to "Layout Object" I am not able to select "layers".  Have I accidentely switched this off somewhere?  Could there be another possibility?
    Thanks for your advice....

Which version of DW are you using?
In DW CS4, layers are known as APDivs.

  • Option to insert layer greyed out dreamweaver CSS4

    Hello,
I installed dreamweaver CSS4 and the option to insert a later is greyed out. I previously used dreamweaver MX 2004 to create my site. Is there a new way to insert layers? Thanks Andrea

Murray, I'm going to get cranky here.
When using AP Divs in concert with Flash and also in concert with Spry and other Javascript, you certainly do have to put them on the page in the right order or your Spry menus will not fall over your  AP Divs in visually-appropriate layering. This makes them tricky.
The mantra that an AP Div is absolutely positioned relative to its containing element flies out the window in such situations. To be clear, one must re-think which containing element one is using...it doesn't not work...and the solution is to change one's thinking in terms of which containing element to use.
I have recently worked (and worked and worked) on getting such a page to function the same in all browsers. So you can't tell me that they all render the same, because they do not. Ultimately, they did, but mainly because I changed my code.
It is very possible that you have successfully internalized the order in which it is necessary to make things work from the very beginning (Good for you!) or you have heeded the generally trumpeted call to not use AP Divs. In constructing this particular page (a page with a large background image over which must be located numerous other bits, including a Spry Menu Bar), I worked from the top down as I usually do, and "top down" (top of the viewport from header to footer) is not always the same as "picture plane out" in stacking order.
Every browser except the Microsoft browsers must be reading my mind and my assigned z-order, and interpreting stacking as I do, as I work from the top down. Microsoft insists that APDivs that will later be expected to "lie down" under Spry Menus and so forth be coded and loaded BEFORE those Spry Menus show up.
So as I worked, I converted some of the AP Divs (conveniently positioned, but ultimately unworkable because of IE) to Relative Divs. It is not a system I use frequently, and it is not my usual system, and it is not the system I would necessarily recommend, but it is possible as a solution to an untenable situation.
Such is my experience, decidedly on a shorter calendar than yours, but there it is.

  • How to add layers in Dreamweaver CS5

I am using Dreamweaver CS5 for the first time and cannot find a way to insert layers. One comment I ran across on the internet suggested that layers are a thing of the past. If this is so, can someone please suggest another way to achieve the same result? I need to add resizable, movable text boxes on top of a full-page background image. How do I do this without layers? Thanks!

Layers produced such horrible code, Adobe saw fit to remove them from CS3.  Good riddance to layers!
For best results, find a pre-built CSS layout that has been tested to perform well in all browsers.  Depending on your needs, you could begin with a basic 1, 2 or 3-column layout.   Then it's a fairly simple matter of inserting elements where needed.

  • Using an animated gif/other to display series of images within another image?

I design custom baseball cards for a hobby, and am wondering if I can use an animated GIF inset within a large photo to display a rotation of images.
It is easiest if you look at the "card"/image . . . within the circle, where there is a picture of Ruth holding some bats, I would like to add a series of several images that would rotate through (obviosuly the "card" would be for viewingonline rather than printing).
Is it possible to do?  I am thinking an "animated gif" would be the easiest, but if there is some other way (video, etc.). I am open to that.
I just would like to know if the goal can be done, and if so, how to do it.
    TIA!!!

That can be done with a gif.  You just set up your bg image, then have a series of layers for your insert.  Create a frame animation by opening it in Window>Timeline.  Have all your insert layers except one turned off.  Create a new frame, the turn on the next layer.  Keep repeating creating a new frame and turning on a new layer.  When you're done, you can set the time each frame displays.  Save it using save for web using the gif option.

  • Newbie general Question

I have been attacking my training on DW8 for the past 2
months. Several books and 1-2 hours a day at the computer playing
with it and I still feel a bit rudderless. There seems to be 5
different ways to do the same thing. I paid a guy (professor at a
local university) to tutor me a some on it and he builds websites
by slicing images in photoshop and doing the "save for web" thing.
Others seem to use tables for everything. Then there are tutorials
for building with "div tags" and centering stuff up with css. So
far the easiset way I have found is inserting 'layers" and
inserting images and text in those. You folks here seem to know
what you are doing so where should I spend my time getting good?

    He's a moron.
You should have spent your money on books on HTML and CSS
    instead of trying
to learn the tool and not the technology.

  • Bits and Pieces Stop Working

I had to wipe my machine however after i reloaded Dreamweaver
MX, there are some parts that done seem to be working. Example, The
insert Tables is greyed out and i cant figure how to get it
functional. Insert Layers are the same way. Also I noticed on the
page properties box it no longer has the option to create link
functions there like never underline etc. This came from the disk
and i have no idea why it wont work and i can not update the sites
i had previously. what did i do wrong?
    Thanks!

DMX6.0 or DMX6.1? If the former, run, don't walk, to the
    updater on the
    Adobe site.
Might you be operating in Layout mode? VIEW | Table Mode? If
    so, change to
    Standard Mode right away.

  • Page looks awful in firefox

    I need help Please.....
I am helping make a small website for a non profit group. My
background is in graphics, not web design, I have read and read
done many tutorials and taken a dreamweaver class. I still have so
many questions! My problem is the page looks fine in IE but is all
messed up in firefox, and for those that use firefox I would like
    for it to be right.
I know using layers is probably not a great idea, since
graphics is what I like to do, I thought I could sort of make a
template and insert layers where I want the text/information to be
    editable easily.
I would be very grateful for any help or suggestions. Here is
the website that is making be pull my hair out!

  • Inserting a Clip w/out Moving Other Layers

Let's say I want to insert video only to the Video 1 layer and have it move that layer's content to allow for the insert, but keep the other video and audio layers the same. Is there a way to do that? What I have been doing which is a pain is to heighlight all the clips on video 1, move them, drag the new clip in, then heighlight the clips in video 1 again and move them back. There has to be an easier way.
    Thx for the help!

  • Layers disappear when inserting HTML

I hope there is a simple solution to this. I am trying to use

  • Inserting task script or code into layered tiffs

Hello to anyone that can help.
You may or my not be able to help me with this one and ill understand if you dont want to invest any time, however perhaps you can point me in the right direction as it may be out of your domain.
I work at NewsLtd in Sydney Australia and we use an automated enhancement software programme called Intellitune X by Agfa.
Images are checked one by one before being approved and sent on to their destination on a server. Often we have to layer etch files and to do this we divert the tiff image from Intellitune to Photoshop. The etch is done and saved back to intellitune as a layered tiff (intellitune does not support Psd's). The file will not save back to intellitune if the "save transparency" box is ticked, so we have to find the file on the server and open and re-save with the  "save transparency" option. Is there any way to insert a code or script into all layered tiffs saved out of Photshop to activate the "save transparency" option as soon as the image  is saved on the server?
    Thanks
    Irvine.

Yo are asking the impossible more or less. Files themselves should by no means contain executable code and even if they do, they would eitehr trigger your virus scanners and drive your system admin crazy or cause a million otehr issues when used in otehr apps. At best they are ignored. It would possibly be doable by writing a VBScript that keeps an eye on your folders (I think only BB scripts have that kind of low-level file access at all; JavaScript's security model would prevent such functionality in that kind of script), but scripts are modal and block the entire program. Also, the script basically needs to run in an infinite loop (if that's even possible). So even if it could be done, it needs to be done from an exclusively reserved machine that does nothing else nad it needs to be perfectly synced with teh file server to look for file modified timestamps and specific file types.

  • Inserting a 3D object below the layers

When I add a 3D object to a pdf in Acrobat Professional, and then add some images as layers, the 3D object is always above the images in the layers, even though the layers are set up to be in front.
When I add a 3D object to a Framemaker document in Framemaker 9, and then save it to a pdf, any layers I add in Acrobat are above the 3D object, as I think they should be. When the 3D object is activated it appears on top of everything again, but I can deactivate it and display a layer over it.
Is there any way to add the 3D object so that it will be behind layers, without going through Framemaker?
    Daniel,

You could technically accomplish setting the orientation and measure it using the Camera tool in the 3D panel. But to answere your direct question you should duplicate the 3D object you want to convert, position it and then select Rasterize layer. I hope that helps you.

  • Inserting video into layers...

I have a small video recorded on Quicktime Format, and I want
ito apply to a lyer in Flash... what is the best format to do it ?
and the best way to change formats ? thanx in advance...

Convert from quicktime to FLV and you're good to go. Flash 8
Pro has an FLV encoder. If you installed Flash 8 pro then you
should also be able to export to FLV from quicktime.

  • I would like that when I insert files. the endings of the files appear in the Layers palette. Otherwise I have to add manually the extensions (for example ".png") to generate assets for all layers.

I Would appreciate a practical solution

Drag and Drop or placing over the menu gives the same result. Scripting is the only solution here .. i think so

  • Load/import images into layers to create animated gif in PE4

I'm trying to make an animated gif using Photoshop Elements 4.0.
I have numerous images (photos) that I need to insert into separate frames of one image.
(photo1, photo2 ..... photo10 - all combined in layers to create the frames of the animated gif)
I can open each photo separately, copy it, go the the animated gif image, create a new layer, and paste the image into the layer to create a frame in the animated gif.  This is very time consuming.
Does Elements 4.0 allow for just opening/importing the separate images (photos) into the layers (frames) of the gif direclty?  I remember having software that came with Macromedia Dreamweaver 4.0 in 2000 that made this simple and straight forward.

We are not the right people to ask.  The Touch forum (for tablet) is at
