Inserting line numbers in a pages document !

How can you do this ? I need to do it for a dissertation

Hi Bruce,
Contrary to the Apple Tip on numbering the lines, I've found that it's much easier to:
Insert a Table with one column and N-rows,
turn off the Header Row using the Tables Inspector
Fill Down with numbers,
set the borders to None,
adjust the text alignment to suit,
position the table in the left margin.
Once you have a page of text, adjust the row spacing of the table to get the numbers to line up with the text lines. Do this by clicking off the table, then once on the table to expose the handles. drag the bottom center handle to stretch or compress the rows of the table. Grab the whole table to position it.
Much easier to do than to describe. Lots easier than a text box.

How to insert increasing numbers in a Pages document?

Hello and thank you in advance for your time.
1) Does anyone know if there is a way to insert a unique number (let's say starting at 0001 and increasing by 1 to 2000) into a document in Pages?
I want to print out tickets (8 or 10 a page) and need a unique identifier on each.
Is this as easy as it sounds it should be, or not functionality in this software.
2) Would using Numbers be a wise alternative? I would prefer not to have to duplicate the design 2000 times and click and drag the number all the way down.
My apologies if there is a really simple solution that is not coming to me at the moment (which I hope is the case)!

Does anyone know how to insert line numbers into a pages document?

One of the crude, but easy, workarounds is to Insert a 1-column table (zero Header Rows), Floating, and Fill the column with ascending numbers. Position the column in your left margin and adjust the row height to match your line spacing. Things will line up better if your body text is styled with line height set to "Exactly". When you have the alignment satisfactorily close, click once on the border of the table to select the entire table and go to the Graphic Inspector and set Stroke to None. Then, while the table is still selected, Format > Advanced > Move Object to Section Master to get it to appear on following pages.

How to insert line numbers in InDesign CS5

I am creating a document that needs to have line numbers appear every for every 5 lines of text. Using the list function, I can get a number for every line, but can't find a way to just number line 5, 10, 15, 20, etc.

Thanks for the prompt reply, Bob, but from what I read in the comments on the script is that it inserts line numbers for every line and has no options for customizing to show numbers for only lines 5, 10, 15, etc. Also, using the list function in InDesign on selected text I can get the same result (including multi page if I select all text) and then convert the auto list numbers to text, which would allow me to remove unwanted numbers and leave just the ones I need (although that would be a painful manual process for a longer document.).
Am I missing something about the script?
I must admit that I'm shocked that this isn't a built in capability in InDesign!

Is there any way of inserting a "file path" into a document in the new version of pages. You could do it in Pages 09 but I can't find any way of doing in the new

Pages '09 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder.
Export your Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx and trash/archive Pages 5.
Then rate/review Pages 5 in the App Store.

I want to hyperlink my Table of contents to the actual content of the document. I know how to do it in a Word document but not in a Pages document/

If it is Pages 5.5.1 you persuade yourself that you never wanted to do it.
If it is Pages '09 select the reference text in the document body of a Word Processing temp[late, and go Menu > Insert > Bookmark

What's the best way to insert a numbers sheet into pages?

I have some spreadsheets in numbers that I want to insert in pages...somehow it's not so intuitive.
First of all when I paste them in a pages text box...a part of the sheets fall off the botom of the page
Even a bigger problem...The should be in landscape...while all my text is in portrait...

(1) you can't insert a sheet in Pages. Only tables !
(2) before pasting your table in Pages, you may resize it so that it may fit in a page.
(3) the users which took time to look in Pages User Guide are aware of a feature described as : Linking Text Boxes.
It's a good answer to your problem.
In a Word Processor document, create a text box and paste your table in the new tex box.
At the bottom of the box you will see a small square with a symbol plus. It's a flag warning you that the box contents is too large for the box.
No problem, insert a page break to force the opening of a new page then read carefully the user guide :
Applying what I highlighted, you will create a new box linked to the first one so that your table will flow in it.
If it's not sufficient, you may link a third box …
More, we are allowed to rotate the text boxes so you may edit them a way allowing them to host your landscape table.
From my user's point of view, it's absolutely intuitive.

Dynamically linking a Numbers graph into Pages document

I want to creat a Pages 5.2 document that uses a graph made in Numbers 3.1 -- I see that the older versions of iWork allow for this. Can anyone help me do this, I would really appreciate it. Thanks Tom.

The Link feature is gone. You can use the old version and have the feature you miss, or you can soldier on with the new one. Numbers is still the best place to build and edit Charts. Once you have Pasted the Chert into Pages, you can activate the chart and click on Edit Chart Data to expose the underlying table. Then you can Paste the new data, copied from Numbers, to update the Pages chart.

Applescript to insert graphic from file into Pages document

I am trying to insert a picture from a file into Pages using Applescript, i.e. I am trying to do via script the same thing as the Menu command " Insert" followed by "Choose...".
I have tried the following Applescript and variants of it but it does not work:

Inserting Hyperlinks in Pages Documents

I am writing a document in Pages with the intent of posting it at blogsite where I have editing privileges. I cannot, however, figure out how to highlight a portion of the text and link that text to a URL address. Can this be done with Pages?

Here is what is occurring when I attempt to insert a hyperlink in a Pages document:
1. When I click on the Inspector button and check the hyperlink box the following URL address appears (as though it were a default) http://livepage.apple.com/
2. This URL address will also appear in the Pages document that I am working on. I then have to return to the document and remove this URL address before continuing.
3. If I delete this particular URL address from the Link Box and paste in the URL address I want, the highlighted text in the document appears with a rectangular shaped box around the words I want hyperlinked but there is no link established.
4. These events are all quite puzzling because I had assumed that inserting a hyperlink was a fairly easy process. I looked in the Pages' Help section to verify my understanding before I even made my initial attempt to insert a hyperlink. After continually failing to do so, I posted a message that Dennis was kind enough to respond to but I am still pretty much stuck.

im using the class JTextArea of the swing class to view some text documents.
How i can vies the number of lines of each document:
i want the line numbers not in the document but as a part of the text area. for example:

You can do it in two ways.
Place a JLabel on left of your Text Area, Add a KeyListener to the text area. On each ENTER key press count lines of JTextArea.getLineCount(). and paint your JLabel as well. Secondly you will need to move the JLabel as soon as the ScrollBar of JScrollPane will move.
