Inserting Multiple Picture-In-Picture Clips

the picture-in-picture (pip) function works perfectly in my imovie '09--where 1 SMALLER clip is overlaid on top of the MAIN clip that takes up the entire frame. however does anybody know how to insert MULTIPLE smaller clips over the main clip?
for example, i have 8 smaller clips and i want to use the pip function to overlay them on top of a main (ninth) clip.
is there a plug-in for this? or is there another software i can use to do this on the cheap? any other ideas how i can achieve this within imovie '09 would be appreciated. help please! thanks!

How can I insert multiple pictures into a "diary" document?

We started traveling in an RV. I'm keeping several journals but want to put everything into one document. I'd like to either insert a slide show at each location I write about, or just insert a number of pictures easily! the first time I selected about 8 pictures and they just laid over each other. I couldn't figure out if text in front, around, and they all come in the same size, too big. I'm looking for an easy fix as I have 22 events to write up and insert pictures in.
Are pages the best way to go?

In imovie, I have greenscreen clip. First I want to change background to solid color THEN add a picture within picture. When I try to stack all 3, I get two but not all three.....help! thanks!

In iMovie you can only do two at a time. So the work-around would be to do the green screen/change background color part. Then Share this. Then import this piece back into an event. Then add the picture in picture.
In Final Cut Pro X, you could easily do what you are describing.
The main reason is that iMovie does all rendering in one pass. Final Cut Pro X allows multiple renders as you go along, so you can do much more complex effects.

Make sure that you have enabled (checked) Advanced Tools in the General tab under the iMovie menu item "iMovie>Preferences".
Also, a Picture-in-Picture (PIP) can be inserted only into clips in a project - not clips in an Event.

Can I do picture in picture when both clips are in a project?

I want to do picture in picture, but the clip I want as the inserted video needs to be edited first so I can't just take it from the event and drag it onto the other clip in a project. If I edit it within the project, it looks like I cannot then use it for picture in picture. What am I missing?

What you are describing can be done rather easily using FInal Cut Pro X, a $300 tool. But FCPX has a steep learning curve and is expensive, so is there a way to do it using a $15 app?
Yes, there is a way.
1) Edit your picture in picture sequence in a new project. Get it just like you like it.
2) Use SHARE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME. Choose "Movie to QuickTIme Movie" and click options. Choose Apple Intermediate Codec for the compression under Video Options. Give it a name and save it where you can find it.
3) Now, in iMovie, click FILE/IMPORT MOVIE and import the movie you just made into your Event.
4) You can now drag it in to the original project as a Picture in Picture.

By 'no memory' may I assume you are out of space on your hard drive?
Obviously you can delete them one by one, but this is tedious and will take a long time and you wish to do this quickly and efficiently.
This is my suggestion and it may not be worth a lot:
If all of your duplicates have a unique characteristic common to them that the originals do not, this MIGHT work. For example if you make a duplicate of an image, it will have the same title as the original, but will insert the word 'copy' in its' title. (It should do some thing similar with movie clips).
Go to Spotlight in System Preferences. Click on Privacy (near the top of the pane) and then the + sign (near the lower left hand corner). This will result in a drop down menu. Select all the places you do not want Spotlight to search. You should leave only Music and Movies unless you have pictures/movie clips in other places.
Enter into spotlight the unique characteristic (ie; copy) and it should (I hope) list all your duplicates. Perform a Select All, and put them in Trash.
Otherwise do them one by one or write an Apple Script Program.
If my convoluted idea does not work, perhaps you will be lucky and a more savvy person with a real solution will come forth!

For the first question: place one video on top of the other, as a connected clip. Change the size and position as you wish.
You have many questions that suggest you are very unfamiliar with the application. I think you'd be well served by going through a few online tutorials. All the things you ask are easy and fun to do in FCP X. It is best to learn by seeing it done. Look at rippletraining.com, izzyvideo.com, and others. I am sure you'll find that it will be time well spent.

The text options are very limited.
Besides the watermark option mentioned already by dj_paige you can
- add text in the Slide Show Module. Click on the letters "ABC" below the image and then select your text options from the drop-down menu. See screen shot.
Besides "Custom Text" as shown you can select any of the other options from the drop-down menu. You are not limited to one choice - you can (one after the other) select any combination from
the drop down menu. You can drag the text boz anywhere you want it to be and you can resize it and adjust the opacity.
When you are done you can export the iamge as PDF - Export as PDF works also with only one image, so it doesn't have to be a "slide show" with several images.
2) In the Print Module the text options are more limited but you can add text in the "Phot Info" panel. Unfortunately you can't move the text around and can't change the size of the text box.
As in the Slide Show Module you can save the image from the Print Module by selecting "Print to File" which creates a JPG.

Split clip of a picture in picture

Question,
When using picture and picture or a cutaway, I would like to split the top part into sections. Using the split clip command on it splits the lower main video, but not the one on top.
I am attempting to edit video from 2 cameras of the same event into one movie. I also would like to keep the sync intact through the entire thing and not have to resync each camera change by hand. I know Final Cut Express and pro can do this sort of thing, but everything costs money...
There is a neat trick with a cutaway or picture in picture- you can open the clip editor and adjust the opacity from 0% (invisible so you see what is underneath) to 100% (so you see only the top video). So the idea is to use the cutaway to paste the camera 2 ontop of camera 1, sync them once, then split the top video and delete sections or it (or reduce it opacity to 0%), thereby showing the video underneath...
any ideas?

Provide the full path to the picture file. Or if you're going to use a relative path, make sure it's relative to your current working directory.
I don't know what you mean by a "local" file or by "my workspace".

How To Add a picture-in-picture clip

Im trying to add a smaller video inside another video which is full screen, I have been looking and I can only find tutorials for the old version not the new one: 10.0.3 as the whole thing is new. Is someone could please help is would be greatly appriated!

Drag the clip you want to add above the existing clip. Select the new clip by clicking on it so that it is highlighted with the yellow line around the perimeter. Towards the top right of the iMovie window an icon that looks like a "pop out window' icon will appear. Hover your cursor over it and it will say 'video overlay settings.' click that icon. choose "picture in picture"
Note: iMove on my mbpro and mbair behave a little differently, I gave you the directions for the mbpro. the air is a little easier. when the pop out window looking gliff appears automatically underneath it a popdown menu appears, just choose 'picture in picture' from that dropdown menu...same difference.

Im doing a drumming music video and with the multi cam clip all the angles are nicely sync'd top the audio.
Problem is if i want to have 3 angles on top of the main shot, im gonna have to re-sync them all to get them to line up manually. If i could use the multi cam clip they will already be aligned

My Bionic will only show the first of a multiple upload of pictures on Facebook. A friend that has a Razor on Verizon is able to swipe through all the pictures of a multiple picture upload and see them all one at a time. I also find no way to Share on Facebook from the Bionic.

I usually have a bunch of pics I want to upload at once too! Are you going to the Gallery>Select Multiple>Choose Pictures>Menu>Photo Share Facebook? Do you have your Facebook account set up through the application on the device? Are you using Facebook for Android? This needs to be setup in order to share. Let us know!
