Inserting part of a clip in a theme which begin at one define point

Hi,
I use theme a lot and I have no real problem wieh picture, but when it comes to video clips, that another story.
What I'm trying to understand is how to insert a clip in a theme, but make it start from one define point in the clip, not the beginning. Let's say, for instance, that I have a clip of 1 minute, but I want to put the clip in a theme starting at 30 seconds of it.
I've tryed to put the clip in the timeline, then "cut" the clip where I want it to start (CMD-T) and put that in the theme, or reduce the clip from the begining with the special handle. The problem is that the "non destructive" way iMovie handle the clips, it always work as if I never truncated the clip at all.
Any way of doing what I want?
Thanks for any help.

Export the split clip to a Full Quality movie. Import that movie back into your project. Add that to your theme.

  • Losing parts of audio clips while merging them to video

    Hello,
This is my first post to this forum... I need some help with a newly installed Final Cut Pro 5.1.2. I usually edit with Avid and thus am not super familiar with Final Cut Pro.
Here's the thing: I have a problem syncing my separate audio and video clips together. Well actually the syncing part goes fine; I create an inpoint in the video and in the audio clip, merge them together using inpoints. What happens is a impeccably merged clip - except most of the audio is gone. The audio clip just ends way before it did the original audio file - you can see this clearly when dragging the merged clip into the timeline. It is always the end of the clip that is missing, and usually it is most of the clip's duration also.
What I'm saying is that when viewing a merged clip I get something like 15 seconds of perfectly fine material in sync and then usually quite soon after the clap the sound just disappears.
I have tried with several clips but the result is the same every time. I wonder whether it is some kind of setting somewhere that is causing this --- just haven't found it yet.
At the moment I'm yieldig the problem with the nesting feature but I really want to know what the problem with merging is.
This is kind of urgent so I am grateful if someone has any insight in this, or tips - I don't even know where I should start to look for a solution to this.
    Thank you!

    Hello
    Thanks for a quick reply
Hmm, it seems that I am really clueless about Final Cut Pro..I am not really sure what multiclip editing means.
My audio and video are from completely different sources. I am syncing with the 'merge' feature. I mark inpoints to both of the clips in the viewer, then click them active in a bin. Then I click the 'modify' tab, then 'merge'. Then select 'by inpoints'. And this way I get a new clip in my bin that contains both the audio and the video.
This is helpful as I have a lot of material and I actually didn't even realize before your post that you CAN sync in the timeline... It does seem, however, somehow less convenient. (Is this a misconception?) I'm really not familiar with different syncing and linking options in Final Cut so I might be doing this the hard way...Is there another way to link video and audio clips to each other so that they appear as a single clip in the bin?
"When you lose audio can you unlink the two and drag you audio down to match?"
I only realised after your post how the linking function works - I am able to link and unlink clips on the timeline with no problems. That is actually what I'm going to do from now on if I don't get the 'merge' tool to work.
I am sorry that I sound like somebody who hasn't even read the manual...(Tried that). I am just really used to working with Avid and got this Final Cut Pro project with really short notice - I don't necessarily know some of the functions in FCP, as I don't even know to look for them. The merge tool resembles Avid's AutoSync and that's why I'm trying that first.
Also I am not a native English speaker so I might have explained my case a little vaguely, sorry about that.

  • IPad - with movie clips - how can I play more than one at a time?

iPad2.  I post short movie clips via iTunes to the Photo catagory.  I can play each of these clips by selecting the clip and pressing the start arrow, only the selected clip will play.  How can I select a group of movie clips and have them play with only one selection.  Like a "slide show" but for movie clips???

  • How can I stretch part of a clip only?

I am trying to replace the originally recorded voice audio with a re-recorded, clean version. I used the Automatic Speecha Alignment tool and it did an OK job, but it's not quite perfect. I now need to adjust some parts of the clip that are not perfectly aligned, while leaving the parts that are already aligned correctly in place.
Is it possible to stretch part of a clip, leaving the rest where it is? I think of this like the After Effects Puppet tool, but for audio.

You might get on better with the original method if you break down the parts that you are having difficulty with matching into smaller sections, and reapplying the Speech Alignment Tool to them like that - which is, in a way, similar to what you'd have to do with the clips; ie, split them up.

  • How do i delete a part of a clip and rejoin the audio on each side

How (or where in the manual are the instr) l) do i delete a part of a clip and rejoin the audio on each side. This is most frustrating. The join command is never available. If i select an area to delete everything above and below is deleted, whether or not its selected and whether or not its mute. I find in the manual only ways to move entire clips. I need to remove 2 words from a clip in one track.

i'm assuming your working in the multi-track mode since you didn't specify. select the razor blade tool and make two cuts to the audio, one where you want the cut to start, the other where you want the cut to end. select this smaller region that you want to delete and press the delete key.
now you'll have a gap of silence where that unwanted clip was. select the clip(s) to the right of the cut and drag them left. the default behavior is to do a cross fade when the clips overlap. you'll probably have to play with the cross fade amount in order to get it to sound natural.
    hope that helps!

I'm using a MacbookPro so can't right click to highlight (as was suggested in this forum for the same problem) and can't seem to highlight that area. What do I do?

When using the Clip Trimmer, you click DONE to indocate that you are finished.
The Trim To Selection is a great tool and I use it all the time, but you use it in the main project timeline, not the clip trimmer. Just select the frames you want so that the yellow border is around them. Then right-click and select Trim to Selection.

  • Only part of some clips show up in Viewer. Please Help!

    Hello FCE4 Experts:
I'm soooo baffled! I've been using FCE4 for three years and haven't had a problem. All of a sudden, a biggy! When I drag a clip into the Viewer window and play it, only a part of the clip has anything on it (the rest is black and silent). For example, a clip might be 25 seconds, but for the first 10 secs, I get just black, and for the last, say, 4 secs I get black. This has never happened before, ever! Anyone have any ideas?
The ONLY thing I've done different lately is that I recently purchased a second external hard drive and have been switching between them for different projects. Could this cause a weird problem like this, or is it due to something else?
Thanks very much for any advice!
    Vic

    UPDATE!
I've checked it out further, and here's what I've discovered:
When I ingested segments of my clips (not directly from my camera, but rather from a DVD back-up disk... which is what I did in this case), it seems that the segments do get ingested in a useable form, but along with each segment comes long periods of black/silent video. Weird!
So, my guess it that, when I'm ingesting only short segments of my clips, I'll need to do it directly from my camera.
FYI: I can ingest the FULL clips (from the DVDs), no problem. It's when I ingest segments of the clips (from the DVDs) that I get weird stuff going on. [And, ingesting from the camera works fine whether I ingest a full or partial clip. It's only when ingesting from back-up DVDs that I have any problems.]
Anyways, that's what seems to be going on. If anyone has any thoughts, I'd love to hear 'em!
    Thanks!
    Vixter
Note: I'm using a Canon HF-10 along with the optional Canon DW-100 DVD back-up burner.

okay so i recorded a song but each part comes out as like take 1, i have 10 takes. how can i put them all together as one take, to make one song all in one take not small pieces of a song. like i hit record and sang the entire song but when i hit play it was in pieces not just one song like it was in ten takes. is there any way i can blend it all into one take, to make one clear song?

You're not very clear in stating your problem. Maybe it's terminology: "takes" in recording lingo (and in GB lingo) are different version of exactly the same part in a song, so you only want one of them in the end. Please tell us exactly what you did and what it is that you don't like.

QuickTime Player is not itself able to do this. You need a proper DVD authoring solution such as Apple's iDVD.

  • Inserting image in video clip

How do I maintain the original soundtrack of the video clip and insert a photo with transitions on either end of the insertion? I can achieve this procedure with success without the transitions but as soon as I try to add the transitions the audio of the original video clip goes out of synchronization? Is this possible?

    Welcome to the discussions.
Most (but not all) transitions uses footage from both clips. For instance, a one second transition uses 1 second footage from clip A and overlaps with one second from clip B, making the movie one second shorter.
So it you make the still two seconds longer than the clip you remove, you can add two one-second transitions and wind up with the audio in sync.

  • Fcpx - after selecting part of a clip, marking in and out, pressing the e key does not add it to the timeline.  what do I do?

At the Mac store they showed me how to select part of the clip, Mark in an out, and then use the key board shortcut, the E, to move back down to the end of the timeline. At home it refuses to do that. I can't even drag it down. I am using Snow Leopard, not lion. Can anybody tell me why I can't get the material down to the timeline except as an entire clip?

I was stuck in this exact same position yesterday, and wow was it ever frustrating. I can't remember the exact steps I stumbled upon to figure it out, but basically you need to create a "project" (not a "sequence" like you'd think - there is no "new sequence" command in FCP X) and that "project" will in fact be the sequence you are able to add your selections to.
The same real estate the sequence lives in is also where the "project library" lives, which will overtake your sequence if invoked - look to make sure the film reel icon at the bottom left of the screen is not active (blue). If it is active, click it to make the project libary go away.
I'm still struggling with FCP X as a long time professional FCP 7 user, and from what I've read this isn't uncommon. Best of luck getting past these fisrt few awkward hurdles and onto the actual editing (which, I have to say, so far I am having a hard time being precise or creative with).

We use a doc template to create a purchased part spec document and then save them as pdf formatted files.  These part spec documents are also appended with the datasheets for these purchased parts.  When we want to update/revise the document, is there a method, using Acrobat, to make those updates to the pdf, or must we go back to the doc template and basically generate a new document?
Also, our resulting pdf documents aren't searchable.  How can we generate pdf documents that are searchable?  I may want to search for a part value or name within the body of these pdf documents, but currently can't do that...very inconvenient.
    Can you assist?

Not totally sure about the search issue. A lot depends on how you created the PDF and what is in the datasheets you attached (like are they graphics?). The doc portion should be searchable as long as you used print to the Adobe PDF printer or PDF Maker. For your use, it may be that the print is adequate. However, the result should be searchable (unless maybe you had a form with filled in fields and created the PDF with PDF Maker. I think the form data may be retained in form fields and the fields are not searchable. In that case, a print might be a better procedure. (it would help to know the versions of WORD and Acrobat as well as the exact process you used to create the PDF.)
If the appended data sheets do not change, then you might try opening the original PDF and then using Replace Pages to replace the file created from the DOC file.

  • How can I edit part of a clip

How can I edit part of a clip in iMovie.

First, select the portion of the clip that you would like to edit. Do this by dragging your mouse. A yellow border should be around this portion of the clip.
Next, right-click inside the yellow border and select SPLIT CLIP. Now you have a separate clip that you can apply your edit to.

  • How to sync external audio to clips and KEEP them linked?

I have never been able to do this. Very simple...
    1. Shoot some video with a DSLR and...
    2. Record audio with external recorder, such as an H4N.
    3. Sync then in Premiere Pro (I have CS5)
    4. Keep those files associated with each other so that you do not have to keep them in your timeline at all times.
Unfortunately, this is a mystery to me. I'm always stuck with everything in my timeline or I will lose those now linked files.
Below is a video I shot of my computer screen and Premiere Pro so I can explain it visually.
Yes, there is likely an easy solution. But I haven't found it. Please note that I have CS5, no plans to upgrade and no money to do so.
    Thank you.

Provided that you are happy to lose the synch with the original audio of the clip, this can be done.
Right click on the original clip and select Unlink from the drop down menu.
Highlight the video and the new audio by clicking on both whilst holding down Shift, and R click.  Select Link in the drop-down menu.
If you want synch for both audio clips, then the only work-around that I have found is to duplicate the original video clip in a track which is turned off, so it does not show, and link the new audio to that.

  • How do I select part of a clip to import in Final Cut Pro 10.0.7?

Greetings. I'm a newby in FCPX.  I've been watching Michael Wohl's tutorial and it looks like I should be able to mark parts of clips stored on my HD to import into the event browser.  But I don't seem to be able to mark the clips with either the "i o " keys or dragging.  Only the full length clip can be selected. Is this feature diabled in 10.0.7  or am I missing something?  I also don't seem to have the film strip/list icons at the bottom of the Media Import window.  thanks!

This capability only exists when importing from a camera card or camera archive.
You can't select part of a clip to import from a hard drive movie file.
