Inserting VGA-cable causes either crash or black screen on my Thinkpad. Help!
On my newly bought W530, inserting a VGA-cable causes either a crash or a black screen on my Thinkpad.
The above happens every time I insert the VGA-cable which is quite annoying since I use it with my projector every day.
The crashes seems to happen mostly when I have the lid closed and insert the VGA-cable. If I have the lid open I mostly get a black screen (which remains black even when I pull out the cable again).
What could I try in order to fix this?
What driver (or other) would be the most likely cause?
Solved!

Thanks Adam! :-)
Yes, like I mentioned, the crashes disappeared after installing the latest driver from Nvidias own site.
The remaining troubles are minor glitches which I can live with until NVidia hopefully fixes them with an updated driver.
But it is was really great to see instructions on how to boot into Safe-mode on Windows 8. I've always wondered that. Thanks again Adam! :-)

X-fi Hardware causing Low-level system Crash? Black Screen+Repeating Sou
This a problem that has persisted in my computer through three motherboards, two processors, a graphics card, two Operating systems, and a RAM overhaul. I am currently running:
Vista Home Premium 32 bit
2x SATA 250 gig
Gigabyte 965P-DS3 Motherboard
Core 2 DUO 6600
2x 2 Gig RAM
BFG Geforce 7900 GT 52 Ram
Creative X-fi Fatality Extreme Gamer
The Problem:
Typically while playing a game, after -3 hours, the screen will go black, and the speakers will emit loud popping/crackling. This happens without warning. Sometimes (Rarely) the computer will immediately reboot. Usually, it just locks up. I used to think this was a graphics card issue, However--
Today, it happened while I was just doing some desktop publishing work, while listening to iTunes. I'd had iTunes up for about 5 hours, playing music in the background. Without warning, the system crashed to black screen+popping.
Because this happened when I was at my desktop, and not in a game, I think it is not related to graphics. Any ideas?
Steps I've taken so far:
Replaced Power Supply
Disabled onboard motherboard sound,
Updated BIOS/Flashed CMOS,
Updated Chipset drivers
Uninstalled/Reinstalled newest Sound card Drivers
Uninstalled/Reinstalled newest graphics card Drivers.
Purchased additional case fans.
The previous system, which encountered the same problem, was an Evga board running XP, with different RAM.
At this point, I've run out of potential solutions. I've talked to a friend of mine, and he says that if none of that helps, it may be a low level issue either associated with heat, or a bad X-fi card. Any additional thoughts would be appreciated.Message Edited by Miyth on 0-04-20070:39 PM

My IPod quit in mid search, black screen. battery fully charged, help?
My IPod quit in mid search, black screen. battery fully charged, help?
Have you tried the standard fixes:
- Reset the iPod:
Reset iPod touch: Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
- Restore the iPod via iTunes on your computer -
Flash player causes entire system crash with black screen
When watching a video on youtube, streaming on twitch or other things my entire system will crash with the following symptoms:
-Black Screen
-Intermittent stuttering sound
-Only fixable by a hard reboot (holding the power button). The reset button will NOT work. Video will NOT return, it will continue to loop this way until a hard reset.
Your Flash Version
11.9.900
Your browser name
Firefox
Your Operating System (OS)
Windows (Windows 7)
That information taken directly from Adobe's site. Using 64-bit, 8GB of RAM installed. ATI Radeon HD 6850 card. I have done a fresh Win 7 install a couple months ago and JUST NOW put flash back on here...now it's crashing. While times vary before the crash, I just watched a youtube video for less than 5 seconds before it happened.
Upon reboot, I get the "Windows was not shut down properly" message. No "Your system has recovered..." message, however. I've seen very few posts about this and none of the solutions help but this is REALLY pissing me off now. It happened to me before and the only fix was a fresh system install. I'm not doing that again.Hi Mike,
I appreciate the reply. I can run the system for days, literally, doing other tasks such as music through iTunes, gaming through Steam, voice chatting on Ventrilo. The only time I will ever experience this issue will be the five minutes I watch a youtube video or watch a stream on Twitch..
My primary HD is a relatively new Intel SSD. I do have multiple other drives but they're used for storage of media (include aforementioned music).
I have been a youtuber and streamer for a while, and i'd like to try and record the phenominon, but i'll have to do so using an external camera since i'm not sure I can stop and save the recorded data. I'll have to do so I guess so I can give a better idea of the issue occuring.
Thanks again. -
IPhone crashing to black screen with apple, apps as well.
My iPhone 5, which i have had for a couple of weeks now, continuously crashes in a weird way. It will, while im using random applications but mostly imessage, and maps, and when i am on the home screen go to a black screen with the apple logo, as if i had done a home button + power button restart, and then come back to the lock screen within a few seconds. As well, iMessages, Maps, Chrome and other apps crash frequently while i am using them. At random times, and not when i do a certain thing. i cannot replicate either crashing issue by doing anything other than just use of my phone.
I have had my iPhone replaced twice, i am on the third iPhone 5 in the past 2 weeks, each one i've had i have done a restart, reset, restore both from the backup and "fresh", where i have manually loaded the applications, logged into icloud, and started a new sync. I still get the problem. I think it may have somethign to do with my iCloud account, i have a legacy @me account that is connected with my iCloud account, but turning off icloud on my phone does nothing. It isn't time related, and doesn't happen on regular intervals (I thought it might have been mail fetching new data, turned it off and the problem still persists). Below are some crash reports (found in settings, general, about, Diagnostics & Usage Data), i've taken a some from the springboard, imessage, maps, and some others. I have more than 120 crash reports since 5 PM on the 16th (When i last tried to restart, reset, restore), until this morning the 18th. This is the most frustrating issue i've had with an apple product, ever.
Thank you so much for your help.

438 -
I have an iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) with a 3.4 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, and AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1GB of memory.
Every day since Tuesday, the computer has been randomly crashing once or twice a day to a black screen. It doesn't matter what I am doing (surfing the web in Safari, listening to music in iTunes, etc). If there is music playing, I will get a constant stutter of audio in addition to the black screen.
When restarting the computer, it instantly goes back to either a black or gray screen after the Apple logo passes. Attempting to reset the PRAM or SMC does not fix the issue from reoccuring and I usually have to keep the computer unplugged for an extended period of time before I can get it back up and running. Sometimes I have to boot the computer up into AHT (Apple Hardware Test) or Internet Recovery to get the computer running back to normal.
When running both a normal or extended AHT, all of the hardware that is tested ends up passing. When running Disk Utility, it shows there are no hard drive related issues.
The question that I have is this an issue related to the AMD Radeon 6970M Video Card?
Back in March, my iMac's display began suffering issues with greyish smudge marks behind the glass alongside issues where it would freeze and become distorted alongside the black screen. When I brought it into an Apple Authorized Service Provider back in March of this year to have everything checked out, they replaced the display and nothing else as they could not replicate any of the graphical issues despite numerous calls to AppleCare. I ended up doing an erase and install of Mavericks and the 10.9.2 update ended up being a temporary fix for the issue.
Should I call back AppleCare and tell them I need my video card replaced or is it something else? The last panic log was from 05/15/2014:

Windows XP crashes compleet black screen
When using Lightroom in the develop mode, windows crashes complete, the screen turns black and the computer is off.
I imported about 300 pictures in a existing data base and when I was correcting the pictures in the develop mode my computer crashes.
Then I made a new data base with only those pictures and it happened again.
Black computer off.
This is a big problem for me.
Met vriendelijke groeten,
Wilco van der LugtThe kind of problem you describe is, without exception, indicative of a low-level problem, either in the operating system itself (very unlikely, XP is extremely mature by now), some drivers that get used (very, very likely), or a hardware defect (unlikely).
What you do triggers "a condition", and that condition results in what you see.
No user application (such as Lightroom) can kill a machine the way you describe by itself. This is not to say that Lightroom does not contribute, but ultimately at fault is something at a much, much lower level.
Suggestion: Update the operating system, update all drivers, run hardware diagnostic tests.
Further, try running the operating system in "Safe Mode" (which will disable a number of third-party drivers and falls back to non-optimal, but extremely well-tested base drivers).
[Just some trivia: A long, long time ago, I ran into a problem where the computer would spontaneously turn off. It turned out that my power supply simply was not equipped to handle the load put onto it. Net effect: Hard power off, initiated by the power supply.] -
Frequent crashes, lockups, black screens and glitchy display
for numerous months my macbook pro has been freezing (everything locks up, but audio will play out til the end of song), crashing (display blacks out, or whole system turns off unexpectedly), and coming up with assorted display glitches (see here: http://30.media.tumblr.com/tumblrlbyr6qXyAx1qzpew8o1500.jpg ) multiple times daily.
for quite a while i thought it was a physical hard drive issue, but after finally replacing it a few weeks ago it's continuing to act up on me. also thought it could be that nvidia issue, but i have a radeon x1600 in here.
i've had it for quite some time, so am kind of chalking it up to old age now.
any tips would be greatly appreciated!A number of older MBPS with the ATI x1600 chipset are experiencing failures like you describe that are similar to those caused by the defective NVIDEA 8600M GT chip in later MBPs. The problem is there is no repair extension program to cover the x1600. A new logic board in the only fix and quite expensive (US$800-1100 have been quoted to posters here).
However, you can ask if your computer qualifies for a "Depot Repair." Instead of fixing the computer in the Apple Store, they send it to a central facility for a complete go-through. It is a flat-fee service--about US$300--and many people who have used this method report getting there computer back with many more things fixed or replaced than were part in the original issue.
The "hook" is that the computer must show no external evidence of abuse or damage, or evidence of beer sloshing around in the works, to qualify for the $300 fee.
You don't show your geographic location. I do not know if this service is available outside the US or N. America. -
2009 mac mini crashes w/black screen & color bar
Just purchased the 2ghz mini with 1gb of ram, I installed another ram stick w/2gb. Mini crashes sometimes frequently with a black screen covering most of the desktop with just a little bit of the desktop showing at the top and a thin bar of colors on top of the black screen.
Anybody have this problem? Is it bad ram, bad video card, should I use the mini display port instead of the mini dvi port? Should I take it back, can I take it back having installed the ram myself?
Any thoughts is appreciatedWell since the RAM is the thing out of the ordinary on a new Mac, it is suspect. Unfortunately you have voided your warranty by opening the mini. The user guide for the new mini states in a couple of spots that there are no user serviceable parts and opening it voids the warranty. So your milage with Apple on the warranty may vary. And unless you are a pristine technician they will know you opened the Mac.
Since you have cracked it open once you may as well test the RAM. If it works fine with the original RAM module alone, then you know the issue is related to the new RAM. Could you have seated the RAM poorly? Where did you get the RAM? Crucial seems to have had some problems with their 2 GB RAM modules. Does it work with the new RAM alone?
And before a bunch of folks come storming in here to dispute my statement about voiding the warranty, another user with a new Early '09 Mac mini added RAM and then experienced an issue that would normally be covered under warranty. But he reported, in this very forum, that Apple told him he voided the warranty opening it himself and installing RAM and that they would no longer honor the warranty, so he would have to pay for the repair himself.

Mine started doing this on the 4th of July. I could receive calls but not answer them, I could get text messages, but not view them. The screen goes black when it goes into sleep mode and can not be woke up. When calls come in it wakes the screen up, but still can't answer the call.
If I take the battery out I can move the track ball around but can not select anything and once I stop moving the trackball the screen goes black. None of the keys on the keyboard work.
It's done this twice and was broke for about a couple of days. When it started working again the screen popped up and it was entering "252525252525252525" on the screen on it's own and then I got control of it again both times.
I was out of town and on vacation when it happened and I couldn't take it to my provider, I called them from my wife's phone and they said it was a software problem. So far it has not happened again, but I am still going to take it by my provider and see what they say.

Starcraft II crash to black screen
Hey there ladies and gents,
Whenever I play Starcraft II, it crashes to a black screen, and the sound loops in a short loop. I'm running Leopard 10.6.8. Since then, I've done a clean install, installed Boot Camp with Windows 7, updated drivers and so on, and nothing I do can get it to work.
I thought it might have been a heating problem, so I've turned down the graphics and put the laptop on a cooler, and it doesn't help.
The crash seems to occur at random intervals - I can be playing for 2 hours, or 15 minutes before it does it.
The only way to solve it is a hard reset and a pat on the back.Hey there ladies and gents,

IAudit, Safari and Photo viewing crashing with black screen
I am new to this so please bear with me, having not received any form of support directly from Apple to date.
Having reviewed several issues with Sarai crashing I too have experience the same using my work apps, using photos (both taking and viewing), keyboard entry errors when typing within apps, and black screen issues when taking photos for iAudit app.
When any app "crashes" I am returned to the screen location of the app in use ( screen 1, 2, 3 etc) then have to restart the apps.
Closing the app and re opening is the only way to unfreeze to facilitate using the apps again.
I have used these apps for nearly 2 years now, and upgraded regularly including all iOS updates. Since iOS 7.0.4 update I believe these problems have started.
Has anyone got a fix or suggest a solution? I am not short of storage, and regularly download content to my work server (work process and requirement)
Appreciate any assistance available.Try this - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased.

IPhone 3GS Crashes (gets Black Screen with White Apple Logo) Mid Phonecall
For the past week, when I make a phone call and use the speaker, after the call has lasted between 8 and 12 minutes; without warning, everything goes quiet and I get a black screen which displays the white Apple logo (the same as is displayed when you reboot your phone).
After a while, the phone comes back on, I’m not required to enter my SIM Pin and everything seems to work fine(ish) from then onwards.
I have done a reset, restore and resync in iTunes, but this still happens.
It does not seem to matter if the battery is 100% charged or not! I have tried a few battery recalibrations too!
I’ve also noticed a slight sluggishness since the upgrade to iOS4 (for example, when you receive a text message, click to view, there is a noticeable delay where the screen is blank (you can see the lines where messages should be) and then they appear/message opens).
Any ideas?
Cheers in advance.Hey Mac Beep Beep,
As did many out there on iOS4 release day, I plugged my iPhone into the PC, iTunes fired up, the software upgrade was found and installed.
Three iPhones updated in my household, all the same model (3GS 32Gb) and yet none of the others have had the same problems as mine.
On top of having the reboot during phonecall issue, my calendar (historic and future) was wiped, birthdays were added to the calendar from the information held in contacts however some (not all) were showing as a day earlier then they should be (even though they are correct in the contacts entry).
Just to clarify, when I tried to reinstall a verified version of the legacy backup (3x), I used iTunes to reset iPhone, re-active iPhone and restore said legacy back up. This failed in a spectacular way so I had to go back to an iOS4 back up.
Note: I had the problem of phone rebooting mid phonecall before I attempted a rollback to 3x.
Any further advice/ideas?
Cheers -
Hey everyone.
When firefox crashed last night, I figured it was just firefox being difficult, but when while using firefox my entire computer crashed this afternoon and rebooted with a gray screen, the spinny wait symbol, and a loading bar, I started to get concerned. After looking through console, I'm not sure what's caused it to crash like this so I'm hoping one of you bright people here can tell me what exactly happened. I'm running a mac book pro with 10.6.8, have no real addons on firefox aside from adblock plus, divx, memory restart, a french dictionary, and a skin I've been using forever and have also spoken to the developer in the past about. I'm also using Firefox 17.0.1. After trying to google some of the more unfamiliar/suspicious lines (mostly relating to launch agents), I typed into terminal the command to list all launch agents and received 3 replies naming adobe, divx, and google. I used terminal to delete them all just for safe measure (plus the adobe update window has been irritating me to no end so maybe it'll go away now, haha). I did three things when I tried to boot up again after the crash and the weird launch screen with loading bar came up: 1) I held down the power button again because a) the screen was weirding me out and b) I thought it got hung up again (bar seemed to stall for an unusually long time), 2) I tried to boot again and when the same gray screen came back I just figured I had no choice and had to sit through it. 3) when the bar was at about half way I pulled out my ethernet cord for safe measure in case something shady was going on. These three things are also reflected in the log below.
I currently live overseas and the nearest Apple store is over two hours away with no guarantee of a native english speaker working, so if anyone can let me know what caused the crash and if there's anything I can do about it, I would be extremely grateful. The following is my current console log in its entirety from today, including my attempted system update to see if that would improve things (which also resulted in a gray screen with loading bar later), and a really weird bit at the end that is also confusing (but possibly caused by me tinkering in terminal- not sure).
NAME is replacing my HD name, and my screen name here (caithris) has replaced my computer user name. NUMBER has replaced anything that looks like a serial number of some kind.
Thanks so much ahead of time-- please let me know if there's anything else I can share.

Thanks again- I mean it. It's lousy being stuck away from home when crazy thing happen to your main line of communication!
-CaithrisThe gray screen with loading bar issue is a at boot fsck (file system check) that has discovered something wrong with your boot drive/partition and was attempting to fix it.
OS X is booting but can't complete, so that means your hard drive is good, just likely has been either subjected to shock which damaged data on the platters, or bad sectors (the drive is dying if after fixing it, problems occurs again), or something messed something up in the file structure.
Firefox is currently at 19.02, so it appears your background auto-update has not been occurring, which makes me suspect the machine's data is broken in some manner or you have malware on the machine blocking the updates.
Your problems are multiple, in your case I advise a complete erase and install.
1: If you have a backup of your user data on a external storage drive (not TimeMachine as it might be corrupted and compromised with malware it's just going to restore back) then your good, else you have to do this.
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
Copy your data to a blank plain jane external storage drive as you want no executable files on it when you connect to the cleaned machine later.
2: Once your data is safely copied (copy visible files manually and what you know is good, not folders that can contain invisible malware programs!) then disconnect the drive(s)
3: Next assume all writeable media is contaminated with malware and treat as so. Even if you erased it.
4: Stick in your 10.6 install disk and reboot holding the c or option key down. You want Disk Utility and you want to select the ENTIRE internal drive and MUST USE the Security Option > Zero All Data (unless your in the military then use 7x erase, do not use 35x as it will take weeks and is unnecessary)
The Zero/7x erase will do two things, do a low level format and erradicate everything (including hidden stuff and deleted files) also will map off any failing sectors on the hard drive.
5: Follow the procedure here to install 10.6
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
6: Reboot the machine twice, then once you set up the machine (using a alias of course and not allowing registration), use a secured network and IMMEDIATLY Software update to 10.6.8, if you can download the 10.6.8 Combo update on another secure machine to a (new) USB thumb drive and install it on the clean Mac, do that instead.
WiFi security issues, at home and WiFi hotspots
https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Still run Software update afterwards as Apple might not have fully updated the combo update yet.
7: Once you machine is secure, download the free ClamXav and run a scan on the external storage drive with just your files, perhaps one or more PDF's or other files are not what they seem to be.
8: Make sure to install fresh copies of software from original sources and not from rewriteable media, update them to be current. Malware can be hidden in copies of programs.
9: Trash all your rewritable media, or use a Linux PC or Linux Mint in a virtual machine (VirtualBox) on another computer like Windows to scrub and reformat all the rewritable media before attaching them to the clean Mac. You have to make sure it's getting the entire media.
10: Once your machine is set back up, then make clones and time and date them.
Most commonly used backup methods
If your still having problems with the machine, it's likley a failing hard drive and you will have to replace it and repeat the steps above pretty much.
Really it's best to replace the drive in the interest of security.
