Inside the iMac

Inside every iMac I have ever torn apart (really just upgraded RAM and hard drives) there is a little plug that is right behind the RAM slots plugged into a flexible rubberlike thing that looks like some kind of expansion slot. What is this for? There is a little socket on the board and slots that I assume you would hold some kind of card and a wire that is plugged into a plastic cap that I assume is some kind of power? Am I way off track here?

sounds like you are describing the airport card slot in slot loading iMacs.

  • Cleaning inside of the iMac

wonering if anybody out there has cleaned the inside of the mac. clearing out dust.

I purchased my iMac G5 in December of '04. I installed 2GB of RAM within a couple weeks. At the time as to be expected the inside of the mac was clean. At the beginning of October of '06 I installed an airport card in my iMac. To my surprise when opening it I found it as clean as when it was first purchased. The only part that showed any type of dust was the inside of the rear cover. There was only a very slight hint of dust there. I wiped it down with a dust cloth and then made sure that there wasn't any static electricity left behind. I have both a dog and a cat and the PCs I owned before always had a lot of dust and dander in them within months. Needless to say I was very shocked when I found next to nothing in my iMac. The board of the iMac as well as the fans looked very clean. I didn't mess with it any further.

  • Where is AirPort, inside the aluminum iMac?

Looking at the iMac does anyone know where exactly is airport? Lower-right, top-left, center, top-center?

This photo might come in handy, I just don't know what it looks like.
    Thanks in advance.

I don't see it in this photo. The airport card in the iMacs are sipposed to be PCI Express mini cards and look similar to this.

  • Is there a way to use the imac as a viewer for my Nikon Camera?

After I hook up my camera to the Imac, Aperture launches.  Instead, I'd like to just use the Imac to view the photos that are on the SD card inside my camera.  That way, I can easily delete the photos I don't want to waste hard drive space on.  I could do minor cropping from inside the camera before saving the files to Aperture.  And, Photostream wouldn't pick up all those photos I didin't want to save in the first place had I moved them all over to Aperture and just viewed it with the card.  I want the imac to operate as a live monitor so I can view the photos on the SD card inside the camera.  Any thoughts??  Just like you can using a TV that has the right inputs.

If your Nikon camera supports it, you can do what you want with Nikon's software.

  • The iMac doesn't recognize my external hard disk

My iMac doesn't recognize my external hard disk. The iMac also keeps a DVD inside. It doen't throw it out despite "eject".

Sounds like you might need to make that call. In the meantime here are a few of things you could try that may help:
To eject the disk try a restart holding down the mouse button - hopefully it'll eject.
If you are running either Mountain Lion (10.8) or Lion (10.7) try booting into the Recovery HD:
Restart holding down Command+r. At the screen with 4 choices choose Disk Utility and then select Macintosh HD and click on repair disk. If it fixes anything click on repair disk again until you get a clean pass. Restart as normal from the Apple menu.
If you are running an earlier OS you would normally carry out this process by putting the grey restore disk that came with your Mac in the Disk drive and restarting holding down the C key. Choose your language and at the next screen from the menu bar select Utilities>Disk Utility and then follow the above instructions (I realise you won't be able to do this if you have a disk stuck in the optical disk drive).
Try an SMC and PRAM reset: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3603
Try a Safe Boot: Restart holding down the shift key until you see a grey progress bar. Once it's booted restart as normal from the Apple menu.
If none of this helps, I guess you need to make that call. Good luck.

Can you see Reader 9 inside Applications folder? If yes, then launch Reader and then try to open any pdf via File->Open or drag drop on Reader icon in the doc.
In case you dont find Reader 9 in your Applications folder then you can download and install the latest Reader from the following link: http://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/

  • In Mail on the iPad, is there an easy way to place emails in the junk file like on the iMac?

Is there an easy way to place emails received on my iPad into a junk file like you can do on the iMac by using a junk icon to stop certain emails from reoccuring?

You would need to first set up a junk folder, once that is done, when you are previewing message there is an icon on top of a folder with an arrow inside it, tap on it, this is the move action, in the folder list that now appears tap on the junk folder.

  • Replacing the iMac G4 screen.

Hi, i have searched for ways in how to use your old iMac G4 monitor as an external monitor with no success, so an idea occurred to me, what if i find an LCD monitor that would fit in the casing of the iMac G4?
I know is possible, and that the only hard part would be running the cables down through the arm, but i think i can figure that out, so the question now is which LCD screen/monitor will fit on the iMac G4 casing?

When you replace the original LCD panel in the iMac G4 with a
complete display (not just the panel with inverter, etc inside) the
combined weight of the new or different display may offset the
designed balance the chrome arm's internal springs & dampener
were intended to compensate for, with the original panel.
This may (or not) be a problem. You may have to find the take-
apart images of the chrome arm - posted in another link here,
and see if there is a way to modify the friction dampeners. Or
use a chrome arm from a 20" iMac G4 since it holds a heavier
LCD than the 17" arm was intended to support.
Hopefully some liquid crystal panel display that fits the 17"
display frame won't weigh much more. Or, perhaps some
of the components could be moved into the base of an
otherwise defective iMac G4 if the machine is gutted and
used only for a display support platform.
Sharing a display to expand the desktop of one to the other
can be done, with two healthy Mac computers. Either in a
third-party software or in a display option in Leopard.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How good is  the iMac's internal DAC?

Assuming it has one of course Currently i have my iMac connected straight to an amp and then speakers using phono leads but  was wondering whether I would get much better sound quality if I connected a USB DAC between the iMac and amplifier ,The sound I get is reasonable but could it be bettered with such an addition? Thanks

Yes I set my upper limit with the Fubar II  but may well opt for the cheaper Epiphany.
A few more things to consider:
You won't get much benefit from all the "audiophile" grade parts in the more expensive DAC's unless your amp uses comparable parts; & frankly, the differences are so small to begin with that it is debatable if they can be heard when playing back compressed formats like MP3 or AAC. If you have a lot of 24 bit/96 kHz tracks (substantially better than so-called CD quality) you are more likely to hear a difference than if your stuff is all ripped from CD's using lossy codecs.
iMacs include relatively high quality DAC chips, roughly the same quality as in 'non-audiophile grade' external converters. However, the inside of a computer is not a very friendly environment for a high quality audio DAC. High speed digital signals throughout the computer produce noise that is all but impossible to filter completely out of analog audio outputs, so there is some benefit gained just by locating the converter outside the case, be it in an external USB-connected box or in an amp with an optical or coax digital input.
That may or may not be important to you. If you hear annoying low level whirring type noises in your external speakers when your Mac runs CPU-intensive processes, an external converter should eliminate them. Likewise, an external converter, particularly one with an optical connection, will eliminate any annoying humming noises you might hear.

  • Does the iMac Ship in its' Original Box?

When you order an iMac online from the Apple Store, do they ship it in the original box or do they put the iMac box in another box?
Do you have to sign for the package? Can you instruct Apple to have the delivery company hold the package at the depot rather than try to deliver it when you know you won't be home?
    Thanks
    Kelvin

Both my iMac and MacBook came in a clearly marked box leving to doubt as to what is inside of it. Not good for security, but Apple does require a signature for larger items to be released. If no one is home to receive it, they will leave a notice and you can either arrange for another delivery or pick it up at the depot.

  • Cleaning the iMac screen

    I have a new iMac.
It seems that it has some kind of screen cover , I don't succeed to clean the screen from marks with any product.
Is there  a solution please ?
    Thanks.

Spit Shine with the "Provided" Micro Fibre Cloth is the best way.
    In Detail:
I had my iMac for a few months now (purchased 1qtr 2014) and I have wondered about cleaning the screen for some time.  The thing is, I to tried a non-abrasive cleaning product but it did not work.  All that did was clean off the dust but left some insanely annoying smudge marks.  I wondered for sometime and inquired a far and wide about cleaning the iMac but no one really had an answer that actually worked.
Frustrated, I went back to the original box the product and pulled out the manual but also pulled out a black micro fibre cleaning cloth still sealed inside of the box where the keyboard was. I thought, "sure why not".
I continued to perform a really light strokes with the provided cloth and surprisingly all the smudges and streaks started to disappear. I felt as though I was Kratos killing a Titan or something at this point but beauty is the details.
There were some fine peaces of dirt specs stuck on the screen that the cloth would not get off.  I figured I came this far so I wasn't going to give up.
For some odd reason, I thought, "maybe a spit shine D?" .  LOL, no not hocking at the monitor, that would be silly but then again ... Anyways, I did dap a little salvia off my tongue, on to my finger, and then directly on those tough spots where specs were, and wiped it away with the micro fibre cloth with ease.  This was by far the best way I have ever cleaned the d*am* thing since purchase.

  • Dust inside New iMac. (How to clean)?

I have a question. I just bought a new imac24, the 1st Apple PC I have ever had. I have been a PC user for 14 years (I do not know if the pc was using me or I was using it?) anyway I was always able to blow out the dust that builds up in my pc by opening the case and using an air can but the imac is sealed. Any ideas how to clean out the dust because after awhile it is bound to get dusty inside.. Thanks

there is no user servicable access. if U do open it you will void the warranty.
But as I live in a very dusty enviorment i did something to take care of the same concern.
I took one of my wife's silk scarves (really fine pattern for venting) and had it sewed into an envelope shape, open on one long side. this I then slip over the top of the iMac to keep out dust. it covers the vents and allows air circulation at the same time. I did check it out to see if my idea was working and it was dirty after about two weeks. washed it out and i feel it is doing what i intended.
I did have to replace my wife's scarf.

  • Annoying clicking noise inside my iMac

    Hi,
I recently bought an iMac 3.06GHz and ever since I got it there has been an annoying clicking noise coming from inside the display. I had read loads of topics of this clicking whilst in sleep mode, or whilst it's doing something else, but literally, as I'm typing now, Safari is the only extra program running on my Mac and it's clicking, then stopping, then clicking some more etc.
I can best describe it as someone running a small stick over a set of small metal railings very fast and a bit more high pitched. If you catch my drift?!
I just can't seem to find a solution on the forums, so maybe I've missed it or something, but any help from you guys would be extremely well received.
    Thanks.

    Hi, thanks for the welcome
You think it's the hard drive? Eek, was hoping I wouldn't get that answer. What's my best option would you say? If I took it to an Apple Store, would they repair it for me? Surely I'm covered. I've only had my iMac since September.
Thanks for your responses. I shall be investing in an external hard drive for back up purposes.
Any additional info is still welcome. Thanks.

Can you post the Kernel Panic report, it may offer some clues:
Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic
However, I'm guessing that incompatible RAM is the likely problem, especially if the problem goes away when you revert to the original RAM. It's worth mentioning that there have been many, many reports on here where users have experienced KP's after upgrading to 32gb of RAM. Swapping the RAM for a known 'good' brand usually solves the problem.
These two companies are regularly recommended as being the best places to buy from and they'll guarantee their RAM works:
