Instability of network with multiple AP's (X2000, WRT54G)

I have a  network consisting of ADSL modem, connected to an old Linksys wired router, which is acting as a firewall and DHCP server. Then I have connected two Linksys X2000's acting as wireless AP's via wired connection to the old router, and one WRT54G (not sure about the exact model number, as I'm currently off-site). The X2000's are connected to the LAN via Ethernet port 1.
Here is the topology:
ADSL modem
|
Linksys DSL/Cable router
| |
X2000 X2000
|
WRT54G
I have enabled DHCP server on the Linksys DSL/Cable router, and disabled it on the AP's. The SSID is same on all three AP's. The Channels are set on 1, 6 and 11, and they are on Auto (mixed) mode. The network security is currently disabled.
Now, the network is unstable, and I am not able to properly diagnose the problem. When I have only one of the X2000's turned on, it appears to work fine. When I turn on the second, it also appears to work fine. When I connect on through wireless, the ping response is good, and while walking towards the periphery of the first AP, towards the range of second, no  ping response stops, but the laptop switches to the 2nd AP. After that, I am not able to get any ping response no matter whether external or internal IP, except for the IP of the AP where I am currently connected to. Sometimes I may be able to ping also the main router, and the other AP's. If I restart the AP, I am again able to connect to internet, and also to ping internal IP's, and all seems to work fine, but after some time I am getting complaints from users that clients are not able to connect to internet.
I have tried to review my X2000 configuration carefully, but I just can't seem to realize what I am doing wrong.
Could you please point me to the right direction?
Thanks

Nah, it did not resolve the issue.
The X2000's are acting really in a weird way. I just don't get it what is going wrong. If I have only one X2000 in the network, everything seems to work fine, but as soon as I connect the 2nd one, the problems start.
I tried using the DHCP Relay as you suggested, but also that did not work.
In the following thread there was a comment that X2000 is not capable sharing the connection via LAN port, which sounds very strange to me. Do I really have to buy new hardware to solve this?

I would like to get more step-by-step troubleshooting suggestions, to check the router routing tables and DNS configuation.
Here is my current routing table when connected to X2000 via wireless - and everything works correctly for now, on my laptop. But the 2nd X2000 segment in not working. To me it seems they disable each other, and I can't figure out what goes wrong and where.

  • Using ISP network with multiple private spans in a bridged/LAN manner?

Dear all - this is a bit a of concept question. But it seems an obvious and generic requirement - but I can't find a nice, neat and simple solution? Or maybe I can't see the forest for the trees? Help/pointers would be appreciated - the first bit is the connectivity, I'll worry about the security issues once this has been put to bed.
I need a WAN/LAN network with 30 plus nodes. My IPS will supply a nice fibre internet connection per node with fixed public IP's, each node has a /28 span (5 usable Public IPs) - so I have the foundation for an 'any to any' network (which I need) via these public IPs. I now need to expand the IP host connectivity behind the ISP supplied CPE. This expansions needs to be a set of private networks (say) 192.168.x.0/24 - with x being 1 to 30. - But I still need the 'any to any' connectivity.
A (rather poor) ascii picture of what I need:
    '                                                                   |          Internet         |
    192.168.1.100/24 <---->ISP CPE/28 <-------> |                               |
    192.168.2.100/24 <---->ISP CPE/28 <-------> |                               |
    Etc up 'till 192.168.30.100/24                        |                               |
                                                                        |_________________|
The Internet becomes no more than a 30 port switch - with any 192.168.x.y being able to ping any other 192.168.x.y node
    Any takers?

    Hello,
Just to make sure I have it correctly, you have several sites each with their own public addresses, which then have a private address range network behind them, and they need to all be able to communicate?
If so the solution would be site-to-site VPN tunnels.  That way each client could communicate with every other client using the private addresses, and all of the traffic going out over the ISPs public network would be encrypted.  This would involve a lot of tunnels so you would need a pretty beefy router, but that should give you what you are looking for.
Hope I understood it correctly and this helps,

  • Creating a single network with multiple airports

    Hello -
I have been having trouble combining all of my airport devices into one single network.    I currently have one Airport Extreme (Gen 2) and two Airport Express (802.11n) devices to cover my home.  I have significant difficulty with range on the devices.    Right now each of the devices are connected separately via anethernet cable to a switch that then is connected to my home FIOS router.    All of my best efforts at bridging the devices with my Extreme as the primary network have failed.   Is it possible to have each of the Airport devices act as one network with this configuration?
    Thank you.
    Don

    Thanks for the update.
Power up one AirPort Express only, open up AirPort Utillty 5.6, select that AirPort Express, and click Manual Setup.
If the Express does not appear in AirPort Utility, perform a Factory Default Reset on the device as follows:
Power off the Express for a minute
Hold in the reset button on the Express and keep holding it for an additional 9-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow 40-45 seconds for the Express to display a slow blinking amber light
Then try AirPort Utility 5.6 and Manual Setup again and it should "see" the Express
Click the Base Station tab below the icons to assign a device name to the Express....AirPort Express 1, for example, a device password and adjust Time Zone settings.
Click the Wireless tab and assign the exact same settings that you used on the AirPort Extreme to the AirPort Express.  The Radio Mode of the Express may not have an "Automatic" setting, so the default "802.11n (802.11 b/g compatible" setting would be a good choice.
Click the Internet icon and then the Internet Connection tab and assign the exact same settings that the AirPort Extreme is using....Connect Using = Ethernet and Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode).
Click Update and allow 40-45 seconds for the AirPort Express to display a green light. Then, power it off.
Configure the other AirPort Express exactly the same way as AirPort Express 1, except that you will give it a different name under the Base Station tab, AirPort Express 2....for example....to keep everything straight.
Once you have a green light on AirPort Express 2, power it off.
Power of the entire network now...all devices....in any order that you wish
    Wait a minute
Start the FIOS modem/router first and let it run a minute by itself
Start the AirPort Extreme the same way
Start AirPort Express 1 the same way
Start AirPort Express 2 the same way
Continue starting devices one at a time a minute apart until the entire network is back up and running
The network should be operating correctly at this point and your Mac should automatically pick up a signal from the AirPort that is providing the strongest signal as it moves around the house.
To confirm that this is the case, locate the Mac very close to the AirPort Extreme for a minute
Hold down the option key on the Mac while you click on the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the screen
Note the BSSID. That is the AirPort ID of the device to which the Mac is connected
Move the Mac close to an AirPort Express, wait a minute, then check the BSSID. It should be a different ID
Check the other AirPort Express the same way, it should be a different ID

  • How can I get Firefox to run on a network with multiple users logging on with the same user name and password?

I am trying to get Firefox running on a large network where I have multiple users that log on with the same user name and password. The problem is that when another user logs on to another computer the message comes up that their is already an instance of firefox running on that computer even though there really isn't. Only one instance can be run on the network at one time. I believe it is because firefox stores a shared profile as it thinks it is actually the same user even though it is being run on another computer. I repeat that each user that logs on uses the same user name and password but on different computers.

  • Is there a way to run a family network with multiple Apple ID's?

My wife and I (married one week) have both individually and together been using Apple products for awhile. I have been so pleased that I decided that
in our house I was going to slowly build an Apple network. Our base station is an Airport Extreme, I have two (soon to be more) rooms with in wall speakers that are wired to Airport Expresses for Airplay purposes, and two Apple TV's. I downloaded the Apple Remote app on my iPhone and have been extremely happy walking into a room and starting up music. I encountered a problem though and in my reading, it appears to be a terrible flaw in Apple's Home Share. My wife has her own Macbook and iPhone under her own Apple ID. And why shouldn't she? She has her own iWork for her job, contacts, email, Photo Stream, and settings. But now we live under one roof. While we are individuals, we are building a household. There are certain things like music and movies that we should not have to have two computers for. Her Macbook is work oriented and has very little media on it. My iMac however has been a central point for all media in the house. As I said before I use the Apple Remote app to control my computer for Airplay and to control the Apple TV's. Eager to participate, she downloaded the app, but my library does not appear because her ID is different. There was a time when she could play my library through her iTunes when she was on my network. All I had to do was give her my password. This is no longer the case. Before I get sent to the generic Apple FAQ, you should know I have read it. The suggestion to make seperate login accounts on my computer and share the library. This still keeps them seperate. She would still have to go into the office, and switch accounts and then return to the room where she was to start the music. And then I would have to change it back to regain control. She can still use Airplay to play what is on her phone, but there is very little media there and it is also a battery drain to do so. My iMac has steady power and steady signal. I am open to suggestions if someone has found a way around this issue. But Apple should know that for a company that advertises in promoting family, this restriction *****. I'm sure they do it in the name of anti-piracy, but their 5 device rule and super security already did that.
    Terry Monaghan

Think of all this as two entities, 1. your Apple ID's and 2. Apple services (and by services I mean iCloud, iTunes, Home Sharing, Messages, FaceTime, Support Communities etc etc).
You can choose to use a different ID for each service, thereby creating the flexibility you are looking for.
For iCloud (which syncs contacts, mail, calendars etc) I suggest you each use your own ID, this means you will have your own contacts etc.
For iTunes, you might use separate ID's or you might both use the same one, I make no suggestion here because there are benefits to both ways. You may want to keep your music, movie, books and app purchases separate or you may want to unite them to avoid potentially paying for things twice.
For Home Sharing I suggest you use just one ID, it doesn't matter who's it is, so long as you both use the same one, this will ensure that any device using home Sharing can see and play the content from anyone's library on the same network (regardless of which ID it uses for iTunes) that is logged into the same home sharing account.

  • How can I use Apple Caching Service on a Network with Multiple Public IPs?

    Hello!
I help manage a network of ~4000 clients for a small liberal arts college in Michigan. I'm looking into the possibility of implimenting Apple Caching Server for our network.
We have one 400mbit pipe out to the internet, and all of our clients are given public-facing IPs to the internet. A caching server would be great, especially on update days. All wireless clients are on the same subnet, which is where I'd like the server to be serving the cached copies.
I have installed Mavericks on a fresh machine, downloaded OS X Server 3.0.3, and attempted to start the caching service. This is what I get.
    Unable to start service.
Caching cannot be run on a public network. Consult documentation.
How can I get this up and running?

The way the Caching server works is that the server will be accessing the Internet and when doing so traffic will be coming from it via a particular public IP address. Usually this will not be the address of the server itelf but your router as for most networks NAT is used. In this by far more common scenario the client Macs (and likely iOS devices) will be going through the same router and hence show up via the same public IP address.
If the client request is the same as the address registered via the Caching server then Apple redirect the request via the Caching server.
The setup would look something like this -
               Internet
                    |
                Router (with NAT)
                    |
      (LAN)     +------Caching Server-----Client devices
With this setup because everything is using the same public IP address Apple can reasonably assume everything is on the same network and trigger a redirection to your Caching server.
If you try a setup like the following with the Caching server having its own public IP it will not work because the Caching server and client devices will have different public IP addresses
               Internet
                   |
               Router (no NAT)-------------------+
                   |                                      |
                Firewall (with NAT)       Caching Server
                   |                                      |
                   |                                      |
    (LAN)     +-----Client devices-----------+-----------
Your configuration as described is more like the following
               Internet
                   |
               Router (no NAT)
                   |
    (LAN)     +------Caching Server-----Client devices
With yours not having NAT each device has its own public IP address including the Caching server and Apple cannot redirect traffic as it thinks they are on different networks.

  • Office 2010 & 2007 - Excel and Access File Locking Out On the Network With Multiple Users

This is also posted in the Office 2010 - IT Pro General Discussions, but was suggested to repost here, since a definitive answer was not found.
    Hi,
An issue that's happening is that Excel and Access files are locking on the network. We're currently using Office 2007 and 2010.
Here are some different scenarios that are happening:
When opening the file it is locked out by “User X” which is the person that has the file locked out and no one else can open the file.
When opening the file it is locked out by “User Y” which is NOT the actual person, but is locked out by “User X” and no one else can access the file.
When opening the file  it is locked out by “…another user” which is generic and no one else can access the file.
The two more common events are incident 1 and 2 with 3 happening the less common.
This message will continue until the sessions are closed through computer management on the file server.
The file server is running Windows Server 2003.
This does happen on both Windows XP and Windows 7 clients.
This does happen for users using Office 2007 and Office 2010.
There are two sets of Office 2010 Users when it comes to patches. Everyone has the most current patches with Office 2010 SP2 while anyone that has Microsoft Project 2010 is using all the current update before Office 2010 SP2.
All users that are using Office 2007 have all the current patches and service packs.
Another variable is that we have users that will leave a file open on the network for 3+ days and after a while it will lock the file out.
Also we have Shadow Copy that runs daily on the system which I'm not for sure if that impacts anything if a file is opening during that time.
Any ideas on how to mitigate the lock out issues would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Binary Process
Edit November 12, 2013: This issue can occur if and if not another person actually has the file open. If the person doesn't have the file open then there is a hung connection which needs to be disconnected by going to the Computer Management of the File
    server.

    Hi Binary,
I know that the description of the hotfix does not relate to the issue. The purpose is to install it for upgrading SMB related file.
A similar issue I encountered before:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/b7fcc59b-52d9-4a02-863a-1a529bcb8cb1/temp-doc-etc-files-dont-close-after-a-file-closes-this-causes-locked-files?forum=winserverfiles
It is resolved by upgrading SMB files so maybe it will help on your case.

  • Extend wireless network with multiple airport express and netgear powerline

I currently have the following network configuration:
    1. Using ATT u-verse (2-wire 3800HGV-B "modem") to internet
    2. Disabled the u-verse modem wireless router, and have connected an Apple Time Capsule wireless router (on a DMZ)
    3. Have four Netgear XAVB5001 powerline adapters connected to the time capsule (for our iMac desktops and the Apple TV)
    4. Have an Airport Express wirelessly connected to the time capsule to extend range (for our iPhones and iPad)
All this is currently working. What I would like to do is the following, keeping 1-3 above the same:
    4. Connect the airport express to the time capsule via Netgear XAVB5101 powerline adapter (instead of wirelessly connecting to the time capsule as it is today) and use it to extend the wireless range of the time capsule
    5. Add ANOTHER airport express to the time capsule via powerline adapter (and extend the wireless range elsewhere in the house).
Does anyone have any experience with this kind of setup and can assure that it would work? (I'm trying to decide whether to spring for a couple more powerline adapters and another airport express)
    Thanks in advance!
    Dave

I had a VERY similar problem:  I was trying to extend my wireless network using a hardwired ethernet connection from Airport Extreme to my Time Capsule.  Every time I plugged in the wire to the TC, everything disappeared.  Unplugged, and boom.  Came back.
    Here's how I solved it:
Go into Airport Utility and select the unit you are trying to use as a wireless extender and choose to edit it.  Then, on the wireless tab select CREATE a wireless network.  But, give it the exact same name and password.  This is completely counter-intuitive.  You would think to choose EXTEND, but this would be wrong.  Next choose the network tab.  And, select Router mode to Bridge (off).
By choosing the same name and password, your phone, laptop, etc. will think it's on the same network and move seamlessly from one to the other.
See if this fixes your issue.  Fixed mine instantly.  AND, it only took 3 painstaking hours of checking ethernet connections and rewiring jacks, etc. to figure it out.  LOL

  • ARD 3.1 on a Cisco network with multiple VLANs

I really hope someone can help me with this one because it's giving me all sorts of headaches.
I manage all the IT for a large elementary school. We have Macs all over the building. (unfortunately many are still OS 9 Macs) As we replace and add new machines we have some that are wired in the network and some that are wireless. This is creating a rather messy issue with ARD. The backend of our network is running Cisco hardware. Our networking department has split our wired and wireless network on to separate VLANs. If I connect wirelessly to the network from my laptop, I can see the wireless Macs. If I connect through a wired connection I can see the wired machines. If I have both turned on, I tend to get problems with ARD freezing up when it tries to scan the local network. If I scan the wired network and switch to a wireless connection, everything works until the DHCP lease expires on the machines overnight and they get new IP addresses. I'm pretty sure this has to do with Bonjour and mDNS.
Can anyone tell me what information to provide my networking department to get Bonjour and mDNS working across these two VLANs. We have a great networking department but Bonjour and mDNS is not something they deal with much and they aren't Mac fans so this gets put way on the back burner.

  • Networking with Multiple Airport Express'

I am using a new Airport Extreme 802.11n as a router in a home network that is in an extremely large house. I also have 3 new Airport Express' connected to the network. My question is should the settings in the Airport Utility be "Join an existing network" or 'Extend an existing network' for each Airport Express' or some combination of either based on which express is first in closest proximity to the Airport Extreme.
    Thanks, JB

I've only got the two running now, and the signal at the far end is dramatically better than without.
I don't think it decreases bandwidth for each device. Each machine's bandwidth decreases a little for the overhead, but it is not cumulative.
On a side note, when I added the New Airport Express, I had an absolutely horrible time getting it all to work correctly and I think I had similar symptoms as you are describing. I was able to differentiate which base station I had connected with because the new Airport Extreme was n-band and the main stations is an old g-band. So, by holding down the option key when selecting the airport menu, I could easily see the bandwidth going above 54. I hope you're laughing as I later realized that the MAC address of the base station you are connected to shows up in the menu with option held down, also.
Everything seemed to be connected right, but it just wasn't working. I ended up resetting both devices and started from scratch. Just about when I was going to give up and just extend the network, my WDS connections worked and I haven't had any problems.
Before I realized that the network wasn't configured correctly, I thought my old Airport Extreme was going bad. It was freezing up and I had to restart it to get an internet connection. Ever since I fixed the WDS network, I don't have any problems with it. I think the two base stations were jamming each other.

  • AEX network with multiple peripherals

I am having trouble setting up an AEX network in So Cal with a recent switch to Time Warner.  Able to get one laptop on the network, other devices won't connect to the internet.  I have tried powering down everything; power off for 60+ secs, cable removed from modem, then re-attach Ethernet cable to AEX base station.  Same results.  Any advice would be appreciated.

    Try the following:
Push the reset button on the modem (if available)
    Power down the modem
Pull the battery from the modem (if easily accessible)
Power down everything else on the network...all devices....order is not important
Wait at least 30 minutes, longer will not hurt
Connect the modem to the AirPort Extreme's WAN port (circle of dots icon)
Power up the modem and let it run for 5 minutes by itself
Power up the AirPort Extreme the same way
Power up each other device one at a time the same way about a minute apart
    Check for proper network operation.
The reason for the extended power down on the modem is that while your service provider will tell you that the modem will reset in a few minutes.....what they won't tell you is that it often takes 15-20 minutes for the equipment back at the main offer to fully reset so that a fresh IP address will issued. If you don't get a "fresh" connection, you will continue to have problems.
Some ISPs take even longer. I had one a few years ago that took 2-3 hours, on average, to reset the connection, yet they would never admit it.

  • How do you properly set up a home network with multiple devices?  I have a macbook pro, an iMac, and several other phones, tablets, roku devices, etc.  Everything works properly except for when I try to access the other computer through the network.

I have an iMac and a macbook pro that I used to be able to share files between but ever since I moved 3 months ago I can't get it to work.  Also, now my phone and my wife's phone are inseparably connected.  She seems to be getting all of my text messages but I don't get hers.  We also bought new computers right before we moved so that might have something to do with it.  Both computers are on my account and have my name.  Thanks in advance, it would be nice to get this working again - tired of walking ten feet with a flash drive to share files  : )

  • Need help adding wifi to a wired network with multiple hardwired ethernet

    Hello all ,
I have a question that I can't seem to find the exact answer for and so I solicit your help.
I am renovating a large old farm which has 4 main buildings, arranged in a line that spans 150 feet in length. I had installed hardwire ethernet to each of the buildings all connected to an ethernet Gigabit switch which is connected top the adsl modem/router. What I wish to do is to connect a wireless access point/borne/or whatever is needed to the ethernet access point in each building giving me wireless capacity in each . My main access point is 100 feet or more from the farthest building and since this a farm dating from 1845 , and made of stone , a 100% wireless networks doesn't seem feasable.
Do I need to use aps? ethernet bridges? any suggestions are very welcome

It sounds, based on your network description, that you should be able to set up a "roaming" network by inserting a 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) in each of the farm buildings that are attached to the Ethernet backbone that you installed.
For more information about a roaming network see pages 40 - 41 in the following Apple document: Designing AirPort Networks Using AirPort Utility

  • On a network with multiple airports (extreme, express, + time capsule), do they all have to be "guest" capable devices in order to offer guest networking?

Here's the situation: I have three older devices:
    a1254 Time Capsule
    a1134 airport extreme
    a1264 express
none of these support guest networking, according to Apple. If I add a newer Extreme (3rd gen or higher) that support guest networks, will that be possible to offer to guests within range of the Extreme, -OR- do I have to upgrade my entire network of Apple wifi devices? Help appreciated, esp if you have such a setup. thanks!

The problem here is guest network only works if the Apple Router is indeed the main router.. you cannot setup guest network on a bridged router. Although it appears you can, it doesn't actually work.
You could modify the network setup..
Use one device dedicated to a secondary guest network. This would actually work better than using guest but you should have some way to prevent access to computers from guest.. that may be easy or hard depending on the modem you are using.

  • Having trouble with multiple wireless users on WRT54G router

Basically, there are 3 of us wirelessly sharing the internet via a linksys WRT54G router. I have our router password-protected, to avoid randoms stealing out broadband. I am a Mac user (3 year old computer), the other 2 are on PC laptops.
At the moment, I have an excellent internet connection, and it's working just fine. However, if my room mate connects with their laptop (a fairly new model), my internet connection stops working. I still have a signal, but it just really slows down/often stops working entirely. It's  as if their wireless connection takes priority and ignores mine (essentially nullifying the router's purpose).
Has anyone come across a problem like this before? Your assistance would be super helpful and appreciated.

Hi, perhaps you may try the following steps to improve the performance of your router:
    • Upgrade the router’s firmware
    • Reset the router after the firmware upgrade
    • Optimize the router’s wireless settings
    • Use a wifi analyzer like http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/ to set a non overlapping channel to the router
    • Relocate the router on a more central location for better wireless coverage
    • Avoid placing the router on a glass or metallic surface
