I upgraded to IOS 5.1 and the phone doesn't work right

I upgraded my phone to IOS 5.1 and the phone functionality doesn't work right. If I make a call, once connected I go back to the main menu and can't get to the phone controls (including the ones to hang up). yeah i tried that icloud and recieved a mssg yesterday from my email that says "

I'm sorry for the delay in my response but I was away for the weekend. I went through and tried all of above and still not working. To answer the question about connecting to another router ie Starbucks was not tried as I haven't had a chance to get over there yet, BUT I do have hot spot on my iPhone and I don't see that either. Currently I connected to the internet through the hot spot using Bluetooth, so I am able to use it but only if my phone is around. It is the only way that I can get the iPad online currently.
As for the answer regarding SSID/router changes, I am not very technologically sauvy but I do know that it was working perfectly for several months and just suddenly stopped connecting, but as I mentioned above every other device connects to the router in my house and nothing has been changed or added. It does seem weird that it won't find my iPhone when the hot spot is on and every other device will.
Thank you all for your responses, and please keep them coming. Is there anyway that maybe I changed a setting on my iPad accidentally that I am not aware of? By that I mean other than the obvious wifi on/off switch. I keep hoping the answer will be something silly, obvious and a quick fix.

Is there any way to retrieve an MMS/photo that has been deleted from iphone and the phone has since been backed up?

I received some MMS messages a while back and have backe dup my phone since then. I now want to get these messages back, but they are obviously gone from my phone. Is there any way to retrieve them? I'm guessing no, but any input would be welcomed.

Are the charger nd cable original Apple parts or third-party? There have been a lot of problems ith third party cables and chargers since iOS 7 - checks for compatibility with Apple specs.
Try another charger and cable to see if that makes a difference.

I have two emails on my iphone. I try to send from my default email address, but it turns out that the message is being sent by my gmail account. This is frustrating and annoying, because I use the accounts for different purposes. My server set ups are correct. There is no quick and easy way to silence all alerts in iOS while allowing the phone to ring. The alarm will always sound, even if the silent switch is activated (provided the phone is not powered off entirely).
Many people have asked for a 'bedside mode' similar to that offered by other smartphones. In this state, the alarm would still sound if set, and the phone would ring for incoming calls, but no other alerts will sound.
Though it can't be done in software settings, the equivalent can easily be acheived by plugging your headphones into the phone. The alarm and ringer will still sound through the phone speaker, but all other alerts will play only through the headphones.

Thanks Chris for your advice. I have done the restoration from both the device and computer as a new device but it doesn't help. Even I have restored my device to the factory settings with standard apps in it without installing any other additional apps, the phone heats up & I have to recharge at least 3 times per day. This is abnormal to me.

The screen you're seeing on your iPhone indicates it is in recovery mode. Now since the device is not appearing in iTunes on your PC, first follow the steps in this article:
