Install 10.4.10 on external for Intel, How ?

Hi,
I want to create an external firewire startup boot drive running 10.4.10 (Tiger) for my
Intel processor Mac Book Pro.
I just realized that I can't start up my MacBook Pro via an external drive
because I can't install a system on the external drive because the boxed
DVD of Tiger MA453Z/A I have is only for PowerPC macs.
When i insert the DVD and launch the installer it tells me :
"Mac OS X 10.4 cannot be installed on this machine" even though it's running
10.4.10. It should really say can't install on an Intel mac?
(MA453Z/A installs 10.4.6)
I guess I'm asking where can I buy a 10.4 Tiger install DVD for Intel and how
can I be sure it will install on, create a working boot drive for Intel macs ?
What is the part number of the install DVD that will boot an Intel Mac?
(because I know it's not "MA453Z/A")
Points to consider :
An external drive must be formatted "GUID Partition Table" to be used as a boot drive for an Intel mac.

The specific system disks for each Mac model are designed to only start up/install on that model, and they've never been available to buy. In addition, since every Intel Mac came with Tiger pre-installed, Apple made the decision not to release an Intel-compatible retail version. Which makes it doubly important not to lose the disks!
A good idea, actually, is to make copies of them. You can use Disk Utility to do this:
- Insert each disk, launch Disk Utility. In its left-hand pane, find the disk, and select the lower CD image (it'll say something like "Mac OS X Install" or "System Restore".
- Go to FIle - New - Disk Image From (cd name). For "Image Format" choose "DVD/CD master" and Encryption should be None. Save the new image to your desktop, make sure that the name of the disk image includes the disk number (eg 1 of 3, if you have 3 disks). You'll end up with a ".cdr" file.
- Do this for each disk. You should now have a list of .cdr images in Disk Utility's left pane.
- Put a blank CD or DVD (depending on the original media) into your drive, highlight the first image in the list, and click Burn. Repeat for the other images. Once duplicated, you can delete the disk images from your desktop.
- Put the copies somewhere safe!
(There's a Disk Copy function in Toast Titanium, if you own that, which is a bit more intuitive.)
Good luck
Matt

  • I have Mountain Lion OS Install CD downloaded onto my external hard drive, how do I use this to upgrade from Leopard

Current computer that I just bought used is operating on Leopard 10.5.8
I have Mountain Lion OS X CD installation files downloaded on my external hard drive from another Mac that I have owned.
How do I use my external HD to download and Install Mountain OS X wizard.
Is the only way to do this to buy a copy of snow leopard and then once upgrading to that, plug in my external HD and then access the Mtn install file as I would if I had the installation CD?
When I try to access the install file from my external HD, i get to the installation window and then when I am to select a hard drive to install it on I receuve a red exclamation mark error that says it can not be written to the HD. Why is this? Because I'm not on snow leopard but rather leopard?

As you have the installer on a DVD, you can do a trick that consists in formatting the hard drive, and then, install Mountain Lion.
First, make a backup of your files with Time Machine > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427 I recommend Time Machine because it will be easier to restore your files later.
Then, insert the DVD with Mountain Lion and hold the C key while your Mac is starting, so you will see a window with different options. Open Disk Utility, choose Macintosh HD in the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the drive.
After erasing the drive, you can install Mountain Lion. Close Disk Utility and install it. During the initial setup, it will ask you to restore your files, so plug the external drive with the backup and follow its steps. Note that PowerPC apps aren't compatible

  • Can I install Boot Camp on an external disk?

I have a MacBook Air ( version 3,2) and I am running out of space to install Boot Camp. I use Windows 7 by the way.
Can I install Boot Camp on an external disk? How do I go about doing this? I have an Apple external super drive and I have two USB ports on my computer.
Can I install the mac operating system on the external disk including the Applications and then install Boot Camp as per usual? How would I get the Windows 7 program to install on the external disk using the superdrive that I have?

BootCamp will only install on an internal disk.
If you are wiling to do some work,  do some Google searches, use third party tools, and make your own custom Windows install disc, then you might be able to get what you want, but there is no guarantee that it will work on your specific hardware.
I researched this topic a year or two ago and found people claiming that using rEFIt and custom built Windows install discs, that they were able to do what you seek.  After reading through all the instructions, I found it much easier to upgrade the HD in my MacBookPro to a 500GB drive and just installed my BootCamp on the spare 180GB space from the upgrade.  That took me a little over an afternoon, and it was fully supported...

  • How to Install Solaris for Intel so that it boots off from a boot floppy?

    Hi all,
Sorry to bother you with this one (I went through all documentations/manuals and could not find straight answers to following
    specific questions):
I have one hard drive with 1st partition used by Windows XP and a second partition that's a blank FAT 32 (using Partition Magic)
I want to use for Solaris for Intel.
    My very specific questions:
(1)That blank Fat32 partition: can I run the Solaris install over it ..or should I absolutely make sure that it's a blank UFS formatted
partition? I am asking you that because all manuals (except one) pretend that I can run my Solaris install on a blank Fat partition...
but I believe that documentation at multiboot.solaris-x86.org stresses that if the partition is not a blank UFS one, it wont install Solaris
(2)As you already know, some Oses like Linux or FreeBSD can be installed on a partition and be booted off a boot floppy.
So without that boot floppy, no trace of the OS. How can I do that with Solaris for Intel. I want my Solaris to boot off a boot floppy only.
BTW, I currently have Solaris 7 for Intel.
    Thanks for the answers.

(1)That blank Fat32 partition: can I run the Solaris install over it ..or should I absolutely make sure that it's a blank UFS formatted You can install Solaris to that blank FAT32 drive but Solaris WILL convert it to UFS BEFORE doing the install. In other words, after the install it will be UFS and not FAT32 anymore.
So without that boot floppy, no trace of the OS. How can I do that with Solaris for Intel. I want my Solaris to boot off a boot floppy only. Not that I know of. Some people have reported booting Solaris off of a USB drive though.

  • Fail to install solaris 8 for intel

hello. i downloaded three files and made a CD for each one. but during the installing on a Dell PowerEdge 6450
(4 x Pentium III 550)which has two AIC 7899 ultra160/m SCSI adapters and a Dell PERC RAID controller (i note they are not included in the hardware compatibility list of solaris 8 for
intel), the install process stopped when it was "I2O Nexus:
initializing IO processor 0" and didn't go any further. when i attempt to intall it on another machine(2 x PIII 1000) which has a AIC 7892 ultra160/m SCSI adapter, the process
stopped saying "no disks that meet the criteria in the solaris installer documentation found" after solaris web start began to run. before this, it has reported resource conflict of PNP0C01
and ISY0050. and the installing stopped when "using RPC bootparams for network configuration information" on a PIII 800 PC. what's wrong with my installing. is it due to the incompatibility of hardware or something else?how to resolve it if possible? help is in need very much.besides, what does
DCA mean?sorry, i'm a newbie in this field.
    thanks

    Hi,
Problem with PERC RAID controller card.
You try to install the driver for AIC 7899 and Dell PERC RAID controller card. In dell computers, they have dell PERC RAID controller driver for Solaris 7 version. They don't have the driver for solaris 8 version.
You can download driver for SCSI AIC 7899 from this URL:
    http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/driverdetail.html?cat=/Product/ASC-39160&filekey=u160_slrs_v121_dd.img.Z
Then you check with your local dell support provider for PERC RAID controller driver for solaris 7 and solaris 8.
    Thanks.
    revert back.

  • Can I install PS CC on an external HDD for portability? [was: Retire01]

Can I instal PS CC on an external HDD so that I can take it from place to place??

When you activate Photoshop (most likely CC too) Adobe's activation servers write hidden credentials onto you system. Most likely these are on you system boot drive.  Also when programs are install onto a system many settings for the Program are recorded into the Operating System Configuration.   So If you install CC onto an external drive though the programs install tree will be on the external drive many system configuration and authorizing files will not be on that drive.

  • How do i Install Win 7 to an External HD

I have iMac 27" 3ghz Intel core 2 duo and love it! I am also a gamer and despise the fact that gaming studios don't make enough games for Macs. So I've tried using Win XP on my mac via boot-camp by dual booting but was not satisfied and didn't like having windows software directly on my apple machine. I don't want to give up gaming entirely on computers so........
I would like to install Win 7 to my External HD (LACIE Rugged ALL-Terrain 250GB 5400 RPM 2.5" USB 2.0 / IEEE 1394a / 1394b External Hard Drive), but i have heard that Win 7 is a little tricky when trying to install it on a machine with multiple HD's using different Operating Systems. Im not quite sure what all the issues are, but if you know how to properly install Win 7 on to an external HD so i can dual boot from that HD to play windows based games than please help! =)

I've not tried it myself, but I've read that if you use a third-party EFI tool like "rEFIt" and you are willing to make a custom install disc (DVD), it is possible. Just do a little Google searching and you should find the same links I found that talk about doing this.
Another thing I have not tried, but should theoretically work would be to use a "boot from VHD" configuration, where you put the VHD on an external drive. I don't remember where I read about booting Windows 7 from a VHD, but I suspect it was on MSDN.

  • Trouble with installing 10.5 from an external firewire drive

I have a family pack of 10.5 and installed it just fine on my macbook. But, I'm having trouble getting my imac DVD player to read the DVD. It just spins and spits it out, and spins and spits it out. The imac is not covered under applecare so spending money to get the DVD drive fixed (which I barely use) is not something I want to do right now.
Anyway, I followed instructions on a this website to install 10.5 from an external firewire drive. (http://iuseapple.com/blog/apple-how-to/advanced-os-x/2007/10/29/how-to-install-l eopard-from-external-firewire-hard-drive/)
But I get stuck and am not able to actually get my imac to boot from the installer. Basically, I am able to use disk utility to create a copy of the disk image on my macbook. That resulting file ends in ".cdr" and it mounts when I double click it.
And I partitioned my firewire hard drive without problems.
I think I'm messing up when it comes to doing the restore. If I try to drag the .dmg mounted file in to the "source" it doesn't work (is greyed out). If I try to drag the mounted .dmg there than it works, but I get an error when I click "restore" (something about scans and images not being found). I tried physically copying the .dmg file onto the partition, but then when I plugged the HD into my imac, I wasn't able to get the imac to boot from the installer.
What am I doing wrong? If someone could walk me through these last steps I'd appreciate it!

Okay I finally got around to creating the bootable disk image of 10.5 using Carbon Copy Cloner. Still my iMac is not booting from the firewire drive!
Here's a recap of everything I've tried. I'm at a complete loss now!
    - I partitioned the HD into 2 partitions-- a 10gig one for the 10.5 install, the then the rest for Time Machine. I make the partition in Disk Utility on my MacBook.
    - I've partitioned the drive a few times-- always partitioning it in APM format (b/c it needs to boot my non-intel iMac).
    - I've created the disk image using "restore" in disk utility. I've again tried this a few times.
    - I am able to boot my MacBook from the disk image I create! So I know the FW drive is able to be used to boot from!
    - Here's what I've tried in terms of getting the iMac to boot from the FW drive. It always just boots to my internal drive instead. Sometimes I briefly see a folder and question mark. I've tried all 3 FW ports. I've selected the install partition at start up in preferences. I've also held down the option key at start up (only my internal drive shows) and I've held down command-option-shift-delete and again I get the question mark and it boots to my internal drive.
    - And I installed Carbon Copy Cloner and made the disk image that way on my macbook. Still, I tried everything and the iMac is not able to boot from the firewire drive!
Since my DVD drive is broken, this is the only way for me to install 10.5! Help!

  • Can I install a program on an External Hard Drive?

I have an 500 GB external hard drive that I attach to my MBP to store movies and my aperture picture libraries. When I first got it, I created three Mac OS Extended (journaled) partitions, one for movies, one for pictures and the other one for “extras”. I’d like to install Adobe Photoshop on my external hard drive, so I’d like to know if there is a way to make any one of my three partitions operate as if they were a system partition. Can I install an application in an external hard drive? Can I run an application from an external hard drive? Which formatting solution could help me achieve what I want? Is this even possible? Any suggestions?

There are many applications that are happy to be installed on a partition other than the boot partition. However, if the Adobe Photoshop installer does no present you with that option I wouldn't. You could always copy it across post-installation to see if it will work. Updating my present issues.
