Install 10.5 on a dual 800 Quicksilver G4

Hi All,
I have a Dual 800 Quicksilver G4 that I would like to install 10.5 on. It won't let me get past the initial screen saying to read the documentation.
I got to the "read before you install" and it says the minimum requirements for 10.5 are a PowerPC G4 867 MHZ or faster, 512 ram, etc.
Since I have a dual 800, shouldn't that compensate for not being a single 867 MZH processor?
Is there any work around for this?
Thanks,
Kris

Sorry, but Leopard cannot be installed on your computer. Leopard requires a minimum 867 MHz CPU and yours is 800 MHz. Dual doesn't count double.
You might try a third-party utility called XPostFacto or LeopardAssist - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Dual 800 quicksilver AGP card

    hi all,
Yesterday I picked up an old quicksilver G4 with the dual 800mhz cpus. i tried to install a nvidia geforce 6200 AGP that I have in my PC. it fit, but it was tight. I put the mac together and it would not power on, or even light up. I know the card works because it works great in my pc. I put the origanal card in the mac and it booted up like normal. I noticed that it's cmos battery is dead, could that effect it? I will use this mac more than the PC if i could get that card to work.
    - Thanks in advanced.

I pretty well covered all the "how to" bases in my post above......
Here is a NVFlash how to:
    http://themacelite.wikidot.com/nvflash-basics
The linked description page for the 6200 WANG also has the downloads link to the ROM page.
As for that particular card, well, there is a bit of the unknown, but it appears to be a reference design which simplifies things.
One may need to do some identifier editing in the ROM.
It's a "flash and see" kind of thing.
Might make an account at Strangedogs to access the Pro boards and see what others are doing for 6200's.

  • CPU fan recommendations for dual 800 Quicksilver

It never rains but it pours.
Just a few hours after posting about HD heat issues my CPU fan has gotten really noisy with a slight rattling noise. Yes, it is the CPU fan. Maybe it's the hot weather we are having causing something to expand, or maybe the cleaning I gave it yesterday with compressed air pushed it over the edge. Anyway, I removed the fan, lubricated it with one drop 3M oil under the sticker, replaced it. All dust and dirt is off the blades. I have poked and prodded it to see if there were other items vibrating (e.g., the famous screws touching something), but nothing changes. The sporadic rattling (sometimes disappears for half a minute or so but usually there) really suggests to me that a bearing might be going. At this stage I think it is time to go shopping for a new fan.
This is a dual processor machine of the early QS series so it's like a toaster inside and I'm not sure if any of the standard QS fan recommendations apply to a dual. Of course I want everything - high CFM and silence. I found a lengthy discussion from last December talking about a single processor replacement but I thought I'd solicit current recommendations, especially for dual processor.
    Thanks

The specs aren't too hard to find; I just searched: " Sunon PMD1206PTB1". Google brought me to a Sunon site.
    http://www.tmcscsi.com/Sunon.shtml
the above link doesn't seem to work as a link, but when I type it into my address bar, it works fine. Go figure!
which tells all. The KDE1206PTV1 fan is a different series and rated at 23.5cfm and 33.5 dBA, which I think we knew; it also runs somewhat slower and draws about half the current. More importantly, there are probably half a dozen 60X60X25mm fans of either the PMD or KDE series that would fit, and would push more or less air at more or less noise. What it doesn't tell is what your ear would call an acceptable compromise. In general, of course, more cfm, more dBA. It also doesn't tell how these stats compare to other brands; I ran it all down at one time, and it's a rather laborious process, but it can be done. I didn't have any frame of reference, so it was all just numbers to me; I set the whole matter aside until just now with your inquiry.
I wouldn't worry about the connectors too much; I fit QS fans to the DA model and wind up connecting them with Molex plugs and no problems. The replaced SilenX fan had three wires, of which only two were used, and it worked. Most PCs use a third wire to turn the fan off or on, or up and down, or something - which Apple doesn't. N.B. If you use the Molex connector, you will note that the red (5v) wire plugs into the yellow (12v) socket; not to worry - it spozed to. The PMD fan I got came with two wires, bared at the ends, but no connector(s). I wound up jury-rigging the connexion. PC accessory houses that sell fans also sell wire adapters of dozens of configurations, just search. My two favourite such houses are Xoxide.com and pcToys.com. I think I got the Sunon fan(s) from Allied Electric (alliedelec.com) for about $12 and $12 s&h, which is a minimum figure. You can ship multiple fans for that.
Sunon says its fans work on the Mag-Lev principle, so lubrication wouldn't help much. What would hurt would be an unbalanced fan, so it might help to clean the crud off the blades - evenly, if possible.
I keep wondering what a slot fan would do to cooling and noise, but that may be a thought better postponed. First should be getting the CPU acceptably cool. I also understand it helps cooling if you clip some of the grillwork in front of or behind the fans (power supply fans, especially).
Just a few thoughts ..... Jon

  • PM G4 Quicksilver (dual 800)

    Hi @ all
Is there any way to make a Quicksilver G4 (dual 800) more quiet? Now my Quicksilver is very loud so I can't make my work while the System is on. I thought about changing the PSU-Fan and the Case-Fan.
Is there a possybility to change the Heatsink that is installed now to copper or any other Heatsink?
I even need a airport card for the Quicksilver where can I get this from and what is the price for it?
    Thx for your help

Hi, positioning the computer actually makes more a difference than most folks suspect. Putting it behind the desk, in the corner, and so on allows other things to come between you and the sound. As long as the air flow isn't obstructed, that's a good thing. Have you blown out the ducts/openings lately? Dust buildup causes the fans to work harder. Replacing internal devices with external ones also takes the load off the computer, causing it to run quieter. Here are even more radical ideas if the sound is driving you nuts:
1> Water cooling kits. (Not for the faint of heart!)
2> Sound insulation inside the case -- Dynamat, packing foam, and other material. You can use this on particular devices that are loud (say like older hard drives) or just line the case itself with the material.

  • Adding SCSI drives to my 2001 G4 Quicksilver Dual 800?

I'm thinking about adding additional SCSI drives to my Dual 800. I ordered my G4 Quicksilver with a 10,000rpm Seagate Cheeta and now want to add another Seagate SCSI. I'm choosing Seagate for no other reason than to stay using a product that has been successful for me. My questions are (enter drum roll here)..... how big of SCSI drive can I install??? What should I check out before doing so? What problems may I encounter?
    2001 QuickSilver G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Dual 800/1.5gig memory
    QuickSilver G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I expect it may be an Adaptec or Atto SCSI card. If you open the case and have a look there's probably a make and model stamped on the card itself. You may be able to find the information from the manufacturers web site:
    http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/support/mac/
    http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/support/scsi/

Alternatively I guess you could send them an email and hope you get a useful response.

  • G4 Dual 800 MHz - Upgrade capable from 10.3.9 to 10.5.6 Leopard?

I have seen a few similar questions to this topic but not exactly what I'm after so sorry if I am being redundant. I have a G4 (Quicksilver, I believe) dual 800 Mhz processer with 1GB SDRAM. Will this support an upgrade of the OS from 10.3.9 directly to 10.5.6? I'm mostly worried about speed and performance. My specs appear below. Thanks in advance for your advice!
    *Hardware Overview:*
    Machine Model: Power Mac G4
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 2
    CPU Speed: 800 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 2 MB
    Memory: 1 GB
    Bus Speed: 133 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.2.5f1
    *System Software Overview:*
    System Version: Mac OS X 10.3.9 (7W98)
    Kernel Version: Darwin 7.9.0
    Boot Volume: Computer

Your computer does not meet the system requirements for Leopard. An 867 MHz or faster processor is required (single CPU - dual doesn't count.)

  • HDD anomaly G4 Dual 800

    Just picked up a used G4 Dual 800 G4, with OSX 10.5.8.
The system drive is a Seagate ST33020620A that has a label that states capacity as 320gb.
Yet the disk utility states that the drive has a capacity of 128gb. The info panel says "148GB" with 134+GB available.
Any clues on how to make the full drive available/visible?
Thanks from a person not experienced with Apple innards.

    Hello SBPG,
And Welcome to the Apple Forum!
I think you have found the last G4 that doesn't see the larger hard drives. My solution (starting years ago with the beige G3s and continuing up to the last dual 800MHz 2001 Quicksilver I configured for sale) has been to fit an ATA 100/133 controller card that sees up to four of the larger hard drives. The AEC6280M ACARD is an excellent card, usually available through eBay for around $50. There are variants such as the 6880 and 6885 which permit RAID configurations, but work well as simple controller cards and are occasionally cheaper. There are SIIG rebranded ACARD cards which work equally well, but be sure you get the dark green ACARD ones; SIIG has also supplied an ochre-coloured card (under the same parts number) which eats drive directories and is to be avoided. Also Sonnet supplies an Ultra-Tek card; I have used a couple of them in the past and they work well, even though my Apple Profiler didn't identify one of them.
There is also a software workaround with some limitations with which I am not familiar.
    Regards and good luck!

  • Dual 800 vs Imac. Performance. Upgrade?

I have a Powermac G4 dual 800 loaded with RAM and 3 huge HDs and the WEAK LINK is a 15" monitor. I use the Adobe CS2 suite and Macromedia Studio 8 as well as the ilife stuff and Toast. I am in desperate need of more screen real estate with all the palettes and toolbars I use. I want to buy a 20'' or 23' display but it would also cause me to spend at least 200-250 to upgrade the graphics card. So I'm lookin at 1000-1300 just for a new display. Seems like a lot $ince I can get a 20" imac for nearly the same. Ive had this g4 quicksilver for a while and its still awesome but besides the screen size a "lil" speedboost would be nice. So...
    1. If I buy a G5 Imac am I kind of throwing money away when I can "buy for the future" with a core duo?
    2. If I buy the Intel Imac 20" will my adobe and macromedia apps run better under Rosetta than a G4 Dual 800. Or Will I be stuck with practically unusable(like virtual PC slow) software. Any experiences?
    3. Should I buy the G5 Imac 20" and let the Intel Core Duo work out the kinks for another year and enjoy better adobe/macromedia performance.
I know these are common questions right now but I was curious about real world performance compared to a G4 dual 800.

John, welcome, this personal, but I like your original idea. I plan to get the display sooner and the new computer later, depending on what happens. As of now, that's my plan.

  • Correct SDRAM, and what is the ram ceiling in a Dual 1Ghz Quicksilver?

    Hello all,
Thanks for helping me with my optical drive question earlier. I now would like to ask about ram. At present my G4 1GHz is running OSX Tiger on 256Mb ram. Things run ok, but they could definitely be better.
My G4 is one of the older Quicksilver models and uses SDRAM as opposed to DDR. Specifically it requires:
    SDRAM, PC133 • CL=3 • Unbuffered • Non-parity • 133MHz
At first I thought I could simply transfer the larger ram sticks from my old G4 400MHz sawtooth, but the Quicksilver is very picky and doesn’t like any of them. I thought it would be backwards compatible and just slow everything down to the slowest speed memory stick (PC100 in this case), but no... it just didn’t like them full stop! (on a side note, I’ve checked and all 3 memory slots on the Quicksilver work fine, nothing defective there).
Once again working on a shoestring I would like to ram up that memory to 1Gb or 1.5Gb as I have a disc for Leopard and I would like to upgrade to that sometime soon.
So, looking on eBuyer I can see what’s described as ‘Generic’ 512MB PC133 168pin Extra Value SDRAM for £11.99 which I see as great value (here's the link). The only thing I cannot tell is if its the CL=3 variety. This means two questions:
    1) Is 1.5Gb the max ram limit for a January 2002 G4 Dual 1Ghz Quicksilver, or is that simply Apple’s ram ceiling at the time? Have people put in say, 2.5Gb on these machines?
    2) Is ‘generic’ ram a complete no-no for these machines? I really can’t see why not, but I’m not that knowledgeable either.
    Many thanks for your help.
Message was edited by: One Brain Cell

The QS didn't like PC100 because it has a 133mhz system bus. You can use PC133 in a machine with a 100mhz bus, but not conversely.
The max RAM is still three 512MB modules for a total of 1.5GB. That model isn;t one that can exceed the original specs.
    2) Is ‘generic’ ram a complete no-no for these machines?
Unless identified as suitable for Mac, most of the generic stuff turns out to be for PC. The site you linked does not provide enough support info, and Googling the "manufacturer's part number" doesn't lead to a manufacturer site, just a bunch of circular references back to the seller's site. Suspicious
You should probably call the seller and ask for someone who knows Mac RAM. In addition to being unbuffered and non-parity, it needs to be low-density.
With such a paucity of key Mac metrics, that listing makes be very nervous. I know RAm is expensive in teh UK based on a lot of psots all over Apple Discussions, but you have to find someone who knows Mac RAM.
There is a great free tool for checking whether any Mac can handle more RAM than the original specs showed. It's the MacTracker database and is here:
    http://www.mactracker.ca
I couldn't work these forums without it. It shows all the facts and specs of the machine, and always indicates if the original RAM specs can be exceed. For example, for the USB 2.0 eMacs, its Memory entry is:
2.0 GB (Actual) 1.0 GB (Apple)
    Very handy.

  • IDVD for a Dual 800 G4.

I have iDVD6 but can't get it to operate fully in my Dual 800 G4 which has plenty of RAM and should be fast enough. It has both OS9.2.2 and OSX.3.9 (as well as Classic which I don't bother with.) I've been trying to get iDVD5 from anywhere without luck - I used to be able to operate with that OK althoug it doesn't deal with Markers from an FCP edited movie, but than neitehr does iDVD6..... ! Shame on you Apple!
Can anyone advise me on whatever possibillity there is of operating iDVD6 with the G4 or alternatively obtaining an edition of iDVD5 from somewhere? (Shame on Apple again which doesn't provide!)
Now - I'd love tobe shot down on any of the points I've made and moreso would be deeply grateful for an snswer to my seeking.

    Ron

Thanks for replying. I have two 80gb HDs. No problem there at all. I consistently use them for editing in FCP3 with, when it's required, a shift of content to the other disk - that's if insufficient CLEAR space would possibly be indicated from my intended next input. My 'secondary' disk is used only as my Scratch Disk. Nothing other than editing storage. If I had iDVD5, I feel sure I 'd manage to again do disk productions albeit, without being able to produce Markers. (Neither iDVD5 or 6 using FCP3 allow disk productions with Markers.)
X.3.9 on a Dual 800 G4 seems to me to be just insufficient for iDVD6 to be used. The Apple spec for iDVD6 appears to not cover X.3.9 on a Dual 800. It mentions a higher spec just above the 800 Dual. Having in some way lost my iDVD5 and Apple not now selling it, I'm forced to appear here for assisstance..... !
    Thanks again for the reply.

  • Correction : How does Macbook (not PRO) compare to G4/800 Quicksilver

I currently have a G4/800 Quicksilver Powermac with 1Gb of memory, two 7200rpm hard drives, and a ATI RAdeon 7500 GPU with 32Mb of RAM.
I mainly use my computer for amateur photograph editing (Photoshop elements) and video-editing (imovie and Final cut express), and I play the occasional game (older games like wolfenstein, medal of honor, warcraft 3). I've read a lot on this forum about how crappy the GMA in the macbook is, but to give me an idea, how does it compare to my equally crappy ATI radeon 7500 ? Would the macbook be ok to play games like C&C generals, Homeworld 2 and other 3D strategy games ? I like the occasional 3D shooter but I don't need the graphical splendour of Quake 4. And I've read that Final Cut pro has some issues with the macbook but I suppose Final cut express would be ok ?
How would the 2Gh Macbook compare to my G4 Quicksilver speedwise overall (I would max out the ram in the macbook) ?

    Well lets compare the two.
    Old mac New mac
g4/800 mhz 2ghz intel core duo
    1gb ram 1gb (minimum)
    7500 gpu 32mb Intel GMA 950 64MB
Not only does the processor in the macbook easily outperform the g4/800, but the new gpu offers double the mb and I belive the processor within it is better aswell.
If you was to max out the ram, to say 2gb this will improve gameplay/editing extremely. The limiting factor here will be the graphics, but Im sure it will do the job.

  • G4 Dual 800 Suitability For iDVD6.....

I'm aware that a single processor G4 of greater spec than a single 800 G4 is the lowest acceptable size for operating with iDVD6 but what about the DUAL 800....? Does a Dual 800 processor system equate to or exceed the capacity of that larger single processor one advised by Apple? (I think it's about 1700 single.)
I've had the advice in the past that "it should be so" but in view of my recent failures with iDVD6 in burning disks, a more positive answer now seems to be required. I'm also operating with OSX.3.9 which is the lowest spec advised for using iLife so it's now important to me to get answers which are total in quality.
Will someone oblige with the knowledge needed.
    T.I.A.
    Ron.

Okay Len. Accepting your facts, I can't understand why the prog doesn't indicate more specifically instead of "Errors in project - There are errors during the project validation. These errors have to be fixed before burning the project." I note I'm not alone in querying where to look for "validation errors" and exactly what that means. Also, the fact that a burn can still take place within Toast6 further adds to the suspicion that iDVD needs bettering or that the computer concerned is lacking in some way as you point out.
However, I'm able to edit in FCP3 comfortably and hitherto been able to burn from iDVD2 in OS9.2.2 but unfortunately trashed iDVD2 with my efforts in trying to rectify problems in iDVD6 without realising I wouldn't be able to get it back..... Apple no longer offer an upgrade to iDVD2 from iDVD1 so if I did manage to get my original back I'm still scuppered that way. That's been my first reason for entering into iDVD6 and naturally now wish to have it properly up and running without the hassle seen from quite a few others as well as myself.
That 'said' I'm grateful for the help received through these columns.

I trying to boot from the recovery disc that came with my Mac, However when I hold down the C key to boot the drive will spin up then stops. never getting to the disc so I can reinstall. Next I removed the HD from the computer and connected the DVD drive to the HD bus thinking the bus for thr DVD drive might be bad or the cable is bad. Agin the same thing.
    Any ideas?
