Install 2008 R2 on Windows Server 2012

Hi,
I am trying to install SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 on Windows Server 2012 Datacenter.
However, I get below warning when running setup.exe:
"your version of microsoft sql server (2008 and 2008 r2) isn't compatible with this version of windows"
How do I find what prerequisite I need?

Apologies for very late response. SQL Server 2008 R2 is x64 and Windows Server 2012 Datacenter is x64.
When I try to install SQL Server I get this...
I click 'Run the program without getting help' and all looks ok...
Any ideas?

As you can see all rule check is fine you can move ahead.I usually get this message during installation but installation never fails

To work around the issue, use one of the following methods:
Assign the Log on as a service user right to NT SERVICE\ALL SERVICES in the GPO that defines the user right.
Exclude the computer from the GPO that defines the user right.
We moved the SCCM server to OU where no policies were getting applied and then applied the new GPO to that OU. Restarted the server and we were able to install WSUS role.

SharePoint 2013 OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 vs Windows Server 2012 Standard

Hi Team,
We are thinking on upgrading from SharePoint 2010 to SP 2013 soon. I have been researching about the server OS I should install as host, and it seems that SharePoint 2013 is fully compatible by now with both Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard + SP1 and
Windows Server 2012 Standard. In my opinion we should go with server 2012, but Windows server 2008 is the norm here at our organization and our Infrastructure team seems reluctant to upgrade servers to 2012 yet.
My question is, what SharePoint or Windows 2012 features will we miss if we decide to stay on Windows 2008? What are the perks (selling points) of going with 2012 over 2008? (besides the obvious Microsoft support range extension).

If you stay on Windows Server 2008 R2 you will enter the extended/out of support phase sooner, of course. You will miss out on IIS improvements, although in practical terms it may not mean much.
There are extra patches required for a 2008 R2 deployment that are not needed on 2012 for SharePoint 2013. But other than that, I think the other big issue is that mostly in the community, you'll find people running Server 2012 which means issues are better
'known' by the community, versus 2008 R2 in combination with SharePoint 2013.

Is it ok to install Exchange 2013 on Windows Server 2012 Standard?

Hello everyone,
I'd like to know if it is ok/safe to install Exchange Server 2013 on Windows Server 2012 Standard?
As I started doing some research and noticed a page where Microsoft states they don't recommend running Exchange on Server 2012 Standard, and recommend making 2 different servers one for Active Directory and another for Exchange.
On that page they also listed some features that wouldn't work in case of Exchange is running on Server 2012. And that it may put a larger data load if setup this way.
I am hoping someone knowledgeable can explain and tell me if it is safe to use such setup or if it is better to use something like SBS 2011 Standard instead, which has Exchange included?
Has anyone installed Exchange 2013 on Server 2012 Standard successfully and used it for more then several months without problems?
Also just to give an idea on my background, I've been in IT field fairly long but haven't really updated to newer versions much and mainly used SBS 2003 and 2008 only with a few clients so haven't used 2008 too much.

Few things to note.
There is
NO SBS in 2012
All you need is a Std edition of Windows for Exchange 2013, as there is no difference in features between Std and Datacenter as far as Exchange is concerned.
For 10 users, you can have one box with both AD and Exchange. It is not MS recommeded, but it IS supported.

Upgrade for Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2012 R2

Hi Guys,
I am having an issue with upgrading one of our Servers. When I try to upgrade the Server it starts the process perfectly fine without any issues, it reboots and displays the Windows Server 2012 R2 Logo and then I get a black screen and it hangs. I waited
around 5 hours today before rebooting the Server and letting it rollback the changes that setup had made.
Original Server Setup
OS: Windows Server 2008 R2
Other Applications: MS SQL Server 2012 with SP2
Removed Applications: Symantec Backup Agen
Hardware: Virtual Server ESXi 5.0
I have upgraded other servers without any issues but they haven't had SQL Server installed on them, so I am guessing that this is the issue but SQL Server 2012 sp2 is Supported by Windows Server 2012 R2. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi All,
Yes we are running ESXi 5 U 2 I am looking at how much of a pain this will be to build a new VM for this database server, as it contains our Citrix database which we have had issues with in the past. I might end up just leaving this server for the moment
and move onto another server and hopefully not have any more issues.

I want to install windows server 2012 R2 and make it additional Domain Controller and transfer the roles to make it primary Domain Controller.

After successful installation of the Windows 2012R2 OS, go to the server manager and Install the Active Directory Server Role: In server manager go to manage-> add roles and features wizard -> skip welcome -> Select Role-based or Feature based installation
-> Select your local server -> Select Active Directory Domain Services (including management tools) -> go throughout the wizard and press finish. Note, that schema upgrade would take care by itself.
After the Role installation you have to promote the server as an additional DC to an existing domain: On the flag on top of the server manager's console, there should be 1 notification. Press the flag and select the "Promote this server to a domain controller"
link. Choose the option to add a domain controller to an existing domain and go through the wizard.
After successful completion (including restart) open command prompt as admin and type ntdsutil.exe -> ntdsutil prompt opens -> type Roles -> type connections -> type connect to server <your new Win12 server name> -> type quit to go to
FMSO maintenance prompt -> type transfer infrastructure master (confirm transfer) -> type transfer naming master (confirm transfer) -> type transfer PDC (confirm transfer) -> type transfer RID master (confirm transfer) -> type
transfer schema master (confirm transfer).
To verify transfer: type select operation target -> type list roles for connected server
Exit ntdsutil.exe (ctrl+C) and confirm configuration status by checking the event viewer and by running dcdiag.exe in command prompt.

If it is not a DC, upgrade should be easy. And there shouldn’t be any problems.
The question was about upgrading a WSUS server, and regardless of whether it's a DC or not, it most emphatically will not be problem free. In fact, it's flat out not possible! On WS2012 the upgrade will be blocked if WSUS v3 is present,
and on WS2012R2 it will corrupt the WSUS installation beyond repair requiring a reinstallation of the operating system.
Please review the
WSUS v6 documentation regarding upgrade requirements.

Upgrade from any version of Windows Server that supports WSUS 3.2 to Windows Server® 2012 R2 requires that you first uninstall WSUS 3.2.
In Windows Server 2012, upgrading from any version of Windows Server with WSUS 3.2 installed is blocked during the installation process if WSUS 3.2 is detected, and you are prompted to first uninstall Windows Server Update Services prior to upgrading Windows
Server 2012.
However, because of changes in Windows Server 2012 R2, when upgrading from any version of Windows Server and WSUS 3.2 to Windows Server 2012 R2, the installation is not blocked. Failure to uninstall WSUS 3.2 prior to performing a Windows Server 2012 R2 upgrade
will cause the post installation tasks for WSUS in Windows Server 2012 R2 to fail. In this case, the only known corrective measure is to format the hard drive and reinstall Windows Server 2012 R2.

Install sharepoint 2013 on Windows server 2012, Microsoft Identity Extensions issue !!!!!!!!!

Sharepoint 2013 comes with prerequisitesinstaller.exe to install the software required for the actual Sharepoint installation.
I 've installed Windows server 2012 in the R2 edition as well as Standard edition, but installing the prerequisites ends with an issue for the Microsoft Identity Extensions (MIE) on both versions (screenshot).
The 2012 R2 server has been updated with all latest files by executing Windows update.
In case of the Server 2012 R2, MIE is already installed , but somehow the Sharepoint installation is missing something.
I al;so tried removing default install to let prerequisiteinstaller.exe to install it's own version, but that did not help.
When I skip the prerequisites remaining items, the Sharepoint installation stops directly , requesting the missing items.
I've tried several Sharepoint server installation files, including the 180 days free version.

Installing SharePoint Server 2013 on a computer that is running Windows Server 2012 R2 could lead to unexpected behavior, therefore, Microsoft does not support SharePoint Server 2013 in Windows Server 2012 R2.
SharePoint Server 2013 with Service Pack 1 and SharePoint Foundation 2013 with Service Pack 1 will offer support for Windows Server 2012 R2.

Installing Exchange 2013 on Windows Server 2012 R2

Now that SP1 has been released, it is supported to run Exchange 2013 on Windows Server 2012 R2
But since it is not yet possible to download Exchange 2013 with integrated SP1 (slipstreamed), is the following installation procedure supported:
- Install Exchange 2013 (without SP1) on Windows Server 2012 R2
- Install SP1 on top of Exchange 2013
If this is not supported, can someone tell me when the Exchange 2013 with integrated SP1 (slipstreamed) download will be released?

Sharepoint 2013 - Error installing pre-requisite on Windows Server 2012 R2

I have been trying to get my Sharepoint 2013 installed on windows server 2012 R2. I was never able to get past the pre-requisite installer. It keeps failing at "Configuring Application Server Role, Web Server (IIS) Role" and was never able to get
past that.
In the last 3 days i tried almost all of the suggestions posted in various forums but was never able to get it work. Any insight in to this error and resolution is greatly appreciated.

I voted for the SharePoint 2013 isn't supported yet link. I spent 4 hours resolving the issue. In my installation, there were many claims by the installer that the application server role is corrupt or unavailable. I dove deep into the installer files and
found 1 file that was not in the correct place. I am not going to mention it, because it is the reason the installer should fail.
Downloading and installing sharepoint 2013 sp1 was the answer. Why? Because Windows Server 2012 R2 was my operating system. Windows Server 2012 R2 was not a supported type of installation for SharePoint 2013 until SharePoint 2013 SP1 was released.
I hope this helps those whom have ben in dire need. Even though Paul was initially correct in his statement, the release of SharePoint 2013 sp1 opens doors.

Unable to install Device CALs on Windows Server 2012 after OS Reinstall

Due to a hardware fault we had to reinstall Windows Server 2012. I have activated the Terminal Services licensing Server but I am unable to install Device CALs that we have purchased.
The error is as follows:
"Remote Desktop Services Licensing is unable to process your request. Make sure you provided correct information. If the problem persists, try other methods of activation. Error code is 800"
I tried contacting technical support over phone - they are also unable to resolve the issue.

I contacted Clearing House over phone and provided them with all the details regarding authorization
number(s), license number(s) et al. However they also mentioned that there is some technical error from their "tool" and directed me to Technet Forum.
