Install a temporary Exchange 2010 in an existing environment

I have an existing production environment with 3 Exchange 2010 servers in a DAG configuration working well.I would now like to verify the backups by restoring databases to a new Exchange 2010 server which I will only keep for a limited time. When installing Exchange 2010 I get "You must be member of the 'Organization Management' role group or 'Enterprise Admin' to continue"I assume this is because I need some specific permissions in Active Directory I don't normally have. I could very well use a different account which I'm fairly sure has these permissions, but I want to make sure I'm not introducing instability in our production environment by adding a fourth Exchange 2010 server which will then be deleted again.I have no intention of configuring the fourth server as a DAG member, but I'm not really an Exchange person and I'm looking...

Hi FriendzKnight
II,
Try to perform exchange 2010 recovery using the recovery switch. Build new exchange 2010 server and restore the exchange 2010 from the backup using recovery switch.
This will work to get back exchange 2010 in your existing exchange 2013 enivornment

  • Installing SP3 on Exchange 2010 - Error

    Hi,
I'm getting an error message when trying to install SP3 on Exchange 2010.
I am currently running: Exchange 2010 SP1 - Windows Server 2008 Ent.  2 nodes, DAG
"The server side error is: 0x21a2 The FSMO role ownership could not be verified because its directory partition has not replicated successfully with at least one replication partner."
So I ran dcdiag, and sure enough I get a replication error, several of them actually:
"The failure occurred at 2014-02-11 13:54:23.
The last success occurred at 2013-05-30 00:51:00.
32 failures have occurred since the last success.
[Replications Check,EXCHANGE2010] A recent replication attempt failed:
                From EXCHANGE2010-2 to EXCHANGE2010
                Naming Context: CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,DC=mydomainname,DC=lcl
The replication generated an error (8614):
The directory service cannot replicate with this server because the time since the last replication with thi
s server has exceeded the tombstone lifetime."
The thing I'm not understanding is this: When I check the EMC looking at the DAG tab, it looks as though everything with the DAG is fine. Also, when I check the Organization Config->Mailbox, both copies of the Database seem to be Healthy.
So, I guess what I'm asking is what can be causing this error message and what steps can I take to try to fix it? I'm not an expert at this, which I guess is clear since I'm posting here!
    Thanks,
    mike

    Thanks DarDevil,
Before you replied I came across an article that suggested I could force a replication.
So I ran the command they listed:  ‘repadmin /syncall /AeD
It seemed to have worked, as I am now able to install SP3, which was the thing I was trying to do all along. I'm testing SP3 on this test system before I install on production.
Any particular reason not to run the force replication command above?  Before running the command, I put in a registry key that would allow it according to another article I read. I have since removed the key.
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTDS\Parameters\Allow Replication With Divergent and Corrupt Partner
    Thanks!

    Hi John,
Exchange 2010 Service Pack 3 is the latest service pack. It is recommended to install it. Service Packs are cumulative, Exchange 2010 SP3 includes all fixes included in previous RUs and service packs. Here is a blog for your reference:

  • Failure installing SP3 on Exchange 2010

    Good evening,
Following TechNet closely I'm currently in the process of moving my exchange 2010 environment to 2013.  I have single exchange server on a SBS 2011 box.  Sadly I've failed at the first hurdle installing SP3, the result is that my Exchange 2010
    is refusing all client connections.
During the SP3 install I passed all prerequisites but during the actual upgrade it failed at the Hub Transport Role with the following error:

From the event log files, I recommend you do as follows to check the result.
    1.disabling all the exchange services
2.clearing both the apps and system logs
    3.restarting the server
    4.reinstall the Exchange 2010 SP3

  • What is the best way to get activesync to work on Exchange 2010 with co-existing Exchange 2003?

I currently have all my mailboxes on my Exchange 2003 server and I introduced my first Exchange 2010 server into the same environment so they are running co-existent.  The mailflow is functioning properly so now I need to test out the activesync.  From
what I've read, you have to create a SSL certificate with SAN on the Exchange 2010 server and create a legacy.domain.com name to point to the Exchange 2003 server.  Then replace out the existing SSL certificate on the Exchange 2003 server with the
new one that was created for the Exchange 2010 server.  However, my question is that if this does not work could I easily revert back to the original settings where Exchange 2003 server is doing the activesync instead of Exchange 2010?  That way
I would not disrupt activesync from working.

The legacy url is not important for activesync, but:
Enable Integrated Windows authentication on the Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync virtual directory on the
    Exchange 2003 back-end server
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee332348(EXCHG.140).aspx
once you point your external url for active sync at your 2010 it should proxy the 2003 active sync

  • Unable to install rollup4 for Exchange 2010 SP3

    Hi,
I'm unable to install KB2905616 on my multi-role Exchange 2010 SP3 server. The setup wizard gets stuck at "the setup wizard is generating native images for .NET assemblies........"
I know that this process will take some time to complete but I have waited 10 hours.

    Exchange is functioning perfectly otherwise.
Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

    Hi,
I recommend you check if the anti-virus has been disabled before you start the upgrade process.
If you didn't ,the update could fail or take an extended amount of time.
Also, disable all other third-party apps/plugins that might be installed (like backup agents).
In addition, the following articles for your reference:
Install the Latest Update Rollup for Exchange 2010
When you install an update rollup package, Exchange tries to connect to the certificate revocation list (CRL) Web site. Exchange examines the CRL list to verify the code signing certificate. (To download and view the CRL list, see

The installation takes a long time to complete.
You receive the following message during the installation: Creating native images for .Net assemblies
When Exchange isn't connected to the Internet, each CRL request must complete before the installation can continue.
To work around this issue and to reduce installation times, turn off the
Check for publisher’s certificate revocation option on the server that is being upgraded. Use the following steps:
    Start Internet Explorer.
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
Click the Advanced tab, and then locate the Security section.
Clear the Check for publisher’s certificate revocation check box, and then click

  • Some help with migrating exchange 2010 to exchange 2013 + installing another exchange 2010 to be edge-forefront-proxy server

    Hi guys (and girls)!
Hear me up. The idea is like this:
A friend of mine has currently Exchange 2010 SP3 in his environment with Forefront Protection installed on it. As we all know Forefront Protection is discontinued in Exchange 2013 environment because Exchange 2013 on-premisses is using integrated tool for
doing that, but a friend of mine would really like to stick with Forefront Protection because it is "much better tool" then integrated stuff in 2013.
Ok, so here's the idea. Exchange 2010 SP3 with Forefront is installed on Phisical machine (so, not virtualized) on 2008 r2 std OS. We decided to move to Exchange 2013 because we wanted to achieve DAG on Exchange 2010 but we realized that is not possible
because 2008 R2 STD OS does not support failover-clustering functionality, but you are able to achieve that on newer OS for example 2012? Ok, so we bought another server, where we are planing to install Vmware Esxi and put two virtual machines on it.
One Will be 2012 r2 STD OS with Exchange 2013 on it, the other Will be 2008 r2 STD with Exchange 2010 Edge role + Forefront on it. We are planing to move Exchange 2010 production server to virtual machine Exchange 2013, and newly virtual machine
with Exchange 2010 edge server will only be "a kind of Proxy server with Forefront functionality". What concers me?
Should we install Exchange 2010 edge transport 1st, or Exchange 2013? I think I have read somewhere after you put Exchange 2013 in production you are "unable" to install any previous Exchange versions is that true?
One more question about what happens after you install another Exchange 2010 with Edge role in production enviroment? Does installation effects a production enviroment, let's say we do just a clean installation of Exchange + ran updates?
Which roles do you need to install on Exchange 2010 to achive Edge role? Do you need to have all the roles install for having Edge server (mailbox, hub, cas?).

No it does not as long you don't make any changes on send/receive connector and do the EdgeSubscription. As soon as you do the Edge subscription there will be send/receive connector created, so pay attention how to setup the Edge Server.
Which roles do you need to install on Exchange 2010 to achive Edge role? Do you need to have all the roles install for having Edge server (mailbox, hub, cas?).
Just install the Edge Transport Server and make sure you install ADLDS services.
as you have mentioned you are doing to install both Mailbox and Edge server on the same VMware - it is a single point of failure.

    Hello
Just recent tried to install sp1 for Exchange 2010, this failed, and ended up in installing SP3, and this went ok.
Ok, by meaning, the installation itself went OK, but the former SP1 isntallation broke a couple of things, and some was adopted to the SP3 isntalaltion.
The main issue now, is that OOF does not work.

Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on the local server machine, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current
web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "RemoteOnly". To enable the details to be viewable on remote machines, please set "mode" to "Off".

  • OOF not working after Exchange 2010 install

I have a Exchange 2007 server environment where I recently installed a new Exchange 2010 server.  After installing the 2010 server, my clients are receiving the following error when trying to configure OOF.  "Your automatic reply settings
cannot be displayed because the server is currently unavailable.  Try again later."  I've not moved any mailboxes to the new server, just installed it.
I've done all the tests I can find online and all pass without issue.  I'ma able to get to the OOF URL without issue as well.
The 2007 server is on SP 3 rollup 12.

    Hi,
The above problem generally occurs because the CAS server uses the credentials that you used to log on to Windows instead of the credentials that you used to log on to the mailbox in Outlook. I recommend you install the hotfix in the following KB to solve
    this issue.
"Your Out of Office settings cannot be displayed, because the server is currently unavailable. Try again later" error when you try to open the Out of Office Assistant in Outlook 2010
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2596516
    Hope it helps.

Not sure that would be the issue with every machine on the network, plus the user I'm logging in with is the mailbox I need to access so the credentials should be the same.

  • Cannot create to distribution group for a tenant on hosted exchange 2010

    hi everyone,
I have installed a hosting exchange 2010 than created a tenant1 and users in this tenant1.
I would like to create a distribution group named "dist group1" for tenant1 for exp: [email protected]
    but while I was trying, I got following the errors;
[PS] C:\Windows\system32>New-DistributionGroup -name "dist group1" -Alias distgroup1 -PrimarySmtpAddress "[email protected]" -DisplayName "distgroup1" -Organization tenant1 -ManagedBy "onder.cloud/Microsoft Exchange

dist group1                distgroup1                Universal                     [email protected]
    [PS] C:\Windows\system32>Get-DistributionGroup
    [PS] C:\Windows\system32>Enable-DistributionGroup "distgroup1"
The operation couldn't be performed because object 'distgroup1' couldn't be found on 'clouddc01.onder.cloud'.
        + CategoryInfo          : NotSpecified: (0:Int32) [Enable-DistributionGroup], ManagementObjectNotFoundException
        + FullyQualifiedErrorId : 11C76BCC,Microsoft.Exchange.Management.RecipientTasks.EnableDistributionGroup
    please help me,

    Hi,
In order to narrow down the cause, I’d like to recommend you can try the following troubledhooting:
    1.  Check if the distribution group exists in ADUC on your DC server. And you can refer to the following path:
    DC>ADUC>Domain.com>users
    2. Create another distribution group to have a test.
I refer to the following article to create a new distribution group, and it works well:

  • Exchange 2003 Exchange 2010 migration confusing?

    Hi,
I have searched several articles for this migration in this forum and other forums (ie
    petenetlive,
    simple-talk,
    Exchange Server Deployment Assistant,
Technet) but when you start reading the guides there are discrepancies between one and the others and vice versa.
    I have this scenario:
    1) Old server windows 2003 R2 std + exchange 2003
    2) New server windows 2012 R2 + exchange 2010
I have not installed exchange 2010 yet because I had to first update Active Directory schema to W2012 (adprep /forestprep, adprep /domainprep) R2 and also update exchange schema using  setup /PrepareSchema from the exchange 2010 media.
Then I read that I have to install Exchange 2010 in stages ie Client Access Role first, then Transport Hub and then Mailbox role.
Also a digital certificate i required and was wondering if I could still use a self signed certificate.
Does anyone know of a very good article or video that explains this process consistently STEP by STEP?
    Thanks
    Regards

  • Connector help ( Coexistence Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2010)

    Dear all,
we are in a Coexistence state where all the mailboxes are not yet migrated to Exchange Sever 2010.
On Exchange server 2003 we have two connectors 1) Internal 3) External
    1) Internal connector is used to have mail flow between postfix mail and Exchange server.
    2) External Connector is used for sending/receiving emails from External domains (like gmail, yahoo etc...)
    3) when we added first Exchange 2010 that time it created one RGC used for sending/receving emails between Legacy and new server.
What I want to achieve is created new two more connectors on Exchange server which will act as Internal & External connector.
if these works then delete connectors on legacy server and go ahead with for rest migration
is it possible if not then how do it ?
    TheAtulA

    Hi AtulA,
    Thank you for your question.
    Internal:
To support coexistence between these two routing topologies, all Exchange 2010 servers are automatically added to a single routing group when Exchange 2010 is installed. The Exchange 2010 routing group is recognized in Exchange System Manager in Exchange
2003 as Exchange Routing Group within Exchange Administrative Group.
During the installation of the first Exchange 2010 Hub Transport server in an existing Exchange organization, we must specify an Exchange 2003 bridgehead server to which to establish the first routing group connector. We recommend that you select a bridgehead
server located in a hub routing group or in a routing group that has many mailboxes. The routing group connector links the routing group where the Exchange 2003 server resides and the Exchange 2010 routing group. The Exchange 2010 routing group includes all
Exchange 2010 servers, regardless of the Active Directory site in which they reside.
Notice: Don't move Exchange 2010 servers out of Exchange Routing Group (DWBGZMFD01QNBJR), and don't rename Exchange Routing Group (DWBGZMFD01QNBJR) by using a low-level directory editor. Neither action is supported. Exchange 2010 must use
this routing group for communication with Exchange 2003.
    External:
We could create send connector and receive connector to send/receive email from Internet, we should modify the firewall setting to point to Exchange 2010.
If there are any questions regarding this issue, please be free to let me know.
    Best Regard,
    Jim
