Install and Archive

I've read posts on this but I seem to have such a basic question that I think it wasn't asked before. So, here it goes:
- I had to perform an install and archive because my MBP would not start - I'd get that message in I-don't-know-how-many languages. I now have a folder on my HD that reads Previous Systems. My question is: the library folder I find in there is the old username/library or the HD/library?
Thanks

This should help you alot: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120.
If you would like a run down of every last file and folder it preseves including and not including preserving network and user settings, please check this article.
Hope this helps.

  • After a install and archive...

    I recently did a clean install and archive. Can I trash the previous system folder?

    Yes, you can. Only reason to keep it around is if you later want to copy over some preference files, but as you clearly had a reason to A&I, it's most likely best to just trash the old system folder.

  • Install and archive in Snow Leopard

    I understood from another post that the "install and archive" feature no longer exists in Snow Leopard. What should I do to re-install the OSX without losing old documents, settings, licence numbers etc?

    Just reinstall. The only option that will obliterate your data is if you erase the OS volume.

  • Clean Install and Archive has made no difference.

    I've posted recently about this but am still having big problems. My admin user account is very slow and keep getting the spinning beachball everytime I click on an application. When I login Safari opens automatically but to open anything else is painfully slow like there is a delay somewhere. My other user account works fine with no problems. I ran the Disk Utility from the CD and it stated the "HD appears to be ok" which is a good sign I believe. I then tried to reinstall the OS from the disk, it ran fine and I did an archive and install setting but when I restarted the computer I came to the normal login page again with the two users. I clicked the admin user and nothing has changed or improved. getting really t'd off with this now. Shouldn't I be geting a whole welcome and start up page if I have reinstalled the OS.Any suggestions?

    If the computer's internal hard disk drive is or was overly full, the
    system before and after the Archive & Install would be struggling.
    If you did an 'archive and install' there would be no Startup Page
    where your computer acts as if no previous owner personalized it;
    an archive/install and update can give you a new system folder
    and you can have that new system (during install, via option) put
    your old user Admin and other account settings in it.
    An actual archive of surplus files and seldom used images, songs
    or other projects seldom visited, could be created off the computer
    or a whole computer drive clone of all that could be made outside
    the Mac, where it could be revisited via a bootup from that drive;
    and keep the computer's drive more lean. Or, if replacement of an
    original drive comes up, be sure to get a much larger capacity one.
    And an older machine with some time on it, may be in need of a
    new hard disk drive to be installed to replace a failing or weak one.
    {Ideally, prior to the 'archive and install' procedure, if a machine is
    still running OK and you have the means at hand and know-how,
    to make a full drive content clone to a bootable external HDD.}
    Having a backup, even on a good day, is one of the forms
    of recommended preventative action akin to maintenance
    and recovery procedures one can do at home. An invest-
    ment in a suitable externally enclosed bootable hard disk
    drive unit and experimentation with a clone utility such as
    free-running Carbon Copy Cloner, or SuperDuper, is wise.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Problems After Re-Installing And Archive

    After having a problem with a couple of applications in Final Cut Studio(Primarily Compressor), it was suggested to re-install Tiger and and archive, as that worked for others. Now, every other start up, the screen shows the multi-language "Welcome" at the beginning of configuring a new installation. When I get the reular start up, it says "Transport Monitor Application Did Not Launch Because Of Shared Library Error." Do I need to find the old system and toss it? It would be nice to find out what's going on before trying another installation. Any help is appreciated.

    Transport Monitor is a login item that is normally found in the /Library/Palm/ folder. The contents of the /Library/ folder are not transferred during an Archive and Install. They must be moved manually from the Previous System Folder. If you are no longer using Palm software then open the Accounts preferences, click on Login Items tab, and delete the Transport Monitor item from the list.

  • Install and archive q

    My Macbook started freezing up this morning after restarting. I've tried restarting it, even using the install disk to run the disk utility. I think the next step is reinstalling the OS, but I'm afraid of losing my files. I have some very, very, very important stuff on here that I haven't backed up yet. Will archive and install save them? Should I take it to Apple before trying this?

    yes if you choose the option to preserve user data. However, before you do ANYTHING, make a full backup of your system. any kind of install including an archive and install is subject to failure. so if you value your "very very very important" data at all, make a backup. you should keep one at all times anyway. Every single hard drive eventually fails and when it does all the data is gone.
    Should I take it to Apple before trying this?
    no.

  • Signed jar installed and Archive, but class not found

    I have created an applet with needs access to system resources, therefor I had to create and sign a jar file. The jar must installed on the client for performance reasons. Another part of the applet must still loaded from the server, so I used the archive tag. But in spite of the fact that the class files are in the installed jar, is isn't found.
    The HTML code I use for calling the applet is :
    <applet codebase="/eCommunity/"
         code=EcmRoom.STMeetingApplet
         name=eCommunity
         width=600 height=400
         archive="STMRCPACSupport.jar"
         VIEWASTEXT
         MAYSCRIPT>
    </applet>
    The code class resides in the installed JAR, but can't be found.
    If anyone can tell what I am missing in the code, please tell me. My gratitude will be great!

    Good god, how did you dig this up? Call it a hunch, but I doubt he'll respond. ;)

    Hey Guys. I have a 1st gen dual 2.3 powerPC G5. I just recently upgraded my OS to Leopard 10.5. I cannot for the life of me, get FlashPlayer to work. I Downloaded and installed the archived 10_1r102_64 version, but it still doesn't work.
    Everytime I click on a video it says I need to update to the newest version of flash, but my computer doesn't support the updated version. So I feel like I'm in a Catch-22.
    Any suggestions?

    Jay, you may very well be up a creek without a paddle.
    See in each Browser which version of Flash it thinks it has...

    Then Test Adobe Shockwave & Flash Players...

    If it in fact says you do have 10.1.102.64, & some sites say you need higher, it is a catch 22.

  • Update turbotax 2013 error can't extract from archive  on install and launch

    I installed my turbotax 2013. Then it said to update. I downloaded the update. Then it said install and relaunch. Up comes this message, "An error occurred while extracting the archive. Please try again later. No matter what I try. It comes up with same error message. I was online with intuit techs and they haven't solved it yet. Any ideas?

    First off, you are not seeing a kernel panic but an inability to load the kernel file "mach_kernel," which is damaged or missing.
    This is apparently because of a file system error (Invalid Key Length), a serious error Disk Utility is not designed to repair, since the repair usually involves loss of data & that app is very conservative about such things.
    It is almost impossible that the update itself is responsible for creating this error but very common for one to exacerbate it if it already exists. This is because file system errors corrupt files when the OS writes files to the disk, & updates write a lot of files to the disk.
    If you have implemented a backup strategy, the fix is straightforward, if a little time consuming: reformat the drive, do a new install of the OS from the installer disks, & restore your data from your backups.
    If you have not implemented a backup strategy, you now know why one is essential: no data you cannot afford to lose should reside only in one place like your internal hard drive. Data is lost every day because of human error, theft, hardware failure, or a host of other reasons. Only a good backup strategy can prevent this.
    Assuming the second situation applies to you, your best bet is to purchase a more powerful disk repair utility like DiskWarrior to see if it can repair the file system damage with minimal data loss. Be sure you read & heed the app's manual before using it! Failure to do so, or attempting to use the computer before the errors are repaired, will almost certainly result in more data loss.

  • HT1710 If I click archive and install and it says moves existing system files to a folder named previous system , will this save my photos tol

    I have to restore my Mac mini and i want to click on archive and install and it says it will move existing files to a folder but I need to know wether my photos will be moved too because I have 5 years worth of photos on there. If my photos will not be moved could I take it too a store and they could put them onto a USB stick for me.

    "Archive and install" is an option in early versions of OS X installers. It moves some parts of the previous system to a folder called "Previous System" and installs the new OS.
    There is also an option to presever user data and settings. See this document. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1710
    If you have 5 years' worth of photos and you do not want to lose them, then you NEED to have a backup. Hard drives can fail. Suddenly. Particularly on aging hardware. Computers can get stolen, set on fire or have drinks spilt over them.
    If you do not have a backup, you should EXPECT to lose your files.
    You should not need a store to make a copy of your files. Get an external drive, or use DVDs and move the files in the Finder. If you're using Leopard already, then you have Time Machine.

  • Eudora and Archive & Install

    The only way it could mess up is Disk Problems.

  • Installing leopard as an 'archive and install' and problems!

    I have just made and archive and install of leopard on my macbook and although the programme told me the installing had been accomplished without problems, the computer could not start up. Instead of starting up it entered a sort of loop where it displayed the Mac apple and had a weel spinning for some minutes, then the screen went black as if it restarted the computer and then it went back to the mac apple on a grey/blue background and the spinning weel.
    Can anybody help me with this problem? What has gone wrong and how can a save my computer!

    This is just my disaster day! I finally managed to get Leopard installed, but despite the fact that I did an 'archive and install' the installation process had not kept my files intact - most of my work files have gone it seems and the Leopard did start all over keeping none of my settings at all.
    I have now looked in the previous systems folder and only some files and settings are seemingly stored, but I don't know how to 'reinstall' them on my computer.
    I must admit that Mac very much resembles macrisoft products in this case. What a disaster!

  • Stack Underflow and Archive Install fail after 10.4.9 upgrade

    After performing the 10.4.9 upgrade on my Black MacBook Core Duo, each of the Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, Entourage, Power Point, and Office Updater and Office Installer) all abort on activation. The System Log indicates a stack underflow:
    Mar 24 11:36:38 Arakis /Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Microsoft Word: CGGStackRestore: gstack underflow.
    Attempts to reinstall office fail. Drag and Drop method and Using Office Installer App both fail. The Installer App also aborts with the same error.
    After speaking with Microsoft Support and trying their suggestions for removing prefrence files and MS user directory, all fail with the same results. Last Microsoft reccomendation is to perform Archive and Install, and upgrade only to 10.4.8 using combo update.
    So I Cloned my boot disk before performing Archive and Install (and it's a good thing too).
    I started the Archive and install, and all went well until disk 2, specifically while it was installing iLife demo. When it said two minutes remaining, it froze. Last log entry indicates "specified processes cannot be found". I left it to continue overnight (about 8 hours). It was in the same state in the morning. So I forced a Power down and restarted. It requested disk 1 and began the Archive and Install again, with the same results.
    I was able to boot off my external clone and restore my boot disk. I am now back to 10.4.9, and Office apps still abort with stack underflow.
    One other point. I have a G4 iMac, A Dual G5 Power Mac, and a G5 Mac Mini, all with 10.4.9 and MS Office, and they all work fine. Problem only seems to be on DualCore MacBook, and only Microsoft Office Apps. MS messenger and MS Remote Desktop Client for MAC work. All other apps (apple and 3rd party) also work OK.
    One last thing. After 10.4.9 upgrade, Finder quite often crashes when right clicking or Cotrol-clicking on files or folders in finder windows. Looking at crash dump indicates that this is an unrelated issue, which I will address later, in another rpost.
    Are there any suggestions on how to sucessfully perform an archive and Install? Is it possible to disable the install of optional software like iLife demo? Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
    Jeff Cameron
    DualCore MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    After spending a bit of time, researching this problem, it seems I have been bit by the dyldupdateprebinding bug while updating to 10.4.9. This is outlined in the article located at:
    http://www.unsanity.org/archives/macos_x/shock_andawe.php
    However I am still unable to repair my problem by performing an Archive and install (possibly because of the dyldupdateprebinding). So if anyone can help me do the Archive & install without installing the iLife demo, or any of the optional software, I would be most appreciative.
    Jeff

  • Login and Archive & Install issues

    I'm posting on behalf of a friend who's been having trouble with his macbook. He was having some issues with it earlier this evening, so he decided to reboot, and now he can no longer log in to the computer. When he tries to log in, the login window disappears as usual, and a generic background comes up for a few seconds, then the screen flashes blue and returns to the login screen. I have found posts by other users describing the same problem, and the solution is always to do an archive & install.
    Unfortunately, when he boots from the disc and goes to install OSX (Leopard), the only option available is erase & install. I've also found reports of this happening, but the solutions involve changing stuff while OSX is running, which obviously isn't an option here. Why would the archive & install option not be available?

    How to Perform an Archive and Install
    An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
    Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Difference between running Disk Utility and "Archive and Install"

    Hi all,
    I'm one of the poor souls who is having trouble with the software update 10.4.6. My iMac stopped halfway while doing the update, and when it attempted to do a restart, the iMac froze. I did the mistake of forcing it to shutdown, instead of just letting it take its time.
    Last night, I attempted the Safe Boot but it did not work. The progress indicator kept on spinning for hours! SHOULD I TRY IT AGAIN?
    Also, can someone tell me the difference between unning Disk Utility and "Archive and Install"? I figure I might have to do one of them to repair my iMac. I just want to do something that will reduce the chances of me wiping out my files. I also have the TechTool Deluxe CD with me. Should I be using that instead?
    Please help.

    i just had a simialr issue with my powerbook. I stress similar, but in the end i had the same issue with the start up screen (light blue, apple icon and the spinning indicator below it. I could not get past it.
    I ran disk utility from the boot disk, and got a kernel panic on verifying and and repairing permissions.
    So (and this is what Im suggesting you try) in disk utility I made a disk image of my internal hard drive and saved it to an external hard drive. Takes a while but a worthy precaustion.
    Second I went ahead and installed the OS on the external drive. Once that was done I boted from the external to oprn the disk image back up of my powerbooks internal drive. After that checked out i wnet back to the boot disk and did a clean install of the OS (wiping the internal) and things were fine after that.
    maybe wait and see how other people respond to this before jumping into it, but its smart to back everything up on an external any day.
    much luck to you
    -justin!
