Install and Run OS 9 on External USB HD to use with my MacBook?

For some reason I think this is an obvious answer. . . . but I can't find anything definitive on the support pages.
I need to use some software that only runs in OS 9. My idea was to install OS 9.x on my USB or Firewire Hard Drive, boot from there, then install/run software.
I seem to remember hearing something about OS 9 needing PowerPC rather than Intel processor. . . .?
Sorry to waste time if this is common knowledge.
If I am remembering correctly and OS 9 and intel don't jive, do I have any options? Aside from running software on another machine?

Intel Macs cannot boot into Mac OS 9. Even recent PowerPC Macs cannot boot into Mac OS 9. PowerPC Macs using Tiger or below can run most Mac OS 9 programs under the Classic environment. However, Intel Macs cannot do this either.
There is a program called SheepShaver.

I don't have experience with it, so please take a look at this option yourself.

  • What is a good external hard drive for use with a macbook air?

I am looking at purchasing a macbook air 13". What is a good external hard drive to use with it? Should I look for an external hard drive with its own a/c power or is the usb 3.0 capable of powering the external drive.

Have a look here for the sizes and prices.
It is however, much better to get a USB external drive that comes with it's own power adapter to avoid issues when or if your USB port can't supply enough power to your external drive.
That issue however does happen rarely but it does happen.  Especially when connecting other devices to your other USB port while your external hard drive is connected to your other usb port.

  • Install and run windows on/from external 3.0 usb

i installed windows 7 x64 ultimate on an external usb hard disk with the help of wintousb and now i can boot into windows
from it. so far so good. my notebook has 1 usb 2.0 and 3 usb 3.0. the problem comes from the fact that even if it works, i can only boot from the 2.0 usb!!! when i try to boot from one of the 3 3.0 usb, after the black screen with windows logo, i get blue
screen. now, my question is: is there a workaround (similar to the one for installer dvd) for my installed
windows to boot from 3.0 usb, or i will remain on usb 2.0 until i will buy a new internal hdd?! (i forgot to mention that my internal hdd is broken)
to install windows from usb 3.0 use this tutorial:

    They'll help you over here.

  • What is the best external hard drive to use with a macbook?

I am looking to buy an external hard drive for my macbook pro (2010).  I understand that some hard drives have issues when used with Lion.
Does anyone have any suggestions for which is the best to buy?

Any hard drive should work. I don't know of any issues caused by a specific brand of hard drive for working with Lion.
Now as far as the hard drive itself goes there are a few options. Most external drives run at 7200 rpm. Some however still run at 5400 rpm (rpm is the speed of the disk in layman's terms). Faster is better in most cases, however they do produce slightly more sound and run hotter, but not by much.
Then there is also the choice between USB and FireWire (thunderbolt is still to pricy). FireWire runs faster, but is more expensive.
    Those are your choices.

  • Will an external hard drive I used with my macbook work with ipad?

I am going to get ipad 3, I wanted to ask though, I had a macbook and three different external hard drives that I backed up over 500 gb of movies, tv shows, music on from the macbook, will they work on an ipad if I hook them up to the usb drive or are they only going to be compatible with the macbook and not ipad compatible?
How has anyone else transferred movies or tv shows that are old and on a back up hard drive and no longer in purchase history to redownload?
I want a work around so I can retire my old macbook and not have to get a new one and just have ipad as my only device.

K, so iPad's do not have USB ports.  They do offer a "camera connection kit" that plugs into the dock connector of an iPad that allows a camera to connect via USB, but if you try to connect other things it wont work.
What do you mean by "old movies or tvs that are no longer in purchase history"?
If you bought them through iTunes they stay in the "purchased" section forever.  I have movies and music in my purchase history I've bought as long ago as 10 years.  Unless these videos are from another source then perhaps you should still have them in your purchased section.

  • Reformating external hard drive for use with new MacBook Pro

I'm trying to figure out how to use an existing external hard drive (formatted for a Powermac G4) with my new MacBook Pro. I understand that the file formats are different and that I need to erase the hard drive and reformat it with a GUID partition, but how does one do that?
I've already erased the drive with disk utility (using the old Powermac) and connected it to my MacBook with the hope that it would be recognized. No dice, alas. It doesn't mount at all.
Any suggestions on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My external harddrives all work just fine with the MacBook Pro. You shouldn't have to reformat anything. I think if you did then it would not be backwards compatable with the older systems. Stick it back in your old computer and try to mount it again, repair permissions shutdown your macbook pro and connect the external drive then reboot

  • What kind of external microphone can I use with the MacBook Pro?

What kind of microphone can I use with GarageBand in MacBook Pro ?

It depends which MBP you have. Some of the newer ones don't have an audio in port, so you need a USB adapter with an audio in jack.

  • Choosing a partition map for an external usb, to be used with an external tv/media player

    hi there,
i was wondering if the type of partition map makes a difference if I am to transfer movies from my mac onto a usb, which will then slot into the usb slot on my samsung tv, which has a medial player built in ?
I am assuming that these media players and other devices similar, can only play on fat32 and not hfs ?
    many thanks

Correct, they can generally only read FAT32. FAT32, HFS+, NTFS, Ext4, etc. are not partition maps, rather they are different file systems. The partition map or type divides a physical disk into logical units called partitions, which then typically are formatted into a file system. Apple gives us a choice of 3 partition types; GUID, Apple Partition Map and Master Boot Record (MBR). If you need to boot up an Intel Mac from a drive, it must have GUID partitioning. If you must boot up a non-Intel OSX Mac, it must have an Apple Partition Map. If you need to boot up a MICROSOFT Windows machine, It must have a MBR partitioning.
If all you are using the USB thumb drive for is file transfer to non-Apple devices, the most compatible choice is MBR partition with FAT32 file system, although most devices seem to work just fine with GUID partition and FAT32 around my house.

  • Best external keyboard & mouse to use with a macbook pro running using wind

I have been looking at the mstand to use my macbook pro on a desk, & learned it needs an external keyboard & mouse. Is there these items that will work without glitches in both mac os & windows? I will be using mac os as well as windows. I would also like to keep the cost down for the keyboard & mouse.

I have a better solution .. look at moshi zephyr
I am currently using that with a magic mouse and things just couldn't be better

  • Are there any good external transflective displays to use with the MacBook Pro?

I have an early 2011 macbook pro, which is great for indoor use, but is absolutely unusable outside. I like to work outside when possible, but the glare on the screen makes it impossible.
I know there are transflective LCD displays that work great outside, like the Pixel Qi displays, which even support 1280x800 resolution (http://pixelqi.com/our_screens). I'm wondering if there's a consumer implementation of these that I could buy and plug into my macbook to use as my display while working outdoors.
Has anyone found a good portable transflective monitor that can plug into the mini display port or usb?

The new features can be found here:
    http://rufus.deuchler.net/2011/05/the-adobe-illustrator-new-features-cheat-sheet.html
As for the tutorials, I assume that would be very difficult, since people have moved on to the next version and you'll find a mixed variety of versions covered on most tutorial websites.
I would try Lynda.com. They might still have trainings categorised by versions.
And of course the Illustrator WOW book. You might even get used copies.

  • Install and run lepoard on a usb-harddrive

Hi! I wonder if it is possible to install and run leopard on an external harddrive with my macbook. The reason is that my harddrive has failed and I wont be able to get to mac service provider in a near future.
    Thanks!

This is easy to do and works well. Use your install disk to boot from while holding the C Key down. Now pick your external drive and install leopard just as you would on the internal drive. Choose custom installation so you can get rid of the extra language files and other stuff you don't want. To boot from it hold down the Option key to allow you to choose the external as the drive to operate from.

  • I already partitioned my hdd via Bootcamp, supports downloaded, and windows is on an external USB. How can I start installing Windows now? at startup it doesnt show up as bootable device...

    hi,
I am having a problem installing windows via bootcamp.
I already partitioned my hdd via Bootcamp, downloaded and copied all the supports for windows, and windows is on an external USB as well. I had to stop the process the other day, so i shut down the computer. Now I am trying to boot from the USB, but I cant get to that point where the computer should restart and windows would start installing.
. After restarting, holding command, it doesnt show up as bootable device.
How shall I move forward? My disk is already partitioned, and if i start the whole process from the beginning, it wants me to partition again - although I already made a 100GB partition for windows.
    Please help me out.
    best,
    Zoltan

So, here is what happened when I tried to make it.(sorry for quality, i had to take them by phone)
At first when I opened it I saw that I could simply resolve it just by stretching the arrow at the bottom, giving the 100 GB back which I partitioned before via Bootcamp. At this point options was not available.
I didnt do it because you mentioned earlier that it might be not designed to install windows.
The second thing I tried I choose 1 Partition from Partition Layout. This time Options were available but I didnt see anything like GPT, the onces that are optionable are on the screenshot.
What do you think how shall I move on? I was thinking to give it a shot with option 1, just stretch it back and try everything from scratch.

  • How to install and run USB device application without NI-VISA environment?

    Hi everyone:
I develop a LabWindows/CVI8.5 application that uses a driver for a USB device created using the NI-VISA 4.6.2. The application is ok when the NI-VISA  environment is installed in PC. But the  NI-VISA 4.6.2 is too big(326M).  Can be the USB device successfully installed in non-development machine without NI-VISA 4.6.2?  Just need some files, such as INF, NiViUsbK.sys and ni-visa32.dll, the device will be installed and run.   If the way is feasible, please tell me how to do. Which files are necessary to the device is installed in non-development machine without NI-VISA 4.6.2 environment? It is so big, I need a minimum NI-VISA system.
          I need your help.

Personally I use the open source LibUSB. It links without difficulty with
CVI. And it works both on Linux and Windows, which is a big plus. Haven't
touched it in 2 years though.
