Hi tow,
Welcome to the discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
Your AppleWorks install CD is one of the older ones, and the installer application on it runs in Mac OS 9.x.x. You have a couple of options:
1. Use your OS X install disk(s) to do a custom install of Mac OS 9.x.x and the Classic environment, then install AppleWorks using your AW install CD.
2. Find a Mac capable of running in Mac OS 9.x.x or Mac OS 8.x, install AppleWorks on that machine, then burn the newly installed AppleWorks 6 folder to a CD, and use that to transfer the folder and its contents to the Applications folder on your iBook. ApleWorks will create any other files and folders it needs as it is run. Remember to delete AppleWorks from the first machine, as your AW licence authorises installation of the application on only a single machine.
1a. If you use method 1, it's still a good idea to burn the AppleWorks 6 folder to a CD against the need to reinstall sometime in the future.

Barry

AppleWorks is a very old application and requires Rosetta to run under recent systems.
    Lion does not include Rosetta.

  • Can't install Appleworks in OS X

I have Appleworks 6 on CD and various updater files on other CDs. However the last time I reinstalled my OS on this machine I didn't bother installing Classic and without it I cannot install v. 6.0 and I believe until I install this, I can't install any of the OS X updaters
So my question is, is there any means by which I can install Appleworks without installing an entire Classic system folder?
With my utmost thanks in advance as always for your kind assistance
    Best regards
    Bernard

You don't have to buy a new Mac. The retail box of AppleWorks can be purchased at most retailers that sell Apple software, either in a "brick & mortar" or online store. Sometimes you can find it on eBay. Do a search for "AppleWorks" or "Apple Works" (some people put a "space" in the name).

  • I have a MacBook Pro.  I am told that I can install AppleWorks on this Intel Machine. True or False? If true do I need to have Rosetta on the compuer?

I have an Intel MacBook Pro. I have been told I can install AppleWorks 6.2.9 on this machine. Is this correct? I read somewhere I would also need Rosetta but do not know if this is correct. If so how can i get Rosetta? I can presently open my old Appl;eWorks documents with Pages but my wife insist I try to get her AppleWorks back?
I had a copy of AppleWorks 6.0 from the old days but it would not install on my MacBook. A message came up saying Apple no longer supports OS9. I can purchase a copy of AppleWorks 6.2.9 but if it want install then I would be wasting my money.
    Thanks,  john

To install Rosetta you insert your initial Snow Leopard installation disk and double click optional install then double click the optional install package which will lead you through installing Rosetta. It is on the  install disk but is not installed by default.
Once you get Appleworks 6 working, assuming it then does, you can download the 6.2.9 update

  • How can I install Appleworks on a new Mac?

I've been using Macs since 1993, and have a lot of old files in Appleworks format. Whilst I now use Office and iWork '08, I'd be lost without Appleworks for many old files. Is it possible to install Appleworks on a new Mac, running Leopard? I hope to replace my laptop soon, but the fact its been discontinued has put my off for now. Any help gratefully received!

You can install AppleWorks 6.2.4 or AppleWorks 6.2.9 on your new Mac, using an install disk that has an OS X installer. (Installers prior to mid 2001 ran in Mac OS 9, and although the version of AppleWorks they install will likely run on Tiger or Leopard, the installer won't.)
Getting hold of a retail version may prove a bit difficult, as Apple is no longer supplying it to retailers. Hard Core Mac was reported recently to have install disks containing AppleWorks 6.2.4, and AW 6 does come up occassionally on eBay and other similar sites.
If the laptop you are replacing contains AppleWorks, you can transfer the application to your new machine by simply moving the whole AppleWorks 6 folder and its contents into the Applications folder on the new machine. Doing this via a CD will give you a backup copy should you ever need to reinstall the application. AppleWorks will create any other required files and folders as it needs them. Note that the usual single user licence allows for only a single copy of the application to exist on a single computer at a time. After moving the AW 6 folder to the new machine, you should delete it from the old to stay within the terms of the licence.

  • Can't install Appleworks 6 on Intel/Leopard

I bought a new iMac last week after my Powerbook died. Today I installed the Leopard upgrade on it. Then I got out my Appleworks 6 CD to install it, but Leopard refuses, saying "because the Classic environment is no longer supported." This is an early version of Appleworks 6; it says it requires OS 8.1 or greater.

Obviously, you have an early AppleWorks 6 CD when the installer was only OS 8/9. It wasn't until sometime in 2001 when the AppleWorks installer also included an OS X version.
You have a couple of choices to get AppleWorks 6 installed on your new iMac. The easiest would be to buy a new package, but that may not be necessary. The best solution is to find someone with a Mac that has Classic or runs OS 8 or 9 & can burn a CD. Install AppleWorks 6 on the other Mac, update AppleWorks to at least version 6.2.4 & then burn the whole AppleWorks 6 folder to a CD. You can then copy the AppleWorks 6 folder to the Applications folder on your iMac. This CD will now be your backup should you ever need to reinstall AppleWorks again.
If you don't know someone else with a Mac you can use, a local Mac user group is a good place to start. You can search for one on Apple's Find a User Group page.
To keep within the Apple user license, you need to remove the copy from the Mac you used to install AppleWorks. If the someone already has AppleWorks installed, just burn their folder to the CD. You will remain within the license since you do have a license for AppleWorks for your Mac.

  • Installing AppleWorks on Intel Mac

I am about to buy a MacBook. As a teacher with older Macs in my classroom, I still use AppleWorks. However, as I recall the disk I use to install AppleWorks is an OS 9 program that I then update using the 6.2.9 updater to run under OS X. Since the Intel Macs don't support Classic, is there a way I will be able to install AppleWorks?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Whether or not the installer you have will run in OS X depends on when it was made. The installers for AppleWorks 6.2 or higher, after mid-2001 or so, are OS X installers. Otherwise, copy the whole AppleWorks 6 folder from the Applications folder from an older Mac to the Intel Mac. Burning it to a CD will give you a backup should you ever need to reinstall. Do not copy over any preferences (except the Button Bar preferences if you have customized the Button Bar) or the AppleWorks User Data folder. To keep within the Apple end user license, remove AppleWorks from the first Mac.

  • Can't install Appleworks 6.0.4

I remember this happening before but I just can't remember what to do.
Just reinstalled 10.2 on my Powerbook G3 and want to install Appleworks 6.0.4 but for some reason the installer wants me to install an OS9 version only.
I distinctly remember buying this for OSX but there doesn't seem to be one for OSX and I can't seem to work out how to install it on 10.2!
I remember something similar to this happening before and I had to install it onto a Partition with OS9 on and it would open straight up into 10.2 without using Classic.
    Thanks

You need Classic to run the installer, even though the program installs in OS X. Back when Appleworks 6 was invented, there was no such thing as an OS X only machine. You'll need to install Classic if you don't have it, or if you still have a copy of Appleworks on another computer, just drag the appleworks folder from the applications folder of the old machine to that of the new machine.
Once you've got Appleworks installed, you'll need to update to at least 6.2.4 to have the program run with any stability in OS X.

  • Installing Appleworks on new iMac

I just replaced my iMac G5 (running Tiger) with a new Intel-based iMac (also running Tiger). The G5 came with Appleworks bundled; the new one did not. I'm reasonably sure that it is legal for me to install Appleworks on the new iMac (as long as I remove it from the old one); I just don't know how. It won't allow me to install from the install/restore CDs that came with the G5. Can I just copy the Appleworks (US English) folder to the Applications folder on the new machine?

    Hi
You should be able to do just that, yes, using firewire. Try just dragging & dropping from 1 computer to the other, if that fails:
    Shut down both computers
Connect computers using 6-pin to 6-pin firewire cable.
    Boot up Intel iMac normally.
Boot up G5 holding down T until firewire symbol appears on screen.
    Navigate to HD/Applications on Intel.
    Navigate to HD/Applications on G5.
    Put windows side-by-side.
Drag & drop Appleworks folder into Intel's Applications folder.
    Eject G5's disk icon & shutdown G5.
    Shut down Intel.
    Disconnect wire.
One more thing, make sure it's Appleworks 6.2.4 or above.

  • Installing Appleworks 6 onto OS X (10.4.11) - it won't!!

I've always used Appleworks since I first bought an Apple back in 1996 but after a recent hard-drive failure I had to reload my OS onto an erased drive. I had backed up all my files and documents but a week later I tried to access an Appleworks document only to find that I hadn't yet reinstalled Appleworks.
As I'm sure many of you know the Appleworks 6 CD will not install onto OSX but requires Classic - which I don't have.
My copy of OS9.1 won't install - don't ask me why but I can't startup from the CD either through Preferences or holding down the C key.
Is there any other way of getting Appleworks to load from the original CD onto OSX?

The AppleWorks install CD is not a bootable disk.
Your OS 9 installer is too old for your Quick Silver machine.
But the Power Mac G4 Software Install disk deliver with your QuickSilver (grey disk) is able to install Mac OS 9.2.1 which may be used to install AppleWorks.
Leave the HD with Mac Os X installed
    insert the Software Install CD
run the system Installer and ask it to install Classic.
So, you will have both Operating systems available on your machine.
After that, replace the Software Install CD by the AppleWorks one.
Double click on the installer icon.
It will run under Classic and will do its duty.
When finished, burn a CD storing the newly installed AppleWorks 6 folder so it will be available if you are forced to re-install one day.

  • Installing Appleworks into OS X

I just bought a used G5 PCIe machine and have been installing apps and realized that I needed Appleworks and I didn't have Classic installed. Is there a doc somewhere on how to install OS 9.2.2 into OS X.4.8. Also is there any other way to install Appleworks into OS X.4.8 or open docs without Appleworks. I think I tried this before and iWork won't open Claris/Appleworks docs.

Yes, a quick search from Apple Support found it.
    <http://www.apple.com/support/tiger/classic/>
MacFixIt also has something to say.

    into OS X.4.8...
From 2001 AppleWorks was shipped with a Mac OS X native installer. In other words, there was no need to install Classic just to install AppleWorks. (It was either 2001 or 2003. I can never remember, but Peggy might read this message and correct me if I'm wrong.)
Another option is to install AppleWorks on a Mac that has Classic installed, then burn the AppleWorks 6 folder to a CD, copy it onto your new Mac, and delete it from the first Mac.
... or open docs without Appleworks.
I think I tried this before and iWork won't open
    Claris/Appleworks docs.
iWork will only open word processing documents saved with AppleWorks 6.
Microsoft Office can open AppleWorks 5 and 6 word processing documents.
Also, tools like icWord and icExcel can open AppleWorks 5 and 6 word processing documents and spreadsheets. A 30 day trial is available from the web site. (Google will find them for you.)

  • How do I re-install AppleWorks

I have an iBook with system 10.4.3. I need to reinstall Appleworks, and I'm using Pacifist to extract it from my system CDs. The problem is that I cannot find Appleworks, even if I go as far back as Panter.
Where would this program be? I cannot find it in Tiger either.
    Any suggestion would be appreciated.

My son has an iBook G4. He received the following 9 CDs with it:
    Install Disc 1, 2 and 3 (3 discs)
    Software Restore 1, 2, 3 and 4 (4 discs)
    World Book Encyclopaedia (1 disc)
    Apple Hardware Test (1 disc)
AppleWorks 6 can be installed from the Software Restore discs. But the installer doesn't let you install AppleWorks. You have to install all the applications or none.
If you can't locate AppleWorks 6 on the Software Restore discs using Pacifist, then I'd suggest restoring all the applications. This shouldn't affect your Mac OS X installation. But it will mean that you will have to re-update your applications such as iMovie, etc.

  • How to install AppleWorks?

    Hi there,
I switched from Windows to Mac and don't know what to do with a Ziplight.mdimporter-document which seems to be my AppleWorks install(er) file (and also of some other software I downloaded from the internet).

This isn't an AppleWorks related file. It looks more like a Spotlight plugin for a program called Ziplight.
Are you trying to install AppleWorks on your new Mac? If so, it can be found on the Install CD that came with your new Mac. You should be able to choose a Custom installation and then select the language you'd like to use.

  • Strange folder called "System Folder" appeared after installing Appleworks?

I started from scratch and wiped the drive, due to bad system symptoms. I installed OSX WITHOUT OS9 CLASSIC. Everything is working fine, printer drivers, internet, all apps etc. But I decided to install Appleworks. I chose from the reinstall choices to select Appleworks, but did not select Classic at all at anytime. I just discovered besides the OSX system folder with its distinctive design, that there is now another folder named System Folder, but it has no system and only Application Support, Extensions, Fonts, and help as folders. This looks like OS9 without a system. Was this installed for Appleworks?, as I remember from OS 9 Appleworks needs to install stuff in a system folder. Is that why this is here? Is this normal, The "System Folder" was locked. Should I do anything to this, delete it, rename it or what. Command info says that it belongs to system, not me, and it defaults to locked. I can unlock it, but to change its ownership, admin password is needed. I thought everything was going well, now this questionable stuff shows up, and enlightenment would be appreciated, as I just spend days fixing it all up, and don't want more trouble, especially so soon. Remember, Classic has not been installed, but I did first tried an archive and reinstall, and had a previous system folder, but I don't think this was dragged over from archived stuff when working on this whole new clean setup.
    Thanks, James

Thanks for the simple answer. I guess I was surprised to see another folder called system, and it kind of scared me, wondering if everything was "Kosher" with my reinstallation of OSX?, yet I didn't want to adversely effect Appleworks.
I merely put the files in the trash, then tested Appleworks, it still works, so I believe I can trash the whole folder without worry. I was worried and not thinking correctly, having spent sleepless nights installing all the stuff back again, and that clouds my thinking and judgment. James
