is it possible to install oracle application on an
external hard disk
Yes it is possible.
Why would you need to give a boot sequence for a USB
drive?if we use an external harddisk how the OS loads ?
in internal Harddisk we give the boot sequence
if there is no internal harddisk and we r using only external harddisk will it run the applications

  • Is it possible to install apps on an external drive?

    Hi.
I'm leasing an Imac for 2 years, and then can trade it in for the next generation.
Rather than have to re-install the  apps, is it possible to put them on an external thunderbolt or 800  firewire drive?
    Thanks.

Most applications only install on the boot drive, though with some it's possible to move them after installation, or to choose where they install. The best approach is probably to just install them on the boot drive as normal, then clone your entire hard drive to an external drive when it comes time to upgrade your system. You can then use Migration Assistant to move your applications, settings and documents from the external drive to your new system, or just clone it back (assuming that the version of Mac OS X on the
Note though that in two years, it's quite probably that your current applications will need to be upgraded to be compatible with the version of Mac OS X then available - certainly 10.7 Lion and perhaps even yet a newer version by then - and you'll quite possibly need to reinstall at least some the applications anyway.

    Thanks Dirk,
Tried your suggestion various ways but it had no effect the download button was still greyed out and the install button would not activate will keep trying to find a solution. I dont want to boot from the external hard drive that has Lion on mainly because it is a usb HD and the connection to my wireless modem slows the connection rate and downloading would take about ten hours

  • Install and run app from App Store on external hard drive?

I just made the switch from a MBP to an Air, and am figuring out how to best utilize an external hard drive (1 TB) to save space on my internal drive (128 GB).
I am not sure how the performance will be, but I would like to at least try out running Bioshock Infinite (39 GB, purchased through the App Store) from the external drive.  My biggest hurdle right now is figuring out how to properly install the app on my external drive.  Here's what I've tried so far:
    1. When I try to install it from the App Store, there's no way to choose where it is installed, and because I don't have much space left on my internal drive, I of course get the error that there is not enough disk space available to install.
    2. When I copy the app from my old MBP to my external drive, and then try to run it on my Air, I get an error that the file is corrupt, and am told to reinstall it.
What can I do to be able to play Bioshock Infinite on my Air without it taking up nearly a third of my internal drive space?  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Apple Discussion Forums!
I will have to think about your problem for now. But an easier way to copy your CD's to your computer is:
On iTunes, open up preferences then click on the "Advanced" tab. You will then see "iTunes Music folder location. And you will see where your music is being saved on your computer. There are two boxes to the right that say "Change..." "Reset". Click on the "Change..." button and select your folder on your MyBook. iTunes will now import the music from your CD's into that folder AND this is where all of your music will need to be if you want to play it on your computer. What this is doing is pulling the music from the folder that you selected other than the folder on your computer.

  • Running games and apps on an external drive?

I have a macbook pro with windows 7 using bootcamp and the hard drive partition is filling up. I can't really assign it any more space on the boot drive because I need it for what's running on the osx partition.
Is it possible to put some games or software on an external drive rather than on the boot drive and run them from there in order to save space on the boot drive?
I would use a 7200 rpm drive with a firewire 800 connection. Would this affect the performance of the games?
    Thanks for any advice.

    Hi Luis,
theat really depends on the games/apps you run.
During installation of these games/apps you might or might not get the oportunity to change the destination folder of where to install the game/app.
Some allow it to install them to a different folder/harddisk and some don't.
But there usually it still some parts that have to be installed on the Windows system partition (c:).
Also depending on the games/apps you might be able to move them after installation but most likely this will only work for a very few of them.
When using the external harddisk you might experience a slight decrease in speed, especially when large parts have to be read from that external HD, but it should be acceptable.

  • Managing installed apps for multiple devices

Is there a way to create an "app playlist" in order to easily create a common set of installed apps across multiple devices?  I'm tired of having to install the same app on each of my kids devices.  Also, I don't want to enable auto install new apps because I don't necessarily want my kids to get apps that I'm installing on my devices.
    Thanks

The un-compatible updates will not install on the iPod.
Make sure that you retain a copy of the version that is compatible with iOS 4.2.1 since you can only redownload the latest version version from the App store.
I would backuyp the library to an external HD by:
iTunes: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive
Note that when you update an app on the iPod and then sync, the update apps is also synced to the iTunes library.

  • Cannot proceed with installing Lion on an external drive

    Hi everyone,
I have a late 2008 MacBook Pro, 10.6.8 installed. I'm trying to install Lion on an external HDD connected via an ExpressCard/SATA adapter. The target HDD has GUID table with a single partition containing a couple of regular folders (no OS installed). I boot up my Snow Leopard OS, run the Lion installation, choose the external HDD and it starts the installation with no warnings.
Then when the progress bar reaches the end, I'm told to close all applications and restart. After the restart I'm suddenly booted to my old Snow Leo. I see a Mac OS Install Data folder on the external drive, but I cannot boot off it and cannot continue the installation.
I have a suspicion that the problem might be that I haven't formatted the drive and it contained some data when I started the installation, but I doubt this is the cause. I don't want to format the drive because it contains some necessary data.
If anyone encountered anything like that, please describe your cases.
    Thanks a lot

Hi. Thanks a lot for the quick response. I bought Lion on the App Store but it's not downloading. It says "Waiting..." and has now for ten minutes. It's also trying to download the update to another app and it's saying "Waiting..." for that one too. Not sure what to do or what is going wrong.
Okay, just now the download started working. I would delete this reply but I don't see how to do it.

  • I have Tiger. Can I install Lion on an external drive?

I have an iMac Intel Core 2 Duo running Tiger. What I would like to do is install Lion on an external hard drive and have the ability to boot up using either Tiger or Lion as the occasion arises. Reason being, I have some software apps that would no longer run on anything higher than Tiger and would require $1200 worth of upgrades. While I plan to eventually make such upgrades (and perhaps buy a new Mac to put it all on), for now I'm seeking an interim solution.
In short, I want to take advantage of what Lion has to offer in the way of increased speed and flexibility (especially with internet surfing) while at the same time being able to boot up part of the time in Tiger to continue to run my older apps when needed.
So, can it be done? Install Lion on an external HD? Or do I need to install Snow Leopard first, then upgrade to Lion? Or is none of this possible without buying a new computer and just keeping my old machine to run Tiger with the older apps?

The short answer is yes, the somewhat longer answer is that you must should first install Snow Leopard. With the exception of Classic / OS 9 everything you do with Tiger should run fine in Snow Leo.
    Lion System Requirements: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4949
Next you will need more memory. Consider Lion's specfied 2 GB minimum with a great degress of skepticism. That is a very small cage for this cat. 4 GB is a more realistic minimum.
If I interpret your system correctly, you have a mid-2009 iMac. It can address 8 GB memory. Lion will be very comfortable with that amount.

  • How to install Yoesmite on an external drive?

    I followed the guide here
OS X: Installing OS X on an external volume - Apple Support
But the problem is after the initial installation on the drive, the system reboots and it goes back to the same setup screen. I repeated the process a few times and it just repeats. Am I missing anything?
I skipped the partition step, because I don't need bootcamp or a restore drive. I simply reformatted the drive and proceeded with the installation.

I followed the instruction which is, download the install from the mac app store. Run the install, and targeted the external disk. Then it rebooted, downloaded some more files and finished the installation. Then did a final reboot. At which point it booted into the install screen again and repeated.
I'll double check the GUID part today but I'm pretty sure I formatted it correctly.
So to answer your question, no I did not do a clone. I also did not install it from command R. But I don't think those two things are necessary according to apple's support page.

  • Can I install os9 on an external drive from mavericks

Can I install OS9 on an external drive from Mavericks? I'm running Mavericks 10.9.4 on both my MBP and 27" iMac. I have my original OS9 install disc. I'd like to install OS9 on an external drive so I can use some classic apps that I'd like to use.
I tried to install directly to an external drive, but when I click on the Mac OS Install icon, I get the message "You can't open the application "%@" because it may be damaged or incomplete." The icon for Mac OS Install is the generic page with an A. Figuring that Mavericks doesn't recognize the app. Then I restarted and held down the C key - no luck.

I understand, but was hoping I boot off an external drive in 9. Thanks for your response and I apologize for my late response.

  • How to stop apps on an external drive from launching or showing up in menus

I use SuperDuper to keep a bootable back up of my main drive. The problem is those apps show up in the list of apps that can open a particular file, and if its the same version on the main drive and the external, you'll often launch the app from the external drive.
This is a especially a problem when using the "open with" feature. Is there a way to make sure it only reads apps installed on the main drive.

    Hi,
sorry to hijack, but I have a similar question you may be able to help with.
I too keep a Super Duper clone, but on a second internal drive - I often use the "Open With" contextual menu option to open files, and it bugs the **** out of me that I have to wait several seconds for the second drive to spin up - freezing the Finder in the process. What's even more annoying is that I also use the contextual menu to move things to the trash, which invariably stalls on "Open With" because it's above it in the menu.
Do you know of any means of solving this increasingly annoying problem. I know I could simply unmount the second drive, but that interferes with Super Duper's scheduled backups.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated

  • HT4904 Help. I have an older 20 inch iMac and had Lion running on it but the internal hard drive died. I'm trying to install Lion on an external drive but it doesn't look like Lion Recovery is supported. I have Leopard installed but am stuck.

    Hello,
My 20inch iMac's internal drive died and I'm trying to re-install Lion on an external drive. If I could get the Lion DMG file I think I'd be all set but am not sure how to do this. It doesn't look like the Lion Recovery feature is supported in my older iMac. And I have Leopard installed on the external drive but there's no AppStore to download the Lion DMG file.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    -Lee

Without a bootable backup/clone or a Time Machine backup of your previous Snow Leopard installation or a saved copy of Lion's install app, you'll have to upgrade your Leopard volume to Snow Leopard (10.6.6+) so you can waste another hour or more DLing the Lion thing again.

  • External harddisk became extremely slow after reformat using disk utility

hello everyone~ let me try to describe as clear as possible!
to start with, i have 2 external harddisk:
    hd(A)-120G, format in Mac OS Extended (journaled), it's and old harddisk and is nearly full;
hd(B)-200G, format in MS-DOS (ie. FAT32), it's a new harddisk with plenty of space.
what i wanted to do: make both hd(A) & hd(B) read & writable in mac & windows.
so, i tried to move all files in hd(A) to hd(B), hope to reformat the hd(A) to MS-DOS. but then i found out many big files can't be moved to hd(B) at all, and then i found out there's a 4G limit to the FAT32 format.
then, i tried to format hd(B) in NTFS, hoping that it can be read & writable with the help of MacFuse in both mac & windows without file size limit. so i downloaded and installed the MacFuse in my mac and format the hd(B) in a PC with Vista. well i was a bit impatient.. so i chose quick format only. then i plugged it in my mac~ yes it's readable & writable!! but the speed was like... 2mbps.......yes, 2MB per second. i really can't stand this speed! i thought it's becoz of the NTFS format... maybe it makes the transfer speed slow in mac?
so finally... i reformat the hd(B) into Mac OS Extended (journaled) using Disk Utility in OSX. i gave up the idea to make it usable in both mac & window.. i juz want the bigger harddisk to serve as a backup storage harddisk and i'll be happy with that already. so, after the format, i started moving files from hd(A) to hd(B)...and....well... the speed remained at 2MB per second.... which means, it takes like an hour to transfer juz 2G or so... i think the speed is very strange right?? maybe i messed it up making it different formats one time and another... and i dunno what to do with it now!!
    anyone...please help me?? =(

Hi aniDa, and a warm welcome to the forums!
You might try reformatting it but choose the Security Option button to Zero Data once.
    Did you reboot everything?
You can also make your PCS R/W HFS+ with MacDrive ...
