Install Arch with dual graphics laptop
Hey everybody,
So a few months ago I bought a new laptop, and ASUS X750JN. After I have my new laptop on my hands the first thing was install Arch Linux, but I came across an problem with graphics, probably a bad configuration and because I needed the computer for the university, I keep Windows for a while. Now that I have some time, I want to return to my beloved Arch but I have a serious question, the computer has 2 graphics cards, on-board Intel and an Nvidia and my question is, how can I install Arch and use Nvidia for some games like ETS, CS:GO and Guns of Icarus? When I tried installing before, the VGA was the Intel and not the Nvidia.
I know that Hybrid Graphics aren't full supported in Linux, but is there a way to use Arch with the Nvidia, even if only uses Nvidia.
Thanks in advance,
Have a nice Christmas and a Happy 2015,
Hugo Rodrigues.

Have you looked in our Wiki? We have these for starters:

When I was research I look it up on the second link but not on the first one.
So, like I said above, today I have installed Arch with Bumblebee and so far so good, but I just have a question, how I run games using optirun throw Steam?

Hey Huago, I'm not sure if will help you as I don't know too much about your configuration, but I'm also experiencing some issues while configuring arch on my lenovo T420s. I have so far succeeded in starting a simple x session after installing the drivers for intel and nvidia (xf86-video-intel xf86-video-nouveau) (see my thread here but my current problem is, that I can't start gdm
I'll work on this and opened a new thread here - maybe we can assist each other until everything is up and running.
update: I got it - maybe it works for you too? (very short description of what i did):
install drivers for integrated and discrete graphics card
launch gdm as root
I have an Asus X750JN and I just install the integrated and discrete graphics and enabled gdm service.

Let's start by using the HP Support Assistant to check for any updates and drivers to see if that resolves the issue. If that doesn't work then go your Control Panel and then Programs and Features and uninstall the Catalyst Control Center. Then try installing both the Intel High-Definition Audio Driver and the AMD High-Definition Audio Driver.

Installing Arch WinXP Dual-Boot
Hello! I'm new with Arch-Linux.
I'm trying to install Arch with Windows XP. I looked at the guide and several threads but I can not solve my problem. I make an installation in "Legacy" because my drive is IDE. I have installed Win XP. I do manually the partitions partitions / boot, /, / swap, / home, all logic, after the XP ntfs. And then I install the grub in the MBR which is on the XP partition. When booting, I get a dual-boot XP and I started without problems, but when I boot Arch I get the following problem:
FileSystem CHECK FAILED
And here I have not managed to solve anything, I have consulted several forum threads where people could think the same thing, wiki, but I have not been solved. If anyone can help me with the installation, or if I am wrong partition table or something, I would be very helpful.
Sorry about my English, it isn't my frist language.
Last edited by xunele (2009-11-13 11:48:32)I can see two issues here:
I install the grub in the MBR which is on the XP partition
The MBR is not on any partition, is sits at the beginning of your disk. Partitions have bootsectors. And you should not install anything into the boot sector of the XP partition, since that will make XP unable to boot. Wikipedia is quite good on these topics.
Secondly, /boot must be on a primary partition. -
Hello,
I'm trying to install Arch with PXE, and for this I'm using two VM in VirtualBox. I've followed all steps in the Wiki, also I tried to use a script ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ar … pxe_server ).
Following the main PXE wiki article, when I mount the archlinux-boot image, I can't find isolinux subfolder in order to copy contents into /var/tftpd/ folder. Article seems to be out of date.
¿Any idea? I've dhcpd server running and I executed mkpxelinux -c=/etc/mkpxelinux.conf command, but I don't know what I need to do right now.
Thanks for all.Hi
nbd in 2010.05 images is old
nbd in your system is new
archiso-pxe-server script try to keep compatible with old (untested) and new nbd.
Try this on ramfs prompt:
nbd-client the-server-ip -N archiso /dev/nbd0 -presist
mount -r -t udf /dev/nbd0 /bootmnt
logout
Download a recent update archiso-pxe-server-20101012 (just now)
If does not work, try to build your archiso up-to-date using my branch that have the fix[#1]. See here how http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Use … lean_build

Installing Arch with intel wireless (iwlwifi-3945)
i have tried various times in the past few weeks to install arch with minimal success. The only time i was able to actually set up a system that would allow me to get to a gui and use the internet was when i had an install of Archie Linux (Live CD) that i had to chroot with kubuntu to add wireless support. Needless to say i preferred a cleaner install (especially after having to manually rename the folders, etc. for the repository changes).
Anyways when arch is loading it makes mention of needing to append the boot image to include intel-wireless. i was wondering what exactly was involved in doing that. Because after trying to just install the package ifconfig does not show my wlan device. Any help is appreciated. let me know if more info is needed.pl2lnce wrote:

I have Arch with iwl3945 drivers running here just fine. No tweaks to the cpio image needed.
I have never heard of this either... You need both the drivers and the firmware. Check dmesg if everything is okay. Ifconfig -a should show a wlan0 device, if not, something went wrong.

Since 1.1.0 stability is just fine. Throughput is still a problem though. I get like 2.8 MBps with earlier versions, and the 1.1.21 one can hit it too, but mostly it's around 1 MBps . I prefer that to yet another proprietary package though. It's not every day I transfer a few GB to my wired server .

How to install Arch for dual-boot with Win 7 (on 2 hard drives)?
Hello,
the TLDR first: how exactly should I proceed when setting up GRUB for 2 hard drives to dual-boot Arch (64 bit)and Win 7 (64 bit)?
Long version: So, I have the following hard drive & partition layout:
On my first hard drive (250 GB big) I have: Win 7 64 bit, all the programs for Windows and of course the EFI partition
My second hard drive is 1 TB big and formatted in NTFS and it only contains data. It has 2 partitions, one is about 750 GB big and used for simple storage.
Sidenote 1: sometimes my disk management (Windows' own gparted) shows either the little disk or the big one as disk 0. Don't know what exactly this means, but I have never ever experienced any problems whatsoever during use.
Sidenote 2: the UEFI motherboard (ASRock H67M) cannot boot into Legacy mode.
I want to install Arch on a ~200 GB partition on the second hard drive (the one with 1 TB). (click here if you want to see a screenshot) I am posting this because I am confused with how exactly I should deal with the whole "2 hdds & UEFI" thing.
So how exactly should I proceed when setting up GRUB for this setup?
For partitioning I suppose I would have to use fdisk or cgdisk. I used cgdisk before and found it to be straightforward. Then, because I have experienced my fair share of problems with rEFInd, I'd like to use GRUB.
Last edited by jones (2013-06-29 14:36:56)First thing you should do is become familiar with your motherboard.
http://www.asrock.com/mb/manual.asp?Model=H67M
This will probably help you out in understanding the sidenote 1 thingie (hdd's on sata3 and/or sata2 connectors)
As on sidenote 2, according to the manual it seems to be possible to boot legacy mode, see Storage Configuration. -
My laptop currently does not have a disk drive and I want to install Arch Linux as a dual-boot with Ubuntu 12.04. Do I just copy the Arch iso to a thumbdrive and get my computer to boot from the thumbdrive? When I do this a get a "Boot error."
Please read through the Beginner's Guide: it includes detailed instructions on how to do this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Be … _USB_stick

Install Arch over Mint on laptop
So I decided to dabble with Arch in Virtualbox and now I've decided that I want to install my .iso of Arch over my Mint partition. So I know there is a tutorial on the wiki on how to make my version into an .iso which shouldn't be an issue for me, but I just want to verify with you folks if I'll be doing this right on my laptop.
I have 3 partitions right now on a 750GB HDD:
500(ish)GB Windows 7 partition (sadly, it can't be shrunk anymore)
15GB to a recovery partition for Windows
then 100(ish)GB remaining for Linux Mint 16
My thoughts are to back up any data I want to keep and should I just load up my .iso from a flash drive and install Arch like I would have in a VM? Would cfdisk show all my partitions and give me the chance to just erase my current Linux partition? Not sure how I should go about all of this...or would it be best just to redo the process from scratch? All I have installed really is the base Arch install, alsa, and XFCE.
EDIT:
Edited to avoid confusion on my 100GB Linux partition
Last edited by stratacast1 (2014-01-06 23:00:38)karol wrote:You can just use the stock Arch iso.
How are you expecting to have 2 Linux systems on one partition? I don't recall our wiki saying you could do anything like this :-) Create a new partition, format it and install arch in there.
Okay I'll do that! I meant to say that I'll be reformatting my Linux Mint partition and putting Arch there instead I could have sworn I read something like that, or at least somewhere on the internet..but either way, I think I'll just do what you said! I think it'd be great to try installing Arch for the 4th time haha! Helps me memorize how to use the OS better!
Since I'll be running Arch on the actual machine rather than a VM, will I eventually have to install drivers for my wireless NIC? I was thinking I'd install Arch on a wired connection so I didn't have to worry about my slow download speeds -
Installing Arch with UNetbootin, error
I'm trying to install Arch on my HP dv1040 laptop with UNetBootin and haven't been able to do much. When I boot up and select UNetbootin, linux starts running and decompressing and stuff but then it says "Waiting 30 seconds for device /dev/archiso" and fails to find it. I'm kinda lost for what to do. I've tried reinstalling UNetbootin like 5 times with different options such as using my iso image, or letting UNet download it for me. Can anyone help me?
I have WinXP as my current OS.Solved for me.
sudo dd bs=8M if=archlinux-2009.08-netinstall-i686.img of=/dev/sdc
Works only for the netinstall images though. I'll get an error during install with core, but this might also be because my usb stick is fubar.
@celtic426
You should try to use the netinstall images with UNetBootin. I had no luck with the core ones and unetbootin though.
Another solution should be to boot from an ubuntu livecd/usb-stick (works with unetbootin, I already tried it) and then dd the image on the usb stick as the wiki says: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Off … tion_Media

Dual booting with other linux distros
This is done exactly the same way that Arch linux is loaded. Here we assume that the other distro is on partition [s/h]da3.
title Other Linux
root (hd0,2)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz (add other options here as required)
initrd /boot/initrd.img (if the other kernel uses/needs one)
[edit] Dual booting with other linux distro (Chainloading)
To avoid maintenance nightmare, you might want to chainload the GRUB in the MBR to another bootloader you might have installed in the bootrecord of a partition [(hd0,2) in our example] instead of the MBR. This way the auto-magic stuff of some distro will manage the menu.lst on (hd0,2) (if it is grub) for its own distro and you will boot with all the option needed (like the correct last kernel) without the need to copy/paste some part of that menu.lst into yours.
In our example [1], GRUB is in the MBR and some other bootloader (BL) (be it grub or lilo) is in the Boot Record of (hd0,2).
| | | | % (hd0,2) |
| M | | | B % |
| B | (hd0,0) | (hd0,1) | L % Other |
| R | | | % Distro |
| | | | % |
| ^
| chainloading |
Then, you simply use in your menu.lst:
title Other Linux distro
root (hd0,2)
chainloader +1

[K7N2] Trouble with dual graphics cards
I have a K7N2-DeltaL (Barton 2600+) which I have used for a while with a Radeon 9600 AGP@8x. To use multiple displays I installed a Radeon9200 PCI graphics card.
However, I am having trouble getting it to work. The new card works fine alone, both in this and another computer. It works ok together with another AGP-card (GeForce2) on a Abit K7T with Duron 800.
I have only gotten it to work for a few minutes once, long enough to install drivers etc. Ran it for a while but ended in a BSOD (endless-loop). Otherwise one of the following scenarios occur:
1) with "Init AGP first" the computer boots but fails to initialize the PCI-video, works ok otherwise.
2) with "Init PCI first" the computer fails to boot (stops in "Check RTC" according to D-bracket LEDs, or come to think about it, I think it actually only shows one red and no green, have to check that when I am back at it)
3) with "Init PCI First" the computer POSTs but shuts down and can't be started without removing the power cord
If after 3) I remove the *AGP* card, it still won't boot until I remove the power cable. After this it works fine with just the PCI-card.
I am dual booting with XP Professional and WinME, but as it doesn't even get that far I am failing to see that this might matter.
I am thinking "PSU", but am amazed that it worked in the other computer with the older PSU and not in the new 300W (have not found any Amp-specs).
Any advice?I would have thought that the PCI card used the same power whether it is "init first" or not. Also I would have thought that a power problem would more probably be an unstable computer rather than an unbootable one.
Could a few more AMPs on the PCI-bus really make that much (consistent) difference? -
Is Flash CS4 not compatible with Intel Graphics (laptop)? Really?
Hi!
I'm graphic and animation designer. My company buys CS4 suite
including Photoshop & Flash. And I'm buying a laptop and now
choosing between one having Intel Graphics and another with ATI
Radeon. Intel has some features I need, but after googling, finding
and reading this topic:
http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?14@@.59b6c473/0
till the end, I see it does not fully support Photoshop
CS4!!! I also need Flash CS4 working, so does it support Flash?
So can you still recommend me buying intel integrated-laptop
or should I take an ATI Radeon powered one? I need Flash working
without annoying compatibilites problems. I don't want to buy an
Intel one, if it is not Photoshop- and Flash- compatible....
Thank you!Anne,

It's important you understand what "fully support" means in
this
context. According to Eric Palmer's Dec 4 reply (12:11pm),
Photoshop CS4
does, in fact, run reliably on systems with Intel graphics.
Eric purports
to be an Intel employee, but obviously there's no proof of
that.
Regardless, his assertion jibes with with I hear from
colleagues with Intel
graphics chips.
It's not as if Photoshop suddenly fails if you happen to
choose, say,
red from the color swatches. It's not as if Photoshop fails
to export GIFs
on Intel machines. The only thing you're missing -- and this
is true for me
too, even though I don't have Intel equipment -- is
functionality that
relies on OpenGL. One of these features, for example, lets
you rotate the
canvas while you work on a file. I don't mean rotate the
image itself ... I
mean rotate the actual work space without resampling the
image, just as if
you were rotating the piece of paper on which you were
drawing. Granted,
that sounds like a neat feature (I'd like to experiment with
it, myself!),
but it's not a deal-breaker.
As far as I've seen, the Flash CS4 authoring tool doesn't
rely on any
OpenGL-accelerated features.

Hi, I want to install Archlinux on my thinkpad T60, but there is only WIFI at my room(with WPA), so is it possible to install Arch and set up to get a full GUI desktop environment? The problem is how to connect to internet via WIFI in command line only mode, is it too complicated? Is there a tutorial on this?
Thanks!Olnex wrote:

'The beginners guide and the install guide in the wiki cover this, i believe it also has a section for connecting to an encrypted access point. So to answer your question: yes its possible and no its not too complicated and yes there is a tutorial on this
EDIT: Heres a link to where its at in the wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners'_Guide#Wireless_Quickstart_For_the_Live_Environment just scroll down a little bit
