Install Boot Camp on 3rd drive (3TB)?

I just installed a new 3TB drive in my early 2008 Mac Pro, which is runing ML. I would like to use Boot Camp to install Windows 7 on a 300 GB partition on that new drive and to have it bootable. I would like to retain the rest of the drive for use in OS X. Is this possible?
Also, it says the following in the "...problems creating a partition" section of Boot Camp Installation manual:
If you have a Mac Pro with more than one internal disk and you want to install Boot Camp on a disk that isn’t in the first hard drive bay, remove the drives in the lower- numbered bays. You can reinstall the drives after you install Boot Camp
Given that Boot Camp Assistant is running in OS X & OS X is on the 1st drive, then at what point would I remove the 1st & 2nd drives?

Okay, after rereading a number of messages in this forum, I think that I finally understand what is going on. Namely, if I want to install MS Windows 7 on a drive other than #1, then I would:
Temporarily remove all other drives.
Install MS Windows 7 using the installation media (DVD).
Install Boot Camp drivers that were previously saved on a USB flash drive or DVD.
Shut down Windows.
Reinsert the other drives.
I have an older 300 GB data drive (#2), which I could:
Move the data from this drive to the new 3TB drive.
Install Windows as above.
Is this correct?

Yes as I said before. If your model Mac came with Snow Leopard and you are now running Mt Lion and have Windows installed in a Boot Camp Partition all you have to do is make the Mt Lion partition smaller, take the free space and make it another Mac partition and you should be able to install Snow Leopard into that partition.

On Drive bay 2 and 3 I have setup as a RAID which has OSX Installed. I want to install Boot Camp onto the Drive in bay 1. When I run the Boot Camp Assistant, it tells me I can't partition an external drive. What am I doing wrong?

You should always have an alternate boot drive that is not on a RAID. Upgrade to 10.5.2 if you have not already. You can use Disk Utility and partition the whole drive for Windows as Master Boot Record and FAT or setup partitions. You could also use the default GUID partition scheme and have FAT and HFS+, your choice.
If you plan to install Vista, you will have to take a FAT partition, delete it from Vista, and create a partition (NTFS) to install.

Note: At this time BootCamp doesn't support 3TB drives - this is due to a memory allocation issue with Windows. Check out this article on a/an (unreliable) work around. I say unreliable because some people are reporting success and others failure. At this time if you really need Windows it probably would be better to use virtualization software like Parallels, VMWare, or VirtualBox.

I would suggest trying a VM first, and I would suggest using VirtualBox (as it is free), it will work but with a slight performance hit. If the hit is more than you can stand go the Boot Camp route.

Go into your system preferences and click the startup disk icon then select your Mac HD.

Trying to plan my upgrade to the new Mac Pros and I'm wondering whether it's possible to install Boot Camp on a logical drive located on a Promise Pegasus2 Thunderbolt enclosure? Ideally I'd be setting up a series of logical drives on a Pegasus2 (2 to duplicate existing drives in my current Mac Pro, 1 for Time Machine, and 1 for Boot Camp) but I can't seem to find out whether Boot Camp partitions are supported...

I too would like to install a bootcamp partition on an SD card so that I will not loose a huge chuck of my internal drive to Windows, a system I need very rarely (this is important for all users of SSHDs, where internal storage space is precious).
If it is not possible to create a bootcamp partition on an external SD card, how about installing Lion first on that SD card, booting from the SD card, and then creating the bootcamp partition on that card. I would think that Lion's disk utility would consider the SD card as the internal disk, and so should make the partition and allow the installation. Large fast SD cards are not cheap, but I would think that this would be an option for those of us with limited internal storage space.
Has anybody tried this option?

No. Windows cannot boot from nor be installed on an external drive. That said, in the Windows world there are ways to put a bootable Windows installer on a flash drive. But you will have to find those on your own.

Installing boot camp on a second drive

Hi All,
First let me apologize for this long-winded post and also for my lack of basic knowledge when it comes to mac computer skills.
I would like to install windows 7 on a brand new 500gb drive in a brand new mac pro.
I was reading through the installation & setup up guide for boot camp and was stonewalled on page 6 it says;
“If your computer has more than one internal disk and you want to install Boot Camp on a disk that isn’t in the first hard drive bay, remove the drives in the lower numbered bays. You can reinstall the drives after you install Boot Camp.”
Ok that makes sense but if I remove the first drive how do I install boot camp since the first drive contains boot camp on it?
The next question I have is; Can I make the whole 500gb drive one partition that will have boot camp, windows 7 and all the windows files on it or does it have to have just boot camp and windows 7?

Shutdown - pull OS X drive(s) - continue with install.
You'll have to change to NTFS when you get to where to install.
At that point you can even format or partition.
As for the Assistant, well, some install Windows 7 on a drive without it (that can't be done with XP) and just leave one drive and boot from Win 7 DVD.

There IS NO "boot camp." The assistant modified the partition table to include a standard MBR for booting Windows. And that would be on the #2 500GB.
Until you install the Apple setup.exe drivers and services after Windows is installed from your OS X DVD, there is nothing in or on Windows that is faintly about boot camp. Unfortunate term. It also gets to become a control panel in Windows to change the default startup OS (why not call it Apple OS Switcher / Apple Startup Disk).
There will be AppleTimeServices and AppleOSSwitcher services along with HAL and device drivers to enable them in Device Manager.
As for lowered numbered and first drive bay, they must think Mac Pro owners are locked into and only boot from drive bay #1. and that Assistant is a very limited not very smart partitioning tool is true.
So run Assistant but instead of restarting with the DVD and install, just shutdown. Pull all the other drives but 500GB. Then boot off the DVD.

I am trying to install the boot camp driver on my windows 7, so I put the Mac OSX Snow Leopard into the driver but nothing comes up so I try to open the DVD RW Driver (D:) with the cd on and it says insert a disc and my Mac OSX Snow Leopard cd is removed.

Does anyone know what the partitions look like after installing boot camp on a 3T fusion drive

I installed a boot camp partition on a 3T fusion drive. Running disk utility afterward it looks like this.
Is this what it should look like? I understand about the need for bootcamp to create 2 physical drives in core storage in order to install boot camp on a 3T fusion drive but should I see both drives after it is done?

Newbie question: Running Parallels from Boot Camp on separate drive

All: I'm new to the Mac world, so bear with me. I'm awaiting arrival of a Mac Pro that has two separate 250GB drives. I plan on running Parallels because there are certain Windows apps that I need to access periodically--but not enough to open up Boot Camp separately. Someone suggested the following, but I need help in figuring out how this works:

So in other words, if I already have two drives, I can have my main drive running normal Mac apps, and then if I need to run Windows, I install Parallels and all my Windows apps, along with Boot Camp and Windows XP, on the second drive and use it from there whenever I need to run Windows??

I don't think BootCamp allows an installation on another drive, but Parallels and other software will.
You might repost this in the BootCamp forum where there are many more users running Winders under all kinds of 3rd party software.
