Install Disc blank

Has anyone encountered their Aperure Installl disc becoming unreadable?
The disc appears to be completely erased (if thats possible?)
I have checked it on a PC and there appeasr to be absolutely not data atall on the disc.
When I try to run it on my MAC it simply ejects after about a minute.
Any help appreciated

I have never seen that happen, but CDs and DVDs do not last forever.
However, if you need to reinstall the retail version of Aperture, you can download the installer for the Trial version and unlock t with your registration key:
Download from here:
Aperture 3.1 Trial
Now run the Aperture trial installer on your mac and upgrade immediately (using Software Update from the menu). Then launch Aperture and unlock it with the serial number.

  • Bootcamp not recognizing legit Vista install disc (says it's a blank disc).

Through school, I received a copy of Windows Vista Business. I had it installed on bootcamp for over 2 years.Recently, my hard drive crashed. I replaced the hard drive, reinstalled Snow Leopard, and then attempted to reinstall Vista through bootcamp. I have created the partition on the hard drive. When it gets to the point that I need to insert the Vista installation disc, I insert it, and it tells me the disc is blank. It is an official copy from Microsoft, and has only be in a computer once before. There are no scratches on the disc. I try to open the disc in finder, and it still shows as blank. I decided to try upgrading to Lion, to see if it would help, but it considers the disc blank just the same. I do not have the money to buy another full version of the Windows OS, but desperately need it for school. Please advise!

  • HELP! My iMac wont respond to install disc or any commands

I know I'm taking a trip in the "Way back" machine. But I'm pretty resourseful and haven't been able to find my problem. Either I need a Mac super genius or it’s something stupid simple that I’m overlooking.
    Specs:
    iMac G4 Serial# XXXXXXXX Sep. 2003 – July 2004
    1.25GHZ/ 256MB/ 80GB 17” Screen
    PowerPC 7445
History: I bought this used with the computer’s monitor backlight out. I could still barely see the sign-in page when I looked at a certain angle, so that was an indicator to me that the OS was working. So I replaced the monitor. At the same time because of owner exchange I had to replace the hard drive with a fully wiped blank one (Deskstar ATA/IDE). I purchased an install disc set 10.4.8, which according to Apple this computer is compatible with 10.2.3 thru10.5.8.
Problem: After reassembly, the replacement monitor works fine. But the system won’t respond to anything. All I get is the gray screen with the apple smiley face folder that alternates with a question mark. It won’t respond to the install disc, or any commands for that matter. Of course I double, triple, and quadruple checked my connections from reassmebling. Here’s what I’ve attempted, all ending up with the same screen display.
    During power-up
C (…of     course to boot from the install disc. It just ejects the disc after about     30 seconds)
    CMD-OPT-SHIFT-DEL
D (wont     respond to hardware test)
CMD-S     (won’t go into single user mode. It just goes to the same gray screen)
OPT (this     is the only way I get a different screen. It shows the recycle page symbol     and continue symbol. It will recycle the OPT process to stay on this     screen, but it won’t continue if I press that selection – nothing happens
    I’ve reset the PRAM
I’ve tried different keyboards (all Apple)
I’ve tried plugging the keyboard into different USB slots
I’ve replaced the Hard Drive with yet another just in case. I’ve tried alternate jumper settings on the hard drive. The original wasset to “Cable”, so I set it to that. But I also tried “Master” jumper settings– no change in results. I can’t say for certain that I hear the DVD/CD drive spin up. But I figure even if I had a bad install disc or bad optical drive, I should still be able to get to the black screen single user mode, yes?  So I’m at my wits end. Can any of you Mac geniuses out there please help me? Thanks
    <edited by Host>

Install discs are specific to the machine they came with.  You cannot use them on any other machine, so the ones you bought are useless.  Buy a retail black faced copy of either Tiger or Leopard and you should be able to boot your machine, you need to format the drive as Mac OS extended (Journaled) when you first boot from the new retail disc.
I have also asked that your serial number be removed, it's not a good idea to post it.

drive, on a Dell optical drive, and all of them were opened well, although Dell
optical drive did not have a lightscribe feature at all., nor third party disc

However, the problem is still with opening the discs LIGHT-SCRIBE
    Thus, my questions are:
How to determine if the drive is corrupted and needs to be replaced with
    another one.
I think there something needed to be done on the BIOS Of my HP laptop[[[A similar problems happened on my Desktop computer's optical drive which is as follows (ALL discs are opened as empty by Optical Drive of My Desktop Computer) ---while my optical drive of my desktop was connected to the primary slave IDE, and the HDD was connected to the primary master IDE, the optical drive and hard disk are functioning well. However, I remember that while burning an image with Nero essential V: 5, something went wrong, and then the Optical Drive of My Desktop Computer (HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22NP20) became NOT recognised/Installed on BIOS, although it was still shown on the device manager as a recognised device. Also, it was listed on my computer, however, when entering a disc(blank or with data) into the drive, I found it was not recognised, and it opened empty(no files at it), although it contains data. Thus, I decided to boot to BIOS, and clicked on 'Autodetection for IDE', then I found that only HDD was still shown as installed on BIOS. However, the optical drive was not. Th I tried clicking on it on BIOS and then clicking on 'enter' to try to let the device be re-recognized. However, that made no difference. I had to take part my computer ,and then reconnected the optical drive onto the secondary slave IDE , and let HDD connected to the same primary master IDE. Then, I found that the problem solved and all discs were read normally. Aslo, optical drive became installed on BIOS

I understand that you are having an issue with your battery and the lightscribe drive. You would also like to know about DL(Dual Layer) support.
Here is a link to  Troubleshooting the notebook battery to assist with the battery concern.
You asked what dual layer support is , here is a definition from webopedia for the explanation.
    What is dual layer support
As you stated in your post your system supports  reading
The DL refers to dual layer, it does not list a CD DL.  What type of disk are you using?
From your post I noticed it does read the title of the disk but is unable to read the file.
Did you use any form of compression software  when writing the files?
Would you try inserting a  supported blank disk and writing to it.  If you can do this and read the disk after your drive is functioning.
The only other way to check would be to remove and reinstall it  into another computer to test if it works there.
Yes there is a bios update listed on the driver page for your notebook.

Updating the bios does have a potential to cause damage, for this reason I suggest contacting HP support for assistance.

    Thanks a lot,
I wish that Paul_Tikkanen could have participated in solving this issue since I know he has insight in such problems.
Could you please be a little bit patient with me and go through all my points below and answer me::
IF you had  had a close look at my screen shots before, you would have seeing I have classified the disc haveing and not having the problem  into three categories each of which has its screen shots under it.
Blank Or Used(containg data) CD/ DVD ±R/RW lightscirbe is unable to be  read by optical drive
Not Blank(containing data) CD/ DVD ±R/RW NON -Lightscirbe disc opens normal
    Blank CD/ DVD ±R/RW NON-lightscirbe opens normal(Opens like a USB FlashDrive or With a CD,DVD)::
First The kind of discs I have been used to using, and seeing in the market are only:
    CD-R, C-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW.
    However, I never ever used or saw 'CD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-ROM CD-R DL, CD+R DL, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL, CD-RW DL, CD+RW DL, DVD-RW DL, DVD+RW DL.
Thus, Could you please be a little more detailed about each of the above disc types?
Second: I don't know if I can see 'DVD+R DL' written on the cover of DVD like what I am accustomed to see 'DVD-R'?
Third: What difference is there between 'DVD-RW', and 'DVD-RW DL', and 'DVD-R' and 'DVD-R DL'?

NOTE, those discs are for HP Factory Recovery Discs.I have created those Discs via HP Recovery Manager.  After creating them, I have labelled them with lightscribe software. ALL LightScribe are not read well and are unknown. Thus, my answer for your question is No, I don't use compression software unless if the program 'HP Recovery Manager' used a compression built-in tool while creating those discs'
Moreover, I have even restored my laptop from the HP factory Recovery discs which means everything must have been OK

Have you seen my screen shots well?
The key of my problem as to unable to reading LightScribe is the answer of this question of mine: Why do I see 'RAW' or 'unknown' as a file system for disc inserted whenever I insert a ligthSribe disc into drive?
All Blank Or containing data CD/ DVD ±R/RW lightscirbe are unable to be  read by optical drive. When clicking on drive 'duble-click', I found it opens  like a USB FlashDrive or With a CD,DVD player, however, 'with CD/DVD Player' is grayed out) When I chose 'like a USB FlashDrive, I found there was no disc inserted, although it was.
If you mean other discs not LightScribe, then I would be saying YES. And they all worked well, except the lightscribe(Blank, or containing data) were not read well at all.(all are unknown).

You mean I need to remove the optical drive and install on another laptop brand. If so, It would be compatible with any laptop brand?
NOTE: the reason around this problem is not lightscribe discs(I think) since any optical drive without having a lightscribe feature can read lightscribe discs. For instance the Dell laptop(Windows 7) could read all lightscribe disc or non lightscribe discs, even although it doesn't have any lightscribe feature, nor a disc recording software, except the Windows built-in default  tools. Dell optical drive, although not having a lightscribe feature, read all discs no matter the disc type is. Thus, In my HP optical drive having a lightscribe feature, I have decided to get rid of (lightscribe feature by removing the lightscribe system software, and all Cyber DVD-Suite). However, the problem is still with reading lightscribe discs.

    Updating the BIOS
First:: I have updated my BIOS from F.05 into F.1B by using HP Notebook System BIOS Update (Intel Processors) (sp55068) F.1B hoping to get rid of this problem, but that made no difference at all.
    NOTE
Other suggested that I insert an empty rewritable CD and try running the following command: format e: /fs:UDF
I did, but it didn't help.
Other suggested to download the latest version LightSribe system software, but I would be saying how to do that as long as HP would be phasing out HP LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling technology. HP will gradually transition products to comparable optical disc drives without LightScribe technology.
Second:: I've also been searching in HP forums, but always they said nonsense comments which I don't put up with. Take this one for example,
I'd be happy to do all I can to help with your lightscribe. Please note:Beginning May 2011 and throughout the year, HP will be phasing out HP LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling technology. HP will gradually transition products to comparable optical disc drives without LightScribe technology. While this transition may affect other HP products, this document is specific to HP notebooks.- Source

NOTE:Hewlett-Packard's LightScribe website is no longer active. LightScribe software and disc utilities
may be found on a number of public websites. Search the Internet for LightScribeto find these pages.
This blurb and much more information can be found in the following document; Creating Disc Labels with LightScribe
    The compelet discussion is here.
Finally I would be saying that LightScribe website is no longer available(discontinued). As HP said. IF HP customer care couldn't help their customers, I think it would be better to completely discontinue selling HP products.

I tried running the below command line to fix potential disk issue 'Chkdsk/r /f'
I cleaned the drive, discs, and so on.
I have uninstalled the all third-party data recording software.
I have uninstalled the Cyber DVD suite, lightscribe system software
which came pre-installed with my HP pavilion Notebook.
I have recovered my system from the HP Factory Recovery discs.
I have tried opening all those LightScibe discs not opening on my HP optical drive, on a Dell optical drive, and all of them were opened well, although Dell optical drive did not have a lightscribe feature at all., nor  third party disc recording software.
However, the problem is still with opening the discs LIGHT-SCRIBE.
    Thus, my questions are:
How to determine if the drive is corrupted and needs to be replaced with another one.
I think there something needed to be done on the BIOS Of my HP laptop[[[A similar problems happened on my Desktop computer's optical drive which is as follows (ALL discs are opened as empty by Optical Drive of My Desktop Computer) ---while
my optical drive of my desktop was connected to the
primary slave IDE, and the HDD was connected to the primary master IDE, the optical drive and hard disk are functioning well. However, I remember that while burning an image with Nero essential V: 5, something went wrong, and
then the Optical Drive of My Desktop Computer (HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22NP20) became NOTrecognised/Installed on
BIOS, although it was still shown on the device manager as a recognised device. Also, it was listed on my computer, however, when entering a disc(blank or with data) into the drive, I found it was not recognised, and it opened empty(no files
at it), although it contains data. Thus, I decided to boot to BIOS, and clicked on 'Autodetection for IDE', then I found that only HDD was still shown as installed on BIOS.  However, the optical drive was not. Th I tried clicking on it on BIOS and then
clicking on 'enter' to try to let the device be re-recognized. However, that
made no difference. I had to take part my computer ,and then reconnected the optical drive onto thesecondary slave IDE , and let HDD connected to the same
primary master IDE. Then, I found that the problem solved and all discs were read normally. Aslo, optical drive became installed on BIOS.
What is meant with with double Layer Support.
    How much does it cost?

This is probably related to the faulty hardware or the application ( LightScribe

Could you please really concentrate with me, and really reply to me to finish this problem pending.
If you had had a look again at my first post, you would have seen that I said that I have done some things, among of which is: I have uninstalled the Cyber DVD suite, lightscribe system software
which came pre-installed with my HP pavilion Notebook.
Yes, you're right the two threads below are concerned about one issue.

However, this thread contains more precise details and screen shots about the problem. I was not able to understand whether all lightscribs were not unable to be read or not. However, I now recognized that, and I recognized that only all LightScribe(empty
or used) discs are unable to be read. furthermore, that other thread got far too longer to be followed.
Moreover, I would like you to take some time out to answer my problem about Lighstscribe discs since I am going to purchase 'A battery, Cooling Fan' From the HP agent in Yemen, which is far away from me about 1000 Km. Thus, If my optical disc drive was corrupted
as well, then I would be requesting the 'optical disc  drive' as well from the HP along with 'Battery, Cooling Fan' .

  • Can't Boot From Install Disc 1 ?

Holding down "C" at Start Up isn't working.
Most of the time I can't get Preferences > Start-Up to even "see" my Disc 1.
When I can get it to show up in Start-Up, and Select it, and Lock it ... it Still Won't Start Up from the Install Disc 1 ... and in fact usually ejects the disc.
Sometimes when I re-push in the disc, I get the message that a Blank Disc has been detected, "what do you want to do with it."
But, it shows up in Disc Utility, and when I run Verify Disc, it all looks good?!
The Disc has Mac OS version 10.4.8 on it. I'm running 10.5.7. I'm all up to date with my software.
Yesterday I ran the latest version of Disc Warrior. When I run TechTools 4.0 it seems to get stuck running Files. When I run Repair Permissions from Disc Utilities, it shows a fairly massive amount of issues. Running it over and over again doesn't seem to make any difference.
I WANT to run my Install Disc so I can run Repair Disc from Disc Utility ... because I'm having a number of issues ... and I seem to get the spinning rainbow a lot.
    SUGGESTIONS ?! ... thanks ...

Disk Utility that can repair a 10.5.7 permissions is only found on the Leopard installer disc. Tiger can't repair Leopard when it comes to permissions, and may also have difficulty with the directory.
Secondly, if your MacBook Pro was purchased after October 26, 2007, it can't boot from any Tiger disc.
If your MacBook Pro was purchased prior, you can use the disk, but you'll want to follow these directions for hardware diagnostics:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303081
Only if your MacBook Pro has Tiger installed, should you use Tiger for the directory or permissions*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
Macs can only boot from the operating system that shipped with them, and newer retail operating systems. This means:
    1. pre-October 1st, 2007 MacBook Pros can boot off:
    - - the discs that shipped with them
    - - retail 10.5 discs which look like * that do not say Upgrade, DropIn, or OEM.
    2. October 1st through October 25, 2007 can do #1, and also use Upgrade and DropIn discs. Those disks were offered as a limited time mail order Up to date program, some were dropped in the box that came with them.
    3. October 26th through November 14, 2007 can boot off the discs that came with them, and retail 10.5.1, 10.5.4, and 10.5.6 discs that do not say Upgrade, DropIn, or OEM, and have a label like the image above.
    4. November 15, 2007 through June 29, 2008 can boot off the discs that came with them, and the retail 10.5.4, and 10.5.6 discs that do not say Upgrade, DropIn, or OEM, and have a label like the image above.
    5. June 30, 2008 through December 14, 2008 can boot off the discs that came with them, and the retail 10.5.6 discs that do not say Upgrade, DropIn, or OEM, and have a label like the image above.
    6. December 15, 2008 and later MacBook Pros can only boot off the discs that came with them.
Presumably when Snow Leopard comes out in September, all of the above will be able to use Snow Leopard because of the specs on http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html

  • Will Not Boot from Install Disc  & 4SNS/1/40000000: TG0D - Thermal Sensor?

*Will Not Boot from Install Disc*
I used the "option key" approach with the gray start up disk. At first it ejected the start up disk. Then I nudged the disk back in the machine and it showed on the screen as an option. I clicked on the start up disk image and it finally loaded.
But, it won't accept the start up disk when holding down the "C" key at restart.
    *4SNS/1/40000000: TG0D*
I did an Apple Hardware Test and received the following diagnostic:
    Version: 3A121
    Test Suite: Extended Test
    Loop Count: 2
    Result: Failed
    Failure code: 4SNS/1/40000000: TG0D
    *Thermal Sensor*
A search for the failure code 4SNS/1/40000000: TG0D brought up an Apple Discussion topic entry stating: That error code indicates a problem with a thermal sensor. It could be not working or possibly not connected. You will need to take it to Apple for repair.
Would a thermal sensor have anything to do with it not starting up when holding down the "C" key at restart? What are thermal sensor problem symptoms?
    *User File Folder Opened Up*
The machine also starts up with my user file folder opened up rather than with a blank screen as it normally should
I completed a DiskWarrior rebuild on the disk and verify disk shows it is fine.
Any suggestions on what to do next with these issues?

The answer was in your post: "You will need to take it to Apple for repair."

  • Install disc won't re-install Leopard on my Macbook

So, I recently upgraded my Hard Drive in my Macbook. After I upgraded, I thought it would be cool to have Windows XP on my Mac also. So I partition 20 gb of my Hard Drive off for XP. I ran boot camp to install XP and I kept getting an error. This left me with an empty partition of 20 gb on my Hard Drive. I read many posts on here and I decided that the best thing to do was to re-install Leopard completely and start over, fresh and clean. Well, I put my Leopard install disc into my dvd drive, and when the install starts up, I get an error message that says, "Mac OS X can not be installed on this drive." Also, the install disc will not eject, even before the install starts. My hard drive is completely blank right now, and I have no idea why my install disc won't work. What should I do?

Open Disk Utility again (from the installer DVD), click on the drive's name as described in the previous post, & click the blue "i" button to get the disk's info. Copy that to a reply in this thread so we can see it. Or just note the "Partition Map Scheme" info, which should say "GUID Partition Table."
If not, you did not succeed in repartitioning it, perhaps because you did not click the "Apply" button or something.
If so, make sure you are using the installer disk that came with the MacBook & not some other model-specific installer disk.
BTW, you can never eject the DVD if you have started up the MacBook from it, so that much is normal behavior. To eject the DVD, you must restart from some other boot volume.

  • I'm having problems installing disc 3 of Photoshop Elements 10

I purchased Photoshop Elements 10 from a Staples store this week.  My system meets the minimum requirements.  The first 2 discs installed (although with some difficulty for disc 1) but I can't get disc 3 to install. My computer won't recognize it as an install disc.  It will either say it's a blank CD (not DVD) and ask what I want to do with it, or it offers options for downloading photos from the disc.  This happened with disc 1 also, but after removing and reinserting the disc a few times it finally recognized it and I was able to install.  Any suggestions of what the problem is and/or how to fix it?  I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium.

because the third disk is for the Mac OS

  • HD crash and can't boot form install disc. . .

Hi there, this is the first Mac I've owned and it's a little under a year old. It's a Macbook Pro with an Intel Core Duo and OS X 10.4 Tiger. Last night my computer froze attempting to open iTunes and I restarted it by holding down the power button. Unfortunately every time I try to boot the computer I get the startup noise and a blank gray screen. I tried to reboot it several times last night before looking up potential fixes on another computer. I tried resetting the PRAM and was rewarded with a new screen: A blank gray screen with a flashing folder and question mark icon. After researching this I found it's indicative of a hard drive problem that can potentially be rectified with the disc utilities program on the install disc. However whenever I try to boot from the OS X install disc, by holding down "C" during a restart, nothing happens. Just the blank gray screen. The CD sounds like it's going to spin up but then abruptly stops. Thus I cannot run either disc utilities or the hardware diagnostic test. I have tried using both Install disc 1 and 2 with no success. The only key based startup commands I can get to work are resetting the PRAM and ejecting discs. Also when I start the computer the left front corner(?) makes a rhythmic "tic tic tic pause" noise for a couple of seconds. I suspect this is the hard drive attempting to spin up but am not sure. I am afraid that the HD is completely buggered beyond all repair but I would like to try either the disc utilities or the hardware test before I take it in for repairs. However if someone knows it's gone, I'll take it in right away.

If you are still in the one year warranty period, the repairs will be covered. You might want to consider getting 3 year Applecare before the one year warranty is up too. Especially on a Mac that has problems during its first year. 3 year Applecare is expensive, but generally less than almost any repair.
    Good luck!

  • I installed a blank cd to burn which I have done before but nothing is happening and I can not eject the cd

I installed a blank cd to burn a playlist which I have done many times but nothing is happening and I can not eject the cd and when I try to close ITunes I get a message saying a cd is burning but nothing is happening and I can not do anything in ITunes

I have this tip in my notes to eject a stuck disc, but not even sure if I have used it before -
Restart computer while holding "option" key, when hard drive icon appears, release "option" and hold "eject" key.
    Hope it works!

  • Original install disc won't work!

Hey all, I am trying to take my eMac back down to OSX 10.2, which is the original OSX that it came with when I bought it. It had tiger on it and I can not get the original install disc to boot when I try and do a restart while pressing "C". On startup, it goes to the screen that says "You computer needs to be restarted, press your on button for several seconds". So, I just used DBAN to completely wipe the HD, hoping that would help it, since maybe it was having trouble since tiger was still on there. The HD is now completely wiped blank and the disc still won't mount. I put in my Leopard disc just to see if that would work and it booted right up and was ready to start installing. Why won't the original disc work? The disc looks brand new, there are no scratches or anything like that on it. Any ideas? Thanks for any input!

I'd need to check notes i don't have with me at the moment, but if I recall correctly, part of the update from 10.2 to 10.4 on an eMac involved a firmware update, which could be why you can't boot to the 10.2 disc anymore.
Most OS 9 programs run fine under OS X 10.4 using Classic. You could try reinstalling 10.4, then put OS 9 on from your original 10.2 set of discs; the exact steps will depend on just which version of the discs you actually got. See e.g. OS X: How to Perform Mac OS 9 Clean Install and Mac OS X 10.2, 10.3: How to perform Mac OS 9 clean installation with Restore CDs

  • Can't boot off System Install Disc

I'm trying to boot off what I think is my original system install disc to run disc utility. When I do the dvd spins up for a minute, stops and the computer only displays a blank grey screen. The System Install disc is version 10.5. The computer, an intel i7 iMac, is running system 10.6.6. I also tried booting off the Snow Leopard install disc but had the same problem.
I'm trying to run disc utility off the install disc because I've been having problems with the machine, ran disc utility of the HD, and got the "This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X Install disc0, and then use Disc Utility to repair this disc"

Check the disc to make sure they are not dirty. Either disc will do the job, but the 10.6 is better, of course.
Try this: Boot the iMac normally and insert the disc. When it mounts, open the disc image and start the installer. It will ask you to restart. When it restarts you will be prompted to select a language. In the next window you can cancel the installer and open the disc utility to do your repairs.

  • How does the "Please Install Disc 2" message work?

I've been puttering around with an old Titanium PB G4 with a busted screen, using an external monitor to bring it up to 10.4 from 10.3.9.
I inadvertently started the install with a 10.4 CD instead of my 10.4 DVD. Problem is, I don't have the second 10.4 CD, so I had to abort the install (using a hard power reset) and reinstall with the DVD.
The DVD install went OK, but now on reboot I still get the "Please install Disc 2" message, and can't proceed. I can boot into OS9 and mess with the installed OSX files, but I can't seem to find out where that message originates from.
This is more from curiosity than just trying to fix it (I could always reformat and reinstall). My question is:
What file or mechanism causes the "Please Install Disc 2" to come up on the screen? Where is it located? Or is it something in PRAM? Just curious...
    Thanks

One way would have been to be certain the first partial installation
had been wiped from the computer's hard disk drive. Even though
you seem to have gotten a second installation, whatever was hung
up in the first one is probably still on the computer's hard disk drive.
Disk Utility, on the installer disc's initial menu options, can be used
to reformat; it also can be used to secure overwrite zeros beforehand
so the hard disk drive has nothing other than the formatting. This is
as good as it gets for a blank-slate before a new installation.
There may be a way to see if a second full installation exists on the
hard disk drive, by holding down the Option key on boot and see if
you get the icon representation of more than one boot OSX system.
If so, try one of them and restart. Since you have two 10.4 systems
there, telling them apart may be by trial & error. If you can find the
correct one, it may be possible to remove the other one. It may be
that the last install by DVD won't work because its on the same drive
partition as the earlier failed OS installation.
If you tried an upgrade & install or an archive & install, the old 10.3.9
system may have the problem contained within it. Some of the OS X
system parts can be totally damaged by accessing (moving location)
of its bits; some of those are invisible while booted in OS X, not in 9.
That makes it possible to remove OS X, in a way, (and any older files)
while leaving OS 9.x intact. Any erasure of the HDD, and you will
have to install OS9 Drivers in the process of first new OS install if 9
is expected to boot the computer again. Tiger may provide drivers,
    if not, a reinstall of OS9.2 should. Otherwise OS9 becomes a non-boot
version called Classic, accessed under OS X. If you have the original
software installation disc set, that is where OS9/Classic would probably
be installed from. Not all OS9 system discs work in Macs that shipped
with a vintage dual-boot hardware. A copy of that OS9 could be re-used.
If OS9 is desired; otherwise it may not exist in the computer later on.
    Good luck & happy computing!

I have tried to install Windows 8.1 64 on my new Mac Book Pro from a full install disc. When I get the the choice of partitions to install Windows 8.1 on the Windows installer says that the Bootcamp partition is not valid.
Has anyone encountered the same issue?

BCA creates the partition as FAT, which the installer needs to format.
