Install Disc won't see main hard drive

I'm trying to upgrade from 10.4.11 to 10.5. When I'm booted up from the install disc, my main hard drive doesn't show up as an option to install onto. My secondary internal hard drive shows up, as well as my firewire drive. What's the deal? Thanks-Karen

Try going into Disk Utility and see if you disk pops up. If not restart your mac and hold the "c" key. If that does not work go to the Apple Store.

  • 10.4 Install disk won't see new hard drive

My 10.5.6 drive is dying so I replaced it with a brand new drive. I bought my computer just after the 10.5.0 upgrade, so it came with two 10.4 disks and a 10.5 upgrade disk.
When I insert 10.4 disk 1 and boot, I get to the point where I am asked to select a drive. Nothing is showing. My hard drive is not recognized.
There is only one setup path. There is no way to use Utility or any other program. There are no tabs, options or anything else but this setup path. OsX 10.4 Disk 2 is not recognized. The OSX 10.5 disk is not recognized.
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the Erase tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled... after completion hopefully you'll be able to install.

  • Follow up to HD crash - Install disk can't see new Hard Drive !!!

I may have a bigger problem on my hands.
I rebooted with my original install disk of OS X and when it gets to the "choose location" window, it does not see the new hard drive......????
I'm thinking about re-checking connections and/or possibly pull the hard drive out and do an external connection just to verify that it spins.
Not sure how to proceed and/or what to check ?? Suggestions ???

Make sure you chose the right format, and as far as partitioning in concerned, you have to select at least one partition, which will be the entire drive.

  • Migration Assistant won't see external hard drive

I have just done a clean install of Leopard onto my MacBook Pro, previously running Tiger. Now, I want to migrate my old user and programs from a backed up volume on an external firewire hard drive. The problem is that Migration Assistant won't recognize my external hard drive.
I have no other problem mounting or reading the external hard drive from leopard.
Could the problem be that the external drive has the Apple partition map instead of GUID as reported here? http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1329665
Any suggestion, solutions or work arounds are gratefully appreciated.

That isn't a valid link to your picture (it's a link to the file on your computer). You would need to post it to a serve (and remove the spaces in the name) and post that link here.
However it would appear that your short name is 'dalechristiansen' so presumably you originally created a user with that short name and your full name as.. the full name (unless it was just 'Dale'. Whatever you did before when you created your account is what you should do now. Then you can copy the equivalent folder's contents. (You might have problems replacing some of the root level folders, in which case you shuld copy their contents into the equivalent folders).

  • Macbook won't see internal hard drive sometimes

I've got a core duo macbook that's been giving me trouble for awhile. The original hard drive crashed and I replaced it, then the new hard drive crashed and I had some issues with kernel panics, etc. I can boot off my firewire drive and it seems to work fine, but I put in a 3rd hard drive today to give it another chance, and it won't mount when I boot from the installer disk. I booted from the external hard drive, and initially the internal hard drive did not mount. The second time I opened Disk Utility, the hard drive was there, so I tried to format it, but I get the pinwheel and nothing happens. I'm running OS 10.5 with 2GB of ram. I'm thinking it's a logic board issue as I was getting kernel panics at one time, but haven't seen any lately. Any help?

When a hard drive fails to appear in Disk Utility that usually means the drive has failed. I really don't understand the purpose of the rest of your post. I don't even know what the question is, but I'm guessing you want to know if the drive should be replaced. The answer would be, "Yes."

  • EMac won't see external hard drive.

I have a 1.42 GHz eMac and I have all of my iTunes stuff on an external hard drive via FireWire. I went to turn the hard drive on, which I've done for the past 4 months, and it came on but wouldn't show up on my eMac. I went to disk utility, but it froze and I had to force quit it. I tried connecting it via USB, and it works fine on other computers, any ideas on how to make it work again? I've unplugged the system for 4 hours and reset the PRAM. Nothing seems to be working...

  • Install disc won't see harddrive

Anyone who saw my last few points knows that my wonderful internal harddrive failed and i was forced to replace it. Just installed new harddrive (yes, correctly) and when i go to install software it doesn't see my harddrive. disk utility sees it, but it can't select it for repair. please help!

What partition type did you use? It needs to be "Apple partition" for the PPC computers and GUID for Intels. I should probably have mentioned that before...sorry. But at least you are getting closer since the drive is recognized. What you need to do is delete the partition and make a new one being sure to use "Apple Partition" and format it as an OSX Extended (Journaled) partition. Then the installer should run.

  • Pleases help. Final cut won't see my Hard Drive Camcorder anymore!

I have a Cannon HG10 that I used to import all the time to final cut. Now it will not see my camcorder. I hooked it up to iMovie '08 and it detects it just fine. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong
    Thank you

    Caleb,
what have you done to troubleshoot this?
Try closing FCP (Do you have FCP 6.0.2 and you are connecting through USB?) and/or reboot. I unserstand some of this consumer cameras are quite sensitive to the order of steps and connections to follow prior transfer.

  • Installing OS X on a NEW hard drive

I just installed a new hard drive on the macbook pro. however, when i run the installation disk it never actually installes os x instead it trys to install the applications, but cant find the drive. How do I install OS X on a new hard drive? Thanks.

    Hello,
The first thing you need to do is partition and format the drive.
From the OS X installation screen, go up to the menus at the top, and locate Disk Utility.
    Launch Disk Utility.
Now, select your hard drive on the left.
Then, click on the Partitions Tab.
Now, choose the single partition option (unless you want to divide the drive for some reason). Then, give it a name.
Choose the format "Mac OS X Extended (Journaled).
Now, click on the button to partition the drive.
When it's done, exit Disk Utility.
Now, proceed with the installation. If it still won't see the hard drive, then re-start from the installation disk again and try it again. It should see the hard drive now and permit you to install on it.
    I hope this helps.

  • How do I migrate firefox settings from a 4.0 FF install on my old main drive, now connected as an external drive, to my new main hard drive's 4.0 FF installation?

My old computer's motherboard cooked, but the hard drive was undamaged. I removed it, and converted it to an external hard drive using cables, and now want to migrate the bookmarks, passwords, and settings to my new computer's main hard drive installation of Firefox.

See [[Managing Profiles]] which explains how to recover data from your profile on the old drive.

You cannot. From a legal standpoint, the license agreement for OS X mandates that you run OS X only on Apple hardware. HP is not (yet) owned by Apple.
From a technical standpoint, your HP laptop doesn't use EFI, but rather an early predecessor called a BIOS. Apple is the only vendor of consumer computer hardware that uses EFI; other vendors reserve EFI for use in servers.
Secondly, Apple's operating systems support a rather limited number of configurations of video hardware and mainboard chipsets directly since they need only support those systems that they manufacture. You cannot use Windows software or drivers on OS X, so prior to installation, you would need to write your own hardware drivers for your laptop, create an OS X drive image on a Mac, and then modify that image with your drivers before putting it in the HP.
It will be simpler (and legal), to simply purchase a used Mac. Apple's online store has refurbished MacBook Airs starting at $850 and Mac Minis for $700. If you go to e-bay or craigslist, you'll find used Macs for considerably less.

You don't need to have Lightroom 3 and 4 installed on your computer to install Lightroom 5.  Just install Lightroom 5 and input your serial number for 3 in the previous version box and your serial number for 5 in the upgrade box.

  • HT1750 My I mac won't boot, I have gone to restore but the apple hard drive next to the main hard drive says the drive is "locked" ??????  What to do?

I have an IMac which won't boot up and when I tried the restore function the Hard Drive next to the Main Hard Drive says it is "locked" when I tried to use it to restore my system.  I have Mountain Lion which was working fine until recently.  Now I can sit LITERALLY for an hour waiting for the gear to stop spinning but not results for loading the program.   HELP!!!

As of 10.8.4,  the volume must be unlocked first.
Here’s how the unlock procedure works for Disk Utility:
Boot your Mac and hold down ⌘-R (Command –R) to boot from the Recovery HD partition.
    Open Disk Utility.
    Select your locked hard drive.
Under the File menu, select Unlock “Drive Name”
When prompted for a password, enter the password of the authorized account on the drive.
Once you unlock the disk, hold down the Option key on your keyboard and click on the File menu.
Under the File menu, select Turn Off Encryption… with the Option key held down, it is no longer grayed-out.
When prompted for a password, enter the password of the authorized account on the drive.
Disk Utility should display a progress window labeled Starting conversion to JHFS+
Your drive should now be unlocked.

hello everyone. I have recently installed a Samsung SSD (solid state hard drive) into my destop PC. For some reason Lightroom does not see it ? So i cannot ingest photos from it, or copy photos from a card to it. It is not listed as a drive option. LR sees every other drive. My computer sees it fine, so i was able to create a catalogue there. Im running windows 8.1. Any ideas ? I will also add that this drive became corrupt and was repaired by Samsung. Maybe they didn't do a very good job.. ..

Yes pretty much that, but to clarify sorry
    Opened Lightroom.
    Create new catalogue.
This opened the Windows 8 file explorer window and Windows recognises the drive. So I was able to create a catalogue there and save.
I then inserted my memory card into my card reader which LR recognised. I selected it, chose all the photos within and then navigated to the right side of the Lr import dialogue window to locate this problem drive as on this occasion i want the RAW files on the same drive as the lrcat. However all my other drives are listed but not this Samsung SSD.
In addition this Samsung SSD is not listed a drive to import from in the same dialogue window.
