Install Dual Boot & Partitioning

Can I install Solaris 8 to an existing Linux partition? I have 3 gigs partitioned for Linux. I created the partition using Partition Magic and I want to uninstall Linux and replace it with Solaris. If so, what changes do I need to make to the partition? It is currently set up as: Linux root and swap.

As Yolanda has pointed out, there is no incompatibility between Windows 8 64 bit and Windows 7 32 bit operating systems when configured in a multiboot environment. The errors you are receiving all point to missing boot files in the Windows 7 32 bit installation.
One solution which I highly recommend for anyone requiring access to multiple environments is
Client Hyper-V. With Windows 8 the full server grade type 1 hypervisor Hyper-V is available on a client operating system and eliminates both the complexities of a multiboot boot loader and the need
to reboot to switch between isolated environments. To host Hyper-V, you will need Windows 8.1 Professional or Enterprise, but if you do not have Professional or Enterprise you can upgrade with the Windows 8.1 Pro Pack to gain access to the functionality.

    Hi Niel,
Thank you for your fast reply. So if I buy mac mini MC815 model, which comes with preinstalled Lion I can run dual boot(Lion and Mt Lion)?
I have one more question: Can I install Mac OS 10.6 on that mini device? If it's not supported which mac mini model can I get to support Snow Leopard and Lion and Mt Lion?

  • [SOLVED] Can't install; dual-boot sharing partitions?

Hi, I'm currently dual-booting Linux Mint 14 and Windows 7 on my laptop, and decided to replace Mint with Arch. Somehow, though, I don't think I ever divided my HDD into seperate partitions for Linux and Windows. Using gparted (or fdisk), /dev/sda (my HDD) has essentially got a Dell utility partition (100MiB, sda1), a recovery partition (15GiB, sda2), a 1 MiB unallocated space, and a 284 GiB section labeled "OS" (sda3). I can't touch the partition on Linux because it's always in use.
I can't get through with the installation because of this, and can't find an answer no matter how often or in-depth I RTFM. If someone could point me in the right direction, that'd be great.
    Thanks.

I would recommend downloading the gparted cd here, and setting up your partitioning scheme from there. I am quite suprised about your system setup though, you may want to nuke it and start again because something weird is going on.
Yeah, I'm not sure exactly what's happening. I'll look into using gparted as a LiveCD, but I'd rather not wipe everything if I can help it.
I don't know if this is the case, but Ubuntu had (has?) an option to install to an image on the windows partition (wubi), rather than a partition of it's own. It's possible that Mint adapted this for their spinoff, and would explain why you only have a Windows partition.
I recommend that you modify your partition scheme if you want to install Arch. Shrink your Windows partition as much as the Windows partitioner will allow (avoid gparted and similar tools for this purpose, the Windows in-built partitioner should be adequate), then create an extended partition to house your Arch partition, swap partition, data partition, or whatever partitions you want.
Yeah, I installed Mint from a mounted image in Daemon Tools, so that could explain it. I'll look into shrinking my Windows partition and seeing if I can somehow remove Mint from my Windows partition. I still have grub and all, if that makes any difference.
there is a mint4win,  do you see something like this on boot? http://i.imgur.com/sPOMx.png
Yep! I may have installed mint4win. Let me look into that.

  • How do I install dual-boot Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 on one hard disk ?

I tried to install Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 on same disk using CDs, but
the second installation overwrote the first Solaris which was installed
previoudly on the half-disk size partition of same disk.
How do I install two Solarises on one hard disk ?
    Thanks
    Yakov

There are no tricks to get Solaris to dual boot on the same drive. Just allocate and pick the free slices not used by the first Solaris install when you put in the second install. Technically speaking there is nothing preventing you from running seven separately bootable Solaris instances on the same drive (one of 8 available slices is overlap -- slice 2) provided you use a swap file on a root partition instead of reserving a whole slice for swap.

  • Mac mini with 10.6 installed - dual boot 10.8?

    Hi all
    I have an a Mac mini with 10.6.8 installed (think it came with 10.5) and would like to buy Mountain Lion from the Apple Store and install it as a dual boot setup. I think the hardware is too old for 10.10 (although it does give me the option to download it from the App store). I would like to keep my existing install and install 10.8 either alongside 10.6 or on a separate partition. Couple of questions;
Can I shrink the partition that contains my existing 10.6 install (there is plenty of space on the disk), create another partition and install 10.8 onto it?
Failing that can I install 10.8 alongside 10.6 on the same partition (like we used to do for OS9 and OSX)?
For 10.8 I will be receiving a "content code" for the Mac App Store - once I download the files and start the install presumably the Mac will restart and I will get access to the usual install utilities (without the OS running)?
    Many thanks for any help.

If your computer will run Mountain Lion, it will run Yosemite.
    1. Yes.
    2. I would go with 2 partitions.
    Yes.
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

  • Windows 7 instal dual boot

I'm trying to install windows 7 as a dual boot. I downloaded easybcd to take care of the dual boot start selection. Then proceeded with usb instal which didn't work. So I then downloaded the iso and burned to disk. Which wouldn't load (yes bios had dvd as first boot), but I then just went into windows 8, found the setup, which started. When I clicked update and instal it hung and crashed. But when I hit don't update and install. It did just fine. Went through the whole install and down the list of like 5 items 0-100%.
But now, after rebooting after installing, it just sits at the starting windows screen, with the red green blue yellow windows 'flag' flashing brighter/softer. Its been there for like 20 min. After rebooting, I get options for windows 7, windows 8, or windows installer. If I try 7 I get error right away and it restarts me, if I choose 8 it loads me into my normal windows 8. IF I choose installer, it brings me back to the starting windows screen.
I don't know if its still installing things, as the windows flag is flashing brighter and then softer over and over, but its been again another 30 min and its still there. No % marker or anything.
I haven't installed any drivers (which I have saved on d:/ and on a usb as well) as I haven't had the opportunity nor know when to install them other than after windows starts.
    Any help much appreciated.

I tried that, but when I get to the select a drive/partition screen, it that's where it says cannot install on that drive/partition. No option to continue. But, once I get my super raid daughter board and my 3x 480gb crucial m550 msata drives, I will just have one msata set up gpt for windows 8, one set for ntfs and for windows 7, and then the third will have to be my scratch disk. I'll then use my 2.5" 1tb Samsung evo for all data, source files, and use my external enclosure with 1tb Samsung evo for my export. Wish there was a way to get the new gt72 4x m.2 sata daughter board.

  • [SOLVED] Longwinded beginner - Dual-boot & partition questions

    Hello,
I'm interested in installing Arch Linux alongside Windows XP (dual-boot). I have little previous linux experience, although I have rented some servers that have used it in the past, as well as compiling some stuff with it while at University (studying Computer Science). Nevertheless, I am relatively confident that if I can still boot into XP, I will be able to acccustomise myself and like the fact that this distribution seems to be hands-on and leaves a lot up to the user.
I've been reading the Beginner's Guide and the dual boot guide, and I would like to get started, however, I'm not going to go ahead with this until I am certain that I will be left with a system that can still boot into Windows XP. I assume that it'll take me a while to get to grips with Arch, and in the meantime it would be massively inconvenient if I couldn't work/play/etc...
    What I already know
Anyway, currently I have a 250GB hard drive that I use for Windows (as well as 3 other hard drives full of stuff). I have partitioned the drive with Windows XP on it with gparted like so:
    (in order)
    UNALLOCATED                         32GB
    SDB1 (Windows XP)                 50GB
    SDB2 (Downloads)                  150GB
I hope to use the unallocated space to hold linux (and then have access to my other windows drives in the future, using ntfs-3g), however, I am a little confused over what partitions I 'should' have and how large they should be, considering that I will use the OS to mainly develop, browse the web, listen to music, etc...
    I was thinking:
    /boot    -- ext2         -- 100MB
    /          -- ext4         -- 15GB
    swap    --                -- 1GB
    /home  -- ext4         -- 12GB
    /var     -- ReiserFS   -- 4GB
    Questions
    • Is 30GB too little, even though most of my stuff is on other NTFS hard drives?
    • How large should / be? I've read that it contains /bin, /dev, /etc and others. How do I know how much space these need? Am I misunderstanding things?
    • Is a /var partition unnecessary? How large should it be?
    • 10GB for /home, 1GB for swap, 100MB for /boot?
    • Do I need a /tmp or /usr? This is a single-user machine, but I don't want it to get messy!
    • I was thinking of giving /boot ext2, and /var ReiserFS, and then giving every other partition ext4. That okay?
    • Do I need to set these partitions up when installing, or can I set them up in advance with gparted - it might be simpler.
    • Due to already having 2 NTFS primary partitions on the hard disk, I presume that some of the above will need to be logical partitions in an extended partition? How is this done?
Once the partitions have been set up, and linux is installed, I presume it's just a matter of completing the rest of Part I of the guide, and then ammending /boot/grub/menu.lst to include 'Windows XP'? At that point I am able to restart Windows XP, and only delve into Arch when I want to continue with the configuration, fixing, and so on...
Sorry for the wall of text, and thanks for your patience. (:

That's the thing, I expect that I'm doing something wrong with the GRUB loader - and I admit my hard disk layout has been quite strange for a long time before installing linux.
Basically, it currently looks like this:
    /dev/sda1    ntfs    Music           250GB
    /dev/sdb3    ext2   /boot           120MB
    /dev/dsb4    extended
    ---- /dev/sdb5    linux-swap       1GB
    ---- /dev/sdb6    ext4    /           20GB
    ---- /dev/sdb7    ext4    /home   12GB
    /dev/sdb1    ntfs    Windows XP  50GB
    /dev/sdb2    ntfs    Downloads    150GB
    /dev/sdc1    ntfs    TV & Movies   950GB
    • This list is in order that the entries appear on the hard disk, hence /boot is in the first 1024 cylinders of the hard disk, but as you can see the sdb numbers are actually in the chronological order that I created them.
    • I used an extended partition with logical partitions inside since I had read that there was an issue with more than 4 partitions in a hard disk, and I already had 2 NTFS partitions.
    • When it asked me to install GRUB to the MBR, I installed it to SDB as opposed to SDBx as it asked me to in the manual. This is the drive that contains /boot!
    • I just managed to amend something in the menu.lst, in order that I can boot into Windows XP. Therefore my machine is not totally fucked up any more. (: Unfortunately, what I changed doesn't make sense to me, since I would have expected Windows XP to be on a different hard disk.
    The contents of sdb3:
    grub    kernel26-fallback.img    kernel26.img
    lost+found    System.map26    umlinuz26
    When typing the command /sbin/blkid:
    /dev/sda1: UUID="D0..." LABEL="Music" TYPE="ntfs"
    /dev/sdb1: UUID="A8..." LABEL="Windows XP" TYPE="ntfs"
    /dev/sdb2: UUID="557..." LABEL="Downloads" TYPE="ntfs"
    /dev/sdb3: UUID="2676..." TYPE="ext2"
    /dev/sdb5: UUID="0474..." TYPE="swap"
    /dev/sdb6: UUID="0886..." TYPE="ext4"
    /dev/sdb7: UUID="519becf..." TYPE="ext4"
    /dev/sdc1: UUID="46AC59" LABEL="TV & Movies" TYPE="ntfs"
    Inside /boot/grub/menu.lst:

    default 0
    color light-blue/black light-cyan/blue

    root (hd1,5)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/0886... ro vga=773
    initrd          /boot/kernel26.img
    # (3) Arch Linux (Fallback)

    kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/0886... ro vga=773
    initrd          /boot/kernel26-fallback.img
edit: I'm able to access all of the installation partitions with gparted-live's terminal (by mounting the devices I need to access into folders in my root folder), so is there anything else you want me to check/change in order to find my linux root/boot partition?

  • [SOLVED] dual boot partitions

I have four partitions for my arch install.  Does this mean that I won't be able to dual boot another distribution without having to reinstall arch?  There can only be 4 partitions right?  Or is there some way around it?
    Thanks
Last edited by acidic (2012-04-20 11:06:23)

There can be only 4 primary partitions  on a disk. However, one of the partitions can be made 'extended'. In that you can have any number of logical partitions. So there is no problem for multibooting. I believe Windows and BSD need a primary partition for installation.  Obviously one of the primary partitions has to go. You can install full Arch system on one partition. I am not sure if this can be done without need for reinstalling arch. Following link of full system backup may be of help:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fu … with_rsync
    Also see:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ad … Partitions
Output of 'sudo fdisk -l' will show you if all your partitions are primary or there is an extended one also. You may post the output here.
If there is a swap partition, that can be deleted, converted to extended, logical partitions made in extended, one of them made swap, and other distributions can be added. This should not cause any loss of data but this will require partitions to be resized.

  • Satellite Pro A200: XP + Vista installed/dual boot possible?

    Hi,
I am not sure if I am right here at XP OS but I post it as it is OS related.
My Satellite Pro A200 (PSAE7) runs smoothly with XP but I want to create a sandbox (partition) for/with Vista.
Basically I know that it is possible to run XP and Vista on one system. *But*, Satellite Pro A200 notebooks are shipped with a BIOS for XP and one for Vista and with information that you have to install the correct one. For me this means that you have to install BIOS for XP when running XP and BIOS for Vista when running Vista.
    Question:
Is it possible to install Vista on a Satellite Pro A200 with XP as main OS and having so XP BIOS installed?
Boot loader would be Acronis OSS as this loader already manage my two XP partitions.
    Many thanks for any information!
    Best regards,
    Andreas

    Hi
In my opinion there are no serious reasons why you shouldnt be able to use Xp and Vista on your Satellite Pro A200.
Ok there are different BIOS for Vista 64bit, 32bit and Win XP but your Vista should run also using the BIOS for Win XP.
Ive got other Satellite notebook series and Im able to use XP and Vista at the same time. I mean Ive got a choice to boot either the XP or Vista ;) and Im still using the old BIOS version.
Ok some functions are not available like FN keys but this is not very important for me.
Well, to cut this story I think you can use Vista and XP without changing the BIOS ;)

  • Install dual boot Windows 7 onto Yoga 13

    Hi
I'd like to install Win 7 alongside the Windows 8 that came installed on my Yoga. Does anybody have any tips or advice for doing this ..... I don;t want to damage the one key recovery system ... will changing the size of the Windows 8 partition to free up space for a Win 7 partition affect the operation of the recovery system ?
    thanks
    Brian

    i have a tri-boot on my yoga with Win7Pro, Win8Pro and Win8Core
it was a hard way, but you can get there if you want. btw i upgraded a second ssd with 256gb.
first of all, you have to know, that if you want to do that, you have to forget the onebutton-recovery.
drivers will work most except wlan. so you have to buy a usb wlan stick or use a usb-ethernet adaptor.
what you need it a win8 media or iso. any one works because the media has both versions of win8 on it.
due to the fact, that you have to install win7 as first os, you will have to wipe the whole disk before installation.
start the yoga and enter bios setup. load defaults with F9, disable secure boot. change os to "other os", under boot set uefi only.
it is mandatory that you have an external dvd that supports efi, otherwise you will not be able to install with this settings and it wont show up on your bootable devices.
you can also build an uefi capable usb-stick, which is a little tricky. use google to see how.
the easyies way is to have both isos burned on dvd (win7 and win8).
before you shut down your comp, insert the win7 dvd into your drive.
after those bios settings connect your drive to the yoga into the port on the right side.
start by pressing the recoverybutton, hit F12 for the bootmenue.
there you should see the efi usb dvd device.
if it already starts your windows, you have to change the bootorder in the bios.
when you get the screen "hit any key to boot from cd/dvd..." youre on the right way.
select install now and then when it shows you the partitions, delete all partitions and make two ne partitions with 61gb
select one for win7 and finish the installation.
after that do the same with your win8 media.
there are some details, which have to be correct. just ask, when you have more questions.

  • Installing dual boot

I have windows windows xp running fine, and I installed mac osx on a spare hd. When I boot the mac hd, all I see is a blinking white line on the top left of a black screen

p.s. I also have ubuntu 9.04, but that boot loader will be reinstalled once mac works

oh haha! I forgot to change that data. I am running it on a 2004 - 2006 gateway PC (I am not sure what year, but it was around there.)
It forget where I got the cd, but I formatted a drive on XP using macdrive, installed mac osx, and can only partially boot mac if I have only one hd plugged in (the mac one of course) Even when I do this, I have to start the mac osx cd, it goes to the hd after that for some odd reason (or I will get a blinking white line) and it will give me a prohibitory sign!

  • Running Dual boot windows 8 and win 7 pro with xp mode installed!! I love it!!

It took over 2 days to figure out how to adjust the bios to get my win 7 pro DVD to boot and install dual boot on this GREAT MACHINE!!
Step 1: using diskmgmt.msc you have to shring the C partition. I shrunk it so I had 80GB remaining as unallocated space.
Step 2: You have to enter the machine Bios adn set the BIOS to Both and UEFI as first
Step 3: Connect your usb dvd
Step 4: Put your win 7 pro dvd in the usb dvd drive
Step 5: Reboot your machine and when it starts press F12 to get the boot menu and select the usb dvd drive then press enter
    The machine restarts
Message on screen says press a key to boot from cd/dvd
Press space and it boots up the win 7 pro DVD
After files copy and load the setup screen asks to accept the agreement and where to install win 7
BE SURE TO SELECT THE 80GB location
Then follow thru the win 7 prompts to load it.
When the machine restarts you will see a dual boot screen with Windows 7 on top as first selection and Windows 8 below it as 2nd selection.
Make sure to hit enter with windows 7 selected
    The win 7 installation completes.
You will see many items with drivers not installed dont fret.
You can load most of the drivers by highlighting the device in control panel/device manager and pick update driver then select BROWSE for DRIVER and be sure to put in drive D:\ which is now the windows 8 drive and hit search.
Many of the windows 8 drivers installed with no issue.
The Realtek driver was an exception .. goto to the lenovo site and pick the x100e tablet and download the LAN driver from there  about (4MB). Copy it to flash drive and install it in win 7 from the .exe file. The driver for LAN will install sucessfully. The version of the driver is 7.46 something the 7.11 versions do not workl.
I have only 3 drivers that I could not find - 2 list as unknown and are related to ACPI or power management and 1 lists as USB controller but all the USB stuff works without it.
Be sure to either shutdown the system or sign out of win 8 when your done so you get the dual boot menu. If you shutdown while logged into win 8 the next time you start up it will go right to win 8 until you signout and restart.
Just to let you know an easy way to shutdown is go to the desktop and press ALT + FN + F4 and a shutdown menu comes up on the desktop.
Once win 7 pro is installed you can download the XP mode free from Microsoft and install it.
This is of course AFTER you have ACTIVATED WINDOWS 7 ONLINE with YOUR ACTIVATION KEY(you supply).
ENJOY! This is the BEST machine I ever had!

It's been many, many years since I don't do dual boot anymore. Don't find the reason to do it, either. Different kinds of virtualization should be enough. Anyway...

  • New to Mac... I have partitioned my hard drive Dual Boot M.Lion/S. Leopard with 2 OS partitions and a Media Partition. How do I direct my file storage to the Media Partition? Can I put a "Media" folder on both OS Desktops that will allow me to drag n drop

New to Mac... I have Partitioned my MacBookPro with Dual Boot Partitions running M.Lion and S. Leopard and a seperate media partition.
How do I assign my storage to the MEDIA Partition once I am booted in either OS?
Can I place a folder on my desktop so I can read/write ALL my media to?

Why not? Make a folder in your media partition and put an alias folder (shortcut) on the desktop of each partition/ OS. You can right click on the folder in the media partition and click on "make alias".
If you want to direct your iTunes media to point to the media partition, google "move iTunes library to external disk" and follow the steps; the instructions should be the same for a seperate partition as it is for an external drive.
