Install failed and now computer won't reboot!

Hi there,
I have tried to install the snow leopard 10.6.3 update CD on my Mac and I was told it failed and that I needed to restart - however, I hit restart and I get the start-up chime and apple logo on white with spinning gear underneath, but that's as far as I get! It just freezes everytime. I could hear the CD spinning around like it was trying to start which I thought might be causing issues - so I held down eject and got it out but the computer still won't load.
I have tried holding down 'Alt' when it first boots and I get the choice to boot from the Hard drive or CD-rom but clicking either seems to do nothing. I read somewhere to hold C but this doesn't seem to do anything either.
Any help would be much appreciated!

Sounds like your boot drive died, take the machine to a local PC/Mac tech and let them install a new boot drive and provide the 10.6 disks as it contains the full version of OS X. You can reinstall the iLife from the 10.5 disks.
Far as your old drive, hopefully data recover isn't necessary if you have backups.
It can be many thousands of dollars if the drive platters need to be dissected, if the drive works and Data Rescue can be used with a external SATA to USB adpater cable, then it's about $150 for that.

  • Upgraded to 10.4.9 from Tiger 10.4.5 and now mac won't reboot

    Hello everybody
I bought a mac mini recently "in perfect working order" with lots of installed software and the mac engineer who sold it said it could be upgraded from 10.4.5 to 10.4.9 apple's latest. I did this last night and now it won't reboot! I get a white screen with the little wheel turning and then it switches off and gives up entirely. What can I do?

Thanks all for your help. Yes I was hoping to use a disc for a Power PC mac mini when it's an intel. I got the disc out by holding down the mouse on startup. I contacted the seller and he says my OS has got corrupted and I can get a mac doctor to reinstall it. He never included the original OS10.4.6 when he sold it to me. It was bought as sold - does he even have the original discs one wonders. Anyway I also told him that I had originally plugged in my ipod which said it wanted iTunes updating then when I had done that a message said iTunes wouldn't work unless I updated the OS to 10.4.9. Included when I updated the software was a firmware update. So the OS has become corrupted and must be restored by a Mac authorized repairer. I hope this is possible without losing the applications already installed
Anyway that's what I'll do and thanks everybody for all your great help

Restoring my ios6 backup still installed ios7 and now ios7 won't activate
Why the **** would restoring from an ios6 backup dump me into a nonfunctional bug-ridden mess that is ios7? I want to put my phone back as it was before I installed the buggy POS that is ios7.

Hey buddy, if you're not going to pretend to answer my question, don't waste my time.
I restored my ios6 backup and it still dumped me in ios7. How do I put my phone back on an actually usuable operating system?

  • Mountain Lion update, and now computer won't start up?

Writing this for a friend, as his computer is inop at the moment.  Hence this message.
He has a new 27" iMac.  He upgraded to Mountain Lion a few weeks ago, and then had intermittent problems with apps unexpectantly shutting down.
Now he did a ML update this morning, and his computer won't start up.  It gets to the point of the Apple logo coming up, a progress bar, and then the spinning wheel, but then shuts itself down right afterwards.
A safe boot yields the exact same result.
Any thoughts out there on what he could try to get it up and running again?
Thanks much for any and all help.

Thank you for the fast response.
He was able to get into Disk Utility with the Command and R keys, but when he tried verifying the disk, in red it said 'Invalid Node Structure, volume could not be verified completely'.
He went ahead and verified it anyway, then proceeded to repair it.  Howver, it stopped repairing, said it cannot repair, and that he should back up files and reformat the disk.
How can he back up his files?  He cannot see a way to do it.  Is there anything else he can do besides having to reformat the disk?
This is his first Mac (after much prompting from me to go Mac), and he's afraid he's now lost everything on there.

  • Installed v8 and now itunes won't open

I upgraded to V 8 and now itunes won't open. Saying my audio configuration not right. Anyone know how to fix this?

I always backup and archive any and all versions I've used and downloaded, or at least until I feel safe with the current version.
Setting a backup also lets a system be restored to prior point in time.

  • Tried to download iOS 8 but failed and now phone won't go on stuck on plug into I tunes screen

Trows to download iOS on the laptop but said failed and keeps failing but phone won't do anything now stuck on plug in to I tunes help please

hey guys I was in the phone to apples for over hour and a half and he couldn't fix it, so I took it to my local stormfront shop and he plugged it in and it restored straight away and had the iOS 8 on it, it's very common he was telling me and sometimes windows interacts with the download for apple updates and causes the phones to go into basically limp mode, best to plug in to an Apple Mac etc

  • Updated to iTunes 10.1 and Now Computer Won't Recognize iPhone

I updated to iTunes 10.1 last night after I plugged in my phone and iTunes prompted me to. After doing so, I restarted my computer, plugged my phone back in, and now I get the message "USB Device Not Recognized" and my phone doesn't show up in iTunes. It does, however, charge while plugged in. The computer just doesnt' recognize it. I've followed the Apple page on what to do if there are driver issues. So I've uninstalled iTunes and all the other components, reinstalled, opened Device Manager and uninstalled and reinstalled the driver from there, have tried to update, but when I do, the C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers folder does not exist.
I am running Windows 7, and I have an iPhone 3Gs running iOS4.1.
Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this? I'm out of ideas.

Well, I figured it out. My sync cable was the problem, apparently. I just used a different sync cable and it magically downloaded the driver with no problem and itunes popped right up. Figures, eh?

  • 10.4.11 installed and now computer won't re-boot

this happenned about 6 months ago to us as well with an update. and archive and install solved it that time. i tried it again this time - nada tried disc utilities, repair - nada - clean bill of health. I verified permissions, but did not hit repair permissions yet. when i start up it gets to the apple screen and thats it unless I hold down c to start from my disc. there is no thinking clock when the apple comes on either. I have an external drive with firewire and most of our important stuff is off. i'd like to get back in once again pull somr more off and then wipe the sucker out and start over what does that do really - will it breath new life into this dinosuar and buy me a couple months till i get afford a shiny new one?

ok - came home fired it up and it turned on! works fine, however - I still have a question - my hard drive is almost full. all photos are off on my external and i don't have that much music this computer is 7 years old what are some things I can get rid of. I have now done 2 archive and installs i noticed these are huge Previus system" folders - can i dump them?

  • SL upgrade installation failed and now macbook won't boot

    Hi all,
I did some searching in the forums, but I couldn't find this answer -- I'm sorry if it has already been asked/answered.
I have a 2.5 yr old intel macbook that was running leopard, and I bought the SL upgrade.
My mac has been hovering around 0-10 gigs of free space for the past 6 months or more. It tends to stay very full since I have a lot of photos and music. When my HD reaches it capacity, I usually connect up to my timemachine (500gb) and dump off 10-30 gigs of pictures, then repeat the process.
So, I had around 4 GB free when I tried to install SL, it said it wasn't enough so I deleted some movies/downloaded content quickly, restarted, then tried again and with 7-10gb free (I don't remember exactly) it let me begin the install and choose my Mac HD to install it to.
I came back and it said there was an error and it needed to restart and try again.
After restarting, the mac can no longer find the boot disk, and I put the CD back in and did disk diagnostic. The diag said it needed to try to repair. I tried to repair and it said, this in unrepairable. You need to try to save off as much data as you can, clean/clear the disk and reinstall the operating system.
If I try to restart the system and let it load normally, it stays on the grey Apple loading screen with the spinning circle. After 30-60 seconds it just turns off because it is failing to mount or boot the disk (I'm assuming).
Does this seem strange? My computer is basically saying the disk is done and you need to reformat, but I don't feel like it's really corrupted. When running the diag test, the app unmounts the disk to test and then can never re-mount until I restart, so that's also weird.
I have not backed up my computer in 40-60 days so I would really be taking a step back if I just wiped it right now then tried to get some data back from my time machine.
Is there a way that I get access the disk somehow to move data to my time machine, or USB, or something, before I wipe it out? Also, can the SL disk wipe and reinstall the OS or do I need the OSX Tiger/leopard installation disks?
Thank you very much for any advice, sorry again if this is a repeat question.

This is VERY bad. you should keep at least 10% (better 15%) of drive space free at all times to avoid potentially serious problems resulting from disk fragmentation. they can lead to ALL kinds of issues including catastrophic directory damage which you likely got.
It tends to stay very full since I have a lot of photos and music. When my HD reaches it capacity, I usually connect up to my timemachine (500gb) and dump off 10-30 gigs of pictures, then repeat the process.
this is a VERY bad idea too. Time Machine is a backup tool, not an archiving one. using it as an archiving tool as you did can and will lead to data loss. TM constantly thins its backups. it keeps hourly backups for 24 hours, daily backups for 30 days and weekly backups till the TM drive is full. the backups are thinned without warning. and when the drive gets full it starts deleting old backups to make room for new ones. it's supposed to warn you about it once if you have that option checked in system preferences. but this warning is only given once and sometimes not at all.

    no, it doesn't.

oh yes, it is. the only wonder is that this didn't happen sooner given that you were keeping the drive as full as you did.
When running the diag test, the app unmounts the disk to test and then can never re-mount until I restart, so that's also weird.
I have not backed up my computer in 40-60 days so I would really be taking a step back if I just wiped it right now then tried to get some data back from my time machine.

you don't need leopard or tiger disks. you can do a full system restore from TM using the snow leopard disk. you can try to get some data off the drive first. do you have access to another mac? does your macbook has a firewire port? if yes you can boot it in target mode, connect it to another drive by a firewire cable and copy what you need to a different drive from there. otherwise you'd have to either do it from terminal while booted from the SL DVD or install SL on an external drive , boot from that and do it from there. also, you can try using Disk Warrior or a similar tool on your main drive. It may work where Disk Utility failed.
Thank you very much for any advice, sorry again if this is a repeat question.

  • Mountain Lion install failed and now can't access HD

Currently on a Early 2011 high-end Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard.
I downloaded and then went to install Mountain Lion, everything was fine and it began to restart for the install after the initial loading thing. However, when it came to install it gave me an error that roughly said the drive is damaged and can't be repaired, telling me to click restart and try installing again. I did this, (taking slightly longer and the colour of the background became more yellow at one point) but instead of the logon pane it went to OSX Utilities.
On Disk Utility, it said Macintosh HD was unmounted. Below that, under 'disk1' Mac OS X Install ESD appears and then below that under 'disk2' Mac OS X Base System is shown. I tried to mount the HD but it didn't work, and when I tried to repair the disk it said it couldn't be repaired and that I should back up my files. I do think my files are still present, I was able to access them on the Burn pane through the finder window. I then tried to reboot using the Macintosh HD startup disk but that then said it didn't have enough information to do so.
This person's problem (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3192437) seemed almost identical to mine, however I have files I need and cannot afford to lose them. What do you suggest I do to retrieve my files? That is what I am solely concerned for right now. I backed up the most important files earlier, but I really do not want to lose everything.

Whatever you do, DO NOT REFORMAT THE DRIVE. You can just get a small <500Gb EXTERNAL bus powered drive, dismantle it and follow the instructions above. If you already have one then that's even better.
The drive I'm showing here is the drive that used to be inside of my computer. It took apart an old 320Gb seagate drive. The connections on these drives are all universally interchangeable. They just add some circuits and a USB (or other) interface. I would just get the cheapest drive that you can get that is for laptops and looks simple to take apart. (This is almost exactly the drive that I did this too http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-FreeAgent-Portable-External-ST903203FAA2E1-RK/dp/B 001FWIE0K/ref=sr_1_56?ie=UTF8&qid=1343340447&sr=8-56&keywords=seagate+external+h ard+drive)
The "old internal" drive should still be able to allow you to install ML on the "new" drive as long as you tell it to. It sounds complicated, but it's really not once you get in there and start doing it. It was actually quite easy.
