Install G3 IDE Drive into G5 - will it work?

Hi, My old G3 400MHz iMac died after a power cut and I can't easily resurrect it this time. Is it possible to temporarily install its drive into my G5 to transfer the data it contains onto the main drive?
I've used Macs for many years but never had to get technical before, and don't want to break anything.
Apologies to all, if this is a question you see regularly. I ran various searches on the forum first, but couldn't find anything to match.
Thanks for any help and suggestions.

So the answer is no, an ATA/IDE drive cannot be substituted for a SATA drive in a G5?
You can buy little ATA to SATA converter boards that allow you to use legacy ATA drives with a SATA controller. However, depending on their size and whether they're vertically or horizontally mounted, they may or may not fit into the G5s drive bays. With G4s they'll fit into some drive bays but not others.

According to Apple they're not officially supported, although that doesn't mean they don't work:

Perhaps someone has had some success using one. I'd be tempted to put the money towards a new SATA drive though instead.

  • Copy drive into xserve - will it work??

i am migrating an os10.5 server from a mini to an xserve. my thought is to copy the entire boot disc, name and all, overwriting whatever software is on the boot disc on the xserve at shipping.
    is this foolish?
is there an easy way to import all users and settings and not do this? server is using ldap and also localadmin, i'm afraid the delicate balance of users/permissions, that is mostly working, will be upset if i simply try to import all the local and ldap users.
    thoughts are much appreciated. tia.

    Hi dtich-
Copying the boot disk won't work isn't going to work, as the XServe also needs the software specific to its hardware platform in order to function.

  • Installing IDE drives into MacPro

I'm in the market for a MacPro. I have 2 IDE 3.5" drives, currently connected via FireWire in their own cases, that I'd like to use in the MacPro. I realize that the DIY HD install documents say I need a SATA drive, but is there any way to install my IDE drives into the HD drive bays (not the optical drive bay)?

I cannot seem to load raw images into LR 2.5.  I've been using this for years.  I always load from memory card, but it gives me an unknown error message.  I tried to load from camera, hard drive, & external drive and still will not work.  I checked import menu and nothing has changed.  I loaded the photos onto my tablet and images are fine, so do not feel it is the memory card.  Any thoughts?

The error message probably said "unsupported or damaged"
The T3 requires Lightroom 3.4.1 or later. You can either upgrade to a more current version of Lightroom (version 5.6 is the most recent) or you can use the free Adobe DNG Converter to convert the RAWs to DNG, which should import into Lightroom properly.

  • Existing IDE drive into a new G5?

I'm considering buying a new G5 (intel Mac) or getting a used G5 (non-intel) and wondered if I can simply put my exising IDE drive from a G4 into either the intel mac or into a late-model G5? That would save me a lot of time re-installing software into a new machine.
    Thanks.

One way would be to get SATA-ATA power and data adaptor cables, since the G5s only accept SATA drives.
Here's one example; you might be able to shop around for a cheaper deal.
Or, you could just pick up a relatively cheap 3.5" ATA enclosure and use it as an external Firewire drive.

  • Re: install of 80gig drive into a MS-5187 bios freezes

I am trying to install a WD800JB hard drive into my Borther-in-law's computer which has a
MS-5187 mainboard. When I re-start the computer the drive is recognized as a slave, but the bios freezes just before boot to WinXP. On the screen is a chart in the bios screen with the installation. However by the new drive there is only the following "UDMA,4" but no indication of the drive size whereas the older drive indicates the size of the drive. How do I solve the issue of the new install? Do I flash the bios or do I install a PCI/IDE contoller card? I tried using the MSI liveupdate and it indicates that I have the latest bios an Award 4.51PG. Help please.
    Thanks Don

Yes WD does say in the personalized setup manual produced with their version of Data Lifeguard that the Award 4.51 BIOS can be an issue. Their advice is an updated BIOS or to manual limit the drive's capacity to 32Gigs which to me seems pointless since it is a 80Gig drive that was purchased for it's capacity as stated. I downloaded the BIOS fix from the suggested link, but am unsure of how to do this sort of procedure. Everyone I have talked to concurs that a BIOS update is risky. As for the cable I tried my own cable because it came with my WD drive and still that did not work. As for the jumper selection I tried every possible configuration to no avail.

  • TS4463 I have just installed office 365 and now icloud will not work.  It says that I need to open or install outlook.  Before I installed 365, ICloud worked  and I believe I had Outlook loaded yet it is not there any longer.   I am lost.

I just installed office 365 Home Premium editiion and have lost my ICloud capabilities.  I cannot sign in nor will Photostream work.   A message comes up that says I need Outlook on my computer (I had it before  the 365 was loaded).   I checked on-line and it says that windows 7 does not support outlook and that I cannot download it (don't know how I got it before).   I am totally confused as what to do.   Really upset as I needed the new office package as Windows 7 wouldn't support the 2010 started edition any longer without my buysing that.  Figured it made sense to get the newest version.  Packaging says that it contains outlook.   I don't know what to do at this point.

Did you remove the existing installation of Office before installing the new one?
I checked on-line and it says that windows 7 does not support outlook and that I cannot download it (don't know how I got it before).
Outlook is part of Office 365, and Windows 7 supports all versions of Outlook back to 2003.
I am totally confused as what to do.
You need to correctly remove all versions of Office on your Mac, you need to remove their settings as well. You need to save your Office Userdata from removal by moving it temporarily. I would also uninstall iCloud.
Then reinstall Office 365 followed by iCloud.

  • LaCie d2 Fire Wire CD-RW Drive...will it work on Intel based iMac?

Had this installed on old G4. Will it work on iMac?

    Addendum to previous question:
Went to LaCie web site to attempt to get answer to this, but site wouldn't even recognize the Serial #...maybe it is outdated.
Think I installed it in 2002.

  • Installed new DVD drive, now iBook will not charge

    Hi guys,
I'm a long-time Mac user, and this is the first time I've had any problems so I'm new to this board. I had a bit of a look around, both on this forum and the FAQs, and this appears to be a unique problem.
Basically, for a while my iBook CD drive was spitting out CDs, as per a common problem which I was not able to resolve. Eventually the tray broke and it would not click back into place, and so I was left with an iBook with a CD tray constantly popped out.
I ordered a new DVD drive/burner that claimed it would fit an iBook, and when it arrived I pulled apart my laptop and installed it. Everything appeared to be in order, until I tried to plug in the AC adaptor.
The orange light goes on for about 10-15 seconds, then slowly fades away to nothing. If I unplug and plug it back in straight away, I get no light and no charge. If I wait 15 minutes, the orange light goes back on but once again fades after a short period of time.
My first thought is that perhaps the DVD drive is incompatible/drawing too much power, but I can't figure out how this would affect the charger, and why the problem would persist whether the power is on or off.
Has anyone encountered a problem like this? I don't hold much hope that this will be fixed without expensive surgery, but I'd like to try
    iBook G3, PowerPC G5, iPod   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Hi Ronda, thanks for the response. I've pulled it apart a couple of times and have put it back together via the instructions I downloaded on the internet both times, and have had the same problem. To be honest, I can't answer that! I'll have to pull it apart this afternoon again to check.

  • Installing extra IDE drives

My 500mhz. dual processor G4(revision B) came with 2 40 gig IDE hard drives installed. They're piggy-back installed in the botton right side of the bottom of the G4 case with a 2-input ribbon cable that connects to the motherboard right next to it. In the future though I'd like to install another drive or two next to the others but how is this done? I see space for another caddy next to the present one but what about the ribbon and power cables? How many drives can be used and what cables are needed to make them work?

    Hi
Mac compatible ATA and SATA PCI cards are available from a number of manufacturers including ACARD, FirmTek, Sonnet and SIIG. I guess the main decision is whether you choose an older style ATA card or a newer SATA (Serial ATA) card.
    ATA cards include the following:
    http://www.acard.com.tw/english/fb01-product.jsp?idnono=124&prod_no=AEC-6280M&type1_title=Adapters&type1idno=3
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/tempo_ata133.html
    SATA cards include the following:
    http://www.acard.com.tw/english/fb01-product.jsp?idnono=126&prod_no=AEC-6290M&type1_title=Adapters&type1idno=3
    http://www.firmtek.com/seritek/seritek-1s2/
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/temposerialata.html
OWC seem to stock a wide variety of those available. The following links should give an idea of the costs involved:
    ATA
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/ATA-SCSI-Firewire-Controllers/
    SATA
    http://eshop.macsales.com/Search/Search.cfm?Criteria=SATAHigh-Speed+Controller+MacCards&x=0&y=0&Manufacturer=
Things to look for include whether the attached drives are bootable, whether the card supports deep sleep and whether it's plug and play or requires third party drivers.
Your 4 gig drive should work on an ATA card but not directly on a SATA card. You can buy adapters to attach ATA drives to SATA cards and vice-versa, although I'm not sure whether it would be worth it for a relatively small drive.
Edit - You'll also need to check OS compatibility, especially if you're using OS 9 or an early version of OS X.

  • ITunes installed on both Leopard & Tiger drives on MacPro Will this work???

    Hi,
I have been using iTunes on my MacPro installed on my Tiger drive. The phone Apps and cover art are in the iTunes directory while my music itself has always been located on another internal drive with iTunes pointed to it.
I now want to switch all iTunes useage to the previously unused iTunes installation ( same version ) on my Leopard drive. I have copied the Phone Apps folder and the cover art folder into the Leopard iTunes.
    The question is this:
If I de-authorize the Tiger iTunes, then authorize the Leopard iTunes and point it to the existing MUSIC folder should it work?

If I de-authorize the Tiger iTunes, then authorize the Leopard iTunes and point it to the existing MUSIC folder should it work?
    Yes.
