Install GarageBand2 w/o DVD drive

Got my kids iLife 05 for holiday (pretty much exclusively for GarageBand2) to install on G4 iMac.
I did NOT know that the GarageBand2 installer is only on the DVD; the iMac has only a CD R/W drive.
Is there a way to split up the GB2 installer (on another machine, obviously) to CDs so I can get it on the iMac?? (I guess it's that or buy an external DVD drive. Sheeeesh....; thought the c-cards were stretched enough.)
Thanks in advance.

Are you positive that the drive is not a combo drive (i.e. CD-RW and DVD-Player)?
since you mentioned using another computer, do you have another computer with a DVD player? Can you network the two together?
I'm wondering if you could load the DVD onto the second machine, then connect to that one with the first, select the DVD, and install over the network. It would be slow, but I think that might work (though it's not something I've tried).

When trying to install Windows 7 with boot camp, all goes well until it stops and gives me the "CD/DVD driver not found". I have a mid 2010 Mac Pro with a 500 GB SSD drive. I have burned a DVD at 1X from a iso file.

Can you verify the MD5/SHA1 of the DVD with the ISO using OS X 'openssl md5' or the M$ FCIV tool? The source of your ISO should be able to provide MD5/SHA1.
    OS X Example
    openssl md5 ~/Desktop/GRMCPRXVOL_EN_DVD.cdr

  • How do I install an amazon external dvd drive to replace a broken internal one in my old macbook?

My old macbook has a broken optical drive inside it. The one that came with it has quit working and the genius at the genius bar said it needed to be replaced. The genius said to get an external one online so I bought the Amazon basics external dvd drive. I can't figure out how to install it and get it to work.

Nothing will show up on the desktop until you put a CD/DVD in it.
Plug it into the FireWire or USB port and turn it on. Put a CD/DVD in it and it should show up on the desktop.

  • Need help in installing Snow Leopard without DVD drive

    Hi,
I have a White Macbook 2008 model with 2.1 ghz processor and 1 GB Ram. The dvd rom is not working in my machine. It spits out the dvd's 99 out of 100 times.
I need to upgrade from 10.5.8 to 10.6. Apple has sent me a single disk to install snow leopard.
I am not willing to invest in new dvd drive either internal or external. Needed help on ways to install snow leopard please apart from using the dvd option.
I do have a Firewire 400 cable but i do not know anybody anymore who has a mac machine with 400 port.
Hence the cable is also useless and i cannot connect to anyother macbook and do the install using their drive.
    Please suggest.
    Regards,
    Rahul

There are no direct options. Find a friend with a Mac that has a working optical drive. Buy an 8GB USB flash drive. Partition and format it for the Mac then clone the mounted DVD to the flash drive. Take it back to your computer and boot from the flash drive.
    Boot Using OPTION key:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
          "OPTION" key.
      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
      4. Select the disk icon for the flash drive.
      5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.

  • Installing Tiger with external DVD drive, why won't it work??

I have been trying to install OS X 10.4.3 from the DVD disk, last time I upgrade the OS I had to go out and buy an external DVD drive because I only have a cd drive in my mac. This worked fine last time but now I'm upgrading again it just won't work.
I can not get the mac to boot from the DVD, it sees it's there, I've tried holding down c, the alt key, the option key, choosing the DVD as the start up disk and checking the firmware, nothing will work!
I have read other questions of the same nature but I don't seem to have found an answer.
    Can anyone help me, please??
    Ruth
imac Power PC G3   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I'm having the same problem. My mom has a Quicksilver G4 – four years old, but plenty to run Tiger. The only thing is we didn't get the built in DVD player. We got an external firewire DVD but can't get the machine to boot from the disk in the external drive.
If I try to run the installer I get a (-2) error that Startup Disk can't make the selected drive the boot drive. If I go into Startup I can select the DVD, but upon actual start up it can't find it and I eventually get the folder with the question mark. Holding down option doesn't bring it up in the list and holding down c does absolutely nothing.
    Anybody else?

  • Install on PowerMac without DVD drive

I have an older PowerMac G4 here with a CD drive only, but all of my Tiger disks (upgrade and retail install) are on DVD's. Since I have a software title that will not work on Panther, I have to get this machine installed with Tiger..
So, short of buying an external DVD drive, is there any way to install this using a network connection? I have a Powerbook that I could use to share out the DVD drive on, but will it install over a share like that? Can I copy the entire Upgrade DVD contents onto this PowerMac and install from there?
    Any ideas appreciated...
    Thanks,

It's Apple's $10 program to exchange DVDs for CDs.
    See

Well I did not know about needing a DVD player for this Tiger upgrade till I got it today with FedEx.
I read the board and the media exchange program, I wish it was posted in a better place on the store area.

  • How to install Leopard without working DVD-drive?

I have a MacBook Pro 3,1 (A1226) without a working DVD-drive and I would like to replace the existing 80Gb drive with a 320Gb drive. The hardware is no problem, I did that a few times already, but how to get the OS working?
I have an TimeMachine backup on a USB-disk of the 10.5.8 (9L31a) installed system. I do not wish to upgrade because there is some old licensed software on it that does not work with a newer OS.
I also have another MacBook Pro (with 10.7.5) I could hook up with an Ethernet-cable. Theoretically even with a Firewire cable I do not have right now. But when I buy extra things I should perhaps better get an external hard disk enclosure for the 320Gb?
    Please advice.

Am gonna solve it in another way. I will just get a so-called "9.5 mm PATA Optical Bay SATA Hard Drive Enclosure" and put the 320Gb drive in that one. Sorry to have distracted you.

Last night I had the same problem. Tried to upgrade and got the version with Itunes to see what it was. After reboot, Both physical drives and a vertual drive now have the yellow mark. These don't seem to be device drivers, so should not have had an effect, but I replaced them which made reg mechanic happy. Problem is still there.

  • G4 Gigabit install problem: Thinks that DVD drive is Hd:1, ...

Ok i've little homebrew system here:
    G4 Gigabit ethernet motherboard
    Dual 450 cpu
    640MB SDRAM
TI4600 with modbios, works like charm
    120GB maxtor in UATA port

So i'm running into problems when installing OS, doesn't matter is is debian or OS X, still same problem:
Open Firmware thinks that my DVD drive is a HDD!
    For exsample:
    Normal debian install command:
    CD:,\install\yaboot and here's the result: can't OPEN boot cd:,\install\yaboot
Well this atleast gives a result:
HD:1,\install\yaboot but i run into parameter problems.
So how do i rename HD:1, to CD?
    And reset-nvram - set-defaults - reset-all gives me a Bad Defaults error...
    Nothing more this time :P

    Hi, s0liddi -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
Perhaps the optical drive was replaced at one time? Make sure that the jumpers on the optical drive are set to Master (not to Slave or to Cable Select). On early G4s like your G4 (GE), the optical drive is bootable only when set to Master.

  • I installed Lion, now my dvd drive doesn't recognize any files on dvd. Please help.

I'm a photographer with tons on images on dvd and my dvd drive now doesn't recognize any files on any of my dvd's. Help!!!

After 3 trips to the Apple store this week, the issue is still unresolved. The photo dvd's open just fine on Snow Leopard, but are not recognized at all on Lion. I'm guessing since the DVD's were originally burned on a PC, they will no longer work. After finding out that PowerPC is no longer recognized by Lion and I can no longer use Nikon NX2 (Photo editing software), I will be re-installing Snow Leopard. According to the Apple store in Lancaster, Pa. there is no refund available for my Lion purchase. I have a ton of photo DVD's, most of which will not open since I've only recently switched to an IMAC system. It has made me think about returning to the PC world. I'm VERY unhappy with these developments and I really need to re-think my computer situation. I don't do much else besides photography. My purchases and time spent with my IMAC has aparently been a great waste.

  • Compaq M2000Z - installing XP from CD/DVD Drive

My daughters M2000Z stopped working after a reboot last evening.  It seeemed to be having some USB issues before this problem.  So I rebooted it and it would not come up, even in Safe Mode.  Hard Drive starts and have booted it from the CD Drive with some DOS-Like OS's and I'm able to run a chkdsk on the hard drive.
However, when I try to use a copy of XP Pro I have and boot from the CD the system starts and goes through all the processes of setting up.  However it stops at the "Setup is starting Windows".    I've done a lot of searching on the net and it seems to this has something to do with Windows not loading or recognizing the right drivers or there being a bios problem.  Whichever it is, given that I can't get the system to load I have no way to update the bios or drivers.
Should I just order the reimage CD's and go from there?  1) Are there other alternatives  2) Will the reimage disks work?
    Thanks.

  • Installing Tiger from external DVD drive

    Hi,
My internal optical drive is damaged. I would like to install Leopard from an external DVD drive. I currently have Tiger on my system. But nothing happens when I double click on the installation icon. Any suggestions ?

Boot while pressing the Option key, then select the DVD.

  • Install Tigre from FW DVD drive?

Has anyone had any luck installing by this venue?
My internal combo drive is a bit dodgy with DVDs these days; i'm thinking of borrowing an external FireWire DVD drive for this adventuresome install. Anyone done this?

    Okay, FINally.
I did it. Here are my super-idiosyncratic results. They go against just about all the expectations i had from reading recent posts... so I hope it makes for interesting reading!
Bottom line: Installing over Panther worked, without wiping the drive. There were some hitches.
First off: using XPF 4, the beige booted just fine from the Tiger disc on the FireWire DVD drive. However, I had only a PowerBook install DVD, and it didn't like my system. "This software cannot be installed on this computer. [Restart]" Pah!
I did restart, without benefit of XPF this time, and the Beige hung of course; I had to boot back to 9 to return to square 1. Square 1 in this case was my Panther system, and my lovely paid copy of XPF 4.
I certainly wasn't taking this first "no" for an answer, so I attempted to install the packages from the DVD via Charles Srtska's Pacifist, which lets you skip the main OS installer program and choose which components to install.
First, in Pacifist, I attempted to "Update Prebinding Information" on the boot volume (which is the only installable place), and this stalled out. Deciding this was probably not going to work, I re-booted and repaired permissions.
Then I decided "enough pussyfooting." In Pacifist, I went straight to "Open OS X Installation Package" and selected everything except the printer drivers and foreign language localizations on the DVD and just said "Install".
    Then it got interesting.
First of all, obviously Tiger is installing a great number of files which are identical in name to the Panther files they are replacing, and this is occurring on your present boot volume! Pacifist wants to ask you about each one of these 20,000 situations. Hesitantly, I checked "answer yes to all." Note: the beige had NOT booted from the DVD, Pacifist was just pulling the install packages from the DVD - and I'm pretty sure it was writing those files over the system files on the boot volume. Whoa! Is that even possible?
There was a Pacifist question about whether to update or replace ".app" bundles, with the risk that the apps would be unbundled into folders. I said I wanted to "update" in every such situation to maintain bundling, I think. Apparently the right choice.
There were several glitches when a "replace file" operation was refused: "...because a file cannot be replaced by a folder." One of these was an important Java folder, possibly the main Java app.; I grimaced and clicked OK each time. Several times these questions stopped the install for hours, by the way, since I was away from the computer.
However the install ran until the end. Finally, after installation and optimization, Pacifist wanted to update prebinding information on the boot disc, as I had tried to do before the installation. This operation was allowed to go for 12 hours but when I checked again, it had evidently stalled, so I force-quit Pacifist and restarted in OS 9. Fortunately I still have an OS 9 boot volume ... Then, XPF showed the option of rebooting in 10.4 on the volume where I had been doing the installation. Would it work?
Tiger booted all right. But it did not recognize my login, or my password, or my admin password, and did not let me login as root. The Tiger install DVD, being uncooperative, would not let me reset the admin password; I did finally accomplish this from the Panther install CD 1.
And then I could boot into Tiger as 'root'. In Sys Prefs: Accounts, I "created" my old two accounts again. Tiger asked if I wanted to use the same folders for these "new" accounts with the same old user names, I said yes. When I logged out of 'root' and logged in as each of these users, Tiger booted with all the old Panther prefs proper to each user. No migration necessary so far (haven't tested iphoto or itunes however).
Just now I have installed the 10.4.4 combined update, and repaired permissions with Onyx. Smooth.
After all that, I ran Software Update and - impressively - the missing Java file was noticed and reinstalled
I think it's time for me to pay for my copy of Pacifist!
I will say this: Tiger does not seem particularly faster than Panther on my machine, and it does not boot faster. I had Panther booting in half a minute, due to some stratagem posted on this forum which cuts the hardware check off during startup; I think this was achieved by force-shutting-down the startup process at some point and immediately rebooting, but I don't remember. Does anyone else?

  • Install Leopard via External DVD Drive?

This is a question for a friend, as I don't have an external DVD drive I can't test it out for myself, but basically can OSX 10.5 Leopard be installed using an external drive?
His internal Superdrive doesn't work properly, very similar to the issues discussed in the "Apple.com > Support > Discussions > iMac G5 > Using DVDs and CDs with your iMac G5" section. I'm not sure of the brand of external drive, but I believe it's connected via USB2.0.
That's pretty much it, any help is, as always, very much appreciated!
    Scoobs.

An external DVD drive will work, but it must use FireWire for a G4 or G5. USB or FireWire will work with Intel Macs.
