Install iLife from new Mac on old Mac?

I currently have a MacBook Pro with iLife '08. I'm planning on purchasing a Mac Mini to use as a media center and would like to swap the iLife '09 on the Mini with the iLife '08 on my MacBook Pro. Is this possible, and if so, how?

No - the software that comes with your computer is set up only for that system

  • HT1338 Why can't I install Leopard for PowerPC on my old Mac Mini?

Why can't I install Leopard for PowerPC on my old Mac Mini? The massage "This can not be installed on this computer" appears.

My thoughts are that your difficulties could be one of these:
your non-retail DVD may only work on a very limited range of Mac minis
the installer may not like your new RAM
the installer may not like the language change especially if the disk has not been erased first
I have seen a little evidence for 3 in the code of other Leopard install DVDs - they appear to have less stringent language checks for erased volumes. Whilst I have never modified model specific installers I have modified retail installers to ignore speed and RAM checks.
    My advice:
back up your whole mini hard disk to an external disk - see notes
erase the hard disk and partition into 2 volumes with Leopard install DVD
try to install Leopard on one volume
put original OS on the other volume
    Notes:
Carbon Copy Cloner can be used to backup the whole hard disk
ensure the mini can be booted from the external disk before you erase the internal disk

iMessage wont forward messages from new contacts to my Mac. New conversations started on my iPhone wont show up automatically on my Mac. What's the deal ?

    Hi,
    Do you mean sync ?
Forward is a specific action that can be done with iMessages on a phone.
Have your tried turning everything Off and then On Again ?
I say this as I updated to Mac OS X 10.8.2 first then iOS 6 on the devices I had.
On each iOS device there was a restart and at this point I was asked on my Mac to allow the Apple ID and iPhone Numbers to be allowed/added to Messages (I have two iPhones so I said no to one)

  • New MacBook Pro, old .Mac account and existing homepage

    Hallo,
I got a new MBP this evening and installed iLife 08.
I started iWeb 08 and its prompting me make a new website, however I uploaded a few sites already on my old Mac. Is there any way to import my website back into iWeb ?

User (Home) / Library / Application Support / iWeb
Move the Doamin.sites file from the old machine to the new one. You will have to make the iWeb folder using the Finder and then drag the Domain.sites file into it.

  • Troubles downloading new firefox on old Mac OS X (version 10.4.11), can it be used on such an old mac?

I have an old mac (Mac OS X version 10.4.11) and the download seemed to go through smoothly, but when I clicked on the mozilla icon it said that it couldn't be opened. I was wondering if this new version of firefox is not compatible with older macs.

Less danger of losing than saving actually.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • Can't install OSX 10.7 Lion on old Mac Pro...

i've got an old mac pro... i think it is 2007 or 2008 vintage... it is the 2.66mghzzz model...
it is so old it can't run OSx 10.8 and up... so I am stuck running 10.7xxx
    anyway, system disk died recently...
made an OSX 10.7 install thingy on a 8gb USB drive using my new Macbook Pro...
problem is the install keeps hanging after starting the install... i've attached screenshots showing how far it gets...
i've let it sit for a few hours and no progress... i reckon it should normally finish installing of a USB stick in maybe 30 minutes or so?
is it possible that the 4tb SSHD drive i am installing onto is too big for this machine?
it has been using other 4tb drives so not sure this is an issue?
    really stuck here... argh...
    thanks

    thanks for your reply...
yes, I realize it will only install on older macs...  my Mac Pro is the 1,1 model...  the 2.66mhz processor is from the 2006-2008 era....
i believe it shipped with 10.4 or 10.5 OSX...
it was previously running 10.7.5 which is the newest OSX that was allowed to be installed on it....
so it should allow 10.7 to be installed?  Or do I have to start with the much older osx?
I downloaded Lion 10.7 from the mac app store and it of course wouldn't let me install it on anything, even the 4tb SSHD drive when I connected it via USB/SATA adapter to macbook pro as it is too old for running 10.7 install on this machine but I was apple to use SuperDuper app to make a boot drive of the 10.7 download form the mac app store onto a 8gb USB flash drive and make it bootable...
The 4tb SSHD drive appears to work on system as I can run disk utility and format it and mount it etc etc...
Perhaps there is something wrong with my install USB flash drive I made?  I am really stuck here...
    thanks for your help...

    Thanks

It's going to be impossible to install Mavericks unless you have a working Mavericks-USB-installer or an  "install OS X Mavericks.dmg" that YOU have downloaded from the App Store in the past.
You should use a Snow Leopard install DVD to install 10.6.8 Snow Leopard on your Mac. From there, you can use your  "install OS X Mavericks.dmg" to install Mavericks. If you don't have that, you can download and install Yosemite from the Mac App Store instead.
If you don't have either a Snow Leopard install DVD or a custom made Mavericks-installer-USB, you should call Apple and buy a Snow Leopard install DVD from them. They're still for sale.
The other option is to use another, still functioning, Mac and connect the two using a firewire cable. Then you can use Target Disk Mode to install Mavericks or Yosemite on your Mac http://support.apple.com/nl-nl/ht1661

  • Installing software from new to old computer

If I buy a new mac with Tiger, can I use the CDs provided to instal it on my old computer (that has panther on it) or do I need to buy it separately?
    Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

The Tiger install package that ships with a new Mac purchase is model and build specific and cannot be used to install Tiger on another Mac. Even if attempted on the same Mac model, the model build must be identical to the model/build the install package was shipped with and intended for. Even if possible and as previously provided, it would be a violation of the single user license agreement and against the law to install and use a copy of the OS and included software on more than one Mac at a time.
If you want to install Tiger on your old Mac, you need to purchase a Tiger retail install package which can be used to install Tiger on a single Mac model that meets the minimum system requirements.

  • New Set up of Airport Extreme with New Macbook and 'Old' Mac Mini

I have wirelessly connected my new Mac Book to Airport Extreme, and have tested the connection by using a shared printer. I have connected my old Mac Mini (OSX 10.3.9) via Wired LAN.The MacMini does not recognise a connection to the Airport Extreme. I would like to share files between the MacBook and the Mini, but they do not 'See' each other. What have I not done correctly?

  • My new mac and old mac are linked, and I don't want them to be!

I had a mac and I gave it to someone and I now have a new mac which I set up in the same way. I have noticed that my internet bookmarks that I created on my old mac have been carried over, but I can see the bookmarks that the current user of the other mac is making, the other person keeps adding new folders, and it's just really weird, I don't want our computers to be linked in any way. Please could someone help me resolve this? Thanks!

If you still have contact with the person you gave it to, you may want to use the following guide (note that the reformat part will wipe out all data on the Mac including anything the new owner has added so that may not be advisable): http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5189
If you don't have access to the old Mac you could deauthorize all computers in iTunes per the following: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1420 and change your Apple ID password: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5624

why is this not recommended? that's what TC is for. However, I would partition it and keep TM backups for individual disks on dedicated partitions.
If one goes through partitioning, I suppose it should work. However, I was one of the poor fellows who had problems making it work even the first time, so I did not want to go high tech initially. It took me a several hours, perhaps a few days, to make it work properly with one Mac - as simple a solution as possible. After I was sure that worked, I added the second one to see if it worked, and it did.
having two Macs backing up to the same physical external harddisk (a time capsule). I suppose there is no way to access the time machine backup of Mac 1, when I'm connected with Mac 2?
I don't have a TC but can't you do it when you use "browse other backups" option?
It does not say "browse other backups". It says "Browse other Time Machine disks". And as I have only one disk with two backups, there is no obvious way to choose which one to access.

  • Target disk mode from newer iMac to old G4 Mac???

    Hi:
We have a several year old iMac (2.66 GHz Intel Core i5 running OS 10.9.4). I have a much older (2001) 867 MHz G4 Mac. I'd like to recycle the latter (which I haven't used in many years), but before doing so I want to make sure the internal disks are wiped clean.
I connect it to my iMac with a FireWire cable and boot it up in target mode by holding down the "T" key. Surprisingly (to me, at least), nothing shows up on the desktop of my iMac. But if I go to Disk Utility, it is listed in the available disks under "AAPL FireWire Target Media", with the properly named internal hard drive listed as a sub header (id est, "My Computer"). Three problems (really one, but more data for trouble shooting):
    1) If I try and mount  the internal disk on the G4 onto my iMac with the "Mount" button in Disk Utility, the error says "Mount Failed: The disk "My Computer" could not be mounted. Try running First Aid on the disk and then retry mounting"
    2) If I click "Verify" "My Computer" I get "The volume "My Computer" was found to be corrupt and needs to be repaired. Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk.". But, the "Repair Disk" button is greyed out. All options are also grey if I click the top most hierarchy: "AAPL FireWire Target Media"
    3) Under the "Erase" tab in Disk Utility, both "AAPL FireWire Target Media" and it's sub header "My Computer" all options are greyed out.
Bottom-line, the disk is shown in target mode in Disk Utility, but I cannot seem to access it to Secure Erase it.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Thanks to both of you for your help with this interesting problem!
After secure erasing the internal drive on the G4 using a copy of Disk Utility on a CD as described above, the internal drive on the G4 DOES mount on my Mavericks iMac. Don’t know why erasing it changed things, but it did.
So then I ran the command lines in Terminal you suggested:
    [HomeG4-2:~] MyUID% sudo chflags -R nouchg/Volumes/IntSml
    usage: chflags [-fhv] [-R [-H | -L | -P]] flags file ...
    [HomeG4-2:~] MyUID%
    [HomeG4-2:~] MyUID% sudo chmod -R 755/Volumes/IntSml
    usage: chmod [-fhv] [-R [-H | -L | -P]] [-a | +a | =a  [i][# [ n]]] mode|entry file ...
      chmod [-fhv] [-R [-H | -L | -P]] [-E | -C | -N | -i | -I] file ...
    [HomeG4-2:~] MyUID%
And then I ran diskutil list as you suggested:
    [HomeG4-2:~] MyUID% diskutil list
    /dev/disk0
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *1.0 TB     disk0
       1:                        EFI EFI                     209.7 MB   disk0s1
       2:                  Apple_HFS iMac HD               959.3 GB   disk0s2
       3:                 Apple_Boot Recovery HD             650.0 MB   disk0s3
       4:       Microsoft Basic Data                         40.0 GB    disk0s4
    /dev/disk1
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:     Apple_partition_scheme                        *122.9 GB   disk1
       1:        Apple_partition_map                         32.3 KB    disk1s1
       2:                  Apple_HFS IntSml                  122.8 GB   disk1s3
    [HomeG4-2:~] MyUID%
But despite all this, even though the disk now mounts, all options within DiskUtility for Erase are greyed out.
Anyways, it was an interesting learning experience and I appreciate your interest.
And just in case anyone else is reading this, if you google apple computer recycling program one gets a lot of options for recycling. Since I figured this old PPC would have very little worth, I used http://oem.srsapp.com/ApplePoweredBysims/default.aspx where they give you a shipping label and you can send your old box for green recycling and keep toxic metals etc out of the landfill.
PS Any idea why even after secure erasing the G4 disk, writing multiple zeros, the drive still has two files on it accounting for 54MB of data out of the 123GB of data on the disk??? What does this represent?

  • Installing OS on new drive but selling Mac?

    Hi there
I’ve just upgraded to a new 27" iMac and I’m going to sell the old one (spec below). I need to replace the hard drive because its faulty and want to sell the Mac with Mountain Lion installed.
So firstly, I don’t think the new drive is formatted in anyway (WD 1TB Caviar Blue). So after I install the new drive will disk-utility from an old Snow Leopard disk see the drive in order for me to format it, ready for the OS install?
And secondly, If I then install Mountain Lion and delete myself as the main user and create a new Admin user, will future owners of the Mac be able to update and upgrade the OS without my details?
    Thank you in advance.

You can't do that because it will always be associated with your Apple ID.
The proper way to "clean" a computer before selling it is to zero the hard drive. This will make all your data irretrievable.
Steps for zeroing the drive Disk Utility:
    1. Insert your Mac OS X CD-ROM disc or Restore DVD disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key until you see the spinning gear.
    2. Once started up from CD or DVD, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
    3. Choose the entire disk (top icon).
    4. Choose erase tab.
    5. Click on Options
    6. Choose "write zeros".
    7. Erase
This will take a bit of time because the computer is physically writing zeros to each block.
You should then re-install the original OS from the system disks and deliver the Mac to the new owner with the system disks that shipped with it.
If you want it to boot as new at startup, do the installation of OS X and follow the onscreen prompts until it asks you to enter a username and password to create your first account. Quit the installer and shut down the system. The next time the system is powered on it will display the same welcome message and be ready to setup OS X.

  • Trying to use new nano with old mac

Hi, I was wondering if someone could give me some advice.
I recently received an ipod nano as a gift. Unfortunately, my ibook is from 2001, and i am still running the original OS 10.
From what I have read in these discussion forums, it would probably not be wise for me to try to install OS 10.4 on my computer. However, I believe that OS 10.4 is needed for my computer to be compatible to my nano.
I have hundreds of songs on my ibook, which I would really like to transfer to my new ipod. What can I do?
    thanx
    ibook Mac OS X (10.0.x)

Apple's minimum specs for the Nano are 10.3.x basically because that was the first version of the MacOS to support USB 2. However, many people, including my wife, are using a Nano with computers that have USB 1. So the real limiting factor is what version of the OS your computer can comfortably run. I wouldn't recommend 10.4 but 10.3 is certainly doable. I know several people running around with the colored iBooks running 10.3. And certainly 10.2 is doable though I don't know if iTunes 6 will run on Jaguar.
