Install IOS4 UK variant on USA Iphone 3g possible?

Need some help with this update guys.
I have an iphone 3G from the US and now i live in the UK. I unlocked it and use it with Vodafone UK. IOS4 was too slow and i've been waiting for IOS4.1 to be released.
Here is the question: If I update my iphone via itunes my iphone will lock up to the USA Variant of IOS4.1 (right?) and then I'll need to unlock it again? (no jailbreak available right now?).
But I dont want to unlock/jailbreak etc my iphone.
Is it possible that i can install the UK variant of IOS4.1 on my US Iphone?
this is important as I cant use all the apps from the UK App store etc and some of them don't work properly.

If you update your iPhone it will almost certainly use the US version as you call it, with all of AT&T's specific settings. Since there isn't a unlock available at this time, either official or not, I would recommend not updating if you need to use it with Vodafone.
As a caveat, you could try calling AppleCare or AT&T customer service to see if there is an officially supported way of getting your iPhone on Vodafone. Barring that you don't want to upgrade right now.

What a screw up on Apple's part... I have iTunes 9.0.2 and you need at least 9.2 to install iOS4. iTunes 9.2 requires Leopard (I'm running Tiger). And of course iTunes 10 requires Leopard as well. So people with Tiger are SOL I guess. How stupid is that?

ITunes says it can't read my data, but restoring will install iOS4

Hi,
I've only recently purchased my 8gb iPod Touch, and am on my second one at the moment. I had to take the first one back in less than a day after I purchased it because iOS4 completely crashed it. Nothing could fix it.
Anyway, just recently the new iPod hasn't been connecting to iTunes properly. iTunes can find it but it says it can't read the data and it needs to restore it to the factory settings. I wouldn't have a problem with this normally, however when I go to restore, iTunes says that restoring will also install the iOS4 software, which ruined my last iPod Touch.
I really don't know what to do. Sooner or later I'm going to need to put more things on and take things off...I'm too scared to try and install iOS4 again and I've been told Apple won't help you if your iPod dies as a result of iOS4..
Does anyone know how I can fix this without installing iOS4?

mine is doing the same thing other than Itunes saying it can't read the format. I can't play 90% of my music. I took it to an apple store the other day an they told me only purchased music will work. Not even a music upload from a CD. Which to me is a load of ....because my wife has all the songs on her iphone that are greyed out on mine and they work on hers

3G crashed trying to install iOS4 - now will not restore

I finally succumbed to the pop-ups telling me to install iOS4. It crashed during the "restoring iphone software" stage. I now do not have any operating system on my phone. I have tried restoring but it will not proceed further than 13% of the progress bar on "restoring iphone software"
Any help will be gratefully received.

Thank you for the comments. I have just got back form teh O2 (service provider) store. They restored to factory settings and updated to ios4 for free. I should think so too , as I have only had the phone for a month!
I hope it runs smoothly though now, as I have seen many comments regarding loss of speed.

I had the same problem, after almost 7 hours of trying, I decided to use another computer with Win XP ,(I was using Win7), for some reason I was able to download, backup and install iOS4 without any problems with contacts, sounds, calendar or any other problems some other users are having. So far happy with the upgrade. I connected the iPhone back to the Win7 computer to do a sync and another backup and worked like a charm... Hope this will help.

Can't download or install iOS4 on my 3GS

When I first tried to install iOS4, I got an error message saying iTunes couldn't contact the iPhone software update server because I am not connected to the internet. Based on other forum comments, I thought the error might be caused by an outdated version of iTunes, so I upgraded iTunes to v9.2. That did not solve the problem. I am now told that an upgraded OS is available, but when I click "Update" I am still told that I am not connected to the internet -- which is absolutely untrue. my problem is similiar.
i try to update my iPhone via iTunes but it only tells me i already have the latest version of iTunes when i'm trying to update iPhone.
under devices - iphone - summary - check for update, everything is as it should be, it tells me that there is a new version (4.0) of iPhone and when i press update appears a box that says i have the latest version of iTunes. the end.
so that's how i'm unable to update to iPhone iOS4.

SIM not recognized; USA iPhone, but abroad

I have a complicated problem, or so it seems. I've tried to search apple support/forums and nothing answers my situation.
Original iPhone purchased in USA about 1 year ago, always used AT&T, never unlocked.
I have been in Jordan for 4 days now on an extended visit. Before leaving the states, I suspended my AT&T phone service to avoid international charges. I would still like to use the phone to take photos, listen to iPod, use wirelessly.
Stupidly, I purchased a local SIM and attempted to activate the iPhone with it. Obviously, iTunes rejected the SIM, so I replaced it with the original AT&T SIM and put the local SIM in the Nokia provided to my by my company and it works fine.
iPhone seemed to work fine with AT&T SIM after replacing until I connected it to iTunes to install the latest software update. Recieved error message stating 'ITUNES CANNOT ACTIVATE BECAUSE SIM NOT INSERTED OR SIM PIN REQUIRED.' Phone no longer works, asks me to plug into iTunes (to activate).
I have tried reinserting SIM several times.
I have performed hard reset on the phone a few times.
I have plugged into iTunes several times, always same result.
I have not been able to restore the phone because iTunes thinks it has not been activated (cannot access iPhone via iTunes).
I have not been able to enter default PIN, because phone will only allow an emergency call, (cannot access SETTINGS).
When pressing 'INFO' button from screen telling me to plug into iTunes, IMEI number doesn't appear to be default (begins 01... ends 15 1), ICCID: unknown.
What has caused my problem?
iTunes didn't like that I tried to activate foreign/unsupported SIM?
Could it be caused by software update?
The fact my phone account is suspended?
Bad SIM?
Anything I have forgotten? I'd like to avoid calling Apple unless I know the phone can actually be fixed while I'm here.
Lastly, is it possible to purchase an Orange SIM (local Jordanian iPhone provider) for use while abroad on a locked USA iPhone?

Thanks so much for the help. Word to the wise: do not attempt to upgrade locked USA Original iPhone software outside the 50 states. AT&T Wireless Support.
The problem was caused not by suspending my account, because it is possible to use the iPhone as a iPod touch without a wireless contract, which is what I wanted to do while traveling.
Whenever the software is upgraded, you (automatically) re-activate your account with AT&T. As stated in the AT&T support document, activation is limited to the 50 states. Unfortunately because I am overseas, I could not re-activate and my phone is locked until I return to the states. Probably an unusual circumstance, but I wish there was a workaround or they had thought this through a little better.
Hope this information is useful to someone. Unfortunately if you're reading this its probably too late.

Well, what happens when you try to use it. That would help in the troubleshooting. Have you contacted your cellular carrier? Voicemail is a carrier function.

It sounds like you are constantly needing to restore your phone because it keeps going into recovery mode. Usually putting a device into recovery mode and restoring it can help isolate an issue to your iPhone hardware if an issue persists afterwards. I would try manually putting it into recovery mode and restoring it 1 more time:

Unfortunately I tried that and it didn't work. Thanks for the help though. I tried to uninstall and it said I couldn't because the file is corrupt or something, but I think I finally got it uninstalled and/or deleted or whatever, but now I try to reinstall/download it again from the beginning and I can't. No matter what I do I can not get Firefox working again. No matter how many times I try to redownload it. Any other suggestions?
